2 AIWC NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012 CONNECTING ENGLISH-SPEAKING WOMEN OF ALL NATIONALITIES
CLUB POLICIES AIWC DISCLAIMER Members are reminded that participation in AIWC activities is entirely at the members’ own discretion and/or risk. Neither the club nor its representatives shall be held responsible for injury, damage, or loss incurred by participation in club events or the use of club property. It is club policy that all activity leaders, committee members, and participants be members of the AIWC. The AIWC reserves the right to publish in the newsletter photos taken at club events. AIWC GUEST POLICY A member may bring one guest to AIWC meetings when space permits. AIWC members always have priority. The AIWC member is responsible for paying a non-member fee for her guest. AIWC NO-SHOW POLICY If you fail to attend a meeting for which you have reserved a place and have not cancelled by the designated date, you will be charged for yourself and/or your guest.
As 2012 is a leap year, last month we had one extra day. However, I don't believe it helped with our club's inevitable scheduling conflicts. We all do so much and our events seem to pile up on the same days. Recently, Anne Heggie, leader of our Free Spirits activity group, and Marina Torchio, co-leader with Janik Desbiens of the Explore Lausanne activity group, solved one of these conflicts by combining outings to visit the Patek Phillipe museum in Geneva. Through communication and flexibility these women enabled their groups' members to take part in a terrific event without having to choose between competing outings. I urge all activity group leaders and area hostesses to consult the Events Calendar and with appropriate Board Members prior to scheduling events so we don't step on one another's toes. Speaking of events, I'm looking forward to interesting entertainment and more of Community Services Chair Gilla Stead's terrific cooking at the Middle Eastern Evening on Saturday March 24! See further in this newsletter for more details and sign up online.
While February was longer than normal, please note that, at least for the club, April will be much shorter. The AIWC offices will be closed the first two weeks of April concurrent with the school holidays. The offices will re-open on April 16. The scheduling of office volunteers (there is always room for more!) meeting rooms has been taken over by new member Kathy Radford as Office Manager Evelyne Burridge has stepped down to devote more time to her outside employment. Many thanks to Evelyne for all her efforts with regard to the AIWC offices and best wishes with the job. Evelyne will continue to help with the scheduling of the upstairs rooms of the clubhouse held by the Maison des Femmes. Please contact Kathy or other office volunteers to reserve the club meeting room or library and contact Evelyne for MDF rooms - both on [email protected] or by calling the AIWC office on 021 320 2688. This newsletter includes the slate of candidates for our club's elected positions for the club year 2012-2013. Our members recently voted to eliminate the separate position of Corresponding Secretary and create one secretary position; thus, this slate consists of four candidates for the offices of President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. Thank you to the Nominating Committee for their

WWW.AIWC-LAUSANNE.ORG AIWC NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012 5
Doris Dorward moved to Switzerland with her family in 1968 and almost immediately became one of the then American Women’s Club’s founding members. She was president of the Club from 1975 to 1977. I have asked several people for their memories of Doris and they reveal a fun-loving lady with a strong social attitude, always caring for others and someone who will be missed by many. Doris was born and grew up in California and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, distinguishing herself not only academically but also as president of the prestigious Mortar Board Society. She enjoyed teaching Math and English and specialized in preparing students for American University entrance exams. She also had many Swiss adult private students and continued working well into her 80s. Doris was always an active member of the AWC and held several board positions. Socially involved with the club’s groups, she especially enjoyed hiking, cycling and bridge. In the 1970s she was one of the six AWC Volunteers who helped Terre des Hommes bring Korean orphans to Switzerland to be adopted by Swiss families. Swiss Air offered free passage to the volunteers who travelled in twos and could take any route as long as they arrived in Korea on the given date. Vivienne Furtwangler travelled with Doris and told us: ‘Doris and I stayed in Greece, Thailand, Hong Kong and Tokyo. We stayed a week in Japan as Doris had a village she particularly wanted to visit as her Japanese gardener in California had spoken of its beauty. We were followed everywhere and we were too tall to ignore. We brought back 13 children, one being a baby who slept in a hammock on the plane’. This journey involved the two volunteers transiting through Tokyo airport with all the children and only sign language for communication! Later in life Doris took up bridge and with her mathematical mind played very well. Anne Krayenbuhl remembers: ‘Doris organised the Bridge Group for several years and she was the one who suggested donating the bridge money to Transport Handicap, the first amount was over Fr 500. She had a wonderful outlook on life and often when unable to sleep at night she’d listen to an old favourite record and holding her walker she’d dance or she’d play a game of patience!’ Doris was a keen reader and she wanted others to enjoy books too. Sara Ruegg began helping her: ‘I met Doris at an area coffee and we started playing bridge. I bought a book or two from her and then helped her with boxes of second hand books she took to sell at AWC meetings in different hotels. We spent many a happy hour sorting books in her cellar and recommending books to each other.’ The funds from these book sales were donated to the AWC charities. The AIWC continued to play an important part in Doris’s life and she would have attended the Christmas Tea if she had been able. She was a lady who lived a fulfilled, active life and along the way helped many fellow human beings. She will be fondly remembered. -Linda Dyson
