Sewing Instructions

1. With right sides together, stitch the shoulder seams

of the right and left coat front to the coat back. Repeat

with the lining.

2. With right sides together, pin the collar pieces

along the short ends and the outside curved edge.

3. Stitch.

4. Clip the corners and curves. Trim seam. Turn

right side out.

Knits often roll in on themselves when they are

turned right side out. To prevent this, smooth out

the seam and then pin it to keep it from rolling

inward. This will help with the next step.

5. Top stitch along the outside edge and ends of

the collar.

6. Find the middle of the collar and the middle of

the back coat lining. Pin the two spots together.

7. Continue to pin the rest of the collar to the

bodice.

Make sure that you have a 1 ¼” space between the

end of the collar and the edge of the coat front.

8. Stitch along the edge of the collar.

This stitching will hold the collar in place while

the rest of the coat is being constructed.

9. With right sides together, pin the coat to thecoat lining.

The seam will go up the front and around the

collar.

The Sleeves

1. Fold the bottom edge of the sleeve over ¼” and

over again. Pin. Stitch along the edge.

2. With right sides together, pin the sleeve to the

bodice.

The Bottom of the Coat

5. Look at the coat bottom pattern piece and

locate the “gathering dots”. Mark these dots on

the fabric. Stitch a gathering stitch in between

these marks.

6. With right sides together, pin the coat bottom

to the coat top. Gather between the gathering

thread to make the coat bottom the correct length.

7. Stitch.

8. Serge or zig-zag stitch the seam to finish it.

8. Top stitch on the bodice above the upper edge of the

coat bottom. This will make the seam lay flat.

The inside view of the coat. The coat bottom upper edge is

lying up! Do not stitch it folded down! This will cause the

coat to not lie neatly!

Finishing Touches

1. Top stitch along the front edge and along the collar

of the coat.

The red line in the photo below illustrates where this

topstitching goes.

2. Locate the button and the button hole placementmarks on the pattern pieces.

Using a pencil, lightly mark the placement marks

onto the coat. I suggest using a white washout cloth

pencil for this. Using these marks as guides…

3. Sew the button holes.

4. Sew the buttons on.

Test the buttons and button holes as you go to make

sure that each one is correctly placed.

You’re finished!
