Taking a side…

• There are two different views about why the USA moved away from world politics.

The Traditional View: America did not want to be involved with Europe.

The Modern View: Woodrow Wilson was to blame for refusing to compromise on his Fourteen Points.

Isolationism

• America saw itself as part of the ‘New World’ not the corrupt ‘Old World’. The country was full of immigrants who wanted to leave the old world. Yet these people still had ties to their mother countries. For example, New York was full of German and Irish immigrants. Both groups disliked the British.

1919. It is about the direction that America should take with foreign policy.

• The cartoonist is trying to convince

people that the best course for America to take is the “old channel” of isolationism. He argues if America takes the new course and gets involved in “foreign” entanglements and treaties with other nations, it will cause America to sink as a nation. He suggests isolationism is the best, and safer route.
