Technology Applications
AMDRO™ technology is a proprietary treatment process for desalination of acidic wastewater with high concentrations of metals and calcium salts. The AMDRO™ process produces high-quality water with low pretreatment costs. Developed by Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, AMDRO™ is a reverse osmosis (RO) technology operated in double-pass mode. By combining the proprietary ACTIFLO® high-rate clarification process with filtration, reverse osmosis and ion exchange, this unique technology generates high-quality effluent with minimumpretreatment requirements.

The AMDRO™ technology consists of multiple treatment processes, involving clarification, media filtration, reverse osmosis and ion exchange for polishing. The pretreatment processes ahead of the RO are designed to reduce the particulates and retain the scale-forming contaminants such as metals and calcium salts in solution, preventing scaling of the membranes upon concentration. The RO process is operated in double-pass mode with the first pass operated under acidic conditions, which effectively controls scaling due to metals and calcium salts, and the second pass at neutral pH conditions for further removal of dissolved inorganic compounds.
For applications with high metal concentrations, the feed water is acidified to retain the metals in soluble form throughout the downstream treatment processes. The acidified water passes through a solids-liquid separation step using ACTIFLO® high-rate clarification technology. This process utilizes microsand as a seed for floc formation. The microsand provides high surface area to promote flocculation and acts as a ballast to rapidly settle the floc, resulting in high overflow rates, short retention times and a smaller footprint than conventional clarification systems.A unique coagulation process designed for acidic conditions is used in the ACTIFLO® to enhance the solids-liquid separation efficiency.
The water from the ACTIFLO® process is then further treated with media filtration to reduce the particulates in the feed water to lower concentrations without pH correction. The pretreated water is then pressurized through a double-pass RO system to reduce the total dissolved solids present in the feed water.
In applications requiring high-purity water such as boiler feed, the permeate from the double-pass RO system is further polished with mixed bed ion exchange demineralization to generate high-purity water with a low dissolved solids concentration.
