Gangs in the United States

Gangs in the United StatesJacob Seickell & Lily SmithOrigins of GangsStreet gangs in the united states date back to the early 20th century.Presently, the most publicized street gangs in the US are African American, black gangs were not recognized as a social problem until after the great migration of 1910. Gangs in the 19th century were often multi-ethnic as neighborhoods did not display the social polarization that has segregated different ethnic groups in postmodern society.20th century gangs arrived with a new wave of migration in the 1960s.

Activities of GangsMost gangs in the United States are formed with some type of intention. Gangs such as Latin Kings and the Bloods say they represent "brotherhood" and unity. Police say 80% of crimes throughout the country are committed by gang members.[8] Although most gangs started in major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and New York City.[9] they migrated to other U.S. cities such as Atlanta, Memphis, Orlando, Houston and Detroit [10][11][12] after becoming more sophisticated and powerful.Races of GangsAfrican American 34%Hispanic 47%White 13%Asian 6%
