APPAREL DESIGN

MERCHANDISING

This option provides students with a global understanding of the textile and apparel industry. Apparel Design encompasses all aspects of apparel product development. Courses include illustration, computer-aided design, pattern making, draping, and apparel product construction.

This option offers students the opportunity to learn all aspects of the global apparel industry from fiber selection to the final product. Courses teach students the processes involved in marketing, planning, buying, and selling (e-commerce) of merchandise in either retail or manufacturing organizations.

Washington has one of the largest apparel

industries in the US and has positioned itself as a

global leader in fashion and design. The state

possesses a rich history in textiles and apparel,

with particular strength in the outdoor clothing

and sportswear market.

WSU’s Apparel, Merchandising, Design and

Textiles (AMDT) department offers the largest

and most comprehensive four-year program in the

state of Washington with two academic options—

apparel design and merchandising.

The AMDT experience is unique. Each AMDT student is provided hands-on learning in the classroom and opportunities to build connections and experience beyond it. Networking with alumni, industry partners, and fellow students is a great way to bolster learning and participate in industry-based activities. The AMDT student organization sponsors special events such as the Mom’s Weekend Fashion Show, design and merchandising competitions and exhibitions, and supports trips, workshops, and guest speakers.
