Glycerin and sodium PCA act in synergyto draw water into the stratum corneum.

Glycerin is a water-soluble, extremelyhygroscopic liquid. It is a humectant, so itattracts moisture to the skin, and it alsodraws moisture up through the skinlayers.

Sodium PCA, an amino acid derivative, isalso a hygroscopic humectant and isnaturally occurring in the skin,attracting moisture to the stratumcorneum for a softer, more hydratedappearance.

Sodium hyaluronate and urea, two “naturalmoisturizing factors”, work together to holdwater within the stratum corneum.

Sodium hyaluronate, a water-bindingpolysaccharide, provides a water reservoirand fills up the space between the skin’sconnective fibers, keeping the ECM’scomponents hydrated and the skin’sstructure intact.

Urea is naturally found within the stratumcorneum, along with other physiologicalchemicals, and helps to soften skin andretain moisture.

The natural skin barrier is composed of intercellularlipids which help assemble the stacked formation ofthe stratum corneum, creating an impermeable barrierfor the passage of water and “natural moisturizingfactors”. Trehalose, a complex sugar, reinforces thelamellar structure of epidermal lipids, helping tomaintain the stacked formation of the stratum corneumand thereby preventing water loss.

Polyquaternium-51 is a known phospholipid copolymerthat is a skin conditioning agent with film-formingproperties. It plays an essential role in proper barrierfunction, improving moisture retention and helpingprevent the evaporation of water.
