SOCIAL STUDIES Amber Davis
AIMS OF THIS PRESENTATION Theme for assignment
Artefact that I have chosen
Planning the lessons
School visits
Things I need to develop
How this has had a positive impact on my assignment preparation
CONFLICT AND PEACE Very important that children have an understanding of the world around
them.
Lots of opportunities for learning
Two main questions for thought…
1. Why do conflicts arise, how do they develop, and how are they resolved?
2. How do conflicts affect communities?
Focusing on the theme of Remembrance
THEME FOR THE LESSONS I decided to focus the lessons around Remembrance Day as it was a fitting
theme and is only a few weeks away.
In order to do this we needed to go back to where it all started
The Great War
I Needed to find some artefacts first
THE ARTEFACTS I couldn’t just pick one!!!!
CONTINUED… Originally the helmet was going to be the main artefact, however there was
so much learning that could have been taken from the rest of the artefacts so I decided to use them all.
The artefacts all piece together a true story
William James Pirie
Fought in the Bore war and The Great War
Died in November 1917
8th Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders
Buried in the Loos memorial
Rank when killed: Company Sergeant Major
LESSON 1Previous experience:
Brief knowledge of WW1 and what Remembrance day is for.
Experiences and outcomes:
By exploring places, investigating artefacts and locating them in time, I have developed and awareness of the ways we remember and preserve Scotland’s history. SOC 1-02a
As I write for different purposes and readers, I can describe and share my experiences, expressing what they made me thing about and how they made me feel. ENG 2-30a.
(Switch to PP)
LESSON 2 Focusing on the act of remembrance
Why do we have remembrance
Where did is come from?- Flanders fields, John McCrae, 11:11:11
Looking at the significance of the Poppy: in Scotland, Lady Haig
Looking at what happens during a remembrance service
Looking at different types of memorials/ cenotaphs
TASKS:
Design a war memorial
Poetry challenge
LESSON 3 Planning a remembrance service with the p7 class!
Great active lesson
Children all need to work together to put together a sort of ‘mini show’
REFLECTION Overall the children responded well to the first lesson
The artefacts helped to get them engaged and interested especially when they were wrapped up.
It was a shame that they had not covered WW1 as at times I felt they were quite confused.
The lesson allowed for lots of class and group discussion.
