With President Obama's administration struggling to cope with the first six months of its second term, political analysts are already trying to second-guess the effectiveness of what many consider to be the most important area of concern - national security.

What is obvious to even the most inexperienced observer is that all the major players are new to their position on the national security team, including Secretaries of State, Defense and Treasury - John Kerry, Chuck Hagel and Jacob Lew, as well as CIA chief, John Brennan.

This comes at a time when any number of critical issues, including the continuing turmoil in the Mideast and East Asia, could result in a major conflict and possible U.S. involvement.

North Korea's, Pyongyang, is another wild card. Any miscalculation on the part of the most seasoned experts could lead to a war on the Korean peninsula that would have international consequences.

Washington is also wrestling with how to respond to the Syrian nightmare with over 80,000 citizens killed. Should we intervene? And, if so, how? At the same time, Israel continues to draw attention to the dangers represented by a nuclear capable Iran. This raises another question, should the U.S. join Israel in a pre-emptive strike?

The English-Speaking Union's May speaker, Tyrus (Ty) Cobb will be addressing these and other issues on Wednesday, May 1, when he examines the subject, "American Foreign Security Policy after the 2012 Presidential Election."

His first-hand experience as Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan and Director, Soviet, Canadian & European Affairs of the National Security Council (White House) are among career choices related to what he refers to as "Crisis Control."

But, today, the U.S. is facing a war on an entirely new front. The most difficult challenges may lie in the economic and digital realms, including the possibility of a massive Cyber attack that could cripple our military and devastate our infrastructure.

And, finally, how does the United States reduce the massive debt it has accumulated - now over $17 trillion and growing - and still maintain economic growth?

E-SU members can expect Cobb to discuss these national security challenges at the May meeting and provide in-depth insights into the emerging Obama 2nd term national security team.

Dr. Cobb, Col. (ret) US Army spent 26 years in the military, including two combat tours in Viet Nam, along with assignments in Italy, Germany and a professorship at West Point.

He was the "last soldier to return from Viet Nam" 40 years ago and the first American to meet with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong after the Paris Peace Accords was signed. He is currently the CEO of the 'National Security Forum" based in Reno, Nevada.

Membership in the Sandhills Branch of the English-Speaking Union is open to the public. For more information on becoming a member and the upcoming May 1 program, contact Hope Price at (910) 692-7727 or at [email protected].

The Search Committee for the next ESUUS Chair has recommended General Josiah Bunting for the position of Chairman of ESUUS. Please see the attached CV that Alice Boyne sent to members of the National Board. I think you will agree with me that we have found an outstanding educator for the position and one who will bring strength to both the NY office and to the Branches. Noteworthy is the fact that he hails from Region IV!!!! He no doubt knows about the Lexington Branch. His son won the Shakespeare competition and made the trip to New York. So, his history with ESU goes back a few years. He will be attending our May 1st event. CLICK HERE FOR GEN BUNTINGS CV
