    Advantages And

    Disadvantages Of Using

    Green Energy Sources

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Using GreenEnergy Sources?

oday, we are now aware of the effects of global warming.Fortunately, its not too late and we can still change which is

why many are pushing for green energy sources. The advantageof using green energy sources is that it is clean so it does not emitanything harmful into the air which has an impact on theenvironment. It is also renewable which means we will never run out

of it unlike oil which is expected to dry up in a decade or so. Althoughgreen energy facilities are expensive to build, it requires lessmaintenance so you dont have to shell out a lot of money to operateit. It can also bring economic benefits to certain areas even boosttourism. While these sound good, there are some who say that thereare advantages to using such technology.

While green energy sources can produceelectricity, how much it can generate is not

consistent. This is because we have no controlof the weather so if a certain area relies on solarenergy and there is a weather disturbance, it willnot be able to convert sunlight into electricity.

Building these facilities also requires a lot of land so we may have tocut on farmland which is what many are concerned about if more

wind turbines are to be put up.

    AAnnootthheerrDDiissaaddvvaannttaaggee

Another disadvantage is thefact that some of the greenenergy sources cannot beinstalled in certain areas ofthe planet. For instance,

    wave energy can only be

utilized if the waves comingfrom the ocean reach at least16 feet. The use geothermalenergy can only be done ingeologically unstable parts of

the planet. But if you look at such arguments, places that cannot useone form of green energy source can be substituted for another. If

wind turbines need more space, they can be installed near the coastinstead of putting these on land. A study shows that you can generatemore electricity while these are in the ocean.

While the weather is something we cannotcontrol, it is not everyday that there is a

weather disturbance so this too shall pass.If solar energy is being used and the sun iscovered, the emergency generators will beactivated and use up the energy that wasstored.

The point is that there are ways around the

arguments put by certain individuals which discourage the use of greenenergy sources. In fact, research is ongoing to try and harness othermeans to generate the power we need.

A very good example of this is called ocean thermal energy. Power isgenerated by harnessing the different temperatures in the water. It iscurrently being used on a small scale both in Japan and Hawaii.

In the US, only 7% ofgreen energy sources areused nationally. This wasmuch higher 11 years agoand if we dont have to

worry about the cost of oilor even reduce ourdependency on it, we haveto invest more in this clean

    energy.

We can get it from green energy sources such as biomass, biodiesel, geothermal, solar, water and the wind. These are things we have allaround us and all it takes is for someone to harness it instead ofrelying on traditional non-renewable means to produce energy.

    Benefits Of Green Energy

    Sources

What are the Benefits of Green Energy Sources?

or a very long time, we have relied on fossil fuels. It providesheat to our homes, gas for our cars and electricity. Since we arenow using it more than ever, there is a consequence. We are

depleting our resources and slowly killing our planet. Fortunately, wecan change our ways and then shift our attention to green energysources.

    Why Green Energy Sources?

But why green energy sources? Wellbecause there are advantages to using them

which we will never be able to get if wedont change our ways. This is also even ifsome will argue that the problem withgreen energy is that it is sometimesdifficult to generate the power we need.

While that may be true, that is why thereare other green energy sources available

and we just to know which ones are viablegiven the geographic location.

The various green energy sources such as solar, wind, wave, hydropower and geothermal do not produce anything harmful whichmay have a negative effect on the environment.

This is the exact opposite of what you get when you continue tooperate a coal or nuclear power plant. Coal you have to rememberreleases carbon dioxide into the air. On its own, it may not cause that

much damage but there are currently 50,000 coal plants around theworld and that number is expected to grow.

    Nuclear Plants as Renewable Energy

Nuclear plants may notrelease anything harmfulinto the air. The issue ishow we dispose of the

spend rods and if anothernuclear accident shouldoccur. We rememberChernobyl and Three MileIsland. We have probablylearned better ways toprevent another incidentfrom happening. Throughthe years, a few minoraccidents have occurred

and although the leak was contained, just imagine if it wasnt?

Green energy sources may not be maintenance free but at least it doesnot require that much to maintain them compared to conventionalmeans. In the end, we save money because such facilities dont costthat much to operate.

The next advantage of using green energy sources is that we will neverrun out of them. For centuries, the suns rays have reached so has the

wind which is blown from the sea. By using it, we decrease our

dependence on oil which is a nonrenewable resource.

If you think about it, many of us have taken these green energysources for granted. If we do the right thing now, future generations

will not have to face the mess that we could have handled on our ownyears before.

In short, the power is in our hands.

We have the technology and we

know what to do with it. The onlything we need is to do is to put ourmoney where our mouth is becausedespite the number of conferenceson global warming and climatechange, little has happened.

It is easy to talk about howconcerned we are about theenvironment but you have to ask

yourself when will more solarpanels or wind turbines will beerected? When will the number of

coal or nuclear power plants be reduced?

Imagine all thepollution that the city inthis picture produce

every day. A greenenergy source is thesolution to theenvironmental, politicaland social problems ofthis lifetime. Byspending more on thesetechnologies, no country will have to depend on another or even acorporation for their power needs because they are self dependent andfree.

    Biofuels Are A Green

    Energy Source

Did you know that Biofuels Are A Green Energy Source ?

iofuels are also a green energy source. It has been around for avery long time and lately, people are beginning to take notice.

Liquid biofuel which is the one used in cars is a natural and renewabledomestic fuel that can only be used for diesel engines. This can bemade from vegetable oils mostly soy and corn. The nice thing about itis that it contains no petroleum, is nontoxic and biodegradable.

By fueling up with biofuel, you decrease the pollutants in the airbecause it does not emit anything. Right now, it is the only fuelapproved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), passedevery Heath-Effects Test of the Clean Air Act and meets therequirements of the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

One example of this is biodiesel which is made from alcohol likemethanol and a chemical process that separates glycerine and methylesters (biodiesel) from fats or vegetable oils. Aside from methanol, some countries have also experimented with corn and sugarcane to

create their own version of biofuel.

Glycerine is a common products and this is used in making toothpasteand soap. Since it is quite new, the process of converting it is quiteexpensive and right now, this is still much more expensive per galloncompared to petroleum.

But if you look at whatyou pay for it, the

returns are hugebecause you get to doyour share to preserve acleaner environment, animprovement in airquality and a reductionof cancer-causingagents.

A cheaper and primitive way to make bio-diesel is by collecting

cooking oil and then processing it. This may not good your carsengine so be careful if you decide to use it.

    Biodiesel

If you are skeptic about biodiesels, studies have shown that itsperformance on the road is just as good as petroleum in terms ofpower to efficiency, hauling and climbing. You can use this in its pure

form or blend with petroleum fuel. The most common mix in themarket is 20/80 and is referred to as B20. This means that 20% isbiodiesel and the remainder is 80%. Another version is the E85 whichis fuel composed of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.

The best part about using biodiesel is that you only have to make afew changes in your engine to be able to use it. Aside from making thecar run, it also helps clean the engine. If you are concerned that this

will void the warranty of your vehicle should there be a problem, dont worry because it doesnt. In the US, B20 is the most common one

available but there are only a few gas stations that carry it.

When cars first rolled out in the beginning of the 20th century, HenryFord planned to make these vehicles especially the Model Ts runusing ethanol. Tests have even shown that these may also run usingpeanut oil.

    Biomas as Green Energy

    Source

Is Biomass A Green Energy Source?

s biomass a green energy source? According to experts, yes it is. Infact, it is one of the three main areas of bioenergy.

    But what is bioenergy?

Well, it is a process by which organic material such as animal waste, plantsand wood are used to generate electricity, produce heat and also aid in theproduction of biofuels. In the case of biomass, hot air or water is

generated to produce electricity. This is done through direct combustionand is considered the simplest and most common method of generatingenergy from biomass.

Aside from generating electricity, biomass can be used for hot airproduction so you can keep a place warm. For this to work, biomass hasto be combusted in a furnace where it heats either water or air. Speakingof water, this enables you to have warm water so you can take a shower. In short, biomass in itself can also be used in a small scale as a heatingsystem.

Since you can generate electricity and heat, some people have been able tocombine the two which is known as combined heat and power or CHP.Something that many consider to be good as you use one energy sourcefor two purposes.

If you are able to comparethe amount of electricity

generated betweenbiomass and lets say solarenergy, you will notice thatbiomass produces morebecause the energy inplants is already capturedand stored. You donthave to collect it first

    which is what happens

with solar or even wind energy since this is manufactured technology. It isreadily available unlike the other two which is totally dependent on theweather.

    Using Organic Waste

Another is the fact that you can even use organic waste to productelectricity. No other green energy source can do that and by using thisextensively, any government can save money because you dont have tospend money to dispose of the waste and you will no longer depend on

foreign oil that much to power your plants.

The downside to biomass is that because you have to burn waste andother organic materials to product power, you add to the pollution whichis already in the atmosphere. But this can be offset of course by plantingmore crops which we know helps reduce the amount of carbon dioxide inthe atmosphere.

You will also have to shell out a lot of money initially for the costs oflabor, the transport of these fuels and how these should be stored.

    Biomass uses renewablenatural resources which

is why it is considered agreen energy source. This means that we havean endless supply of itaround just like thepower of the sun or the

wind which flows fromthe ocean. The challengeis to find suitable land

that has a sufficientwater supply so these willbe able to grow.

This means that in areas where water is not that abundant, you cannotrely on biomass technology to generate power. When that happens, youuse other means and one good example given the right geographicallocation is wave energy which is the process of generating power from the

water. There is a way to generate power without causing harm to theenvironment. We have the technology and the green energy sources. Wejust need to muster the willingness to make it happen.

    Water as Green Energy

    Source

Can You Use A Green Energy Source Like Water To Power ACar?

or For more than a century, we rely on oil to fuel our cars. Butdid you know that the worlds oil is close to drying up because itis a nonrenewable resource? Well that may not happen

tomorrow or next year but we are getting closer because of thedemand in the world market. Why wait for that day when we can relyon a green energy source like water to power our cars.

    BMW Powered with Water?

If you think thats impossible, well it is already here but this is not yetbeing made on a commercial scale. The German automobile BMW hasproduced the worlds first ever hydrogen powered car. While only 100of these units were produced, you can already imagine if more of these

    vehicles are on the road.

The initial model namely the BMW Hydrogen 7 uses the body of the760i model. Once you pop the hood, you will notice that the engine isdifferent since it uses gas and hydrogen. This just means we have not

yet totally abandoned are dependence on gas. Given more time andmoney, the current 4.7 miles per gallon it can travel using water alonecould hit double digits in the future.

The biggest challenge to using water as a green energy source asopposed to oil in vehicles is the engine. While there are cars aroundlike the Prius which runs on electricity and gas thanks to fuel cell

technology, the hydrogen combustion is less than 10 years old so youcould say we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

To prevent the water from evaporating, this has to be stored in a large,30-gallon, bi-layered and highly insulated tank so this does notevaporate into compressed gas. Another safety mechanism is the

valves which are designed to open should the pressure within the tankexceed 5 bars.

With the success of the BMW H7,

the company came out with a newcar that is also partly powered by

water known as the H2R. While wecannot yet put our garden hose intothe fuselage to fill it up, this vehicleuses liquid nitrogen as a fuel.

Tests on this vehicle have shown itcan achieve 285hp and reach a topcruising speed of 185.5 miles per

hour. It can also accelerate from 0 to60 miles per hour under 6 seconds.

But why use water? It is becausehydrogen combustion is clean so it does not emit harmful gases intothe atmosphere unlike cars that run on petrol or diesel that emitcarbon monoxide. Studies have shown that it also weighs less thanhydrocarbon-based fuels and burns faster than conventional gasoline.

So when can you expect to buy a car that uses water as a green energysource? Hopefully in the next 10 to 20 years. It is really up to theautomakers because all we can do is wait until a better and clear carhits the dealership.

    Geothermal As A Green

    Energy Source

Can You Use Geotherman as A Green Energy Source?

e have the technology to do a lot of things and one of theseis to tap the earths energy. This is exactly what we do when

we decide to use geothermal which happens to be a greenenergy source.

    What is Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is energy obtained by tapping heat from the earthitself. This comes from magma and the radioactive decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium. The downside to geothermal energy is the

fact that it is expensive to build. On the other hand, because theearths crust continuously decays replenishing the heat, it is still arenewable source of energy.

There are three types of geothermal plantsaround.

These are namely dry steam, flash, and binary. Dry steam plants takesteam out of fractures in the ground and use it to directly drive a

turbine that spins a generator. Flash plants take on water attemperatures over 200 C, out of the ground, and allows it to boil as itrises to the surface then separates the steam phase in steam/waterseparators which runs the steam through a turbine to generateelectricity.

    17

Binary Geothermal PlantsLast, you have binary plants. Here, hot water flows through heat

exchangers and that boiling organic fluid is what spins the turbine.Once power is generated, the condensed steam and remaininggeothermal fluid from all three types of plants are injected back intothe hot rock to pick up more heat.

Geothermal plants are used operational in different parts of the globe. These are usually located in geologically unstable parts of the planet.

You can see some in Chile,Iceland, New Zealand,United States, the

Philippines and Italy. Athome, two most prominentareas for this are in the

    Yellowstone basin and innorthern California.

Aside from digging deep intothe earth, there are some

who believe we can generate power from hot dry rocks. You have to

dig 3 kilometers deep are drilled into the earth first to find these hotunderground radiogenic granite rocks. Right now, some Australiacompanies are exploring this technology.

If you were to compare the amount of energy collected fromgeothermal to solar, you still get more from the sun. Despite that, people should still use it since solar energy cannot be harnessed whenthe clouds block the suns rays from reaching the solar panels.

Geothermal energy is a green energy source just like wind,

hydropower and biofuel because it is a renewable. By maximizing itspotential, we dont have to worry about the price of oil in the worldmarket when it hit more than $140 a barrel and is now under $90 inthe world market.Start Your Own Renewable Green Energy Source

But that is not the onlything we should beconcerned about. We

Everyone knows that our planet has changed due to global warming.

We learned our lessons from Chernobyl and Three Mile Island butthis does not mean it may not happen again.

For us to do our share to protect the environment now and forgenerations to come, we have to promote alternative energy andgeothermal as a green energy source is just one of many that iscurrently available.

    How To Make Your Own

    Green Energy Source

Did you know that you can make your own electricity?

ouldnt it be great if we can produce our own green energysource? If we can do that, we dont have to pay electricalbills or gasoline anymore for our cars. While we can buy

some of the equipment, the rest will have to be done on our own.

Take solar orwind energy forexample. Wealready know

how to harnessand make it. Ifyou want tomake one, dosome researchonline and then

set up the system yourself. To have solar energy, you will need to buyan inverter, battery, charge controller, solar panels, some wires andsupport structure. The only difference with wind energy is that youneed a fan. Once you have everything you need, you can put it all

    together.

If you are not skillful, you will be happy to know that some companiessell the entire system. By buying it from them and having it installedby their experts, you are sure that there wont be any problems themoment you switch it on. There is one more thing you need before

you can use one or the two green energy sources. Before you buy thematerials or the system, make sure you have a flat area that is about ahundred square feet or so because it occupies a lot of space.

    Out of Budget?

For those who dont have the space or the budget to use these twoenergy sources, another option is to create your own biofuels.

Biofuels are used in many countries and they get it from harvestingcorn, sugar and other crops. Luckily, you dont need a farm to produceit because you can also make your own using some recycled waste.

A good example of thisis vegetable oil which

we use for cooking. Toturn this into a biofuel,

we first filter it by warming up the liquidand then filtering this

with a coffee filter. Thenext step is to remove

the water also byboiling it again at 100degrees for a shortperiod of time.

We need to know the amount of lye present in the vegetable oil andwe do this by a process known as titration. When we are done withthat, we now mix sodium hydroxide to produce sodium methoxide.

The process of converting used vegetable oil before it becomes a

biofuel takes quite awhile and it must be heated the entire time. This isdone so the fuel we produce is pure and only when this is achievedthat we give it time to cool. Just how much biofuel we make after allthe work varies but you will have an idea of how much you haveproduced since this is the one you see floating at the top. If there isstill some glycerin present, filter it again. From there, you already have

your own backyard biofuelwhich you can use and evensell to those who are just as

By making our own greenenergy sources, we makeourselves less dependent ongasoline in its various formsto power our heater, homeor car. Why dont a lot ofpeople do it? Well simply

because they dont have thetime to make it and wouldrather rely on someone elseto do it for them.

Solar Energy Is A Form Of

    Green Energy Source

Did you know that Solar Energy is the most popular and used energy in theworld?

Solar energy is a green energy source because it is a renewableand it does not cause any harm to the environment. This isachieved by converting the suns rays into electricity with the

    help of solar cells.

There are three basicapproaches how we can usethis form of green energysource namely passive, activeand by using photovoltaiccells. When we refer topassive solar energy, nothingis converted. What happensis the buildings design helpsavoid heat loss and gets themost out of day lighting.

Such a technique can also be used in homes because studies haveshown that this can reduce the heating requirements by as much as80% with minimal cost. This means you dont have to turn on the aircondition or heater that often and if everyone does that, we dontconsume that much electricity which we get from non-renewableresources.

The second approach which is active solar energy is the first way ofconverting sunlight into heat. You should know that there are certainlimits to this one and all it can do is make sure you have hot water.

The third approach is the big scale version and it can power an officeor an entire home. This is done with the help of solar cells thatconvert sunlight into electricity. The smallest ones around can be seenin calculators and watches with large ones planted over huge acres ofland.

The only limitation to thisgreen energy source is thefact that it can only

generate power when the weather is good and thesun is out. Should it rain, then nothing is collectedand converted. When thishappens, the auxiliarysystem is turned on untilthe weather improves.

Despite that, scientists and students themselves have made solar

powered cars. NASA or the National Aeronautical SpaceAdministration has sent satellites into space that are powered by solarpanels. A fully functional airport can function on its own thanks tosolar power even if it is situated in the middle of the frozen desert.

So people can see the awesome power of solar energy, did you know akilowatt of solar energy can produce 5.5 hours of electricity per day. Ifyou have more solar cells in place, naturally you will be able toproduce enough power to last several days.

Solar energy is just one form of green energy source around. Throughthe years, we have learned to tap other resources and these examplesinclude wind power, geothermal energy, hydroelectricity and biogas.

These are all safe and by using these more often, we dont need todepend on oil which is a nonrenewable resource.

To make thishappen, we haveto persuade ourlaw makers topromote the useof such resources.

    Although you

hear speeches leftand right abouttheir concern forthe environment,it is all talk andnot that muchaction. It is

something that has to change. Two countries that have increased solarusage happen to be Germany and Japan. Spain, France, Italy andSouth Korea are next in the list and where is the United States? Well,

one thing is for certain and that it is not in the top 10 despite the factthat it is an industrialized nation.

    Hydro Power

Why Is Hydropower A Green Energy Source?

hy is hydropower a green energy source? It is because we are

able to harness electrical power by converting water intoelectricity.

The use of hydroelectric power or even hydroelectricity dates back toAncient Greece and China when they installed waterwheels in rapidlyflowing rivers to turn millstones and other equipment. Years later, this

was used in the New World which is now known as North America topower saws and other equipment.

But the hydroelectric plants of todaystill use the same basic principles asthe historical waterwheel with some

variations. The difference is that weuse the force of the power to pushthe turbine which in turn powers agenerator thus generating electricity.

To make sure that there is a steadyflow of power being produced, a dam

has to be built to retain the water. Ifthere is a need for more power, thegates of the dam are opened so watercan be released. During non-peak, the gates are closed. To ensurethere is water at all times, some dams have a recovery and pumpingsystems to the water released can be used again.

There are issues with the useof hydroelectricity. Someclaim that it poses a problem

for fish and aquatic plants onboth sides of the dam.Because the flow of waterhas been altered, the nutrientrich silt which helps cropsgrow could be affected whichis exactly what happened

when the Aswan Dam was completed in Egypt.

But there are ways to fix that and the bigger picture is that power

produced from hydroelectric plants do not generate any emissions or waste which happens to be much better than operating a coal-firedpower plant.

Another Way to Generate Hydro Power

There is another way to generate hydropower and you get this formthe sea. This is also known as wave power or wave energy which useschanges in the air levels of sealed chambers to power turbines. When a

wave rises into the chamber, the rise water pushes the air out whichthen turns a generator. Once the wave goes down, air flows into theturbine and back into the chamber through doors that will close.

These chambers remain afloat on the ocean and how much power itproduces varies. A lot of these are used on the western coasts ofScotland, northern Canada, southern Africa, Australia, and thenorthwestern coasts of the United States. These systems are usuallysmall and can power a warning buoy or a small light house.

There is also tidal energy. The difference with wave energy is thatwhen the tide approaches, the water is trapped in reservoirs behinddams. When the tide drops, the water behind the dam is released thusproducing power similar to a hydroelectric power plant.

    How Hydropower Works

This can only work if you have tides that are at least 16 feet and sincethere are only a few places in the planet that can do that. Lastly, youhave ocean thermal energy. Here, you get power based on thedifferent temperatures in the water. For this to work, you need at least38 degrees Fahrenheit difference between the warmer surface waterand the colder deep ocean water. Still in the trial stage, it is used Japanand Hawaii.

Hydropower is a green energy source. It is safe to use and what is evenbetter is that it is renewable. To learn more about Renewable Energy

    Solar Powered Cars

You Can Build Your Car Powered By Solar Green Energy Source ?

ll cars are powered by gas. But with the volatility of crude oil

prices and because it is not a renewable, something must bedone before it is too late. Given that solar energy, a green

energy source is used to power a community, you can also do this on asmall scale by using the same principles to build your own car.

But what do you need to make this work?

A lot of things but the two

most important are thesolar array and thebatteries. The solar array is

vital because this is whatsused to collect the sunsrays and then converts thisinto electrical energy. There are two types tochoose from in the marketnamely the prefabricated

type and the individual kind which you set up yourself.

If you are looking for branded parts, check out either Siemens or ASEAmericas that sell terrestrial grade cells and the space grade cells. The

lower end model which can produce a significant amount of power isthe terrestrial grade version.

Proper wiring must bedone to make sure that ifone of the panels is not

working, your vehicle willstill move. If you are

worried that the voltage ofthe solar array should

match the system voltageof your motor, you shouldnot to worry because it willstill run.

    Why Batteries are so Important?

We mentioned earlier that the battery is also important because this is

where the solar energy will be stored. Your options for this are leadacid, lithium-ion or nickel-cadmium. Just how many you need to buy

will depend on your motors voltage.

When you finally have these two components, these will now have tobe connected to the motor. So you know how much juice is left inyour batteries, you will also need to install instrumentation similar tothe heads up display console on regular cars which tells you yourspeed, mileage and gas.

Dont forget to put a steering wheel, suspension, brakes, tires andhubs. You may not be able to make a car that have the same featuresas like what you see done by one of the three US automakers but justenough to be able to drive it from one place to the next.

The only cars that use solar energy so far are the ones only used inraces especially the one held in Australia from travels from the

northern part of the country all the way to the south. If this has helpedpeople realize that renewable energy is really the key to the future, thebig automakers should try tapping this technology instead of relying ofstill relying on gasoline.

But apart from solarenergy as a greenenergy source, biodieselis another alternative. This is a combination

of alcohol likemethanol and achemical process thatseparates glycerine andmethyl esters (biodiesel)from fats or vegetableoils. This can also bedone using corn andsugarcane.

Although these are not renewable, these are still considered as a greenenergy sources because it is cleaner than conventional gasoline. Thismeans you do not release harmful chemicals such as carbon monoxideinto the air which causes damage to the environment. So if you cantbuild a solar powered car, consider a different fuel alternative.
