Why a Revolution?
• Increased taxation from the French and Indian Conflict.
• More control from Britain.
• Major events:– Boston Massacre– Boston Tea Party
• Sons of Liberty
Minutemen
• Minutemen were farmers with ammunition and arms ready to fight a “defensive” war with Britain.
Lexington and Concord
• Paul Revere made his famous ride..
• William Dawes… the other one.
• April of 1775, Dawes and Revere ride out to warn of British troops coming from Boston.
• They make it to Lexington before they are arrested.

Strategy• The British return to New
York in the summer of 1776.
• 32,000 soldiers enter Boston with General William Howe.
• “Surrender, or face a battle against my men.”
• Washington shows up, with 19,000 men.
• They rejected Howe’s offer.
Failed Strategy and Yorktown
• Divide the Colonies.• Yorktown• Lafayette, Washington,
Rochambeau, de Grasse, completely surround Cornwallis.
• He surrenders his 7,000 men as a band plays, “The world turned upside down”
The United States of America
• After a failed startup with the Articles of Confederation, we get it right with the Constitution and subsequent Bill of Rights.
• Utilized Enlightenment thinkers in both documents.
