Chapter members presented a proposed amendment to the Chapter Board at the May 17, 2014 Board Meeting. After review and discussion, the Board concluded the proposed by-law change was for the good of the chapter and was favorable to having the by-law amendment brought to the general membership. The members present at the June 21st meeting approved of the amendment going forward for vote at the November 15 2014 general meeting. The proposed amendment was approved unanimously at the Nov 15th 2014 meeting by the membership pre-sent.

Amended Article 5:

Article 5. OFFICERS of the CHAPTER shall consist of a President, a Vice-president a Secretary and a Treasurer. DIRECTORS of the CHAPTER shall consist of five members at large. No per-son shall be elected without prior consent

Officers will be elected for two (2) year terms and Directors will be elected for (3) year terms in the following fashion:

a. A Nominating Committee, consisting of three (3) members, shall be appointed by the Presi-dent at the last business meeting preceding the ANNUAL MEETING. Said Committee will present a slate of prospective Officers and Directors for election at the ANNUAL MEETING.

b. Election to each office will take place at the designated Annual Meeting with additional nominations to the recommended slate accepted from the floor.

c. A majority vote of those members in good standing (paid up dues) present will constitute the election.

d. Director’s terms shall overlap. Therefore, the first year of Director Elections, the term of one Director shall be for two years, two Directors for four years and two Directors for six

IMPORTANT- - Amended By-Law

At the Nov. meeting Judy Watkins introduced a proposed Amendment to Article V and asked for discussion: Change: Adds a second vice president.

Article 5. OFFICERS of the CHAPTER shall consist of a President, a First Vice-president, a Second Vice

President, a Secretary and a Treasurer. DIRECTORS of the CHAPTER shall consist of five members at

large. No person shall be elected without prior consent

Rationale: Change will increase the opportunity for chapter members to participate in the govern-ance of the chapter. Change will improve chapter governance continuity by allowing a vice presi-dent to shadow the president allowing the vice president a greater understanding of the presi-dent’s position if he or she decides to run for president. This proposal is still open for further dis-cussion.

Meeting date: _11-1-2014

Call to Order: A regular meeting of the Board of Directors, NWC-ATHS, was held in Lakewood WA on

11/1/2014. The meeting convened at: 9:00 A.M, Vice President Judy Watkins presiding.

Members of the Board in attendance were Rick Hendrix, Jim Hanna, Art Watkins Judy Watkins, Mike

Scott, Doug Nichols, Al Downs Pat Neuroth, and Roy Friis. Members not in attendance were Jack Davis,

Lee Kessler. Approval of Minutes: Reading of the minutes of the June meeting of the NWC-ATHS Board of Directors

were waived as they were printed in the previous newsletter.

Officers Reports: Vice President Judy Watkins presented information concerning this year’s show and

opened discussion with the members in attendance as to what went right and what could be done differ-

ently. Discussion included how to better inform people about the show. After discussion, Pat Neuroth made

a motion to place an ad in the July issue of Vintage Truck magazine at a cost of $173. Mike Scott seconded.

Motion Passed. Roy will contact the magazine and place the advert. Newspapers were identified as well as

we should contact the local radio station.

Treasurer: Doug reported the 2014 truck show netted $435.05 and went on to break down costs that may

not be a onetime start-up versus ongoing. Group discussion followed and it was purposed that a budget of

$3,000 be allocated for the 2015 Truck Show. Judy made a motion for a $3000 budget seconded by Doug.

Motion passed.

Old Business: The proposed amendment to reduce the term for directors will be up for vote at the meeting.

The first printings of NW Chapter truck registry books are now available. Pat Neuroth made a motion to

sell them to the membership for $3.00 a copy in order to cover printing costs. Rick Hendrix second. Motion

passed. Books will be available at the November 15th meeting.

Plaque for Walrath Trucking: The plaque will be ready for presentation at the Nov. 15th meeting. Dave

Wester as a long time friend of the Walrath family was asked to make the presentation and he accepted.

New Business: Judy has presented the board with intent to ask for an amendment to the bylaws to add a 2nd

Vice President. The first reading will be at the Nov 15 meeting. Refinement of the Chapter logo was dis-

cussed and it was agreed that we will have a report back to the Board at the Jan. 2015 meeting. Then the

results will be presented to the membership at the Feb. 2015 meeting. Judy is researching having t-shirts

made for the 2015 truck show to commemorate it being the 20th show. She will report to the board at the

Jan. 2015 meeting.

Good of the Order: The Board discussed the up-coming Nov.15th general meeting and the inclusion of

Mick Moss’s celebration of life. Also Kevin Black through Roy asked if he could have some time to bring

us to date on national news. After discussion, the board decided to introduce the Walraths, then the Moss

family and then Kevin. Minutes of the previous meeting will be waived and printed in the newsletter, and

the treasurer’s report will be minimized. After we dispense with the general portion of the meeting we will

make the presentation to the Walraths; then give Kevin 15 minutes for his report. We will then adjourn to

celebrate Mick’s life. Judy volunteered to act as spokesperson due to potential emotion overload. Judy

asked for a draft agenda outlining the boards discussion and intent to be sent to her as soon as possible.

In 2015 officer elections will be held at the Feb. meeting. President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer,

and two (2) Directors positions will be available. The nominating committee has been talking to members

and an announcement will be made at the general meeting.

Northwest Chapter Antique Truck Historical Society

General membership Meeting Minutes

Meeting date: 11-15-2014

Call to order: The general meeting of the NW Chapter of the ATHS was convened at 1:00 PM by V.P.

Judy Watkins.

Guests: Judy called on and recognized the Walraths, Tom Senior and Tom Jr for their long standing sup-

port of the chapter and their willingness to host our Fall meeting/get-togethers. Dave Wester presented a

plaque of appreciation in recognition of that support.

Mick Moss’s wife Colleen, daughter in law, two sons, and grandson Von were welcomed .

Kevin Black, regional ATHS V.P. was introduced and was asked to give the chapter an update later under

to the good of the order portion of the meeting.

Board and committee reports

Approval of minutes: Judy asked to waive the reading of the September meeting minutes as they were pre-

viously published in the newsletter. Motion was made and seconded to waive the minutes of the meeting.

Motion carried.

President: No Report

Vice president: Judy gave a brief report on the portion of the Nov. 1 board meeting pertaining to the 2014

Truck show and explained that based on first year expenditures of $3160.35, a budget of $3,000 was estab-

lished for 2015.

Because the 2015 show will be our 20th, Judy has volunteered to look at having commemorative t-shirts

printed and made available for purchase. As discussed at the Board meeting, trucks representing Bob

Brown, John Nichols and Mick Moss will be on the shirts as they are considered to be founders of the

Chapter.

The first printing of the Chapter Truck Registry has been sold out, almost. Two copies remain. A second

printing will be available for the February 2015 meeting. Update information will be in the next newsletter.

Since we are almost sold out of Chapter hats, the Board has agreed a review of the current design is needed

and that it should be updated, “tweaked” a bit before the next batch are made.

Treasurer: Doug Nichols reported we had $4000 and change in our account. A budget has been estab-

lished for next years truck show. Anyone wanting to pay dues can at anytime.

Old business: At the September general meeting a bylaw amendment proposal was introduced by Pat Neu-

roth to change the term in office for board members from 6 to 3 years. A full version was printed in the last

newsletter. Lilynne Davis made a motion to approve the amendment, seconded. Motion unanimously ap-

proved

New business: At the Nov. 1 board meeting, a proposed amendment was presented to the board to add a

2nd Vice President as an elected position.

Continued. Judy Watkins explained the rationale behind the proposed amendment as by adding a 2nd

VP, there would be an additional person to take on some of the duties current officers have thereby

reducing the workload for all the current members. During the presentation, there was some confusion

concerning the number of current board members and that number being included in the proposed

amendment. [ To clarify the number of board members confusion, during a recent board meeting, the

subject of elections and term length came up and it was discovered that somewhere in the past we

started electing 6 Board of Directors instead of the By-laws required 5. With two members’ terms end-

ing, in February we will only need to elect one to fill the term ending unless other openings occur be-

tween then and now. ]. Discussion from the membership included caution that we keep the number of

board members as a whole an uneven number in order to keep the President’s position a non-voting

unless as a tie breaker. The Proposed amendment will be published in the next newsletter.

With elections coming up in February Judy urged the membership to get involved and think about run-

ning for one of the positions.

Kevin Black Regional V.P. shared with the members’ news from National. Bill Johnson has left the

leadership team and there has been a very deliberate search for a new director. Don Bretthauer has

been selected as the new executive director. He brings a lot of knowledge about the operation of a non-

profit organization. For those who like Face book, there is now a very active ATHS face book page. A

National by-law review is now underway and we should start seeing information before the end of No-

vember.

For the Good of the Order: Candace Brown was introduced and took a few minutes to introduce Vin-

tage Truck magazine for whom she is a writer for. Many of our members have had articles in past is-

sues and she wanted to let the membership know that a special price was available to Northwest Chap-

ter members.

Jack Davis shared that national awards were changing and soon there would be awards for 75 and 100

years. Six Robles was cited as an example. 2015 will be their 100th year in business.

Announcements: February 14 2015 will be the date of the Chapter Banquet and Officer elections.

Meeting adjourned: 1:45PM to Celebrate Mick Moss’s life. He fueled up and headed down the high-

way one last time October 2014. “ Can you do me a little favor?”

This passage from a poem I read seems to fit here

The Lord has blessed us with a truck driver, which we have all come to love.

God’s hand was always watching him and sometimes even driving from above.

He travels freely now over heavens rolling hills to its shining sea.

He was a special man God made just for you and me.

As heaven and earth now divide us, the special memories of you bring us near.

The common things of life we shared, laughter and sometimes a heart felt tear.

So, father in heaven hear my prayer when I think of our beloved one each day.

Please protect the husband, father and friend, while he’s many, many miles away.

“Can you do me a little favor?” To Rick Hendrix that meant he was going to be involved in something over weight, over length or “hot” or all of the above. And he knew he was going to do it because Mick was the kind of leader he could follow. He always had your back. Mick always did what his customers required and a few rules wouldn’t keep him from getting the job done. If you ever needed to know something about an old Kenworth he was certainly the man to talk to. And if you needed a little room to work on your truck, like Rick did, he would loan you some shop space. Those who knew him will truly miss him and all the knowledge and humor he possessed. He gladly shared both

A Message from Kevin Black Regional V/P American Truck Historical Society To – Chapter Secretaries of Western WA From – Kevin Black RVP Western WA/AK 2015 Kick Off

ATHS Members 2014 has wound down and by the time you read this we will be into 2015. 2014 was a major transition year for ATHS at the national level. Several significant changes in how we do busi-ness and fund ourselves have taken off and are working. The new Executive Director is in place now and we will see how things continue to transition in the coming months. I will be at the National Board Meeting at the end of January in KC. Work changes probably will prevent me from at least one of the chapter meet-ings in January since I will have precious few weekends at home this time around. I am always available by e-mail located in the back of Wheels of Time. That is the most reliable means of getting hold of me. It has been a major work transition for me as well this past year and it is still on going. I suspect 2015 will be very busy and my ability to be at events will continue to be hampered at times but I will continue to make every effort to make the ones when I am not away overseas or working.

I would like to lay out some goals for each of the chapters this year.

1. 5% growth of the chapter

2. Some sort of effort that supports the mission of ATHS at the national level. Be it an effort to collect materials for the library, a fundraiser and/or submission of some sort of award for a local person or company. Remember we are a historical society not a club though we tend to be pretty club like in many activities.

3. Some sort of local community charity support event or effort. I know these things have been done in the past. Continue those you have and maybe look into something new or different that might reflect well on the chapter and society.

4. A concerted effort and strategy to reach younger perspective members. 5. Better communications through the chapters. Needs to be beyond the newsletter. I know not eve-

ryone does e-mail but that is changing. A working phone tree also needs to be there too. If there is a short notice formal or informal event, a mass e-mail and also phone tree should be employed with specific members tasked to call and talk or leave messages for a number of members. If you had a group of folks who could make 5 phone calls to the rest, that would do it.

6. I would like to say a few more things about our Chapter Operations. Every member has a part to

play and somehow they can contribute to the success of the chapter. It may be small things or it may be in taking your turn in a leadership position. It may take making a step out of your comfort zone and volunteering and or accepting the nomination for one of those positons where you might not be totally comfortable. Those of you not filling those positions can help by assisting those people. Don’t just come to be entertained, do your part to help sustain our organization.

Lastly in regards to my position as RVP. Given my work life, this position has never been some-

thing I could fully fulfill the way I might like to short of winning the lottery and retiring. It is also not a position that I will fill on a permanent basis. I will be looking to pass the baton on here in the future in the next few years without a set date at this point. I don’t see myself going on as a RVP (for Western WA/AK) beyond the Oregon show but will if needed. Probably the best option for the chapters and for my abilities would be for me to transition to an at-large position where I continue my co-chairmanship of the IT committee or turn it over entirely for the time being and focus on things at the chapter level. This is nothing that requires an immediate action but something I think is good to share.

Let’s have a productive and safe 2015. Let’s improve the society and our chapters. Don’t

forget to have fun while doing it and sharing that fun with others.

Semis, the rest of the story, well at least more of the story…..

In a previous issue of our NW Chapter newsletter we ran a story on the “Semi” and August Charles Fruehauf was mentioned as a builder of one of the first semi trailers. In 1914, he built a trailer at the request of a merchant to carry his pleasure boat. The merchant was please with the trailer so he asked Fruehauf to build additional trailers which the merchant would use to haul lum-ber and wood products. Fruehauf called his product a "semi-trailers". In 1918, Fruehauf incorpo-rated his trailer manufacturing business, and the Fruehauf Trailer Company was formed.

Around the same time, 1910, John C. Endebrock who worked at the Sechler Company, one of the largest manufacturers of carriages in the world, came to believe that the days of the horse-drawn wagon were coming to an end and would soon be obsolete. Endebrock believed the future would be in trailers pulled by motor vehicles and set out to de-sign a trailer that could be towed by a Ford Model "T" passenger car, then the leader in the light-car field. Initial experiments surrounded the dynamics of a spring wagon construction, but it was determined that this would not work. A totally new trailer had to be designed using the principles of automobile dy-namics. This new unit featured an angle iron chassis frame with cross-members, horn-type front spring hangers, a knuckle-type front axle, automobile springs, artillery wheels, roller bearings, and a draw bar with housed spring sections. In 1915, after months of rigorous road testing, the new trailer was introduced to the world. The name "Trailmobile" was chosen since the unit would "trail" an automobile. The wide acceptance of these first automotive trailers prompted the Sechler organization to change its name to The Trailmobile Company. What is believed to be Endebrock’s biggest con-tribution to the trucking industry was a devise that allowed a single driver to easily couple/uncouple the tractor to the trailer. The design was patented in 1919 after several years of Endebrock search-ing for an easier solution to attach and disengage the semi trailer, similar to how train cars were locked. Before this invention it took three men and jacks to unhook the trailer. After the introduction of the fifth wheel de-sign, which has changed very little to this day, one man could complete the task. The new design used a jaw with a spring locking device mounted on a fifth wheel plate that was attached to the tractor frame. The fifth wheel locked into a king pin on the bottom of the front end of the trailers. This design is very similar to the tractor fifth wheel and trailer king pin used to couple trac-tors and trailers today.
