Third Sunday of Easter "Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and
go out and find pasture." Jesus' analogy about the pasture suggests the ideas of both provision and protection. In this grassy field, the
sheep find their sustenance. The pasture is also the safe zone where the Shepherd can keep tabs on his flock. When Jesus speaks of himself as "the gate for the sheep" he is telling us that through our belief in him, we too will find provision and protection. First: provision. Jesus wants to provide for his people. He "came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly." The imagery here is of plenty, not just "enough." Today's psalm says, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want...You spread the table
before me...my cup overflows." This generous Shepherd provides not only our daily bread, but also our spiritual needs. "He
refreshes my soul," the psalm tells us. When we are weary from the cares of life, the struggles of daily survival, and the burden of our sins, Jesus gives us "repose" in the "verdant pastures" of his
love. Today's epistle follows the theme: "You had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and
guardian of your souls." This brings us to the second point: protection. Jesus guards us, ensuring our safety. Again, Psalm 23 declares, "Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side." Jesus wants to comfort us when we are frightened by trials or
threatened by temptations. He "calls his own sheep by name and leads them out." Out of harm's way. We only must be sure we know him well enough to "recognize his voice" when he calls.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers out there. Moms, grandmoms, great-grandmoms: you are all in my heart, thoughts, and prayers today! Moms-to-be, especially those first time moms-to-be, I pray that your pregnancy continues without complication and that you will be able to welcome that new life into the world safe and sound. It has always made me wonder about why we only have Mother’s Day once a year. (Father’s Day, for that matter, as well.) After all, moms are not just moms once a year. They do not do all the “motherly things” just once a year. Theirs is an unending job. Done well, they barely receive recognition. Done poorly, and everyone is on their backs. If a child is having a cranky day, look out mom. If dad’s day is not going so well, look out mom. I hope you know that whether we say it or not, we realize that we would not be here without you and that we love you very much for bringing us into the world. I know that not all moms have the best relationship with their children. If you are one of them, I pray for peace for you and yours on this day. Hang in there and keep doing the best that you can do. After all, that is all that God expects of any of His children. You husbands and children, don't forget to do something special for mom today. It does not have to be big enough to make the ten o’clock news. It should be big enough, however, to let her know how much you care about her. Again, Happy Mother's Day!

ROME-ASSISI-FLORENCE PILGRIMAGE Tomorrow, fifty-six people, mostly from the parish or the diocese, will be leaving for a pilgrimage to Rome, Assisi, and Florence. We depart in the evening to Frankfort, Germany and then transfer planes to go to Rome. Our return on May 21st will begin in Milan and go to Frankfort where we will change planes for our flight back to Chicago. As always, I ask that you keep all of us in your prayers that we have safe flights and an enjoyable and prayerful pilgrimage experience. I will be keeping all of you in my prayers at our daily Masses. Thank you to Fr. Ben, the Carmelite Fathers, and Fr. Ted Mauch for providing coverage for me while I am gone with the pilgrims.

Please join our group Pro-Life Rosary, in honor of Mary, the Blessed Mother, next Sunday after the Noon Mass

Father’s Day Cards Now Available Purchase cards in the Parish Office for $3 per card. You may list favorite parent, grandparent or friend,
etc., living or deceased, for our parish bulletin on the corresponding day.
To be printed in the bulletin, Father’s Day Cards must be purchased no later than Friday, June 6th.
You Did It for Me Cristina and her family can now stay dry during the rainy
season. They have a new roof. Christina’s home was badly damaged when Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines. She and
her son have worked hard to rebuild their home, using a sturdy tarp roof provided by Catholic Relief Services. CRS quickly
distributed more than 40,000 specially-designed tarps to Haiyan survivors like Christina.

Garden Club Tryouts Spring training tryouts will begin for new members.
The Garden Club mission is improving and maintaining the parish grounds. To perform its mission it
needs new members, male or female, between the ages of 21 and 99.
New recruits must be capable of walking, talking and stalking (weeds that is) and
distinguishing between plant life that should be nourished or eradicated.
Bending over and having a digestive system capable of consuming coffee and doughnuts is an asset, but not an absolute requirement.
If you believe you can measure up to these standards and have a burning desire to become a participant in this
elite group, present yourself on any Wednesday or Friday morning at The Barn (next to the parish
rectory) at 9:00 a.m. We disband at noon. Attendance records are not kept and fines are not levied for being absent or having
differences of opinion with others in the group. Seize the moment, challenge yourself, fulfill one of your lifelong
dreams, give your dormant psyche a spring tonic! Join the Garden Club!

STM Pastoral Council Nomination Ballot
Would you consider becoming a member or the St. Thomas More Pastoral Council?
The Pastoral Council members are parishioners who: • Are willing to participate in prayer and spiritual formation
• Are willing to listen to others and new ideas • Understand and accept the mission of our parish
• Are willing to work as team members • Are willing to make a commitment of time and talent to the
Council, the Parish and the Church. This is a 3-year commitment.
A series of three evenings of prayer, education and faith sharing constitute STM’s Discernment Process.
The Discernment Sessions give the candidates an opportunity to learn more about the Pastoral Council. These sessions will be held on the following Tuesdays:
May 27, June 3 and June 10. On the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, Sunday, June 15th,
New Council members will be chosen at the 10:00 a.m. Mass.
Nominees must be a practicing Roman Catholic, a registered member of St. Thomas More Parish, and be at least 18 years of age. The nominees cannot be a full-time employee of the parish or school. Nominees will be contacted to verify their

According to Pope Benedict XVI, “the main goal of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to put on their knees, everyone in the Church to implore the Lord of
the harvest for the gift of laborers for His harvest”.
This is obedience to the command of Jesus who said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers
are few. Pray therefore”. The Apostle of Prayer for Vocations,

My Two Cents Thoughts on Living Stewardship
Fourth Sunday of Easter A shepherd’s duties demand much more than holding a staff and calmly watching the flock. He must feed them, shelter them and provide safety for them. In return the sheep provides meat, wool and milk. The reference to
sheep is found throughout the Scriptures culminating in the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd, who cares about his
flock and is the Lamb sacrificed for our sins. Consider these two points:
How much better would we be as Jesus’ “little flock” if we stuck together and followed the Good Shepherd, and how much stronger would our clergy shepherds be if we
showed our support for their efforts and help them to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in the flock that they guide?

Wounded Healers Our spring schedule has begun with the next meeting slated for
Wednesday, May 14th. Wounded Healers, a non-denominational grief support group,
holds separate groups for those dealing with the loss of a spouse, parent, sibling or friend, child or grandchild, with additional groups for those dealing with the loss of a friend or family
member from suicide (separate teen group). All sessions are held on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at St. James the Less in

Free Band Concert & Spaghetti Dinner
Bishop Noll Institute is holding a FREE Band Concert at the school, 1519 Hoffman Street in Hammond, Sunday, May 18th at
6:30 p.m. A Spaghetti Dinner will precede the concert from 3:30 –5:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria for only $7/per person
