Hello and an Autumnal welcome to the October edi-tion of Amber Valley Voice. This month is a fantastic month for local information, offers and new advertis-ers - welcome to all! Robert Rawson the Hypnotherapist has had his brain picked this month to provide us with a bit more information on what hypnotherapy entails, which is particularly relevant in Stoptober! We also have PWD decorators offering 10% off, Body & Sole exclusive offers, 10% off Lea-brooks Interiors and a FREE Zumba class with Lucie on page 20. We also have a fantastic event for Help for Heroes and a call to action for volunteers for both this charity and the Parkside Surgery Patients Group. Finally, I have struggled to find local Halloween and Bonfire Night information in the Alfreton & S. Normanton area...if you know of any, I would love to post them on my Facebook and Twitter pages, so please send them through (I’m looking for some local events to attend myself!)

Happy Reading Emily

We have a new county co-ordinator named Frances and she's in the process of building a new exciting team and is looking for volunteers to help. You can do as little or as much as you want, from holding a collection bucket at an event to giving a speech about the charity and collecting a cheque. There is plenty of room for people to join the Derbyshire team and all you have to do is say ' I want to help' Please contact Frances if you want more information via email [email protected] or come along to 'dance for heroes' at the Post Mill Centre, South Normanton on Nov 2nd to see us in action and have a good night out too.

-1- The Excavator pub have kindly given us permission for our readers to park in their overflow car park . The walk starts by heading under the bridge at the back of the pub, taking the stile by a gate.

-2- Follow the path until you reach a large pond, then look for a metal gate on your right and take the wooden gate.

-3- Follow the path round to the right to another metal gate and take another wood-en gate before turning immediately left, keeping the hedge on your left and heading uphill.

-4- At the top of the hill pass through a wooden gate and walk along the path until you reach a large gap in the hedge on your right. Turn right here to reach a stile that takes you into open fields.

-5- Turn left and follow around the outside of the field until you pass under some tele-phone wires, take a stile on your left, which takes you on a path around the outside of the Bowmer Kirkland building.

-6- Exit Bowmer Kirkland by the main en-trance and carefully cross the road, Follow a footpath sign through a wooden gate and down a path with a hedge on your left. Car-ry on through another wooden gate.

-7- At the point where the path crosses another turn right and go through a wooden gate into open fields behind Heage Windmill.. Follow the path up to a gate. If you like you can follow the road left to Heage Windmill however return to this point to continue the walk.

This month ‘s walk takes us a little further afield but it is well worth it to enjoy this fantastic walk, which was shown to us by the wonderfully supportive Ali and Chris-tine from Seals Fodder Room. The walk takes you from the Excavator pub up to the lovely Heage Windmill before taking you back through Buckland Hollow to where you began. There will be plenty of opportunities to let your dogs off the lead but as always make sure to ensure their safety & abide by the country code at all times. If you have a favourite walk of your own why not share it with us by email at [email protected] or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638.

3 Mile Circular Walk from the Excavtor pub to Heage Windmill A scenic walk for you and your dog that gives you a chance to see a unique local landmark. The route will take about 1 1/2 hours. It is fairly even but there are a

few uphill sections. The terrain is mixed and a good pair of boots and long trousers are advised to tackle some muddy sections and avoid stinging plants on the paths.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who

chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the

area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

-9- On the other side of the road pass through a gate and follow the path to cross a stile. Carry straight on through an open field on the path. At the end of the field, just after a tree with a large stone beside it, take the path alongside the hedge not the farm track. Shortly you will reach a stone gap through the hedge.

-10-Follow the path across a little wooden bridge and head straight on towards the next stile. Walk straight across the field along the path to a stone gap. Again fol-low the path up to a stile on your left. Carry straight ahead on the path up to the top of the field. By a large gap take the stile on your right into another field and with the wall on your left walk until you reach a stile beside a gate on your left.

-11- Head diagonally down the field, taking the path that heads towards the old stone posts of a gate at the far corner of the field. Carry straight on with the hedge on your left until you reach a stone stile that takes you onto a walled path.

-12- At the end of the path walk straight through the farm yard and out the gate. Then turn immediately right, cutting diagonally across the grass verge until you reach the wooded area.

-13-Head right onto a wide track that takes you through a horse stile into Buckland Hollow. Walk along the track,. When you pass under a bridge and over a stile keep to the right. Pass over one more stile and turn left along the path that will take you back to the Excavator pub car park.

DVD Review - Safe (15)

This is a must see for any Jason Statham fan or action film fan….or indeed both!! Mei is a fantastically gifted young girl whose photo-graphic memory and incredible calculator of a brain sees her targeted by a Triad gang who take her to New York to use her as a safe way of holding information on your businesses. After she memorises a code she suddenly finds herself caught in a battle between the Triads, the Russian Mob and corrupt cops all determined to capture her for the code. In steps down-and-out Luke Wright (Jason Stratham) who vows to protect her at all costs. This film delivers on all the key criteria you would expect, it is breathlessly fast paced with mind boggling fight scenes, crazy car chases, all delivered by the effortlessly slick Stratham. It’s not going to keep you up talking over the finer points of the plot but if you want a evening of enjoyable escapism get out the popcorn and settle back with a copy of Safe.

We are conjuring up a picture, in this phrase, of someone wanting the extreme: something so precious to us, it is inconceivable that we give it. That is, of course exactly what blood is; a precious constant delivery of nutrients and oxygen and removal of waste products- rather like a superior meal-on-wheels and dustbin man at your disposal 24/7. Without it, we perish and the NHS spends a huge amount of money on heart medications and operations as well as stroke prevention and diabetes-all of which can compromise blood supply to tissues.

But what do we do to help ourselves? We may exercise, which is the best way to encourage blood flow, but even that can cause problems if our choice of exercise tightens muscles making it difficult for blood to flow freely. Ongoing aching in between exercise sessions may give a clue that muscles are not recovering well from the micro-trauma which we induce with most forms of exercise and the waste products of lactic acid may be hanging around rather than being excreted.

Effective warm-ups and cool-downs all help to prevent this, as does massage which encourages blood flow and literally feeds your tissues and encourages their good health. There are many types and variations of massage, but a good sports massage ticks most boxes, except perhaps comfort! However, a good therapist can gauge your reaction to treatment and moderate the depth of massage, as you need to feel relatively relaxed- tense muscles will limit the effect of treatment.

Of course any massage will help and especially if tension, e.g. at work or relationships is a feature, then a relaxing massage will be of benefit by loosening muscles which mean they stop feeding back messages to the brain saying that there is tension and therefore there must be a problem - further causing involuntary tension in the muscles. Breaking this cycle involves dealing with the initial problem, but reducing the effect and simply "giving yourself a break" is important psychologically and for your comfort.

Endorphin release, helping us to feel happier and more positive, is a well-documented feature of massage and is much cheaper than a shopping spree also reputed to have the same effect! So whether you are a sports person, a hard worker at home or at work, or would simply like to feel better, then consider a massage, which humans throughout the ages have recognised as important: In fact in many cultures you may be asked, not "Do you have massage?" But "WHO does your massage?"

Come on Britain-keep up!

Some gardeners leave dahlias in the ground to overwinter. If you’re tempted to do this make sure you mulch around them really heavily. Otherwise lift once the leaves have browned and store in just-damp compost or wrap in newspaper under frost free cover. They can be divided or used for cut-tings in spring.

Hardy geraniums and achillea can be cut back hard, lift-ed with a fork and teased apart then replanted. There should still be enough warmth in the soil to ensure they

take root before winter.

Bush fuchsias can be pruned by a third as their leaves fall and they become dormant.

Top Tip You can start to improve your soil for next year by spreading year-old leaf mould. It doesn’t need to be fully rotted. Worms will take it down. This should also create some space to store this year’s raked leaves for next year.
