Most dealers will appreciate the "steady-as-she-goes" approach following a season that has seen Harley-Davidson being positively hyperactive in mid-cycle new model terms. However, many will also worry whether the publicity spikes generated by the strategy will have neutralized the crescendo of consumer profile that has usually been associated with the annual new-model announcement (see Comment on page four). At a time when the battleground for the fringes and the new "minority" customer bases of the v-twin market is hotter than ever (especially given the Victory/Indian pincer movement that Polaris is deploying), and with those fringes beginning to overshadow what Harley themselves reference as the/their "core" market, eight new paint options, upgraded audio for the top end tourers and overdue brakes improvements for the Softails may prove to be a thin offering. Having successfully managed to stretch the 2014 initiatives a lot further than would have been the case without the "Rushmore" branding, introduced the Street 500 and 750 models in the Fall, pounced on a mid-term news opportunity by separating out the Project LiveWire announcement, the two new but previously trailed Road Glides apart, the only genuinely fresh new models in Harley's primary 2015 new model year announcement have been the Freewheeler Trike, the two low seat height Electra Glides, and the two new limited production CVO packages. Harley President and Chief Operating Officer Matt Levatich speaks of how the company is "at one with our riders around the world", and reiterates the management's mantra that "everything we do is about delivering what they expect", but for once the new model announcement did not meet investor expectations, failing to excite those who look to Harley for dividends, with the share price barely registering a twitch when the details of the 2015 offerings were unveiled. Contrary to the hype surrounding the Softail brakes changes, and to the remarks ascribed to Senior VP Operations Michelle Kumbier about the lowered Electra glides, the general reaction appears to be surprise that such initiatives were not already in play, rather than excitement that they now are. While Harley's share price remains stubbornly static and down from its 52 week high, rumors about their vulnerability to take over will remain persistent, with some analysts already suggesting that the company needs to look outside its present box and acquire additional balance sheet action before it itself is acquired. Most dealers will appreciate the"steady-as-she-goes" approachfollowing a season that has seenHarley-Davidson being positivelyhyperactive in mid-cycle new model terms.

However, many will also worrywhether the publicity spikes generatedby the strategy will have neutralized thecrescendo of consumer profile that hasusually been associated with theannual new-model announcement (seeComment on page four).

At a time when the battleground forthe fringes and the new "minority"customer bases of the v-twin market ishotter than ever (especially given theVictory/Indian pincer movement thatPolaris is deploying), and with thosefringes beginning to overshadow what

HAS Harley's strategy of "drip-launching" new modelsbackfired on them? That is the question being asked in some quarters followingthe 2015 new model announcement (see cover story). The

proposition being that the many publicity opportunities it has soughtto exploit have watered down the impact it can have with its primarypublicity opportunity - its annual new model launch. However, there is another question that could be asked, one that I for one would

certainly think needs to be asked. That is whether the breadth of product andplatform that Harley is now fielding can be carried by a brand that has traditionallyhad quite specific "core" values for a quite specific "core" audience? When Keith Wandell became the first 'outsider' to head

up the Motor Company at the time of its perilous plunge overthe cliff of market collapse, his default knee-jerk was tojettison all that was not "core" (Buell, MV Agusta), strip thebalance sheet back down to 'essentials', and re-focus thecompany on its traditional customer base and core brandvalues. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that as a default

knee-jerk response at the time, despite the collateraldamage. However, since then, and certainly once the bottom of the

U-curve had been safely navigated, it could be argued that the company has doneeverything but concentrate on its traditional customer. Now don't get me wrong. Personally I think that the company has done the right

thing to search out new customers and find new niches where it can surf its brandvalues into hitherto untapped wallet books and purses, but in endeavouring to findsomething to sell to anyone who'll buy, has the company stored up long-termtrouble for itself by not doing so in parallel to exploiting additional PTW (PoweredTwo Wheeler) revenue opportunities that its own brand can't exploit?Indeed is it at risk of trying to now take its brand into areas where its brand

simply isn't "fit for purpose"?

Leaving aside that the present strategy of "breadth" militates directly againstthe short-termism of the Buell and MV Agusta decisions, short of chocolate-by-the-checkout and beer-by-the-diapers, Harley's dealers need all possible

hot buttons to be pushed to maintain footfall. That said though, some dealers are voicing concern (see the AMD Baird quarterly

reports published so far this year) that the current marketing strategy leaves someof them vulnerable with their own specific or regional demographic dependencyon those "core" customers not being addressed as vigorously as the new marketopportunities are. They (those dealers) may not internalize or verbalize the marketing re-focus as

being why they, on their turf, feel that promotional activity is thin and ineffective, but that is why. It isn't that Harley is being lacklustre in marketing spend and promotional

initiative terms as such, it’s just that rather than being locked onto core customers,

the cross-hairs of Harley's marketing are being scatter-gunned across many groupsof potential customers - groups that aren't as thick on the ground in every part ofthe United States and elsewhere as may be supposed.Therein lies a potentially serious problem for Harley in the long-term; by

embracing "breadth" - as Matt Levatich proudly boasts - the company may alsobe embracing "thin", and doing so at a time when some are saying that it is alreadyvulnerable to being raided. In balance sheet and investor ROI terms Harley currently needs to restore some

lead to its pencil, some beef to its sandwich. With something like eight differentplatforms to market, and so many different customers to try and find a home forwithin its one baggage-rich brand, it is starting to be suggested in some circles,

especially among the more "active" of the new breed ofdividend-hungry post-downturn 21st century investors, that thecompany may be trying to go in too many directions at once.

Let's list them - those eight platforms - Softails, Dynas,Tourers, Sportsters, CVOs, V-Rods, 'Streets', and nowpotentially, probably, E-bikes as well. As I said before, don't

get me wrong, in many respects this is an excellent thing to bedoing, diversity of business-base is never a bad thing as such. But in business terms don't let anybody be fooled - as strategiesgo it doesn't come risk-free. It can bring further vulnerability ofthe kind it is designed to reduce if it is not part of a wider multi-

track strategy.Add to the platforms the other product group revenue streams such as P&A,

MotorClothes, Finance and so forth, and maybe the danger of target-overload startsto outweigh the traditional strengths of the Bar & Shield as a brand; maybe there'llsoon be too much static for those cross-hairs.I'm all for the aggregation of marginal gains, but for a publically listed company

that is traded in shark infested waters, and where the concept of long-term is who'spicking up the tab for the next lunch, in the bigger picture the incremental gainsto be garnered from the niches that Harley is chasing are at risk of being analysedaway as mere morsels. That bigger picture is one in which the luxury of servicing so many platforms and

customer groups is a strategy that Wandell eschewed when he first became CEO,and is a strategy that is bought as a result of balance street strength, not one thatof itself and on its own can generally be used to build balance sheet strength.Critical mass is rarely an aggregation of many things, it is a result of focus.Hey Keith, when and why did you decide to change course, and isn't it now a

shame that the Buell and MV Agusta brands are exploiting other rival's marketsand powering other owner's balance sheets instead of yours?

does breadthalso mean

embracing thin?

Is going "broad" spreading the brand too thinlyand making Harley vulnerable in the long-term?

BACK in May we reportedon the impendingavailability of the LaugeJensen Engineering/S&S

111" fuel injected engines thatmeet the upcoming EURO 4EMISSIONS STANDARDS.

The engine is now ready to ship andavailable straight away for builders, customizers and volume manufacturersfor the 2015 season.

With testing and development workundertaken both at S&S' own facility atViola, Wisconsin, and at TÜVAutomotive in Pfungstadt, Germany, the

much more stringent EURO 4regulations involve running the enginefor at least 1,000km (the efficiency ofcatalytic converters declines with use)and rolling road simulation of variousriding situations and engine behaviors.

At the time of our May feature, UffeLauge Jensen, who established thecompany in 2008, told us that inaddition to complete bikes (bespokeand volume production), the plan wasto offer the engine to custom bikebuilders and manufacturers in Europefor one-off and volume use.

The latest news is that Lauge JensenEngineering is now ready to start

marketing the engine and plans to give

the program its public debut in Europeat the AMD World Championship atINTERMOT (September 29th - October5th), under the 'Sleipner' motor brand.Norse mythology has it that Sleipnerwas Odin's immensely powerful and fasteight-legged horse!

The EURO 4 regulations come intoeffect on January 1st 2016 and Uffe toldAMD that "being the first with EURO 4may not be a primary concern for somecustomers, but it will give owners thereassurance that their bike is future-proof and ahead of the rest in terms ofits low emissions output."

Lauge Jensen designed its owncatalytic converter exhaust system, which Uffe says "we calibratedspecifically to the cat/chassis set-up. Asbuilders and volume producers startplanning already for bikes that will needto be road legal in 2016, the time is rightfor us to start getting the message intothe market, and now is certainly the timefor customizers to start planning for thisnext stage in Europe's regulations.

"As v-twin performance marketleaders S&S are the obvious and bestmanufacturer for us to have partneredwith on this project, and theirreputation, experience and expertisemeans that custom bike builders andthose planning series production can beassured that their customers will be

compliant straight away."In working to meet the new

standards the importance of the exhaustsystem and catalytic converters cannotbe overstated since the 50% increase inthe number and duration of rolling roadtest cycles demanded for certificationwill expose marginal design andengineering faults.

Speaking about their collaborationwith Lauge Jensen when the 'Viking'

concept was unveiled in the spring, S&Ssaid that they were " uniquely

positioned to support our customer andhelp develop a package that is not onlyefficient and clean, but retains thecharacter and sound that riders wantfrom an air-cooled v-twin." Uffe Lauge Jensen went on to say “thenew '1-eleven Squarehead' Sleipnermotor is mean, lean and green!"At first meeting the restrictions of theEURO 4 regulations impacted drasticallyon the power and noise characteristics, but by careful development of theinternals and fuel injection software, thepackage we have created restored the'feel' and sound as well as delivering apowerful result, enjoyable ridingexperience, and improved fuelconsumption." SBS has three different compounds of brakepads available for the Harley-DavidsonStreet. The company’s Sales Manager for NorthAmerica, Johan Rauff Kristensen said: “Wesupply riders on any bike with the ultimatestopping power, but we recognize that v-twins need different brakes than a dirt bikeor a fast track bikes. So we developed threedifferent choices of brake pads, individuallytargeted at different bike types and ages –all V-twin – and different riding styles. “The new Harley-Davidson Street 500 and

750 is a great example. It is originallyequipped with organic ceramic brake pads,so we recommend replacing them with ourceramic H.HF compound. Should a riderwant to upgrade the stock stopping power, then our H.CT Carbon Tec are the idealupgrade pad. For the bigger Harleys weoffer a sinter metallic choice of front H.HSand rear H.LS pads. We at SBS are the onlymanufacturer offering aftermarket sintermetal pads with different friction levelsfront and rear – and therefore the onlyaftermarket brake pads offering the samebrake balance as the factory fitted ones;something that’s essential on modern bikeswith ABS systems.”

Even the newpassenger hand rails aredesigned to flow with thebodywork.”The Freewheeler front end is allnew and features a seven-piecechrome nacelle that holds a dualhalogen headlamp in a chromebucket, and a 19in Enforcer cast-aluminum wheel with machinedhighlights. 2015 is said by the MotorCompany to deliver improvedmodulation and responsivenessand decrease hand lever effortby 40 percent. In addition, ABS isnow standard on all Softailmodels and optional on the Slim.New front brake componentsused on the motorcycles includea rigid four-piston fixed frontbrake caliper with 34 and 32mmpistons coated to minimize initialdisplacement, brake pads withhigh-output friction material, anew master cylinder with ahigher mechanical ratio, and anew 300mm front brake rotor. To cater for smaller riders H-Dhas introduced the Electra GlideUltra Classic Low and UltraLimited Low motorcycles, whichshare the same specification asthe regular models, but havesubtle changes to make themeasier to ride and handle at lowspeed and standstill. Among thedifferences are a seat height of25.6in (1.7in lower than thestandard models, and that isclaimed to be the lowest of anypremium touring motorcycle onthe market today), which is saidto allow more riders to placeboth feet flat on the groundwhen the motorcycle is stopped.

A new low-profile seat reducesthe reach to the foot controlsand the front and rearsuspension lowers the bike’scenter of gravity and makes iteasier to lift the motorcycle offits side stand. The width of boththe primary drive housing andderby cover has been reduced tofurther improve leg clearance tothe ground and a new handlebarplaces the hand controls 2incloser to the rider, while smaller

diameter grips reduce fingerreach to the brake and clutchlevers. In addition, a newpassenger footboard mountallows the footboards to befolded up out of the way whenpushing the motorcycle in agarage or driveway.“With these new models we areaddressing the important issueof fit, perhaps the ultimateexpression of personalization,”said Michelle Kumbier, Harley-

Davidson Senior VP ofMotorcycle Operations. “TheseLow models will allow manyriders to feel more comfortableand more confident when theysettle into the seat.”After previously launching thenew Road Glides, the MotorCompany has now added aversion of the new model to theCVO range. E MUSTANG states that its newest seat – the RunAround – isthe lowest and leanest seat in its line-up for Harley-DavidsonDyna and FL models“Look cool and stay comfy with the RunAround —

Mustang’s designers have engineered the lowest, leanest seatpossible for the 2006-up Harley Dynas and 2008-14 FLs,” saidMustang Marketing Director Marilyn Simmons. “Our oldschool New England craftsmanship combined with 21stcentury design means the seat looks as incredible as it feels.“Mustang believes that a well designed baseplate is the

key to success, so that was where theengineering team started.” A narrow front width of just 9.5in for

the Dyna (10.5in for FL applications)combined with an ultra-low profile

is the key to the new seat’s svelte design. “It is an entirely newdesign, not just a modified version of an existing seat,”explained Simmons. Made in-house at Mustang’s Three Rivers, Massachusetts

facility, the controlled density polyurethane foam is poured alittle thinner without compromising the comfort, but creatinga much thinner seat pad. “The exact angle and density of eachseat foam panel is formulated and cast to be soft enough for

comfort, but resilient enough to retain its shape andstructural integrity for years,” concluded Simmons.

Lighting options from ZodiacZODIAC has Vintage headlights in stock that arestyled like the lights used on most Europeanmotorcycles in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and unlike mostHarley units that have a bottom mount construction, these feature left and right mounting points. Vintageheadlights feature E-approved, 5-3⁄4in diameterhalogen headlight units and are ready to take 60mmdiameter speedos. The lights are supplied completewith a 12-volt 60/55-watt Halogen bulb, 12-volt 5-watt parking light and pre-wired fittings, and areoffered in a choice of black headlight with chromebezel or all chrome.

To ease mounting the Vintage headlamps, Zodiacalso has matching headlight bracket kitsavailable for use with 39mm and 41mm front forksin a choice of black or polished stainless steel.

The Phase 7 light unit from Küryakyn is nowalso available from Zodiac. The Phase 7 is a DOT andECE approved replacement for halogen lights. TheLED headlamp produces light with a colortemperature of 5,800K, closer to the colortemperature of daylight than halogen bulbs andtherefore said to provide better visibility. In additionthe complex reflector design provides improvedperformance while providing the appearance of atraditional headlamp.

The maintenance-free lamp uses a solid-state,bulb-free system that's said to be impervious todamage caused by shock and vibration, with a die-cast aluminum housing, non-yellowingpolycarbonate lens and a scratch-resistant hard

coating to protect against damage from impact, roadside debris and other hazards.

Advanced LED technology in the Phase 7 isclaimed to significantly reduce LED headlamp currentdraw compared to halogen products, 3.6 amp highbeam and 1.8 amp low beam, allowing more powerfor other vehicle requirements and extendedalternator life, while using the standard H4, three-blade wiring connector.

Moving to the rear of the bike, Zodiac is offeringSparto taillights. Previously only available inchrome or polished aluminum finishes, they can nowbe ordered in a black finish too. Further optionsinclude bulb-style with or without TÜV/E-approval,

as well as TÜV/E-approved with bright shining LEDs. A second taillight choice from Zodiac is ‘The

Factory’ light with a design inspired by classicmicrophones. Hand-cast from brass or aluminum, thetaillight features bright LEDs for brake and taillightfunctions with an E-approved lens. The Factorytaillights are, like most parts from the company, attractively packed in an ‘Old School’ wooden box.

WHEN Top Down Products were approachedby a customer who wanted a set of axlespinners reminiscent of those used in filmsby such characters as Ben Hur and JamesBond, the company took him seriously andbegan working on designs. The endresult has now been made publiclyavailable as the Shredder Series axlespinners, which spinfreely whenmounted tothe stationaryends of thebike’s axle. The shape of thethree rotating blades oneach spinner wasinfluenced by medievaldouble side axles, and are CNCmachined from billet aluminum. Toallow them to spin freely, stainlesssteel bearings are used throughout. Although this exact blade shape is exclusiveto the particular customer, other bladestyles can be produced to give a variety ofappearances.Following on from the introduction of theaxle spinners, Top Down is now producingmatching Shredder floor boards. TheShredder floor boards mimic the shape ofthe Spinner blades and incorporate elliptical

OFF-ROAD and on-highway ridinggear specialist Schampa has come upwith what owner and designer AndyMyers describes as "the nextgeneration in rider face-wear".

His Patent Pending "FaceFit" systemtakes the classic face-mask scarf andadds ergonomics and technology tohow it fits. A flexible, lightweight, adjustable Neoprene internalreinforcer that "remembers" the fitcontours of the face allows the ridersimply to press the scarf to create amolded fit that massively improves theseal around the nose and mouth toprotect against wind, dust, pollution,

sand and all the other airborne hazardsof riding.

Andy says that "when used inconjunction with eye-wear the effect ithas on the breath even helps reducefogging. I made some of these formyself, and have been doing tens ofthousands of miles with them. Then Ifigured, well, if it works for me, it couldwork for everyone!"

WHEN the Retro Modified classwas introduced at the 2013World Championship ofCustom Bike Building it wasdone in response to a change

in the definition of the Modified Harleyclass, which meant that only Evo engines orlater bikes were eligible. This, of course, meant that some builders who hadpreviously been building bikes with a viewto entering them in the Mod Harley classswitched to Retro Modified, and one ofthose was Jose Ferrer Lloret, of Sueca IronPerformance Cycles, who built FlatheadPower for Vicent Calafat.

The starting point for Flathead Power was a ’47WL 750, and much of the bike was left alone. Theframe was stripped back to bare metal and thenany unnecessary brackets were removed before itwas painted in-house at Sueca Iron. The samedetailing then took place on the original Springerfork, which also received copper plated finishingtouches such as the springs.

It is a similar story with the bike’s motor. The750cc Flathead was stripped and rebuilt, once

A new class introducedat the WorldChampionship of CustomBike Building in 2013 wasRetro Modified. It isopen to any bike thatuses an engine from apre-’84 motorcycle, butother than that it is anopen class. Among thediverse range of entrieswas Sueca IronPerformance Cycles’Flathead Power from theValencia region of Spain

again with copper plate detailing, and a 38mmBendix carb with a custom velocity stack, one-offSueca Iron exhaust pipes and a Joe Hunt magnetowere added. This is backed by the original three-speed transmission, which retains its original handshift. One area where the drivetrain deviates fromthe original is the primary drive, where an openchain system is used with a dry clutch. In order togive Vicent some protection form the chain, asimple wire cover was constructed.

To keep the period feel to Flathead Power a setof spoked wheels were selected to get it rolling. Atthe front the hub has been left bare on the 21in,40-spoke wheel that wears an Avon Speedmaster21/3.00. At the back of the bike a 40-spoke wheelis used again, but this time it is a 16in and shodwith a Shinko mt90/16. The rear wheel also gains abrake in the form of a mechanical drum.

Bodywork on Flathead Power has been keptsimple with a rear fender sourced from W&WCycles and then modified to suit the build, andboth the oil tank and split gas tanks that hangeither side of the frame’s backbone were fabricatedin-house at Sueca Iron, were the two-tone paintwas also applied.

While Jose has kept the build of Flathead Power relatively simple, it is his attention to detail thatmakes the bike really stand out, and stand out itcertainly did as it placed third in the Retro Modifiedclass at the 2013 World Championship of CustomBike Building.

FOLLOWING Harley-Davidson'sdecision to discontinue its factoryengine remanufacturing program,S&S Cycle have issued a timelyreminder that their rebuild programis available to authorized Harley-Davidson as well as S&S dealers, andthat the p rogram i s fo rremanufacturing of H-D (stock ormodified) as well as S&S engines.

The company says that they offera fast ten working day turn-aroundfrom receipt and that you get thesame engine back, meaning that youget to keep the original VIN.

Engines are rebuilt with PremiumViola V-Twin service parts and can be

rebuilt to stock specifications or havean S&S performance kit installed, with existing performance upgradesretained if they are still serviceable.

S&S say that their rebuild programfeatures a 30 day labor and one yearparts warranty, and that theirbeneficial freight rates mean thatthey offer no cost shipping to theirdealers on engines for rebuilding.

Traditionally only available to S&Sdealers, if you do not currently havean S&S Cycle account, no problem, because the company says that anengine rebuild package meets orexceeds their annual account spendcriteria.

MILWAUKEE based investmentanalysts RW Baird surveyedauthorized Harley-Davidsondealers after the Nashville dealermeeting to gauge reaction toupcoming season businessprospects and the 2015 newmodel year range in particular. The survey found that reaction tothe 2015’s was mostly positive, with some 70 percent of dealersrating MY2015 positively - thatcompares to the 95 percentreaction to the debut of theProject Rushmore bikes a yearago. It also shows that the 2013and other initiatives so far thisyear are gifts that keep on givingfor Harley, because just 24months ago the MY2012announcement was only

receiving a 22 percent positiverating.Dealers report that retail demandimproved 3-5 percent in July andAugust versus the year before. However, it is proving tricky forHarley to strike the rightinventory/price balance. Harleycut its shipment forecast in July"to protect the scarcity value ofthe brand" according to Baird, who, contrary to NADA, arereporting used bike values asgaining in price - up 0.5 percentin July/August.Baird report that more dealerswere choosing to sell belowMSRP though, as they seek toclear end-of-season inventory, suggesting that following mostdealers reporting that inventory

was too thin and too slow inarriving earlier this year, many(42 percent) were seeing it as toohigh going into MY2015deliveries.

Harley dealers report 70 percentpositive reaction to MY2015 bikes

S&S free shipping on stock/aftermarket rebuilds

Harley dealers are still basking in the afterglow of 2013's Project Rushmore launch and are now glad to see the Road Glide returningto the line-up. Post the Nashville dealer meeting, research by Baird revealeda 70 percent positive response to MY2015 among Harley dealers

S&S Cycle's engine rebuild program is available for stock as well as S&S engines
