PREFACEThe idea for a composition competition came up in 2013 at an ARS board meeting during a lively discussion of the (then) upcoming 75th anniversary of the ARS. How should we celebrate this wonderful milestone? We wanted to take on a project that we could afford, that we could complete in time, and that would be meaningful to as many ARS members as possible. The ARS is 75! Composition Competition consisted of five categories: Quartet/Quintet at the chapter reading level; Duo/Trio for low intermediate players; Solo for the advanced player; Recorder Orchestra piece at the upper intermediate level; and a category for young composers. I am pleased to present the winner of the Recorder Orchestra category. A recording of the composer’s performance is available for download at www.americanrecorder.org. Judges’ comments: Bravo! Very nicely and tastefully done! Great instrumentation and great usage of the orchestra. Using the soprano in measure 76 accompaniment was a bold choice. Helen-Jean Talbott started playing recorders and flutes at age 8 and never stopped. She is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agronomy. After lengthy careers as a scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Director of Credit Policy MIS for a major financial company, she began to pursue music full time, earning her Master of Music degree in recorder performance at The Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University in 2009. The Washington Flute Society selected her flute and guitar composition Canzona for the 2004 Flute Fair composers’
concert. In addition to composing music, Helen-Jean performs medieval and renaissance music with the Peabody Renaissance Ensemble and Consort Anon. Her performance venues include Amherst Early Music Festival, Maryland Renaissance Festival, and medieval banquets. She also performs music for worship services and concerts at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Bowie, Maryland. The arranger writes: “One of Claude Debussy’s most popular piano works is Reverie, published in 1909. I became familiar with this evocative music through a beautiful arrangement for flute and piano. My flute part contained all the flowing melodic lines. My pianist got to play the intricate arpeggios over many octaves of the piano, but seldom played the melody. For my recorder orchestra arrangement of Reverie, I wanted to share the melody among several different instruments. The range of arpeggio notes in Debussy’s Reverie also gave me the perfect opportunity to engage all of the members of the recorder orchestra — from contrabass to soprano.”
Performance notes:
Measures 1-5 need to have a relaxed, dreamy feel. Take the time to properly set the mood.
Dynamics and intonation — Observe the markings for dynamics. Although recorders have limitations on how loud and soft they can be played and remain in tune, as a group the changes in dynamic level can be very effective. Soft does not mean unsupported sound. I also create dynamics by doubling instruments at unisons and octaves, which also means that players must be mindful to keep notes in tune within their section and across sections of the orchestra.
Articulation — Unlike a lot of recorder music, this arrangement does have real slurs. The dashed slurs indicate phrasing marks. Use legato articulation to play notes as gently and smoothly as possible. Staccato notes should be separated, but not too short. For the tenuto marks in measure 92, hold the notes for their full value, but give them a little more emphasis than for normal legato articulation.
Arpeggios and melodic lines — Arpeggios cover a very wide range, and portions are passed from instrument to instrument. Play these notes so that they fit well into the overall shape and character of the arpeggio. Likewise, the melodic lines are shared across several instruments to use the best range of the instruments and to create interesting color changes.
Tutti vs solo — Passages marked “solo” mean one instrument, not necessarily a featured line. Let the melody be prominent. An example is measure 76. The bass and soprano recorders, both marked “solo”, have call-and-response arpeggios which need to be played gently so as not to cover the alto recorder which has the melody. “Tutti” includes all players for that part.
