Allergy ReliefEach spring, as trees and grassesrelease pollen, tens of millions of
North Americans begin to suffer. Theirbodies react to pollens as if they were
dangerous bacteria or viruses, prompting immune reactions that
release histamine into the blood. Theinflammatory response, commonly
known as hay fever, includessymptoms such as runny nose,
sneezing, congestion and itchy eyes.Be proactive in the fight against
seasonal allergies by startingmedications early in the season. Youcan build up immunity by regularlytaking antihistamines before pollencounts get high. Nondrowsy productsare usually the best bet.
Keep pollen from circulatingthrough your home by closingwindows and leaving shoes at thedoor. Clean often, and use a vacuumwith a HEPA filter. Remember tovacuum under the bed.
Pollen sticks to clothing, skin andhair, so change clothes when youarrive home, and shower at night sothat you don’t breathe in pollen whileyou sleep. Changing bed sheets andpillowcases regularly will also help.
Try to stay indoors on high-pollendays. You can monitor pollen countsin your area through smartphone appsor websites such aswww.Weather.com orwww.Pollen.com.
If you still experience symptomsthat affect your quality of life, considerallergy shots. Consult an allergist oryour regular physician about thislong-term option.
