Greetings Amelia Island Daughters, This year I am turning Christmas upside- down. I am tired of the commercialism that has taken over our society. It has moved us away from the true reason that we celebrate this holiday. Here, at the end of this year, I am promoting the first two objects in the DAR motto: God and Home. Love of family, love of friends, thanking God for all, is my goal for this season. Our eternity began at the manger. And you, my Sister Daughters, are my special blessing. I hope you be able to join in our Amelia Island DAR Holiday Celebration Sunday, December 9th from 6 to 8 at the home of Jane Philips, 1641 Philips Manor Road. Bring an hors d’oeuvres, a desert or a bottle of wine to share. HODARS and significant others are welcome. RSVP to Amy Schnell at 556-3486 or [email protected] . For our Fun-Raising at the party, we will have Carolyne’s Pick a Prize to support The Florida Project of rebuilding the taxi ramp at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. (Don’t ever forget: we need to take care of our magnificent buildings!) If you would like to participate, your tax deductible check can be sent to AIDAR, PO Box 16664, Fernandina Beach, FL 32035. Your donation can go towards a drawing for baskets at the holiday celebration. You do not need to be present to win a basket. $50.00 gives you 10 voices and $100.00 gives you 20 voices. Send your basket choices with your check if you won’t be at the party. And, not to worry, tickets will be on hand at the party! Check out the exciting prizes Carolyne has collected... American HeritageRules for entering Fiber Art categories have

changed since last year. Please read these changes on the NSDAR Member’s Website under American Heritage Committee. Mainly, commercially made patterns or purchased kits containing the pattern, thread and cloth are not advised to be entered, as they will be receiving the fewer points toward placing in the competition compared to projects made with original patterns, materials, and fabrics. Also, please include this information in detail in the required short essay that accompanies your entry form. The chapter already has a short story, a fiber art project, metal craft, and a poem entered in this year’s competitions. Please do think about entering one of the many categories offered.

Literacy PromotionAs you purchase holidays gifts for family and

friends, please consider a book to promote the joy of reading. Read holiday stories and poems to young children such as the poem, The Before Christmas by Clement Clark Moore, books as How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss, The Nutcracker by Stephanie Spinner, Chanukah Lights by Michael Rosen, or the Birth of Jesus from the Bible.

Promoting literacy doesn’t necessary mean that you have to be a professional teacher or donate dozens of books to a library. Literacy is promoted by reading one word at a time, turning one page at time, and helping one person at a time.
