1.1 Introduction

Welcome to an overview of Newspapers.com Library Edition. This is one of two modules offered for this historical newspaper content which is a part of the Ancestry suite of products.

Dating from the 1600s to the 2010s, this database contains over 10,000 plus historical newspapers in full runs or portions of runs from around the globe.

1.3 The Interface

Notes:

Newspapers.com Library Edition has a simple interface designed to engage the searcher quickly with the keyword search box in the center of the screen. The next module covers searching and saving.

For now, we are going to look at two other options for working in the interface: the Browsing and Papers menu options. Knowing these two commands will help you understand your subscribed collection along

with familiarizing you with how things are organized in the product before you learn to search.

1.4 Browse Newspapers

Notes:

Selecting the country, the state,the city, the newspaper, the year, the month, and the day from the Browse Newspapers command is a good way to see what each state or country contains along with breadth of coverage.

1.5 Browse Results and Options

Notes:

After selecting the date of a newspaper, you will see the thumbnails of the available pages. Clicking on them will take you to the article viewer which we will examine a bit later. Other options for interacting

with papers from this page include searching within the selected paper or browsing papers by location using a map instead of the expanding menu.

1.6 Newspapers in Your Collection

Notes:

Another way to examine the collection is to use the Papers menu option which will reveal all the papers in your subscription. You will see the total number of newspapers, an overview of date coverage, a tableau map showing state coverage, and options to search the papers.

The difference between the two search fields is what they search. Narrow by Newspaper Title on the left will look just in the title field of the paper for things like the city’s name or a keyword like “women” or “farmer” to locate a paper designed for a particular audience. The right search box searches the entire collection of papers for keywords, names, events, etc.

Once you are in a particular paper, you can learn several things. First, you can see the current page count and dates of coverage. Next, you can Browse by Date. The light blue highlighting in the calendar indicates dates the paper is available. The dropdown date selectors will allow you to change year and month. The Follow and Share buttons will be covered in the next module and are ways to interact further with the newspaper content. Finally, the Browse button will take you back to the expandable browse menu we looked at previously.

1.8 The Viewer

Notes:

In the newspaper viewer, you will be able to flip to the next page and navigate pages using the filmstrip viewer icon (when it is toggled on).

You can also increase or decrease the size of the page and change the contrast, including inverting the color. If needed, you can rotate the image. Finally, you can make the newspaper full screen. To go back to viewer mode, click the Escape key on your keyboard.

Other things you may notice in the Viewer are the Find, Clip, Print and Save, Share, and Save to Ancestry commands. “Find” toggles the search bar on an off in the viewer where you can search within the paper and the results will be highlighted in yellow. More on searching and the other commands shown in the next module.

1.10 Summary

Now that we’ve completed the overview module of Newspapers.com Library Edition, you will be able to find papers of interest to you from a particular region or topic; discover content using several browse options, and read the paper using the viewer in the way it best suits your needs.
