Return to School

After the Premier’s announcement on Sunday that schools will be returning to onsite learning from Week 2 of Term 4, I am sure there was a huge sense of collective relief amongst our community. Remote Learning has been a challenge of our endurance and our resilience but we now have a finish line in sight. All of the Kilmore Primary School staff are looking forward enormously to the return of our students and to regaining a sense of normality. Currently, we are awaiting advice from the Department of Education regarding the operational guidelines for Term 4 but as soon as the information is available to me I will make it available to you. Over the last two weeks of Remote Learning, we will use parent and student surveys to take the pulse of how our community is feeling about returning to school and we will use your feedback to put together a comprehensive return to school program.

Thanks and Gratitude

As we move to the end of the Remote Learning period, I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to all of the staff of Kilmore Primary School for their tireless work over the last few months. As a school, one of our greatest challenges has been managing the demands of a very large onsite program whilst still delivering a high quality remote learning program. At times, our staff have experienced the “double-whammy” of working onsite by day then attending to their remote learning duties in the evening. This has been a challenge faced by few other schools across the state and I would like to thank all of our administration staff, Education Support staff, teachers and leaders for their ongoing commitment to our students and families.

Recruitment Processes

We are currently working through an extensive recruitment process to finalise our teaching team for 2021.Given the extent of the rapid change that we have all had to face, we have brought forward our recruitment processes to achieve a settled 2021 teaching team for our students and families. I look forward to announcing the successful candidates to the community in the early weeks of Term 4.

Virtual Assemblies

Over the last term, our virtual assemblies have provided us with a fabulous opportunity to celebrate student achievement. The Grade 6 student work-samples showcased by Mr Oakley provided fabulous examples of the great work that has been occurring in the remote learning environment. The jokes which were shared by our students also provided some great light-hearted moments and definitely “put a smile on the dial” of our teachers. In Term 4 we will continue to hold virtual assemblies to connect with our community and celebrate student achievement if we are unable to return to the onsite format.

Grade 6 Virtual Camp and Grade 6 Journals

While our Grade 6 students have had to miss out on attending their Sovereign Hill camp this year, this week they are attending their Grade 6 Virtual Camp. Although nothing can replace the spirit of camaraderie and connectedness that a camp provides, I would like to acknowledge the huge effort that has been made by our Grade 6 teachers in offering this alternative. Judging by the activity with the Google Classroom collaborative space yesterday morning, our Grade 6 students have loved the opportunity to virtually travel across the world and interact with different cultures and languages. I would also like to congratulate our Grade 6 teachers (ably assisted by our fabulous ES staff) for the effort they put into designing the Grade 6 journals which our students received this week. The journals contain a Grade 6 year level photo and space for our students to record their thoughts from this unprecedented time –this is a fabulous initiative from our Grade 6 Team.

Specialist House Colours Day

Finally, this Friday our Specialist Team will be running a House Colours Day as part of their Specialist program. This is a great opportunity for our students to stay connected to their House and get involved in some “friendly competition” and House rivalry. I would like to thank our Specialist Team for developing this concept and for the innovation they have shown throughout the remote learning period. The Specialist Team will be in contact with students via Google Classroom with further details closer to the day.

All the best,

Neil O’Sullivan

Principal

Captain Marvel has been very busy helping Mrs Vilinskis with numeracy planning for Term 4.

This week he has noticed students have uploaded some amazing graphs from last weeks data challenge.

It is not to late to enter, look out for student work from the challenge in next weeks newsletter.

Mr O’Sullivan

We have 2 reserved spaces at the front of the school on Sutherland Street and two reserved spaces on Lancefield Road.

If you do not hold a valid permit please keep these spaces clear.

We’re skipping through the term!

Jump Rope for Heart is well underway and it’s great to see so many children trying out the wonderful skill of skipping with smiles on their faces.

We have already had to increase our goal once, with a massive chance to do that again.

What makes this program exciting is that we have already raised the most money EVER since being involved in Jump Rope for Heart which shows just how big our hearts are.

It’s not long until our Jump Off Day on Friday 18th September so keep on practising those tricks! And don’t forget to share your online fundraising page with friends and family to raise money for a great cause!

Still need to sign up online? It’s easy just follow this link and enter your details.

Well done to all the students who are participating in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. You have now read 704 books! The challenge will finish on the 18th of September. Please keep up the great reading.

The Year 2s have been learning to write information reports.

Page 7: Amazing Work From Our Onsite Learners

Thank you to Blake and Liam from 2D for sharing their writing with us.

This week Mrs Vilinskis and I have been planning Term 4 with our teachers. We have lots of great things planned!

Last week Miss George and I presented the work we have been doing across the school in writing to other schools as part of our work with the University of Melbourne Network of Schools. They were very interested in what we have been doing, particularly our Sparks writing, the Year 4 virtual ‘bump it up’ wall and the use of Chatterpix to share writing! The other schools also shared their work with us. We hope to collaborate further with them around some of the work they presented. Students, if you have any work that you are really proud of, please email it to me at [email protected] and I will include it in the school newsletter.

Have a great week,

Emma White

BreastScreen Victoria van visiting Kilmore for the first time to provide free breast screens From 3 September – 16 October, BreastScreen Victoria’s hot pink van will visit Kilmore for the first time to provide free breast screens to the community. Those aged between 50 and 74 should have a free breast screen every two years. They are the best way to find breast cancer early, before there are symptoms and when treatment is most successful. All breast screens are with a female radiographer, in a friendly and safe environment. You don’t need a doctor’s referral or Medicare card, and screens only take 10 minutes. The van is operating with COVID-19 safety measures in place to protect both the community and staff. All clients who screen on the van in Kilmore must wear a face mask. Appointments are being spaced out to ensure physical distancing and to reduce the number of people in the waiting area. It also provides more time for staff to clean in-between appointments. The van, which visited Broadford in the past, will trial the new site in Kilmore to improve access and reach the largest number of people in the area. The van will be at 58 Sydney St, Kilmore (opposite the Commonwealth Bank) from 3 September – 16 October. Appointments for the Kilmore van can be made online at www.breastscreen.org.au or by calling 13 20 50.
