BRITISH RULE CONTINUED Sugar Act passes 1764
Effects merchants and upper class. Stamp Act 1765
All printed items must have stamp. Britain doesn’t want colonies becoming
free.
TENSIONS BUILD Colonists boycott Britain goods. Show resistance to British rule. Unfair trade laws by Britain. Colonists trying to create own nation. British troops in colonial homes. Colonists jobs stolen by British troops.
BOSTON MASSACRE Occurred March 5th, 1770. Protest aimed at British troops. Protesters throw snowballs at troops. Solider gets hit, orders open fire. 3 townspeople are killed.
TEA AND CRUMPETS? Tea Act passes, tax on tea. How the British are involved?
Rigging of colonies market.Monopoly on the market.Makes it tough to purchase tea.
Anger towards Britain, Colonists love tea.
BOSTON TEA PARTY Occurred on December 16th, 1773. Colonists dressed up as Indians. Boarded a ship, dumped tea off. Britain closes:
Boston harbor.No town meetings/must host soldiers.
“LIBERTY OR DEATH”-PATRICK HENRY Suffolk Resolves
Boycott and enforce new laws. War breaks out in 1775. Continental congress begins making
laws. George Washington becomes
commander-in-chief.
COLONISTS BREAK AWAY Congress declares independence, July
2nd, 1776. Declaration of Independence, July 4th,
1776.Taxation without representation.Troops in Colonial homes.Freedom of speech and assembly.Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness.
THE BATTLES Saratoga 1777
Shows colonists can hang with Britain.Spanish and France, Join U.S. side.Recognize them as independent nation.Sign mutual defense treaty.
Yorktown 1783, British surrender.

ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION 1777 Limits power of congress and states. Unanimous vote to pass legislation. Nationally impose taxes, conduct foreign
affairs. Articles don’t work. Prevent things from getting done.
CONSTITUTION Philadelphia May 14th, 1787.
Revision of Articles of Confederation.Three branches of government.Raise National revenue.No restrictions of voting.Electoral college and popular vote.
BILL OF RIGHTS 1791 Religious freedom. Right to bear arms. Trial by jury. No solders in households. Right to speedy trial.
