APP RATIONALE
JumpStart involves the development of an
immersive physical education application. It aims
to target children 3-5 years of age through a tablet
device, enabling educational cognitive tasks to
take place. By collaborating with designers and
educational professionals JumpStart provides a
valuable platform suitable for further development
and refinement.
Concept Statement
JumpStart is an immersive educational application
designed to develop basic cognitive tasks that are
user friendly and visually appealing for the target
audience of children aged 3-5 years old.

THE PROCESS
Concept 1: Monsters
Our initial response for the Jumpstart application
was the development of a monster character set.
This idea further developed previous approaches
to the application, incorporating a flat vector
illustration that aims to appeal to a child’s
imagination through a sense of adventure and
excitement.
The colourful, friendly and happy appearance
reduces the negative stigma and scary elements
that previous groups identified children generally
associate with, in order to form an appealing
educational tool for the target audience as well as
providing an option for user customisation.
It was also important to include elements of the
body that could easily emphasize movement.
THE PROCESS
Concept 2: Children
We developed a second concept that consisted of
children figures. This concept surfaced as children
may relate better to human figures than monsters.
By taking an illustrative approach that involved
flat vectors with simple shapes, it enabled the
characters limbs to become exaggerated to
provide a foundation for recognisable motions as
well as animation.
These figures, like the monsters, have the ability to
delve into character customisation with elements
of skin colour, hair colour and outfits. Two genders
are also represented here which may in turn appeal
to children more as it conveys similarities to them.
THE PROCESS
Concept 3: Animals Costume
In our creation of concept three we developed a
character set that consisted of a young boy or girl
in an animal costume.
This concept was inspired by ‘kawaii’ culture as
it creates cute, lovable and adorable characters
that children can interact with throughout the
educational process.
It encourages users (children aged 3-5 years old)
to participate in all activities the application has to
offer through its adventurous appeal.
We further developed this concept as we believe
this character set had the greatest potential for
further application to the project, whilst continuing
to appeal to the target audience.

Rabbit On The Moon is a sans-serif typeface. Its
cartoon appearance creates a ‘happy’ feel making
it the ideal fit for an application targeted at children.
COLOUR PALETTE
Our colour palette was derived from themes of
happiness, excitement, fun and playful. These
themes were applied in order to set a tone for
the immersive application, whilst also being
meaningful to the target audience of children aged
3-5 years old.
