Introduction to Feng Shui Case Study 7 Class Pre-requisite: FS201 Advanced Feng Shui Class. It is preferable that you have taken AS101 Stems and Branches and the Chinese

Calendar, but his is not required. Case Study Classes may be taken in any order. They do not follow a sequence. The series of Case Study Classes from American Feng Shui Institute contain practical information beyond our Advanced Feng Shui Class. As the name implies, these classes include case studies from Master Sang’s files. Case studies are informative because they are real-life examples of how to apply feng shui. Each case we present has some special conditions you may encounter. For example, in this class, one of the cases discusses a workplace where the center and the entrance have similar star combinations, and this brings a double dose of danger. After studying this case, you will be able to recognize and remedy similar situations in your own practice. Many of the Master Sang’s case studies are used to illustrate sentences from old memorization poems. The Chinese frequently developed memorization poems as a way of facilitating the recall of information. The poems are not necessarily beautiful, but they are easy to memorize (if you speak Chinese). We do the same thing in English, but less often. Here is an example:

Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November: All the rest have thirty-one, Except for February alone.

(According to wikipedia.com, this came from a 14th century poem and has many alternate versions.) To use Chinese memorization poems, you need to have some instruction in order to understand the information. But once you understand the usage, the poem can easily remind you of the full meaning. However, the poem is cryptic to the uninitiated. One feng shui book, written in the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911) is called Master Shen’s Xuankong Knowledge.1 In the third volume, its author compiled a number of these poems, including Ode to the Profound Mechanism,2 Xuankong Secret Decree,3 Ode of the Flying Stars,4 and Purple-White Poem.5

1 《沈氏玄空學》 shenshi xuankong xue, by沈竹礽 Shen Zhureng. 2 《玄機賦》 xuanji fu 3 《玄空秘旨》 xuankong mizhi 4 《飛星賦》 feixing fu 5 《紫白訣》 zibai jue

In Case Study 7, you will encounter a few sentences from these poems and see how they are applied. Besides the actual case studies, many of these classes present additional techniques that you may use in your readings. Case Study 7 instructs you in the usage of three personal stars. These are called ‘personal stars’ because they are related to birth data, not to the house itself. Different residents of the same house will use the personal stars differently because their birth dates are not the same. For those who have not taken the Stems and Branches and the Chinese Calendar class: The Stems and Branches and the Chinese Calendar class is not a prerequisite for Case Study 7. However, an understanding of the stems and branches is needed to fully understand the calculation for the personal stars. We will explain how to locate the stars, even if you do not know the stems and branches, but if you want to understand them more deeply, you should take that class and then re-read this document.

Part 1: Case Studies

Introduction In Chinese medicine, there is something called the Four Methods of Diagnosis (四診). This is the methodology by which a doctor gathers information about a patient in order to arrive at a diagnosis. These Four Methods can also be applied to inspecting a house. Heaven and earth are considered the big taiji . In medicine, the body is considered a small taiji . We can call a building a medium taiji . Therefore, we can find many parallels between the practice of medicine and the practice of feng shui.

The Universe A Building The Human Body

The Four Methods of Diagnosis are:

1. 望診 Looking: In medicine, we look at the face, the complexion, the expression in the eyes, the tongue, as well as the overall demeanor. In feng shui, we look at the internal and external environment. 2. 聞診 Listening/smelling: In medicine, we listen to the sound of the voice, of breathing, of cough, etc. We also notice if the patient has any particular smell. In feng shui, we should always check for ‘sense’ sha. If anything in the environment offends the senses: the smell of a cat box, a musty odor, the noise of living near an airport, etc. – all of these are sha for the people who live there. 3. 問診 Asking: In medicine, we need to ask about the patient’s appetite, sleep, emotional state, and so forth. In feng shui, we ask the client about the problems they have had since they moved into the house.

Page 8: American Feng Shui Institute · the American Feng Shui Institute be liable for any damages, including, without limitation, incidental and consequential damages and damages for lost

© 2006 American Feng Shui Institute Feng Shui Case Study 7 4

4. 切診 Feeling: In medicine, we feel the pulse to know what is going on inside the body. The pulse tells us the state of the internal organs. In feng shui, we use the luopan to take a compass reading in order to determine the condition of the house’s qi. In both cases, we are using something on the outside to determine the state of the inside, something which is not visible to the eyes.

We remind you that the compass reading is only one part of the examination of the house. Do not forget to use all your senses in your evaluations.

This is the business of jewelry contractor. In 1993, two workers were injured and then sued. So we need to check for the cause of injuries and lawsuits. Analysis The building was built in 1972, so it belongs to period 6. It was read during period 7, in 1993, a year with 7 red6 in the center.

67.5° - 82.5° The building is Wang Shan Wang Shui. 6 white was wang when the building was built. Even though it is now period 7, the 6 is still fairly strong, and 6 tends to be financially beneficial: metal stars are good for money. The money (or water) 8 white is in the center on the right. While it is now locked in period 8, when this reading was done, the money 8 was not locked and improved the financial potential of the house. There should be no financial problems (Wang Shan Wang Shui, good money star in the center, prominent 6’s). But safety is a factor: metal element stars (the prominent 6’s in this building) can easily cause injury by metal (knives, machines, guns, car crash, etc.) and bleeding. The strength of the metal is intensified by the contents of the building: it is a jewelry factory, so there is a lot of metal inside (machines, jewelry). The center is the potential and cannot be remedied. If it is imbalanced, we should be sure that the important areas of a building do not reinforce the same type of imbalance. Here, a 4-8 is in center. Wood (4 green) dominates earth (8 white), so it is easy to have problems with anything associated with gen trigram (8 white) in this house. This includes young men (the workers), children in general, the arms, hands, fingers, spine, any of the small bones of the body, and pregnancy. The results tend to be miscarriage, broken arms, and/or injury to youth.

6 For the various associations of the nine flying stars, see Appendix 2.

Since this building has 4-8 in the center, the 8-3 entrance reinforces the problem. It is also wood (3 jade) dominating earth (8 white). The 8 white earth star is dominated in two places. You should not use a 3-8 entrance with a 4-8 center (or vice versa). This is especially true in manufacturing, where injuries easily occur. The center is the nature or possibility; the entrance makes it happen. This same type of situation should also be avoided with important rooms, such as a bedroom or office. It is best not to allow star combinations like these to repeat at the center and at an entrance or in a commonly used room. The center cannot be remedied. It is like a person’s DNA, which cannot be treated except by very special means. We cannot remedy the 4-8 in the center. The best thing to do is to change the entrance to another place with different stars. If we cannot do that, then we can use red (fire) at the door to soften the domination. The 4 green (wood) feeds red (fire) which feeds the 8 white star (earth). There is no more domination. The problem with using fire is that in years when the annual 2 or 5 arrive at the door, the fire brings harm. That is why changing the location of the door is best. In general, injury combinations are 3-8, 4-8, 6-6, or 6-7. 3-8 and 4-8 bring accidental injuries or miscarriage. 6-6 and 6-7 bring accidental injuries or injuries due to a fight. As we have said, metal element stars can easily cause injury by metal (knives, machines, guns, car crash, etc.) and bleeding. The 6 is worse than the 7 for injuries because 6 is ‘hard metal.’ It is associated with qian gua, which has three yang (hard) lines. 7 is associated with dui gui, the younger daughter, so it is not as hard. Injuries are possible with a 7-7 combination, but are not as likely because the two metal stars are ‘soft.’ While we have seen that this building has a strong potential for injuries, there must be a trigger to make them occur. This trigger is the influence of the current year stars. Here is the building’s chart with the current year stars for 1993:

This building sits east so it is a zhen house, associated with 3 jade and the wood element. The current year (1993) was a 7 red year, associated with metal. In the center, the house (zhen, 3 jade, wood) is dominated by the year (7 red, metal). This affects not just the center, but the whole house. The annual 7 also reduces the money (water) 8 white in the center.

山 Since it is a zhen house, its wood nature reinforces the strength of the people (mountain) 4 green to dominate the money (water) 8 white. This makes the 4-8 problem worse. If it were a li house instead, the 4-8 problem would be reduced because the fire of li would help soften the domination. Since the above two paragraphs refer to the center, no remedy is available. This year, the problem at the entrance is also worsened. The annual 3 jade at the entrance (in the north) gangs up with the money (water) star. These two 3 jades double-dominate the people 8 white (earth). The nature of 3 jade is to bring arguments and lawsuits... so this is the year that the injuries and lawsuits occur.

After you have taken the Advanced Feng Shui Class, some of you may have stopped looking at the Intermediate Class method using the annual number and the house trigram. However, often this method gives insight. Here is the same building with the annual number and the house trigram:

山 Zhen (f to r)

Here is a couple of sentences from the memorization poem called Purple-White Poem7:

七逢三到生財﹐豈識財多被盜。 三遇七臨生病﹐那知病愈遭官。 When 7 meets 3, first you receive money, and afterwards you get robbed. When 3 meets 7, you get sick, and afterwards a lawsuit comes.

The first sentence means the annual 3 arrives into a section where the house 7 is already placed. It is only referring to the annual 3 and the house 7. It does not apply to the people and money stars. It can apply to the center, the entrance, or other significant sections. If this configuration of stars occurs, a lot of money may come, but after that you get robbed. Either don’t use the section, or get a good alarm system to prevent robbery. The meaning of the first sentence is derived like this: the 7 metal dominates the 3 wood. There is a saying that ‘what I dominate brings money.’ This is mostly used in Four Pillars and does not always apply in fengshui, but here it does. The permanent 7 (which represents ‘me’ because it is my house) dominates the visiting 3 so money comes. However, 7 red is associated with robbery (actually, so is 3 jade), so a robbery comes afterwards. (If you have forgotten these associations, you can check the Intermediate or Advanced Feng Shui Class material.) The second sentence means the annual 7 arrives in a section where the house 3 resides. As above, it does not apply to the people and money stars.

7 《紫白訣》 zibai jue

Page 14: American Feng Shui Institute · the American Feng Shui Institute be liable for any damages, including, without limitation, incidental and consequential damages and damages for lost

In this sentence, we use the word ‘lawsuit’ but the Chinese term is actually broader. It means any kind of interference by the government: tax problems, regulations, inspections, etc., as well as lawsuit. The meaning of the second sentence is derived like this: the 7 metal dominates the 3 wood. There is a saying that ‘what dominates me brings illness.’ Once again, this does not always apply in fengshui. The visiting 7 dominates the permanent 3 (which represents ‘me’ because it is my house) so there is illness of some sort. However, 3 jade is associated with lawsuits and government interference, so that comes afterwards. In this case study, the annual 7 arrives in the center where the house 3 resides. It fulfills the requirements of the second sentence: When 3 meets 7, you get sick, and afterwards a lawsuit comes. The center governs the whole house, so there was no way to avoid its effects. We had injury rather than illness, but the result is the same: damage to the body. After the injury came lawsuits, just as predicted.

A 3-7 or 7-3 combination is difficult to fix. You can use fire to reduce the 3 jade (wood), but it dominates the 7 red (metal). If you use water to fix the domination, it makes the 3 jade star stronger, possibly bringing lawsuits and arguments. This case study took place during period 7, when 7 red was wang. Now, in period 8, the 7 red has less benefit and is even grouchier because it is no longer king.

山 Besides the above problems, the executive office has a 5-9. People who work there are always sick (5 yellow causes illness), especially in the eyes (9 purple: li trigram represents the eyes). To summarize the problems with this building: The center and the entrance both have similar combinations that cause injury. There is lawsuit qi, especially this year. The prominent 6’s add to the possibility of injury. The office has a 5-9 combination.

67.5° - 82.5° There is too much moving metal in the jewelry factory already, so we don’t need to add more for the 2’s and 5’s. However, if the building was used for some other purpose and did not have so much metal, we would need to add it to the southeast (5-9) and northeast (1-5) in large quantity, and a smaller amount in the southwest (7-2) and west (2-6). In addition, the annual 5 yellow star is in the east, and we would need to place metal there until the next February 4th. We move the entrance to the west, where there is a 2-6 combination. The 6 white is on the money (water) side. Even though it is in decline during period 7, it is still a good money number. Lots of metal reduces the 2 black (metal from the west section, the money 6 white, and the machines in this section of the factory). Besides having a better combination for money, this entrance is no longer has injury stars reinforcing the injury stars in the center. The 3 jade, which brings lawsuits, is also less prominent in the building now. The showroom needs to be next to the office. Therefore, we need to find two decent sections next to each other. Neither the showroom nor the office should be in: the northeast: 1-5 generally means taking drugs. the southeast: 5-9 brings sickness, delays, and unhappiness. the northwest: 3-7 is a domination, bringing gossip and lawsuits. the north: 8-3 was already giving us problems (injuries) as an entrance. We move the office to the southwest, where there is a 7-2 combination. The 7 red is strong during period 7. Once again, lots of metal reduces the 2 black. It is not perfect, but there is no other good place.

The showroom is moved to the south, where there is a 9-4 combination. These are good bright numbers, although they will not especially bring income. However, the 4 green is good for name. 4 green is xun, wind, so your name circulates like the wind and goes all over. It is also associated with Wen Qu, which means fame or good name.8 In the east, there is a 6-1 combination: Here, we place a water fountain. Water in the east enhances money during period 7. It also reduces the 6 white which is a little too strong for a zhen wood house’s sitting. The same would apply for a 7 red in a zhen house’s sitting. You can consider dominations like this in other houses as well (for example, 2 black, 5 yellow, or 8 white – all earth – in a kan house’s sitting).

67.5° - 82.5° Here is our list of the problems with this building and their remedies: The center and the entrance both had similar combinations that cause injury. We

moved the entrance so there is no longer this double-dose. There was lawsuit qi, especially this year. Moving the entrance also helped take care

of this. The prominent 6 whites increased the possibility of injury. We added water to the 6

white in the sitting section to reduce it. This water in the east will also increase income.

The office had a 5-9 combination. We moved the office to a better location.

The factory was built during period 6. It sits south (m to a) so it is a li house. It is double-sitting, and locked this year for money (because the annual 2 locks the money 2 in the center). The building is double-sitting, so it is good for people, not for money. However, it is a period 6 house with 7 red on the money side in the facing section. This is second best to wang shan wang shui.

山 Example of a second-best wang shan wang shui

During period 6 and period 7, this house will act like it is wang shan wang shui because the people position in the sitting section is happy with the 6 (wang when it was built), and the money position in the facing section is happy with the 7 (upcoming star when it was built and wang during period 7). However, once period 8 arrives, the house reverts to a double-sitting nature.

This type of configuration also occurs in double-facing houses with a similar distribution of stars. In either case, the external remedies may be used (water in back for double-sitting or mountain in front for double-facing), but are less necessary than for other double-facing or double-sitting buildings. However, after the subsequent time period, the outdoor remedies need to be applied because the house reverts to its double-sitting or double facing-nature. So this house, at the time it was read, was like a wang shan wang shui house. People and money overall can get good results. The center potential is 1-2. There is also a 2-1 in the southeast, although this section is not too important in this case. This combination means females are in charge. In homes, it often means divorce because most men will not allow their wife to be in charge. But if the husband is okay with a strong wife and listens to her, divorce can be avoided. The reason a 1-2 or 2-1 means women in charge and divorce is from another memorization poem, Ode to the Profound Mechanism9:

坎流坤位,買臣常遭婦賤之羞。 When kan flows into the kun position, Maichen’s cheap wife insults him. This refers to an old story from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 221 CE). Zhu Maichen was a poor scholar who had problems passing the imperial exams. His wife forced a divorce on him so that she could marry a richer person. Eventually, Zhu became a high official, but his wife’s second marriage didn’t work out. She asked him to take her back. Zhu poured water in the street and told her that when she could gather up all the water that was spilt, he would remarry her. To further analyze this combination, you can look at it by the trigrams. Kan corresponds to 1 white. Kun corresponds to 2 black. 2, kun is the mother, a powerful woman. It is earth and dominates the 1 water. 1 is kan gua, the middle son. So a younger, less powerful male is dominated by an older more powerful female. The point of this sentence is that when a 1-2 or 2-1 combination appears, a woman will dominate or even insult a man. Back to this factory: in the center, the strength of the money 2 black is enhanced by the annual 2 black, giving this building even more potential for problems with females. To add insult to injury, the annual 2 black makes a money lock, causing a decrease in income this year.

Besides the problems with the center, the entrance could use some help. There is a 7-5 at the entrance, along with an annual 5: not good for money. Even though the 7 was wang when this house was read, it is on the people (mountain) side. The money (water) star is 5 yellow, so this is not a good door for money.

The boss’s problems with female employees are due to the 1-2 in the center. While the money has generally been adequate, the income is somewhat restricted because the money 2 in the center is weak during the 7 cycle and because the 7-5 at the entrance is not strong for money. This year’s increase in intensity of the problems is due to: The annual money lock The additional 2 in the center gives women additional power The annual 5 at the entrance invites in further bad luck

This is another factory. There is plenty of metal inside. Metal remedies should have a big surface area. This absorbs more sha than a big weight with a small surface area. All the machines in this factory give a large surface area for metal. We don’t need to add more for the 5’s and 2’s.

The main entrance is moved to the north, where there is a 5-7 star combination. This is better for money than the previous door location (7-5 in the northeast) because the wang 7 is now on the money side. Metal there already reduces the 5. We also add water to the 6-6 area in the south. This reduces the 6-6 which is too strong. Both 6’s are hard metal, so it is easy for them to cause injury. There is a situation called fire burns heaven’s gate; it consists of 6-6 in the south, 9-9 in the northwest, or a 6-9 or 9-6 combination anywhere. This condition is specific to 6 white, associated with qian gua, the northwest, the father, or the male owner. Qian gua is associated with heaven, hence the name, fire burns heaven’s gate. The west and dui gua (7 flying star) are not considered part of this configuration. It can cause problems for the male owner, who is represented by qian 6. This is because the fire of the 9 purple or of the south melts the metal of the 6 white or of the northwest.

In this case, the 6-6 in the south not only brings the possibility of injury, but it also weakens the male owner since it is fire burning heaven’s gate. Because the male owner is weakened, the 1-2 in the center is able to have more effect, helping the female employees dominate the weakened male owner. For a 9-6 or other variations on fire burning heaven’s gate, you can generally add earth to reduce the domination. But here, earth will only strengthen the possibility of injury by metal since it increases the strength of the double 6’s. That is why we still must use water. Hopefully, the water will put out the fire so it cannot burn heaven’s gate.

If water can be placed outside, we can remove the annual lock. However, many people do not want to go to the time and expense for an annual lock. They may prefer to wait out the year. Twenty-year locks are much more significant. It is hard to wait 20 years for a problem to go away. The center potential is 1-2, giving females more power than the male boss. We cannot change the center potential; there is no remedy. There is also a 2-1 in the southeast. Normally we would add metal in the southeast but there is already enough metal in this factory. But we should be sure we don’t place an important room there. To summarize, the income may pick up because we now have a better entrance (the qi mouth for the building). The money situation should really improve after February 4th, 1990, when the annual money lock disappears. We cannot do too much for the owner’s problems with women, as this is the potential of the building. This too will improve in the new year because the annual 2 will leave the center. It may improve somewhat in the meantime, as we have done something to remedy the fire burning heaven’s gate, which was sapping the owner’s strength.

Part 2: Personal Stars Introduction Whether the feng shui of a house is good or bad, it has other effects on its occupants based on their birth data. The door may be in a consuming direction for one occupant, but in a prosperity direction for someone else. In a certain house, one resident might make a lot of money while another resident spends a lot of money, depending on the door direction and the individual’s birth data. One house could sit in someone’s sleep-alone direction while another could sit in an orientation that brings them peach blossom. There are many different types of personal directions. Each is calculated differently and has different effects. In addition, there may be different parameters for using or avoiding these directions. Usually it involves the sitting, the main entrance, the bedroom door, the head of the bed, or the placement of an object. We call these personal stars because they are based on an individual’s birth data, not on the innate qi of the house. While we call them stars, you should be aware that they are not necessarily a star you can point to in the sky. They are really just another type of qi generated by the interaction of the person’s birth qi and a direction (or time). In this Case Study 7 Class, we will cover three of these personal stars. Others will be discussed in other case study classes. For those who have not taken the Stems and Branches and the Chinese Calendar class: The class in the Stems and Branches and the Chinese Calendar was not a prerequisite for this class. Here, we will explain how to locate the stars, even if you do not know the stems and branches. However, if you want to fully understand the calculation, you should take that class and then re-read this document. We will not cover that background here.

文昌 Wen Chang and 文曲 Wen Qu Wen Chang and Wen Qu are stars of creativity and the arts. 文 wen means, ‘literature, culture, education, writing, language.’ From this, it also has connotations of elegance, or something that is refined and polished. Since these stars relate to education and scholarship, they can help a student do better in school, and can help a person pass an exam. This includes big exams, such as the bar exam for lawyers, and other kinds of licensing or board exams. Someone who is very talented is likely to become well-known in their field or in their community. They may even become famous. Therefore, these stars also represent someone with a good name or reputation. Because these stars represent a refined elegant person who has talent in the arts, there is also some feeling of peach blossom. In real life, poets and musicians have ‘groupies’ because many people are attracted to the creative type. But the peach blossom qi is secondary to the creativity. Wen Chang and Wen Qu Stars are used in many aspects of Chinese metaphysics. In feng shui, Wen Qu is associated with the 4 green flying star, and with xun trigram. In Zi Wei Dou Shu astrology, both Wen Chang and Wen Qu are important stars. These two stars are very similar to each other but also have some differences which will be discussed below. You will learn how to calculate and use these two stars of creativity.

Here is an old Chinese memorization poem for locating Wen Chang and Wen Qu:

《歌訣》 甲嵗亥巳曲與昌; 乙逢馬鼠煥文章。 丙戊申寅庚亥巳; 六丁雞兔貴非常。 壬遇虎猴癸兔酉; 辛宜子上馬名揚。

And here is a translation into English. Words in (parenthesis) are added to clarify.

Rhymed-Formula Song In a jia year, hai is Wen Qu and si is Wen Chang. Yi meets horse (Wen Chang) and rat (Wen Qu) for brilliant

literary works. Bing and wu are shen (Wen Chang) and yin (Wen Qu). Geng is

hai (Wen Chang) and si (Wen Qu). The six ding (and ji ) are rooster (Wen Chang) and rabbit (Wen

Qu), very valuable. Ren meets tiger (Wen Chang) and monkey (Wen Qu). Gui is

rabbit (Wen Chang) and you (Wen Qu). Xin is suitable for zi (Wen Chang), on horse (Wen Qu) your

name rises up. You can see, this is not a very beautiful poem, and is fairly useless in English. But we share it so that you understand a little about Chinese culture. In any case, the words in italics are the heavenly stem of a person’s birth year. The direction you want to use is the earthly branch, but sometimes it is expressed as the associated animal. It is bolded in above.

So this poem tells you how to locate Wen Chang and Wen Qu based on the birth year. In addition, it hints at its usage: ‘brilliant literary works’ and ‘your name rises up.’ Don’t worry. While this is the traditional way these stars are taught, we will now show you how to find them and use them in the modern way.

Wen Chang: The Literary Star Wen Chang is focused on reading, writing, and literary skills. Its specialty is the written word. Wen Chang can help a person study a subject or pass a big exam. In addition, it can help a person receive a promotion or get their name more well-known. While Wen Chang has some amount of peach blossom qi, if that is what you are looking for, you should use the peach blossom technique given later in this class. Here is how you fing the Wen Chang direction:

Geng 0 hai (pig) w NW Xin 1 zi (rat) a N Ren 2 yin (tiger) e NE Gui 3 mao (rabbit) g E Each year starts on February 4th (first day of spring).

Wen Chang and Wen Qu are found based on the birth year stem. Since there are ten stems, it is easy to know the stem of any year based on the last digit of the year. The first stem, Jia, is associated with any year in the Western (Gregorian) calendar that ends in 4, for example, 1924, 1934, 1944, 1954, 1964, etc. The rest of the stems follow in order. However, don’t forget that the first day of the year, for our purposes, is February 4th, which is called the first day of spring (立春 li chun) in the Chinese calendar. If someone was born between January 1st and February 3rd, inclusive, they must use the previous year. In the table above, the first two columns refer to the birth year of the person in question. The next two columns are the 15° direction for Wen Chang. The first of these two columns has the branch of that direction. The second column is the letter on Master Sang’s Luo Pan. You can refer to the luopan diagram in Appendix 1. The last column is the 45° direction. This is useful because it gives you the general area of the 15° direction. It is best to use the exact 15°, but if that is not possible, the whole 45° will still provide some results.

Wen Qu: The Star of the Arts As we said above, Wen Qu is associated with flying star 4 green and xun gua. It is focused on talents other than reading and literature, such as music, visual arts, calligraphy, acting, even magic, feng shui, astrology, martial arts, etc. Like Wen Chang, Wen Qu can help a person study a subject or pass a big exam. In addition, it can help a person receive a promotion or get their name more well-known. While Wen Qu has some amount of peach blossom qi, if that is what you are looking for, you should use the peach blossom technique given later in this class. Note that even though Wen Chang and Wen Qu each have their specialty, there is a lot of overlap. You can use them interchangeably if the best one is not available. For example, if you need the star for literary arts, you prefer Wen Chang. However, if you cannot use the Wen Chang direction, Wen Qu will still bring some benefit. How to Use Wen Chang and Wen Qu Once you have found the Wen Chang and Wen Qu directions, you can use them in various ways: Choose a house with this direction as the sitting. For example if your Wen Qu

direction is mao (g, East), a house that sits east will promote creativity and name. However, you still need to select a house with good feng shui and use the usual remedies.

The entrance that is in one of these directions will also bring creativity and name if it is used. However, if the door is never used, it will have no effect, so don’t pick it as the main entrance then only use the back door. In addition, the feng shui of this door needs to be beneficial: good combination of flying stars, good environment, etc.

The pillow direction, meaning the head of the bed points in this direction. It is important to have the head of the bed against a wall. If you need to move the bed away from the wall, then it is better not to use this direction.

The orientation (sitting direction) of the desk or work space, although this may not be as effective as the other methods.

It is best if you use the precise 15° direction, but you can use the whole 45° section if the specific 15° is not available.

To use personal directions, we look at the pie sections, not at the grid. To check the door or pillow direction, it is the direction they are facing, not the section of the grid.

Here, the door is in the g (mao, east) section of the pie, and the door is basically oriented in the g direction. If g (mao) is a person’s Wen Chang or Wen Qu direction, this is a good door.

But if the pillow or door is within the ray (pie section), it still has effect. Here is another house, oriented differently. The door in this house is also is located in the g (mao) section, but the door itself does not face g (mao). This still has some effect, but not as much as the previous example.

桃花 Tao Hua: Peach Blossom This is a method to bring peach blossom (romance). You can use the sitting, a door, or the pillow direction as described above. The sitting is particularly strong. In addition, you can use a vase with flowers in the peach blossom direction. The use of the vase will be explained below. The Peach Blossom day or direction is found by the earthly branch of the birth year, unlike Wen Chang and Wen Qu, which used the heavenly stem of the birth year. Find the birth year in the first column of the following table. Then make note of the other information in the same row.

Each year starts on February 4th (first day of spring). You can also find the birth year branch by the following calculation:

Take the year of birth (after February 4th). Year: 19xx. Take the last 2 digits. Add 1. Divide by 12. The remainder is the branch number.

This formula only works for 20th century dates. Example: 1988.

Last 2 digits: 88. Add 1: 89. Divide by 12: 7 with a remainder of 5. 5 is the branch number. The 5th branch is chen.

Therefore, a person born in 1988 is a chen, dragon person, and their peach blossom direction is you (s).

The Peach Blossom Calculation Method (for those who have studied stems and branches): The four directions (north, east, south, west) are associated with peach blossom qi. The four corners or the four earths are never a peach blossom direction or day. The four directions also define the Three Combinations relationship. For example, shen, zi, and chen are associated with water, because zi represents the north. Find the three combinations of the birth year in one of the four diagrams below. Choose the main direction (North/zi, East/mao, South/wu, or West/you) from it. The peach blossom direction is the main direction that comes before the main direction of the three combinations. The red line in the diagrams below connects the peach blossom direction with the direction that defines the three combinations relationship.

For example, look at the bottom left circle. Yin, wu, and xu are one group in the three combinations. They are defined by wu because wu belongs to one of the four main directions, south. Mao (east) is the main direction that comes before wu (south), so it is the peach blossom day or direction for anyone born in a yin (tiger), wu (horse) or xu (dog) year. For those who have studied Ziwei Doushu, the peach blossom calculation is the same as for star 58 Xian Chi 咸池, which is also a peach blossom star.

How to Use the Peach Blossom Direction Peach blossom refers to romance, wine, and the good life. It can get a lot of people into trouble, but if it is used properly, it can help bring romance to a lonely single person. Using this technique will bring suitors, but it does not promise that they will all be compatible or upright. You must use judgment in picking the right person. Using the peach blossom direction is stronger than a 1-4 combination for romance. Note that a 1-4 area will affect anyone who spends significant time there, but a peach blossom direction only affects a person born in the related year. As stated above, you can choose a house that is sitting in the peach blossom direction. The sitting direction will have particularly strong effects. This house will tend to always bring romance to the person. This may be good when they are single, but can bring a lot of problem to a married person. A door that is in the 15° direction, or a pillow oriented in the 15° direction will also have a peach blossom effect. (The way to determine your pillow or door direction is described above under Wen Chang and Wen Qu. Use the pie sections, not the grid.) Of course, with a bed or door, there are other feng shui considerations, so before you move your bed or use a different door, be sure that the xuankong star combinations are not harmful and that the environment is good. One of the benefits of using the pillow direction is that it can easily be changed once you have received the desired results. You can also use a vase with flowers in the peach blossom direction. Enhance your peach blossom qi by choosing the right color vase and flowers and placing them in the correct direction. Use color of the peach blossom direction’s element or of the element that enhances it. These colors are given in the table above.

More details on using the vase are explained here: In the table above, determine the peach blossom branch, based on the year of birth. If you have studied the stems and branches, place flowers on a day with the peach

blossom branch, following the directions below. It is best if the day is not a breaker, consumer, or sha. If you do not know the stems and branches, you can do it any time.

Place fresh flowers in a vase with water. The flowers must be fresh; they cannot be artificial.

The color of the flowers and the vase should be the color associated with the direction, or the color that produces that direction, according to the five elements.

Place the vase with flowers in the 15˚ direction from the center of the house or from the center of the bedroom. It must measured precisely, and not guessed. The flowers should not be placed in a bathroom, closet, garage, storage area, etc. They should be in an area that you use. It is best if the area has no feng shui problems. Placing the vase in the direction from the center of the house is more powerful than using that direction from the center of the bedroom.

The flowers must be replaced when they begin to wilt. The water must be kept fresh and clean. Otherwise, the romance easily wilts or becomes tainted.

People will be attracted to you, but there is no guarantee that they will be the right type of people. You must be selective in choosing who you become close to.

When you find someone you are satisfied with, remove the flowers. To stop peach blossom, add rocks and lots of earth element in the peach blossom direction; do not use water. You can even use rocks outside the house (according to the pie sections) in the peach blossom direction to stop it. And in fact, planting the right color flowers outside in the peach blossom direction will also enhance it, but a vase with water and flowers inside the house is stronger. If you know the stems and branches and day selection, you can use the peach blossom day, hour, month, or year to your advantage. Try to be out where you can meet someone during your peach blossom times. Example 1: a female born in a mao year needs to place the flowers in the zi direction (due north). If possible, she should do this on a zi day. She needs a blue or black vase and blue flowers (as there aren’t really any black flowers). Or she could have a white or metallic vase with white flowers, since these correspond to the metal element. Metal nourishes water, which is associated with her Peach Blossom qi. She can also mix and match between blue, black, white, and metallic for the flowers and the vase. When she checks for the 15˚ north section from the center of her house, she finds that it is the bathroom. So, she places the flowers in the due north of her bedroom. Example 2: A male born in a xu year. His Peach Blossom branch is mao. He must place his flowers due east (on a mao day, if possible). His flowers and vase should be green, blue-green, blue, and/or black.

Appendix 2: The Nine Flying Stars The Nine Flying Stars have a number of associations. These are important for a full understanding of the significance of these stars. In addition, the memorization poems often use the trigram name, the color, or the associated star when referring to the flying stars, so we need to know these to decode the old poems.
