The UK’s favourite cuisine was once again celebrated at the ninth, annual British Curry Awards on Monday 25th

The event was organised by one of the UK curry industry’s leading !gures, Enam Ali MBE, and was hosted by TV personality, Chris Tarrant. This year's ceremony once again welcomed a who’s who guest list of 100’s of leading restaurateurs, celebrities, politicians, dignitaries, business leaders and in"uencers. Among them were Prime Minister David Cameron; celebrity chefs, James Martin, Ed Bains, Anjum Anand and John Gregory-Smith; radio broadcaster James Whale; ITV newsreader Charlene White; TV personalities Ulrika Jonsson, Melinda Messenger and Lizzie Cundy; and politicians Chris Grayling MP, Keith Vaz MP. Speaking at the event, David Cameron said, “The curry industry has been contributing, achieving and rising and that is the spirit we need more than ever in this country today. From the bottom of my heart, let me say thank you for everything you give to our country. Thank you for the tremendous kindness that you have shown me this evening, I wish this Great British industry every possible success in the years to come.”

Lifestyle FAMILIES

A DRIVE to encourage people to adopt children in care is getting underway in Liverpool.Using the slogan ‘Adopt a future – together we can make a di!erence’ the new recruitment campaign aims to "nd new homes for young people in Liverpool who are waiting for new families.Adopting a child could get his or her life for the better forever, and could be the best decision you could ever make. Currently, the City council need to "nd adopters for 37 children, some of them are siblings.Councillor Jane Corbett, Cabinet member for children’s services said, “It is the single most important thing that will ever happen to a young person and it completely transforms their life chances. And for the adopter, there truly is nothing more rewarding or ful"lling. The process of becoming an adopter is extremely thorough, but the council are making is a pain free as possible and 19 out of 20 are approved with 98% of our placements a long-term success. People looking to adopt must be:

Over 21 and mature enough to meet the demands of parenthood. In reasonably good health and "t and well enough to care for children into adulthood.Able to o!er a secure home with a spare room for one or more children.Have the time and ability to parent an adopted child. Can be either single, married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting. We do not discriminate on the grounds of class, race, culture, sexual orientation or disability.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSHome visits and assessmentsIf you are in a position to adopt via our agency and still keen to proceed, a social worker will visit you at home to go through further details. Following this visit if you want to proceed and we believe you should progress to the next stage we will then invite you to a series of preparation groups, where we can "nd out more about you and you will learn skills to help parent adopted children.

Meeting a childOnce a link has been proposed and agreed, you will be introduced to the child and get to know each other over a period of time. The child will move in with you and you will have continued support from the social worker during the settling in period.

Becoming the child’s legal parentsYour application is submitted to the court at least 10 weeks after the child is placed with you. If the adoption order is granted, this ends the child’s legal relationship with their birth family and makes you their legal parents.

SupportLiverpool’s Adoption Service will continue to support you for as long as is necessary, and you will be entitled to support throughout the child’s life.

To talk to someone about adoption, call 0151 233 3700 or log on to www.liverpool.gov.uk/adoption

This enchanting journey begins at St John’s Lane entrance where visitors board a real Santa Express Train. Once on board passengers will be whisked through St Georges Hall as Christmas comes alive before their very eyes, travelling through Santa’s Workshop and an authentic Winter Wonderland before excited children (and adults too) meet Father Christmas in his Grotto. Each child will receive an early Christmas present and actors and performers will bring a Dickensian Christmas scene to life, as they entertain and spread festive magic throughout this nostalgic experience.

RESIDENTS in Liverpool are being urged to help decide where the council should prioritise its spending in the face of huge cuts - £156 million to be precise. Everybody has an opinion on when and where the council should spend its money. Well, now residents can have a go at setting the budget themselves. A Budget Simulator has been launched on the council’s website – www.liverpool.gov.uk/budget – for residents to consider where e!ciencies might be made, spending should fall and income be generated to balance the books for 2014-15. Using a series of sliders, you can opt to prioritise di"erent services including children’s and adult’s services, roads and refuse, housing and community services and environment and regeneration. The simulator then outlines some of the consequences of the actions. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “We are a much leaner, smaller and e!cient council than we were, and have already had to make signi#cant cuts to services and to the number of people we employ. “We continue to face some stark and di!cult choices and it is vital that people understand the gravity of the situation. There is no option other than to deal with the situation head on and make the decisions in the fairest way possible. That is why I want people to get actively involved in telling us what they believe is most important and the services they believe should be protected. “I am anxious that residents, customers and other interested parties get a chance to tell us what their priorities are.”

Lifestyle community

HAVE A GO AT SETTING THE COUNCIL BUDGET “It is clear that we won’t be able to satisfy everyone due to the vast range of ways in which the council touches people’s lives, but it will at least give us a sense of what our citizens think. “Their selection and comments give us valuable feedback on what people see as the priorities for spending over the next year. “This is just part of our consultation e"orts over the coming months with service users, partners and other stakeholders as we start an enormously important conversation with the city about how to overcome the challenges together.” The latest #nancial position shows the city council will have to save £45 million in 2014/15, £63 million in 2015/16 and £48 million in 2016/17. People can also #nd out more about the budget at www.liverpool.gov.uk/budget or email [email protected] The Budget Simulator will be available until mid-January.

Everybody seems to be talking about Eminem’s new album, Marshall Mathers LP 2, which was released on 5th November through Interscope Records. Upon release the rave reviews from both fans a critics alike hit twitter, it seems that Mr Mathers has scored once again and produced his 7th consecutive No1 album. At !rst I was dubious, we have waited a few years for this, and I felt that he had very much gone o" the boil, his music was showing considerable “wear” as he ventured down the well-worn musical path of insipid juvenile commercialism. As a whole Marshall Mathers LP 2, is cleanly produced with lots of catchy hooks with crudely comical, cynical lyricism which he spits at a rapid speed, that you will want to commit to memory, or at least try to anyway. He has jumped on the bandwagon somewhat and produced a few tracks featuring other artists, but he can be forgiven as every one of these tracks are excellent and he is always the lead musician. For me, the best track is “Rhyme or Reason” which has used The Zombies’ “Time of Season,” as a sample. In this, his target for venom is his Dad. He examines the side-e"ects to the disappearance of his father, altering his tone and channeling Yoda, in a Yoda voice, no less. It’s comical, direct and mildly disturbing – typical Mr Mathers. “Asshole” featuring Skylar Grey - is another triumph – I challenge anyone to sing along with this lyrical speed-fest. But you can guarantee that the chorus will be chanted by millions in pubs across the land everytime it is played. Headlights – featuring Nate Ruess. In this he cleanses his conscience. Finally he has forgiven his mom, his seemingly endless rage against her has ended, and

Lifestyle music

spends the whole track basically saying we all have our faults. Concluding with an apology to the woman who brought him into this world. This is an epic of an album, 21 tracks in total, which is typical of a hip hop album. Yes it is full of f-bombs and the like so no it can’t be used as background music to a dinner party and you de!antly can’t play in front your Nan, but what of the great albums can’t you do that with anyway? So is it any good? In short, yes. In fact I’ll go further and suggest that this is the best album of the year. A heady accolade I know, and not one I bestow lightly, but trust me in this, for once the jaded and often mistrusted music industry has delivered exactly as promised, pure gold – a perfect continuation to one of Eminem’s greatest works. Welcome back, Slim.Marshall Mathers LP 2 is available to download now on itunes £11.99.

When Aladdin is sent to retrieve a magical lamp for the evil Dark Lord his fortunes change as the powerful Genie he commands grants him a Princess and a Palace. But when the Dark Lord "nds out and takes his revenge Aladdin calls on his friends and "nds himself on a mystery tour of the Orient to try and win back his bride.

I have to say, “Clubland” has changed a lot in the last years, not that long back Boxing night was THE biggest night of the year, but it seems that only the big events do well nowadays and town is pretty quiet on that night. As for New Year’s Eve, well it seems that most are opting for the house party with a load of tunes and a good tipple with friends.

One thing that has rocked “Clubland” recently is the re-opening of the State nightclub on Dale St for 2 last nights before it becomes a Casino. It’s opening with all the original djs and some live pa’s on Boxing night and New Year’s Eve , Boxing night sold out within 2 hours of tickets being released, and people were queuing from 6am at 3B Records for them. I’ve never known anything like it in “Clubland” for 20 years! I, of course will be there on the decks for 2 nights of the most amazing Old skool anthems - for more info hit Facebook.com/statelpool and if you do fancy it then you will have to be quick as there’s only a limited amount of New Year’s Eve tickets left, good luck!

Can we also say happy 21st Birthday to Cream? They had two amazing parties to celebrate with an incredible selection of djs from Like Mike n Dimitri Vegas to Chuckie / John Kelly n Paul Oakenfold - Cream is a worldwide brand and we should be proud that its home is in Liverpool. Well done to them.

Finally I hope you all have a boss Christmas and a lovely New year - Don’t forget to tune into my show on Radio City 96.7 every Friday night from 10pm and Sat nights from 9pm for all the hottest new house anthems plus all the best Old skool memories .

Lady Gaga in 2013, was named by Time Magazine as the second most in!uential person of the decade. She has over 2.5 billion combined views of all her videos online, she is one of the biggest living forces in social media with over 60 million likes on Facebook and over 40 million followers on Twitter. She is also a global activist and philanthropist, having been an outspoken supporter of many important issues including LGBT rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, body image issues, and youth empowerment. It’s rather di"cult not to like this wonderfully weird, incredibly talented lass. So it’s no wonder that I like so many others have grabbed at her latest album “Artpop” with very eager hands, because, really what can she come up with next? Love her or hate her, she is never a dull moment and always a great topic of conversation, and always expect the unexpected. Artpop, for Gaga fans does not disappoint, it’s a very busy bizzare album of electric

disco. There is a pile-up of celebrity names in the production credits including Zedd, Madeon, David Guetta, Infected Mushroom and Will.i.am, which is perhaps why the album is such a mix of sounds and emotions. Yes it’s all electric disco but it’s like a 10p mix, all sugary sweets but all very di#erent both in taste and style. Like the artist herself no track is subtle. But some tracks are better than others, and the cynical side of me suspects that the best tracks on the album, which really do stand out, were designed to be released as singles and the others, although good, are just $llers for the album. The best tracks are probably the ones you have already heard. “Do What U Want,” is a spectacularly growly and groovy R. Kelly duet, and “Gypsy,” is a homage to the 80’s with its anthem style and sound. Here she admits that her love

of performing and love of love often clash. “I don’t want to be alone

forever, but I love gypsy life,” she sings with happy

abandon and is my favourite track, it is e#ortless in style and sure to be a major hit. So is it worth the £7.99 iTunes price tag? Yes, very much so. Admittedly, not every track will set the world on $re, but as a whole, the album is good. It takes a few

listens, but after a while you come to appreciate the bizarre musical electric pop talents of Lady Gaga.

exclusive interview

20 years anniversary, with a new album being released later this month, how are the preparations going?Great thanks, we’ve not stopped all year. I can’t wait, it will be good. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. We are so busy right now, doing promotional stu! for our album and tour on tv and radio. On top of this we’re rehearsing for the tour, which is all very exciting but tiring. What can we expect from the 20th Anniversary tour?Well, all our hits that’s for sure, our fans wouldn’t want us to leave those out. But we have our new album too, so it’s going to be a good mix of both old and new songs. What made you decide to get back together again? We were given the opportunity to do a fresh album rather than a greatest hits album. This is good for us as artists and our fans get new material to listen to. We are very excited by this, in some ways it’s like the beginning for us all over again, but we are doing it now with older wiser heads on our shoulders and we all have families now too, so we’re not as crazy, but it’s all good fun and that’s what we want, for ourselves and our fans.

November 1993: a bunch of young lads from the North side of Dublin would infamously appear on Ireland’s big-gest TV show ‘The Late Late Show’ and the rest, as they say...is history. Twenty one singles, seven albums, twenty !ve million record sales later, Boyzone are back, with a new album BZ20 – re-leased November 25th and their 20th Anniversary Tour. We had a chat with Mikey Graham…

You have an army of fans, a!er 20 years how does it feel to still hold such loyalty? It feels great we are very honoured and we are very proud of our fans. They grew up with us, and many have families of their own now like we do. But we don’t take them for granted. We often ask ourselves the same question, it’s just quite amazing that we are still here, I believe that fate and hard work has kept us here and so popular.Does this album and tour mark the permanent return of Boyzone?Yes de"nitely, we are really thrilled to be doing this, we are with a new label and have plans to be around for as long as the fans want us to be.You’re coming to the Echo Arena on 8th December, are you looking forward to it? Have you performed here before?Yes, we love visiting Liverpool and performing there. We have felt at home in Liverpool because of that the character of the people, many people are of Irish decent, but it’s more than that. I have always found Liverpool people to be open and honest about themselves with others. They have a great sense of humour, always ready for a laugh and a good time, we have always had a great time there, I can’t wait.

Liverpool, outside of London, has the best and most proli!c amount of museums, but none up to now have been created to solely celebrate the city’s fantastic footballing history. It’s been a long time coming, but !nally Liverpool Football Club has opened its own museum to tell the story of its illustrious past and present. Hardly a weekend goes by without tourists coming in from all over Europe via Easy Jet and cruise ships, to sample our great city but also to experience our football heritage too. This surely has to be another trump for our ever growing tourist industry. Called “The Liverpool FC Story”, the new interactive museum was o"cially opened at the end of October, and promises to be a great and successful tourist attraction. Brendan Rodgers joined the title-winning Ladies team, Club legends and VIPs for a tour of the interactive space. The state of the art technology brings Liverpool FC’s 120 years of football to life. Featuring unique and never seen before displays that combine the history of LFC alongside its modern day stars, fans can explore football - past and present - through amazing exhibitions, looking at the game from every angle, telling the stories that matter. Manager Brendan Rodgers, who is featured within the new museum, unveiled a plaque to mark the opening and said, “It’s an honour to be involved in the opening of the new museum and to be featured within the manager’s section. “This Club has an incredible history and to

BRENDAN RODGERS OPENS THE LFC STORY

see it all housed in one place is brilliant. Fans from across the world can enjoy the real history of their Club in a new and exciting interactive way.” By visiting the museum you can take a tour through the Hall of Fame and see all 5 European Trophies, plus the other mountain of silverware that has been won over the years. There is also a tribute to Hillsborough and Heysel with a chance to pay respects to those that passed away during the two tragedies. Museum Curator Stephen Done says, “The new LFC museum gives a unique insight into the Club’s history, ranging from its very beginning to the modern day era. “The state of the art interactive displays show o# the LFC story in the best possible way and the reaction from visitors so far has been fantastic.” Visitors can also visit the Boot Room Sports Cafe located next to the Museum, to see the amazing Bill Shankly Exhibition featuring some never before seen memorabilia.

Hello Lifestyle Readers! As winter approaches, I am continuing to keep myself busy right up until the festive season begins. I have had an enjoyable month that has seen me continue various projects and even escape to warmer climates for a few days.

Earlier this month I jetted o! to Las Vegas to enjoy the 20th anniversary of UFC at the MGM Grand Arena. As a big UFC fan, it was a fantastic opportunity for me to see the biggest names in action. For those who have never seen the sport before, UFC is a combination of mixed martial arts as "ghters use a combination of techniques to defeat their opponents. What a special event it was with an unbelievable atmosphere! If you would like to see some picture of me with some of the "ghters, make sure to check out my Facebook page or follow me on Twitter @craigbigbro1.

Closer to home, I attended this year’s National Painting and Decorating Show in Coventry which was the biggest in it 19-year history. Featuring exhibitors, products and demonstrations, it is the country’s premier event for a host of professional painters and decorators. I was there on behalf of paint-spraying specialists Wagner and gave some demonstrations of their exceptional products. Let me tell you the crowds were impressed with what they saw, and the ease and e#ciency of their products is second-to-none!

I have also enjoyed "lming more episodes of ’60 Minute Makeover’, which is being hosted by Peter Andre this year. The show has always been a "rm favourite of mine and though the pressure is intense, the pay o! at the end is always fantastic.

It’s been a good month for me with plenty of variety as always. I’ll continue to keep you updated on all my latest news right here. Until next time…

All the best,

Craig Phillips

Spray painting a wall

Craig Phillip’s DIY...

TOOLS/MATERIALS Paint Spraying machinePaint

Old external brick walling can often look dull and can also devalue your home if you are tying to sell or rent it out. Simply applying a couple of coats of paint can add a world of di!erence! If you have a large area to paint I’d recommend doing this with a power paint sprayer, this will save both time and money.

Clean your wall from dust and rebury, using a hard/soft yard brush.

Load your spraying machine up with paint, I’d always recommend your "rst coat of paint to bare brickwork or plaster work to be watered down, add about 20% water to "ne the paint out. This is because the bare walling has not been sealed will be very porous. The thinner the paint the more it will absorb into the surface which helps with a longer lasting "nish.

Hold your sprayer about 8 to 12 inches from the wall. Move it in left to right motions, trying not to get runs in your paint work, only try to do a small area at a time until you develop momentum.

Once you have covered your area leave to dry for up to 12 hours before applying a second coat, this time the paint will not require watering down.

Always clean your sprayer straight after use with warm soapy water, rinse and leave to dry ready to use again and again.

Can you stay o! the booze for 31 days?Your mission; to avoid that cheeky after work pint, that glass of wine on the sofa, or that big boozy night out, for the whole month of January.

Launched 18th November, Dry January, run by the Public Health team at Liverpool City Council, aims to get us to think about our alcohol intake in the run up to the festive period, and to commit to reducing permanently from January 2014.

The councils message is that fewer units usually means more happy hours both in the context of better physical health as it will reduce their calorie intake, and improving their mental health and wellbeing

Using the slogan ‘Fewer Units, More Happy Hours’, the campaign wants as many people as possible to pledge to cut their drinking through a new website – www.fewerunits.co.uk

The campaign was launched at the alcohol-free Brink Bar on Parr Street.

Deputy Mayor, Cabinet member for adult social care and health, Councillor Roz Gladden, said: “We have already had success in reducing the number of hospital admissions caused by drinking too much, but we have to do more.

“This is a vital step towards reducing the risk of future alcohol related health problems which can have a negative impact on the lives of people and those around them, as well as costing the NHS a lot of money.” “

Which drinking group are you in?Chardonnay Socialites: Typically middle aged men and women with families who drink to socialise. They tend to have a glass

CULTURE Lifestyle

of wine with a meal during the week and more at the weekends with friends. Whilst they often spot the short term e!ects of their consumption such as weight gain, they think they are in control of their units and don’t realise how much they actually drink

Ritual Relaxers: Typically single and of all ages. They include single parents and those who work unsociable hours. They tend to drink on their own to relax at the end of the day as a reward.

Balanced Bingers: Typically younger people with no children who drink heavily socially at the weekends. They are likely to drink in clubs and pubs one or two nights a week and tend to mix their drinks. They are aware that they drink a lot on these nights but they feel they ‘balance’ it out by not drinking during the week and by having an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

Drinkers in Denial: Typically older males who drink socially at the pub with friends and when watching the match and some also at home. They tend to drink regularly due to their lifestyles, eg: retired with a lot of free time and they have a strong preference for pints and spirits. They understand the health consequences but they have enjoyed drinking for a long time and are unwilling to change.
