ATV'S TIME HAS COME.The prophesy I made in the last

issue is coming true (Future Shockpg. 42). ATV has really taken off.August is typically the least activemonth with people putting their timeand money into vacations and/orgetting ready to send the kids back toschool. However, sales were thehighest in our history and 2.3 timesany previous August. Hams arefinding all kinds of different a ndinteresting things to do with ATV aswell as infecting their friends with thebug. Many new ATV repeaters wentup this summer.

RF CONCEPTS 100 WATTAMP IS NOW ATVIZED.

I have been working with KenHolladay K6HCP, RF Concepts -

Kantronics amplifier engineer, sincejust after Dayton to upgrade the rfc4-110 and 4-310 amps to work on ATV.It took the usual number of caps onthe bias and collector voltage lines,but some of the ferrite bead R Fchokes had to be changed to removethe color, sound, and high frequencydistortion. The bias droppingresistors had to be lowered alsobecause the bias voltage wasdropping out of regulation on synctips.

The values were quite critical.The chokes had to be high enough invalue to prevent low frequencyoscillations from blowing the driver orfinals (I made one driver transistor intoa crispy critter), but low enough, up to5 MHz, to allow the capacitors to keepthe supply voltages from loadingdown.

Kantronics-RF Concepts Directorof Marketing Everett Gracey WA6CBAsays that all amps shipped afterNovember 1 will have the A T Vupgrade, and those that have onethat was made before then may get itconverted for about $30. However,call Kantronics to get authorizationand actual cost before you ship yoursto them.

The rfc4-110 has a built-inpreamp that helps overcome theusual T/R relay insertion loss inreceive. In addition to the 170degree over temperature cut out,

there is a high VSWR detector that willswitch off the amp to protect it.

The amp is biased more towardclass A than most class AB linearamps found in the amateur marketwhich accounts for the 6 Amp idlingcurrent. Therefore DC efficiency isvery low until high output is reached,and a higher current capable powersupply is required. Video linearity isgood up through 60 watts out, afterthat sync stretching is necessary tomaintain sufficient video to sync ratio.The amp would key up with as little as100 milliwatts, and 1.5 watts p.e.p.(sync tip) gave just under 50 wattsoutput.

The rfc4-110 was designedprimarily with multimode 10 watt rigs inmind. The 4-310 is the same amp,without the driver stage, intended forthe 25 to 30 watt out rigs. There isalso the 4-32 which was made for HT'sand up to 3 watts in and 20 out. Thisamp did not need any modificationand in fact has been working great inmy helicopter for over a year now. I

drive it with a TC70-1 and am gettingabout 16 watts p.e.p out for 1.5 in.

Henry connected it upbetween his downconverter andRadio Shack portable TV and took itmobile. He told me it did indeed pullout the sound and even pumped upthe color at the same time in snowypictures where previously there wasno color or sound. Here is t h esolution for those with TV's that don't

get best picture with best sound insnowy conditions.

VOYAGER -NEPTUNE VHSTAPE IS FREE

JPL has made available a copy oftheir Neptune Encounter Highlightstape. All you have to do is send onesealed VHS tape to: Peter McClosky,JPL Teaching Resource Center, CS -530, 4800 Oak Grove Drive,Pasadena CA 91109.

When you write for the tape makesure that you say that you are anamateur radio operator and that youwant the tape to show over amateurtelevision to other hams in yourcommunity. The tape runs 30minutes and contains animations aswell as actual Voyager images.

The Highlights were also sentover Satcom F2R Transponder 13Oct. 2 at 1 pm Eastern time. It wasrecorded and sent that week on theSo. Calif. ATV nets. It will probably beshown again later on NASA Select.

RGB TO COMPOSITEVIDEO CONVERTERThe question of how to take a

RGB output from a computer and putit into a standard NTSC monitor or intoan ATV transmitter comes u poccasionally. Elmer ThomasWA6PFA has been using this circuit(see schematic) for over 10 years toput computer graphics on the air anduse lower cost composite videomonitors.

This circuit takes 7 IC's to convertthe red, green and blue signals tocomposite color video. 96L02 oneshots keyed from the green signalenable the 3.58 MHz color burst. The4 high speed FET op amps,LH0062's, mix the three colors in theproper ratios and provide luminanceand sync to the LM1889 TV VideoModulator.

The LC tank circuits that wouldnormally make this IC into a RFmodulator are jumpered out so thatthe output is just the mixedcomposite video which is fed to anemitter follower. Regulated + and - 5Volt DC supplies are required.

THE ATV SPECTRUMBAREFOOT, WITH AMP,AND WITH VESTIGIAL

SIDEBAND FILTER.Here is a comparison of what the

worst case spectrum looks like with aDSB and a low level generated VSB1 watt transmitter, a Mirage D26Nadded to them, and a SpectrumInternational PSF434-ATV VSB filteradded to the combination.

The FCC standards for a Vestigialsideband AM video low powertransmission can be found in Part 73.The graphs are in 73.699. None ofthe present ATV transmitter outputsrun barefoot, and especially with anamp, meet the technical definitionwithout a filter in the antenna line.

Basically the LSB video at andbelow 1.25 MHz from the carrier hasto be -20 dB and the LSB colorsubcarrier -42 dB (73.687). Anymodulation components above+4.75 MHz from the carrier must alsobe down -20 dB.

This is fairly loose, but there is acatch-all that says more may beneeded if interference occurs. Someof the LPTV transmitters can maintainthe linearity necessary to meet thisspec without an output filter (ofcourse they cost in the $10,000+area) but are required at electronicsites to prevent transmitter finalgenerated intermod.

I think the same practical commonsense approach should be done withAmateur systems. That is, eachindividual amateur should take theproper steps to insure thatemissions, that have been proven tointerfere with other users in theirarea, that are outside the normal 6MHz video passband are sufficientlyattenuated.

Each case is going to be differentwith different antenna patterns andpolarity, obstruction attenuations,power levels, what is in the videopicture, sideband intermod andharmonic product levels, etc. It hasbeen my experience that filtering hasbeen necessary if there is anothermode user within 5 miles, more if on ahill top, less with any of the naturalattenuators.

There have been complaints athamfests, but with everyone with atleast 1 HT on their hip, it is ridiculousto expect any clear channels with all

the close by power and intermods.However one should use theminimum power to do the job, andselect a frequency that will cause theleast problem.

I would suggest that hamfestorganizations coordinate thefrequencies, power, filterrequirements, and placement of anyone giving talks and demos thatweekend as much as practical. I

always use 426.25 and run 80 mW if I

only have to get around the building,or I'll use 33 or 23 cm.

To see what the worst casespectrum would look like I used100% multiburst video from agenerator. This puts out aprogressively rising burst offrequencies starting at .5 MHz andending at 4.2 MHz. Normal videowould be less modulationpercentage and random frequency.

The HP8559 Spectrum Analyzeris set for zero dB at the very top atpeak envelope power. Vertical majordivisions are 10 dB amplitude and thehorizontal major divisions are 5 MHz.

BAREFOOTThe P. C. Electronics TC70-1 has

a double sideband transmitter but themodulation scheme has somephasing to reduce the LSB soundsubcarrier. This one is down about 6dB or -24 dBc. The AEA FSTV-430has a low level SAW filter which cutthe LSB sound subcarrier down to -36 dBc, the subcarrier level variessomewhat with the video gain in thisunit.

Sideband second harmonics andIM on the TC70 is down 40 dB and 45dB or better on the FSTV-430. Thisis pretty good if you compare theequivalent adjacent channelinterference with a two tone IM testwith SSB that is typically -30 dB

p.e.p. One can talk about dB's thisand dB's that, but what does it allmean in practice?

So how far will a tenth of amilliwatt go (40 dB below 1 watt)? Toa FM repeater receiver tuned toexactly 9 MHz (2 times soundsubcarrier) from your video carrier,line of sight on a hill top, your samepolarity beam pointed right at him willbreak his carrier squelch from up to20 miles. Again, a worst casescenario. Last issue I went oversome suggestions to avoid the worstcase frequencies, and every case willbe different.

WITH D26N AMPHere the amplifiers intermod

characteristics modify the relativelevels of sideband energy. With theTC70-1 the LSB sound has come upto almost -20 dBc and the sidebandsecond harmonics to -37 dBc. TheFSTV-430 has also come up to theselevels.

The TC70-1 puts out a little morethan the FSTV-430, and drives theD26N a little harder into compression,but is close enough as a comparisonto see that any amplifiers intermodcomponent changes the actualspectrum. So the actual level givenin the barefoot example is not simplythe amplifier gain (15 dB) added butalso 3 dB more from the ampintermod in this example and will varywith each amp, VSWR, and drivelevel.

The TC70-1 has an adjustableblanking pedistal clamp to reset forthe amps high end power curvecompression. The FSTV-430 has noadjustments for external amps andshould be kept below the ampscompression level.

WITH AMP AND VSB FILTERFor those that ask if a VSB filter is

necessary on an inband repeater,take a look at all the sideband energywithin what would be the receiverspassband 12 or more MHz away withand without a VSB filter.

The filter knocks all the out ofVSB components way down at thecost of a few dB of insertion loss. It

must be put in the antenna line orelse any following amplifiers intermodproducts will regenerate them.

AM VIDEO MODULATED SPECTRUM

BAREFOOT

Each transceiver is connected to thepower meter/dummy load through adirectional coupler. The output ofthe directional coupler connects tothe HP 8559 Spectrum Analyzer andis set for zero amplitude reference atit's peak envelope power. This isapproximately 1.5 Watts for theTC70-1 and 1.0 for the FSTV-430.

Vertical = 10 dB per major division.Horizontal = 5 MHz per major division.

Each is 100% modulated with a videomultiburst with frequencies from .5 to4.2 MHz.

MIRAGE D26N AMP ADDED

Note LSB and both sidebandsharmonics increases in amplitudewith the added amplifier verses thetransceivers by themselves. Whilethe difference is more striking withthe FSTV-430, the secondarysidebands due to the ampsintermods peak power are about thesame as the TC70-1 but averageless.

WHEN SHOULD YOUUSE A VSB FILTER?Other than when an interference

problem arises, and at every ATVrepeater, I suggest taking one alongto any public service event,convention, or activity where thereare going to be many othertransmitters. Because other than thesideband harmonics and intermod,every amplifier that does not have abandpass filter in the antenna linecan generate IM products from allother transmitters on the air in theimmediate area. Your ATV antennapicks up these signals and carriesthem to your amps final transistorswhere they do the mixing.

The original 23 cm plans by SamK6VLM have been floating aroundPAGE 10

the Southern California gang indifferent forms. When the NU6Xrepeater came on 932.25 it gave theincentive to scale the antenna down.The single bays typically measure inthe 17 to 18 dBd area.

NEW BLACK AND WHITECAMERAS

The Uniden CCD cameras shouldbe available by themselves as youread this. It has taken them a while tocome out with them after theannouncement at Dayton.

The camera and monitor priceshave also come down since then,around $175 without sound (VM100)and $205 with sound (VM200).Hopefully the camera only price willbe not too much over $100.

Unfortunately the one withsound does not lend it self to ATVtransmission. It mixes a 6.5 MHz FMsound subcarrier on the video line. Areceiver in the monitor detects it.

This is fine for the two way videointercom it was designed for, but youwould not want it on the air.

I still think it might be just theticket for the R/C people where lowcrash cost is more important than lightsensitivity and resolution.

I just checked out the Koyo TVC-4000-2 camera. It uses a 2/3" vidiconand claims 600 line resolution.Sensitivity is speced at 8 lux with af1.4 lens but for some reason theoptional C mount lens listed for it isf1.6. By using both the lens andmechanical focus adjustments I wasable to get all the way down to a fewinches from a printed page.

Since this camera is made forsurveillance, there is no on -offswitch, you have to plug and unplugit. The sync is 2:1 interlace locked tothe 60 Hz line. The composite videocomes out a BNC connector. Pricerange for this camera is $200.

I am still looking for color camerasin the under $500 class, anyone finda source let me know so I can pass iton. 8 mm color camcorders havedropped down to under $700however.

ATV HAS COME ALIVE INTHE MILE HIGH CITYMaryann and I stopped by Allied

Appliance in Englewood, a suburb ofDenver Colorado, on our way to visitrelatives in Colorado Springs andcrew for a friend at the Leadville 100mile foot race last August. The ATVgang there seemed to be laying forus. Just after leaving the airport, I goton one of the local 2 meter repeatersand asked directions.

Dave NOHZY came right backwith directions and another repeaterto switch to, 146.64, that most of theATVers use. 144.34 simplex is alsoused. Tim WBOTUB took a little timeoff work to come down to the store tosay HI in person, and we saw andtalked with Bob W6ORE, and DaveW6OAL, working on another antennaidea, through the ATV repeater.

The Denver NOIVN repeater is426.25 in and 1253.25 out up on ahill on the west side of the city around7,400 feet MSL.

THINKING ABOUTPUTTING UP AN ATV

REPEATER? HERE ARESOME THINGS TO THINK

ABOUT BEFORESPENDING ANY MONEY

There is no denying the egoboost of being able to say that youput together a repeater, are theowner, or that it carries your call. Andsure you will get a lot of verbalencouragement from the localATVers for you to do it.

Most repeater owners or buildersI have talked with over the years havetold me their club or group at first wasall for it with promises of money andhelp. But when it came down to itthat help disappeared or each haddifferent ideas about how it would beconfigured or placed. It usually endsup with one or two people doing allthe work.

So the first thing I suggest is toplan it all out and then have everyonethat is going to be involved have theirpart, whether it is building something,buying a part or just giving funds,defined on paper. Discuss it all andselect a systems manager to see thateverything comes together in atimely manner, and a technicalmanager who makes sure the rightcomponents are selected and gotogether properly. Have each personinitial or sign for his part of the projectso that there is no miss -understanding months later as towho was supposed to do what andwhen.

Things will change over thecourse of the project, and as they dothe system manager can up date thetasks and keep everybody informedas to progress and what is needed.

When you nail people down likethis you quickly separate the talkersfrom the doers.

The most important decision afteryou have all the players is to selectthe repeater site. Chances are thatthe highest and best coverage spotalready has repeaters on it by otheramateurs, business, government,etc. A meeting with the site manageror owner should be set up with onlythe system manager and technicalmanager to find out the rental costs,are there U.S. Forestry or BLMpermits also required, what are thefrequencies and power output ofother systems that might be ofinterference potential, site accessrestrictions, technical requirements,antenna type and placement, coax orhardline length, rack space, etc.

Decide if you are going inband orcrossband repeat and horizontal orvertical antenna polarization. Have ameeting with your areas frequencycoordination council and discuss thealternatives with them. Coordinationis done by site and it's area ofcoverage which has the most effecton interference probabilities. Keep itfriendly and technical. It may takemore than one meeting and sometesting.

An inband will be the hardest tocoordinate due to taking up so muchspectrum. See last issue's column

about the different considerations inthe 420-450 MHz band. Take it withyou to the meeting. Remember youwill need at least 12 MHz frequencyseparation in order for the VSB filtersto do their job. I suggest 421.25output and either 434.0 or 439.25input.

Crossband has the benefits oftaking only one channel on 70cm foran input, and leaving the other forsimplex and DX. Low in and high outgives the most performance and leastcost to your users because it is veryeasy to put a preamp at the antennato save the higher feed line loss withfrequency than a transmitter andamp. All existing ATVers will have a70cm transmitter for simplex and DXand will just have to add adownconverter and antenna which ismuch less cost than a whole newtransmitter and hard line. Equipmentcosts go up with frequency.

The other benefits are usersbeing able to see their own videocoming back for more accurate videogain, lighting, and focus adjustmentsand other testing when no one elseis around. It is also easier to sell tothe frequency coordinators. Theoptimum frequencies as far asharmonic relationship and othereconomic and coordinationconsiderations is 426.25 in and1253.25 out.

As you can see there are a lot ofdetails to be worked and planned outbefore the first piece of equipment isbought. I generally tell people to planon about $2000 on the averagebefore they have a good workingmachine, and not to just try to get bywith what is in the junk box or couldbe thrown together especially if it is ata shared electronic site.

The biggest cost will be for thehard line, antennas, and vestigialsideband filters. These items will beof most interest to the site owner asfar as physical placement and anytechnical requirements. Thetransmitter, receiver, power supply,VOR and ID are actually the easiest toplace and take up the least room.

Bill Olson is the first that I know ofto offer antenna mounted preampsfor the 1200 MHz band. Besides the23LNAWP he also has them for 900and 400. I got serial number 001 tocheck out.

The MGF1302 GaAsfet is housedin a very hefty Rose Enclosuresweather proof aluminum box. Thecover seam has a rubber gasket in agroove to keep any water out.

Noise figure is specified at lessthan 1 dB and the gain at greater than10 dB (mine was .65 NF and 13 gain).

The preamp is powered thru it'soutput coax with 8 to 18 VDC @ 20mA. To protect against accidentalcoax shorts taking out a regulator, I

suggest putting a 100 ohm resistor inseries with the DC decoupling in thedownconverter to limit the current.

This preamp came at the righttime for me because I ran out of ourantenna mounted downconvertersand control boxes. The volume andpresent cost meant that I would haveto have raised the prices significantlyto make some more.

By using the standarddownconverters at the shack, and thispreamp at the antenna with 9913coax you can get about the sameimprovement in receive sensitivity.

But the biggest benefit is thatyou no longer have to tweek thetuning a little to track local oscillatormoving with the wide outsidetemperature changes, and you canoperate it all at 12 Volts in the shack orportable instead of fixed at up to 18Vdc.

The only drawback is for thosewho want to transmit on the sameband through the same antenna.There is no T/R relay system built intothis preamp. However it is not aproblem for those areas that just need

to receive the output of a crossbandrepeater or duplex.

COUPLING DC UP THE COAXTO YOUR DOWNCONVERTER

MODIFICATION

Downconverterinput Ct

Most downconverters have a DCground through a RF choke, coiltapped input, or even a resistor tobleed off any static buildup before itgets so high as to blow the preamp.To power the antenna mountedpreamp, you will need to DC isolatethe input from the preamp device andRF wise from the 12 volt source.

The above schematics show twoexamples of connecting the RFC,bypass cap (Cb) and resistor networkto the preamp stage of adownconverter. The first one has ainput series tuning cap and a striplineor wire RFC to ground. If there is noRFC to ground one will have to beadded. Cut the RFC in this case onthe ground side and connect thebypass cap with very short leadsalong with the rest of the network.The second one has an inductive tapon the input tuned circuit or a seriesinductor with a RFC to ground. In thiscase the cap (Cb) goes between theconnector and board input pad.

The value of Cb will vary with theband in use. I suggest small discceramics of 10 pF at 1200, 33 pF at

900, and 100 pF at 400 MHz. TheRFC, if not already part of thedownconverter can be made from 4turns #24 wire .1" diameter closewound.

HIGH POWER AMPSI have been bugging Bill Olson at

Downeast to get me one of the 4power module (Mitsubishi M57762)70 watt 1200 MHz Amps ever since Isaw the prototype at Dayton. But hehas been too busy cranking out hisother amps and loop Yagi's to ATVersthat, at this writing, I have not receivedit. He promises it to me within thenext month and I will report on it in thenext issue.

I did ask him if he had any info andfeedback on any other 70cm and upamps that I could pass along toATVers. Bill regularly talks to UHFersall over the country and getsfeedback just like I do from ATVers inthe normal course of business. Youmight have seen Bill's articles in theARRL QEX magazine forexperimenters. He has been aregular contributor. I highlyrecommend this League publicationby the way for the technical types andfor keeping up on the state of the artand what's available.

I got an interesting flyer from HI -SPEC (POB 387 Jupiter FL 33468,(407) 7465031) showing the tubetype amps they have for the 900,1200 and 2400 MHz bands. Theseare 1 or 2 7289 triode tube ampsavailable in just cavity form orcomplete RF Decks. They also have amatching power supply. The outputpowers go as high as 200+ watts.While I have not personally tested anyof these, Bill says they have a goodreputation.

CHANNEL 13 TVI?If you divide 426.25 by 2, it falls

within the passband of channel 13(210-216 MHz). The amount ofenergy at this frequency in ourtransmitters is about 50 dB down fromthe output. But this is enough to beseen in some cases by yourneighbors depending on antennas,placement and power.

The least insertion loss andlowest cost filter for your 70cmtransmitter, if this is a problem, is ahigh pass. Insertion loss of 5 polefilter is typically a negligible few tenthsof a dB. You could make one rightout of the ARRL Handbook (1989 pg.2-48 filter #65, divide values by 100)or use any of the 2 meter / 440antenna duplexers.

These are simply high pass/lowpass filters to a common connector.Cost is around $50 (Yaesu AD -2,Comet CF -416, Diamond MX -72D,etc). Also they can be put on a 2meter transmitter to cut down the 3rdharmonic that might be getting intoyour ATV receiver.

Broad 70cm bandpass filters suchas the Spectrum InternationalPSF432 would also work but at ahigher cost. A VSB filter would killeverything not within the desired ATVpassband but their cost is over $150.

10 GHZ ATV ANYONE?10 gig FM ATV Gunnplexers have

been used for links at the PasadenaRose Parade and just recently fromJPL to the Griffiths Observatoryduring the Voyager - Neptuneencounter. It allows getting video outof a hole when multiple hops areneeded without taking up one of theprimary used channels on the 400MHz or other bands.

DX is strictly line of sight but youcan get 10 or more miles easily withthese systems. Greater DX ispossible with the 100 mW Gunndiodes and larger dishes..

Surplus Satellite receiverswith about 35 dB of gain added aheadof it works fine. I have on my designlist a good FM receiver module madefor ATV communications links and willget with Alan when the time comes.

CAN'T AFFORD A BIRD?There are some new imported

small portable RF power meters forunder $100 that might just be theticket for those that don't want toinvest $200 for a good Bird 43 plus$55 or more per slug just yet, butneed something to set the blankingpedestal level on that new linear ampfor AN or want to make sure of theantenna system VSWR before keyingdown for a long winded OSO.

Comet has a series of Mini -metersthat cover individual bands andswitchable at 2 power levels. Forinstance the CM400N ($67.50 list)covers 410 to 460 MHz and has aswitch to give 15 or 50 Watts fullscale. The 900 and 1200 modelshave 10 and 60 Watts full scale.

Most meters are least accurate atthe low end, and this one is noexception. With 1 watt on my Bird, I

read 1.5 on the Comet. To get moresensitivity with 1 watt transmitterswhen setting the pedestal, you canturn the meter around and double theindication. 1 Watt in this case read 3watts on the Comet.

Actual power reading for pedestalsetup or verifying a low VSWR is notas important as the relative reading forpeak power indication. A double Nmale connector is handy to screw on

to the TX input side of the meter touse with the ATV transceiver or poweramp.

There are Comet models for 900to 940 MHz (CM900 at $98.50 list),1200 to 1300 MHz (CM -1200 at98.50 list) and one that covers 140 to450 MHz (CM420N at $82.95 list).These Comet mini -meters areimported by NCG Co.

Diamond has a fancier group ofpower meters, imported by RF parts,that I will report on next time. So farthe meters just have SO -239connectors, and I am waiting for theones with N connectors. I did look atone with SO -239's that covered 140to 525 MHz, 3 ranges - 5, 20 and 200Watts full scale, and a switch to giveaverage or peak readings. You canread actual power or a knob on thefront enables setting the meter at fullscale for accurately reading SWR.The model SX-400 lists at $109.95.

CM VS MHZNew ATVers are often confused

when the bands that AN is allowedon are called by different names.They may say they are on the 70centimeter band, 400 meg band,four -thirty two, four -fifty, four -twenty,or just plain four -hundred. I don'tknow what is best as far as whatshould be written in this magazine.

Actually calling it by itsmetric/wavelength band is the bestgeneral description, but in use aspecific frequency is more practical. I

usually use the metric banddescription, but in this issue I amtrying the lowest rounded offfrequency.

To find the wavelength in metersyou just have to take 300 and divide itby the frequency in MHz. Rememberthat one from your amateur test?

Oliver NOJBK and SharonNOJBG have a nice station setup inthe store and is really excited with thisnew mode. It is not unusual to findthem still at the store station afterhours during the week or weekendstalking ATV with those that drop in orcome up on the air.

Oliver says they seem to pick upone or two new ATVers every week.Most of the gang is very helpfulgetting the new people going. TheWestern Vision Network getstogether on Friday night, 8 pm on146.64 and Tuesdays on 144.34.

This repeater might be a good DXopening beacon to the midwestsince it is on such a high location witha good view to the east. While439.25 simplex is the most popular inthe midwest for DX, give 426.25 ashot and at the same time use144.34 - you might get into theDenver repeater group.

KREEPIE PEEPIE AT10,000 FT

John KB6MMF hiked all the wayto the top of Mt. Baldy in southernCalifornia to send video back down tothe bottom during the Annual Mt.Baldy Run To The Top race. He useda 1 watt KPA5 and 7 element beam.The race starts at the foot of the Mt.Baldy ski lift which is about 6000' andgoes up on trails for 8 miles to the topat 10,064 ft.

I ran (read walk and crawled) therace last year and preferred sleepingin and watching my friends do it thistime. I watched talked back to myrunning buddies on 2 meters and didget bad mouthed for being a couchpotato this time.

John KB6MMF, Bud KB6MID,and Tony WB6QHB enjoy going outin the wild and doing the unusualpublic service event with ATV.

The last three years they haveparticipated in the Angeles Crest 100Mile Endurance run and haveprovided both two metercommunications between checkpoints to keep track of all the runnerson the trails, but also video.

Video between the remotemountain aid stations was a big plusfor the runners crew and friends to beable to see as well as talk to theirrunner.

This race goes from the ski areaof Wrightwood at 6000 feet, over Mt.Baden-Powell (9300 ft.) and up anddown other mountain trails for 100miles ending at the Rose Bowl inPasadena. The runners have 33hours to complete the race and gocontinuously day and night. Someaid stations have to remain open over12 hours.

By communicating the entry andexit times of each runner to theadjacent check points on 2 meters, allrunners are accounted for in caseone of them gets lost or injured.Search and Rescue is notified if anyrunner is reported injured, lost oroverdue. Last year was especiallyhot and many runners suffered fromheat exhaustion. Amateurs wereable to cut the time down by hoursthat the individuals were found and

receive aid. One of the runners, aham running with his HT, called inreporting another runner in serioustrouble. A helicopter was dispatchedand rescuers dropped down onropes to pull the victim out from theremote mountain trail.

Video from remote aid stationsalso assist medical personnel toevaluate those who are havingproblems by seeing what they looklike as well as the description of theproblem from the aid stationpersonnel.

permission from the Tournament ofRoses Committee will be given forthe satellite feed to other amateur TVgroups as was done last year.

Dave WA6ZVE got 2 hours ofsatellite time last year that enabledmany areas of the country to see theATV operation at the Rose Parade.However, as with any big production,there is a lot of money and politics.The parade officials have to be verycareful giving permission for asatellite feed for free with all of the USand foreign networks putting out a lotof bucks.

The hams have been providingATV for the officials for 11 years, butthis problem with the satellite feedopened up a ball of snakes. Thosethat have been with it all these yearsmay not even participate this yearbecause of the hassles.

If things get ironed out, it will beannounced through some of theamateur newsletter media, or giveme a call.

Paul W8ZD has developeda very high quality set ofmatching sections for easyconnection to 75 ohm CATVhardline. First a 9/32"brass tube is cut to thedesired length for theband desired using theformula 246/f(Mhz). Usinga Dremel tool with thecutting disk make two cutsat 90 degrees to each oth-er into the end of the tu-bing. Cut 1/4" into oneend and 3/4" into the oth-er. Round the cuts to formfour fingers on each end.On the end with she 1/4"fingers bend these so thatthey make a tight fit overthe center pin of the backof a silver 'N' connector.Silver solder together us-ing a small brazing torch.(Note: Use only Silver Nconnectors with Teflon in-sulation, or the plasticN connectors will melt!)Next cut a 3/4" copperpipe to a length 1/8" lon-ger than the inner brasstube. Silver solder thispipe to the base of the Nconnector.Using a pipe cutter cut

a piece of center insula-tion from a piece of 7/8"hardline. Make this pieceabout 3/4" wide to form acompression spacer for thenext step. With a smallreamer widen the hole onone end of the spacer tak-ing care not to widen thehole at the other end. Us-ing a piece of 3/4" coppertubing pound the spacerinto the end to cut it'sdiameter down to 3/4" andremove it from the pipe.Also make a small notch inthe outer edge of the spa-cer to allow for moistureto drain out of the fin-ished section. The spaceris then placed into theend of the matching sec-tion allowing about 1/8"of the fingers on the cen-ter tube to protrude be -

This arrangement al-lows a tight connectionwith the center conductorof the hardline. One majorproblem with long runs of75 ohm hardline is thatthe center conductor isaluminum and will contractenough in cold weather tobreak connection with thecoax connector. This isnot a problem with thissection since the centerconductor can move in andout several inches with noloss of contact!Make four cuts evenly

spaced into one end of a

3/4" to 3/4" inch coppercoupler. Silver solder theother end over the end ofthe matching section.Place a hose clamp overthe cut part of the coup-ling. Paint the outside ofthe matching section andlet dry. Now expose 2 ormore inches of the innerconductor of your hard-line. Also remove the out-er insulation or coatingsurrounding the aluminumshield back 1.5". Makesure the shield is cleanedwell to remove any plasticcoating. Slide the match-ing section over the hard-line and tighten the hoseclamp. Cover the wholeworks with COAX SEAL andyou're ready to work thoserare DX stations!

modified the Archer SEG asoutlined in the January1989 issue of ATVQ, here isanother modification whichis sure to fluff your feat-hers !

Chroma-keying is the pro-cess of switching betweentwo video sources at speci-fic points during the ac-tive video scan, by usingcolor components of thepicture to generate thekey or switching signal. Toback up for a moment, youwill remember that a keysignal is generated so thata hole can be cut into theactive scan during a speci-fic horizontal and/or ver-tical position. If the swi-tching signals used to cutthis hole are "in sync" or"genlocked to the sourcevideo, then the hole canbe made with sharp and smo-oth edges, anywhere duringthe active horizontal/ver-tical scan.

These holes can be filledwith shades of grey or sol-id colors. A good exampleof this is the genlockedcharacter generator. Onecan feed a composite signalinto the generator, and thecharacters can be seen su-perimposed over the sourcevideo. This is done by us-ing a high speed switchthat switches between s our -ce video and grey tone ata very rapid rate specifi-cally line and/or fieldrate. The characters arenot actually over the sour-ce video but rather holesare cut into it which areshaped like letters.The pulses used to turn

this high speed switch onand off are called key pul-ses. These pulses can bethought of as digital innature, that is, either onor off. Imagine that if thekey pulse to the video swi-tch were off the switch

would pass source a video.If the key pulse were logichigh or on, the switch wou-ld pass source B video.

At any given point ofthe active scan on the crt,the switch must make a de-cision whether it will dis-play A or B video. Keep inmind that both video sour-ces are genlocked, so thatwhen the switch displaysone or the other, the videomonitor will only see dif-fer ing video content dur ingthe active portion of thescan, but blanking fromeither source will look thesame to the monitor becausethey are synchronous. Thatis why the monitor does notjump or flicker during the-se rapid switching inter-vals.

As you know by now, thearcher spec ial e ffects gen-erator(SEG), is a highspeed switch. It also gen-erates the key signals men -t ioned above. After modi fy-ing the unit to accept twovideo signals, the SEG willwipe or mix between the twousing the internally gener-ated keying signals. Eventhough these key signalsare thought of as digital,they are not necessarilysquare wave in terms ofduty cycle. Although a squ-are wave of a particularline and field rate willproduce a keying signalwhich will cause the switchto gate the video sourcesin squares and rectanglesas in case of split screenand corner inserts, a tri-angular wave would gate thevideo sources in triangularshapes. The Archer SEG doesboth of these.

Imagine feeding theswitch a wild and crazycombination of square, tri-angular, sawtooth, and par-abolic pulses each havingdefinite on and off point.The net effect of this

would be the creation of abunch of irregularly shapedholes cut into the A videosource with B video beinginserted in them. If theseirregular waves could beassembled and generatedwith some intelligence,these video "holes" wouldtake on almost any shapeeven the figure of a humanbeing like an ATV operator(some of the most irregularshapes known to mankind).This tutorial has led us

to one of the most excitingspecial effects in video,heretofore available onlyfor commercial use at com-me rc ialpr ices , chroma-key.As I stated earlier chromakeying uses color informa-tion to generate key puls-es. The chroma-key systemuses only blue video infor-mation to generate key pul-ses. A basic chroma-key isshown in Figure 1.

Although any color canbe used to generate keysignals, blue and green aretypical. These are highsaturation colors and bluetends to interfere lesswith flesh tones than anyother color. As seen inthe diagram, camera A isaimed at the foregroundwith a blue backdrop. Thisvideo is sent to the videoin A jack of the SEG, andalso to the RGB decoder.Camera B is sent directlyto the Video in B jack, ofthe SEG.The Blue output from the

RGB decoder is further pro-cessed by a key pulse gen-erator circuit which wewill discuss a bit later.This circuit will generatekey pulses used to switchto video B whenever theblue background is encoun-tered during the activescan portion of the pic-ture. By doing this theblue background of videoA is completely cut out of

the picture, and video Binserted in its place. Thisis how your local tv wea-therman shows you thoselarge maps of the darkclouds over Iowa. The areahe is pointing to is actu-ally a large blue squareand the SEG is Chroma-key-ing a weather map as thesource B video.

Before we go further,here are some things tokeep in mind. The colorblue you select for yourbackground must be a brightblue, evenly hued, and nonreflective. A painted sur-face is fine but it must bea regada blue as photogra-phers often use for back-drops, or a bright shade ofroyal blue, and use flatpaint. Also the backdroplighting is MOST IMPORTANT.Hot or warm lighting spotswill cause your camera toencode other than a trueand uniform blue. For in-stance hot lighting spotscaused by uneven lightingor a reflective surfacewill be interpreted by yourcamera as being of a higherluma value, and the RGBdecoder will assign it a

higher blue value than theactual blue you are using!This will cause keying er-rors based on luminancevalues rather than chroma-nance values.Commercial chroma-keyingoften uses the blue outputfrom an RGB camera. Whilemany of us have color cam-eras, few have RGB outputavailable from them. For-tunately, the computercraze of the 80's has givenus a plentiful supply ofcomposite to RGB conver-ters. This will take thecomposite video from yourcamera and separate it intoRGB analog signals. Thismethod is more prone toerror than using a RGB cam-era, but seems most appro-priate for ATV resources.The RGB decoder which is

most easily obtained andthe one KA9TGX and myselfhave used is manufacturedby Sunrize Industries anddistributed by many compu-ter dealers. This unit isadvertised regularly inpublications associatedwith the AMIGA computer. Ihave also used some surplusdecoders which work equallyas well.The interconnect system

as shown in FIG 1. usesonly two video sources. TheA source is used to gener-ate the foreground videoand the key pulse videofrom the blue backdrop. TheB source is used to gener-ate the background fillvideo. This type of inter-connect is known as a selfkey video system. To insureproper levels, a distribu-tion amp should be used atthe output of video A. Oneoutput going directly tothe SEG video A input jack,and the second output goingto the RGB decoder. Theblue output of the RGB de-coder is routed to the cir-cuit in FIG 2.The output of the key

pulse generator in fig 2 isrouted to pin 11 of IC 3 inthe Archer SEG. A conven-ient tap point for thisconnection is the low sideof pull-up resistor 128. Nofur ther modi fication to theSEG is required (other thanthat already described inJanuary 1989 ATVQ).

When building the keypulse generator as in Fig2, exact part values shouldbe used. The operation ofthe circuit is quite sim-ple. Blue output is fed tothe base of Ql through sha-ping capacitor Cl. Ql isbiased through a voltagedivider comprised of R2 andR3. R3 is used to set the"key level" to the SEG. Qlis biased so that only de-coded blue level peaks keythe switcher.

Circuit operation is

straight forward but adjus-tments are somewhat criti-cal. Once again, it is ex-tremely important to usea saturated and bright bluefor a background with evenlighting on both the fore-ground and background. Oncethis is achieved, and con-nections are made as inFig 1, adjust the SunrizeRGB decoder so that thesaturation and hue controlsare in the mid range posi-tion, the RGB switch is inthe "B" position, and R3is in its mid range posi-tion. The SEG should beset to the manual positionwith one of the wipe arrowsengaged. The wipe directionindicator should be in theH/V position. The manualpot should be fully clock-wise. At this point an NTSCcolor bar pattern generatorshould be substituted forcamera A. Adjust R1 so thata key pattern just appears.At this point camera B vid-eo will begin to appearmixed in with the colorbars. Adjust R3 so that thekeyed video from camera Bonly appears where the bluecolor bar would normallybe. If random key noiseappears in the picture,turn the saturation controlon the decoder countercloc-kwise. For most levels ofblue this pot will be fullycounterclockwise. If theedge transition appears

with the photo in fig 3.

interconnectbutsubstitut-ing an op amp to generatethe key pulses. This is agood idea and works wellhowever we have noticedthat with an op amp slewrate of 70 v/us, a delaywas noted in the key pulsegenerator. This delay wasas long as 3 us and couldnot be tolerated. The re-sult was a blue edge tran-sition on the trailing edgeof the scan.Harris makes an op amp

with a slew rate fasterthan 300v/us and if anyonehas access to these pleaselet ATVQ know how the sys-tem responds. Until thenhappy chroma-keying.John KDOLOEditors note: You cansubstitute a black andwhite source for the keyingsignal and use this as aluminance keyer rather thana chroma keyer. The differ-ence being that you wouldbe using the luminance sig-nal as the key signal ra-ther than a selected color.Henry KB9F0

The London, Ontario ATV group ispleased to announce the establish-ment of the VE3TVL ATV repeaterin London, Ontario, Canada. Therepeater is crcssband and uses PCATVR4 on 439.25 Mhz receive anda PC RTX23 on 1253.25 MHz fortransmit. The system uses a VO R-2 for key -up and an Elktronicvideo ID board. Power amp is aDowneast Microwave 2316PA with18 watts to a Lindsay TZU anten-na. Output is horizontal with 8.2db gain on rx and tx. Audio linkis 145.670.

VE3TVL is the first ATV repea-ter to use the Lindsay TZU 1255Mhz version antenna. There are 21users at present. Most use a PCTVC12G and Tonna 23 elementyagi. Repeater owners went to theextra expense of going horizontalas all local ATV'ers are alreadyhorizontal. Crosdoand operationwas mandated because of thesmaller UHF spectrum available inCanada. Also 900 Mhz s currentlynot available in Canada. TNX VE-3ZK, Jim "Diz" DeZorzf.

OREGON GETS ATV FREQ!The saga of MV in Oregon

seems to have finally gotten ahappy ending. Ed Millnick reportsthat he is now president of anewly formed ATV Association(OATVA). He reports that after along summer battle with the localFC, Oregon ATVers have 426.25MHzas a statewide frequency for bothsimplex and repeater input. Repea-ter outputs will be in the 1.2 GHzband. He reports that now thatthe controversy has ended that

ATV NEWSgrowth and enthusiasm are nowrapidly growing.

DAVENPORTATVQ travels just about every-

where. Henry, KB9F0 visited thePeoria Super-fest which was greatas usual. A large contingent ofDavenport area ATV'ers droppedby with the latest news. The Dav-enport ATV repeater club (BRATS)has reportedly had several changesfor the better. Phil N9ZK is nowpresident. Mike WBOQCD took hisequipment and left the repeatergroup reportedly after severalarguments with other members. Therepeater lost its home at St. Am-brose University, but was savedwith a better location at Channel6 KWQC TV with a 100 foot higherantenna site by WBOBIZ John Hage-man, chief engineer at channel 6.The club reports increased atten-d.Ance at meetings and increasedon -air activity.

Seen on the air is a new ATVsignal from about 40 miles northof Davenport. It was reported thatWBOQCD and another ham havestarted a "by invitation only" ATVrepeater club. The transmitter hasbeen seen on 434, 426.25 and427.25 Mhz. It is reported to bean un-attended beacon which op-erates from a timer and battery.The video is a familiar Coco bul-letin board with information aboutthe new proposed repeater. ATVQwas unable to reach WBOQCD forcomment or further info.

YORKBill WB8ELK and Henry KB9F0

were at the York, PA hamfest andATV symposium. Hurricane Hugoput a damper on the hamfest sat-urday but the weather sunday wasperfect. The Saturday night ATVsymposium was sold out. Thehomebrew contest drew a substan-tial number of entries and lastminute donations by Bill and Henryprovided prizes for ALL entrants!Also a drawing was held for allattendees for an Elktronics videoID board donated by Bill.

Mobile ATV operations broughtmobile ATV QSO's with severalATV'ers in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsyl-vania including a mobile to mobilecontact! Best DX was 50 miles

over two mountain ranges to Mec-hanicsburg area ATV'ers includingan exciting tunnel emergence andtemporary air -borne operation!Stations worked while mobile in-clude N8EWV, W8ANU, KD8PE, KA8-FUZ, N8KPS, WA8SVO, W8PKC,K8UHM, N8EVV, W8ANN, W3QNI,K3IBD, W3TTL, WA3USG, W3SST,to name a few!

ATCOCentral Ohio was not neglected

as Henry managed a visit to themonthly ATCO picnic/show & tellin Columbus sunday afternoon.About 60 ATV'ers and family werein attendance with 2 meter andATV talk-in/view-in. Henry operat-ed his ATV mobile station (100watts and a 20 element circularpolarized yagi!) which was also hisshow & tell entry. Over 20 entrieswere on display. The YL's provideda great picnic lunch for which allwere thankfuL

NEPTUNEThe Chicago ATV repeater, PATC,

operated for the 7 days of NASAfly -by of Neptune. The SatelliteNASA select video was relayed tothe repeater which operate with6 KW ERP, omni vertical. In addi-tion to ham reception reports areaRadio Shack stores tuned TV setsto the repeater output for in-storepromo of ham radio/TV and toattract customers! One local ap-pliance/TV store had 186 TV setsat one time fed from their centralantenna feed and a downconver-ter for the morning NASA dailysummary show. This is a great wayto promote ham radio as morethan just disaster communications!Get on TV and get noticed! Anix-ter-Mark antenna Corporation alsosent a reception report and aninquiry about ATV.

This prompts us to suggest thatANY ATV'er could do likewise.When doing a public service orNASA relay, contact your localTV stores and get them to displayyour video. MOBILE ATVLooking for quick and easy mo-

bile ATV? Well you don't have tohave a big antenna like KB9F0,but here is a list of simple thingsto do to make it easy. RadioShack makes an "industrialstrength" type velcro. This stuckto the top and bottom of an ATVrig (anything under 3 pounds) letsyou "stick" your rig to the dash.Now velcro a box holding yourElktronix video ID with an addedPC Electronics VO R-2 for automat-ic video ID to the bottom of theATV rig. Finally, the Radio ShackPortavision 22 pocket color TV canbe "stuck" to the car as well. TheR/S color TV tunes directly downto 420 Mhz covering all the popu-lar MN frequencies with NO modi-fications! Using the UHF tuningyou can monitor your off-air sig-nal to adjust camera, etc, andusing the VHF tuning, take yourdownconverter output to the ex-ternal antenna jack to receive

We used a cheap RCA CCDcolor camera (the type used witha separate recorder) and morevelcro to hold it to the dash forthe video source. Once all the ad-hesive strips are in place you canmount or strip the gear from thecar in about 60 seconds! Spadelugs connect all the DC cables toa power block wired with jumpersto provide multiple outputs of +12and heavy cable to the car bat-tery. The D100NATV (1 in 80-100out) Mirage amp was cooled witha small R/S DC fan. The Miragemounting "fins" were turned up-side down to be over the heatsink and the fan corner holes(muffin type) mate on the diago-nal. The small fan keeps the ampcool for HOURS of operation. TheBIRD 43 showed 50-60 watts onblack video (depending on enginespeed) even with the 200 watt 2

meter rig in transmit. (Henry doesnot believe in QRP mobile!) A

phone list of ATVers and a cellularphone helped dig some stations outof the woodwork and also to findstations not operating on "stand-ard" midwest 2 meter frequenciesof 144.34 or 147.45. It wouldreally help to get more activityon ATV if every group made its

2 meter frequency known or movedto a common frequency or two!Especially during band openings.

NEW MAGAZINERADIOSCAN is a new ham radio

magazine published by Luis Gime-nez. The magazine is in spanishand is a high quality production.One of the regular features is anATV column by Armando Fernan-dez KA4GAQ. So far each issuehas had a different topic ofinterest.

Other regular topics are gener-al interest items, RTTY, DX, FAX,AMTOR and other "special modes.The overall Magazine compares toHam Radio, CQ or QST with about72 glossy full color pages. NEWBURGH, NYJim WB2WLN reports that local

activity in the Newburgh, NY areamonitors 147.45 simplex with ac-tivity nights every Mon and Wedsaround 9pm. The WB2WLN ATVrepeater has an input on 439.25Mhz and outputs on 426.25 verti-cally polarized. There are about6 active ATV'ers in the New burgh -Poughkeepsie area.

ST. PETERSBURG, FLRed WA4GRK reports that acti-

vity can be raised on ATV bycalling on 144.900 Mhz. Also Redmonitors 144.120 and 144.200 SSBfor those rare 900 mile plus ATVcontacts with Texas. ATV is usu-ally on 439.25 and is horizontal.Active stations in the St. Pete -Tampa area are WB4BLU, WA4ZAA,KF4JU (Also on 1288 Mhz ATV),K4QXX, N4EHN, K4DAV, K4DTZ,WA4CHA and WA4WKO.

EUSTACE, TEXASJay KB5CCA notes that his ATV

repeater is operating with 910.25input / 426.25 output verticallypolarized. The repeater is located65 miles SE of Dallas and westof the Tyler area. There are about11 active ATV'ers and call them-selves the East Texas WeatherWatchers. They link up the WXradar from the W5KPZ Tyler ATVrepeater and also can link up tothe Dallas radar. Calling frequency

is 147.02 (+600) repeater and also144.34 Mhz simplex.

NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINTOP EXPIDITION

Early August of this year DonK4SA0 and Edgar KC4CTW tooktheir 50 Watt ATV station up to6200 foot Roan Mountain on theNorth Carolina/Tennesee border.With the help of some early mor-ning band enhancement many longrange contacts were made withATV'ers in Ohio between 270 to350 miles away. Tom WA8ZAH andMel KA8LWR worked 2 -way withDon with pictures approaching P3

or better at times. Bill WB8YIF,Bill W8DMR, Dick W8RVH, JohnN8GWE, Bill WB8ELK and Jack WA8-JLB all made two meter contactsand observable sync bars. Donreports that he will make otherexpeditions with the success ofthis trip and will improve his an-tenna arrangement. WA4ADG BALLOONOn Aug. 5, a balloon was flown

to celebrate Man's first walk onthe Moon from Oak Ridge, TN.The package called PARAKEETwhich stands for Packet -EquippedAir craft-signalli ncjteconnaissance-performing Amateur radio KeyedElectronically for Elevated Trans-missions). Carl Lyster WA4ADG

built a flight computer and a

digitized voice and packet messagewhich was relayed out on 2 me-ters on 144.34. The 30 secondvoice message consisted of Presi-dent Kennedy's address to startthe goal of landing a man on themoon followed by a packet beaconand Neil Armstrong's famous wordsas he stepped on the moon. Afterthis sequence a one minute CWtelemetry message was sent outon 28.866 Mhz. Also included wasan ELT transmitter to provide atracking signal for the Civil AirPatroL (Carl left the ELT on af-ter the aborted first attempt andended up with a whole contingentof the CAP on his doorstep a

HENRY 2004 ON ATVby HENRY RUTH KB9FO

The seatuli Luc highpower for ATV has foryears been a problem.Narrow band modes such asSSB and FM are very easyto amplify to respectablepower levels. Numerousarticles in QST and othermagazines featuring theuse of 4CX250 type cir-cuits or 8874 tubes abo-und. The most famous ofwhich is the K2RIW ampwhich uses 2, 4CX250's inparallel. With a goodpower supply these willeasily supply 400 wattsand up of RF for FM, SSB(up to a KW if you pushit) and make your Bird 43peg in happiness. But in-troduce a wide ATV signaland the power is typical-ly 100 watts (average)and the bandwidth is sorestricted that its dif-ficult to impossible toget good color or subcar-rier sound through. Ifyou lightly couple to getbandwidth, the powerdrops even more. TwentyDB of reduction at 4.5Mhz is not uncommon inthese designs.For those lucky enough

to have the bux, there isan answer. The Henry2004, at $1595 (with coaxrelay) plus shipping is ahefty "toy" for theshack. But the Henry ampdoes work well, after a

few mods.Mine arrived last year

and has been in use forabout 8 months. The uniteasily put out over 1 KWin FM and SSB using a

3CX800 tube. When I triedvideo, the average was adismal 200 watts (600peak of sync). I triedevery adjustment and eventried massive input power(80-100 watts) only towipe out the tube withexcessive grid power. The

3CX800 has a gold platedgrid. If you overdrivethe amp, even for a shorttime, the gold will evap-orate and deposit on thecathode and kill the ca-thode emission. A $400mistake. Others with theamp have had the sameproblem (also losing a

few tubes in the processof discovery) and alsonoted the inability toreally "peak" the tuningat 439.25.The plate load control

is inside the main chas-sis and is a screw on thetop of the RF deck. Thispushes a "flapper" buttoncloser or farther fromthe plate line. The tun-ing is from the front andthere is a front panelgrid tune knob.Although 600 watts peak

of sync is OK, it seemeda little high on a dollarper watt cost basis atnearly $3/watt. Testswere also run using my430-450 FM/SSB equipmentand it showed that theresponse was narrow, typ-ically -1 db at .5 Mhz.Bruce Brown WB4YTU sentme a multi -burst genera-tor and I ran a number oftests on my station whichwas a PC TC-70, Alinco 20watt amp, Mirage D1010NR-/ATV and the Henry 2004feeding both a KW ratedcommercial dummy and the4 88 element J -Beams at60 feet. Response wasdown about 3 db at 2.5Mhz and 6 db at 4.5 Mhzand 14 db at 5 Mhz fromcarrier. This was withthe rear panel mountedband-pass filter removed.With the filter in thepassband was about 1.5Mhz at 3 db and 10 db at3 Mhz.So step one was to re-

move the bandpass filter.The amp still did not"tune" well. Well, set

the project away for ano-ther day. Then in a QSOwith Jeff KAWGX in Lafa-yette who uses the sameRF deck. He had also no-ted the same problem. Theband was HOT, P5 noisefree pix over the 130mile path in full colorwith the preamps OFF! Sothe grand experiment.Band conditions werestable so I took Jeff'ssuggestion and tried his"cure." Removing the topof the RF deck (practicefrom tube replacement)gains access to the plateload "flapper" cap. Thisis just a metal platebent at about 45 degreesfrom its soldered mount-ing point on the RF con-nector. The screw movesthis up and down, but itfollows an arc, pivotingat the bend which is nearthe RF connector. By ad-ding a bend a little far-ther out and removingmost of the originalbend, you can make thisflapper move more perpen-dicular to the plate linereducing the coupling.Use care as there arescrews and the box towhich the link platecould arc if you go tofar. The idea is to getabout the same distanceas originally made butthe flapper button is nowparallel rather than til-ted to the plate line.Put it back together andEureka!Now the screw adjust-

ment has a definite peakin its adjustment. Poweroutput went up 100 watts(both peak and average).Jeff reported much stron-ger color and the unitseemed to tune much bet-ter.Now the tests. With the

amp tuned to 439.25 usingthe FM rig, I switch tothe ATV rig (start with

couple of hours later.)

At 7:30am the balloon was laun-rhed and headed up to it's finalaltitude of nearly 90,000 feet. Twoweeks earlier a voltage regulatorfailure had scrubbed the missionand resulted in the lass of thehelium in the balloon. Since theballoon had been inflated oncebefore, it developed a bulge whenit was filled...it seemed to workjust fine but certainly lookedstrange!

At maximum altitude the signalwas heard as far away as 428miles at which point the balloonburst and the payload headed backto earth. The Civil Air Patrol(CAP) was tracking the balloonthroughout it's flight and providedcontinuous latitude and longitudereadings. The CAP actually caughtup with the package as it descen-ded through 10,000 feet and flewalong with it watching it land inthe top of a very large tree onthe southwest edge of Knoxville.It took several hours to attemptto retrieve the package. Finallythe power company was called anda cherry picker truck was used tolift a man with a 20 foot pole tosnag the package. Dave N4HBO hadattached a Kodak Disk Camera tothe side of the package with atimer circuit to take a pictureevery 5 minutes. However, only afew of the pictures had much re-cognizable detail possibly due tomoisture or frost on the lens. Sendyour reception reports for a spe-

FM so there are no side -bands from video, subcar-rier etc) and took somepower measurements. Bestpicture reports were at400 watts average (upfrom 200) and color wasmuch stronger and presenton both sides. Back tothe FM rig. The knownpower roll -off of theD1010 and Kenwood areknown to me so the amountof drive variance wasable to be taken into ac-count. Going from 440 to436 Mhz produced the fol-lowing results:

Different tuning of theplate load/tune will varythe results you get be-cause as you reduce theloading the bandwidthwill increase but abso-lute power should de-crease. I was able to geteven flatter response bysetting the output loadso that the maximum powerout was at 600 watts (ca-rrier only) but not muchmore improvement at 500watts. Grid current isvery sensitive to tuningof the plate and you needto watch it carefully. Aslightly negative current

is OK and both Jeff's ampand mine have this undersome conditions of videoand plate tuning. I fi-nally left mine at 0 gridcur rent.

If you have too muchgrid power (current) theamp will not be stableand goes into thermalrunaway. This is seen asa creeping increase ingrid/plate current whicheventually peaks out whenyour grid melts! On myunit, a maximum of 100 onthe grid meter (fullscale is 400) is aboutmaximum I can operate andbe stable. Using the TC-70 to the D1010 producesabout 50-65 watts peak ofsync as drive. If I drivethe D1010 to full output(130 watts) the 3CX800will over heat in lessthan 10 seconds.The only other problem

with the amp is that itruns HOT. My next projectis to add a fan to theback to force air pastthe power supply resis-tors which throw off a

lot of heat. I was alsoconcerned with the smallfan on the tube, but itworks! I would have desi-gned it with more CFM toget a cooler operatingtube. There is some ther-mal drift on long key -

down (say after 5 min-utes) which requires a

minor re -tune. Typicallythis is about 50 watts inpower change. The D1010is even worse, so if youlike long key -down ATV(typically a half hour)get the repeater versionof the D1010 for the bet-ter heat sink.

Also, both of my D1010 -'s were modified for lowdrive power by remo-vingthe input pad which wasdescribed in ATVQ vol 2 #

JULY 23RD BALLOON FLIGHT"ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN . . . ONE GIANT LEAP

In commemoration of the 20thanniversary of the first lunarlanding an ATV balloon was launc-hed from the Neil Armstrong Airand Space Museum in Wapakoneta,Ohio, Neil's hometown. Thanks tothe efforts of John Z wez, themuseum manager, we were ablP tocoordinate the flight as part ofthe ongoing weekend activities. AnATV receiver was set up as partof the special event ham stationinside the museum to allow thepublic to watch the balloon headto the edge of space.

This was the most intricate ofthe ATV payloads to date. Thepackage carried a 2 meter FMtransmitter (a whopping 42 mil-liwatts!) which sent out a CWmeocage and an ATV system whichconsisted of a small SONY HVM-302 B/W camera pointing out theside of the package with a mirrorpointing down towards the earthbelow. In addition to the live,camera two computer ID screensdepicting the space museum andthe lunar landing were displayedby an Elktronics video ID everyfew minutes. Through the effortsof Bob Rau N8IYD the flight com-puter he uses for his model rocketpayloads was modified to displaytwo lines of telemetry superim-posed directly over the live cam-era video. This system displayedour callsigns and the mission elap-sed clock on the first line oftelemetry and altitude, outsidetemp, internal temp and batteryvoltage on the second line. The 1watt ATV transmitter was a P.C.Electronics KPA5 (Kreepie-Peepie)and the antenna was a Big Wheelconstructed by Norm WV7K. Thiswas all housed in a 1.5 inch thickstyrofoam package painted blackto help keep things warm.

The balloon was launched onJuly 23rd at 1:42pm from themuseum parking lot just before theR/C airplane show and flew di-rectly over the more than 400spectators present. Spectacularviews of the museum and the townof Wapakoneta could be seen asthe balloon ascended at 1000 feet-/minute. A few puffy clouds were

seen passing by at 5500 feet andcould be seen getting smaller andsmaller as the balloon left theclouds far below. The flight com-puter display provided us with themost detailed telemetry of anyflight thus far and dramaticallydemonstrated that even though itwas over 100 degrees on theground it is below -71 degrees at50,000 feet! Apparently ourinsulation was working as it nevergot below 73 degrees inside. Thebig wheel antenna provided uswith a very omni-directionalhorizontal pattern as there wereno sharp fades in the ATV signalthroughout the flight. After nearlytwo hours the balloon had reachedan indicated altitude of 133,900feet. At this point the MV signalwas received as far west as Iowa(KAOJAW -380 miles) and Missouri(KDOLO & WBOZJP - 360 miles) andas far east as Mechanicsburg, PA(WA3USG - 400 miles). RickWA3USG was net control on 7.155Mhz and logged reception reportsfrom 16 states and Canada.Suddenly the balloon burst and thepayload started its wild return toearth on its parachute. Droppingover 7000 feet/minute in the nearvacuum the package started spinn-ing wildly. Tom WA8ZAH made thecomment "Looks like they pulledthe plug and it's going down theDrain!". As denser air wasencountered the package slowedits descent to about 1000feet/minute. At 36,000 feet theflight computer's reset switchdecided to short out and killed thetelemetry. Shortly after that thepackage went through a largecloud and fogged up the mirror.Only blurred images of farmhousescould be seen just before impact.

Now the fun began! Severalchase vehicles with directionfinding equipment had beentracking the balloon throughoutthe flight wandering the Ohiocountryside. Randy WA8GAU andJon WM8W were only two milesaway when it landed. Randy hasa phased array on the roof of hiscar with a mast pole he can turnfrom the drivers seat. Jon WM8W

FOR A BALLOON!"was in the back seat plotting thecoordinates on the mapping tahlPand holding a four element twometer beam out the window. The42 mW signal disappeared on thephased array but a weak signalwas heard on the beam. Shortlythe cornfield was located and asearch was made with a loopantenna crashing through the rowsof tall corn. Randy and Jon wand-ered in circles for nearly 30minutes chasing reflections in thejungle of corn sometimes comingwithin 100 feet of the package.These two weren't a pretty sightafter being slashed by the sharpcorn leaves and covered by alayer of corn pollen! To top it alloff Jon discovered he was veryallergic to the pollen! Meanwhile,Larry WB9YAJ and Bernie KB9AWSmade their approach from downthe road and wandered for awhilein a woods battling off the giantkiller mosquitos. After nearly beingeaten alive he emerged into a soybean field and found the packagelying just three feet inside theadjacent cornfield (Larry hasbecome an ace balloon tracker andnow has two finds to his credit!).Mel KA8LWR, Jeff KA8WLV, JoeWB8MSJ, Mark KA9SZX and myselfstarted in from the east andattempted to crass a river (manya wet tennis shoe here!)...just aswe got acres we saw movementon our TV screens and saw Larry'sshoe and then a smiling face star-ing into the balloon camera..Weknew the package was safe.

The balloon had travelled 21miles to the northwest and landed8 miles southwest of Delphos,Ohio. My computer predictionbased on radiosonde wind data hadindicated 21.9 miles to the north-west missing by less than a mile.Next time I'll trust my computerand stand there with a net! 73'sBill - WB8ELK

August found the roving ELK -MOBILE heading towards the north-east in search of more mobile ATVcontacts. Art W8YOS helped usstart out our adventure with anenjoyable two-way TV contact aswe drove by his home in Mentor,Ohio (Cleveland area). Art showedus the advantages of living nearthe shore of Lake Erie with ademonstration of a lake effectband opening. As long as we stay-ed near the lake we were able tosee a P3 picture from him as faras the toll -gate on the New YorkThruway over 120 miles away!

SPRINGF&LD, MANumerous 2 way QSO's were

made on ATV as we drove downthe Mass Pike towards Boston. Inthe Springfield, MA and northernCT region there are many activeATV'ers. Contacts were made withBob WB1HAB, and Chet W1HGJ inthe Springfield area, John WA1IA0and Russ K1LRB in Hartland, CT,and WAlUQC and KAlLYF nearHartford. The W1NI ATV repeateris located 600' above terrain onthe channel 61 tower and shouldprovide great coverage over north-er CT and southern MA. Input is434 Mhz and outputs on 421.25Mhz horizontally polarized. Talkfrequency is 144.34 Mhz simplexin the area and usually is a netnight on Thursdays at 8pm. Someof the active stations in the areaare AC1T, NA1W, KA1TBS, N1FQF,W1FVO, W1NYP, N1AGV, WA1HFF,WA1RKS, W1RJA, WA1FCK, N1GAUand KB1RP.

ON THE ROAD (The NORTHEAST)BOSTON, MA

Give a call on the 145.29 repea-ter when in the northern part ofBoston. This will usually net youone. of the active ATV'ers. Con-tacf_s were made with Gene W1-VRK, Red KICKS, and Mel W1BHDamong others as we drove alongthe 495 towards Maine. The KA1-AFE ATV repeater is located nearNorth Andover on top of BostonHill about 18 miles north of Bostonand has an input on 434 Mhz aswell as 911.25 Mhz and outputs on421.25 Mhz vertically.

in Grafton, NY east of Albany. Judhas a impressive array of dish an-tennas scattered all over hisplace. He has a 10 foot dish forATV mounted on top of his Rotat-ablP tower. He has a prop pitchmotor at the base of the towerwhich turns the whole works dishand all. In the back yard he hasa 28 foot dish he's going to mounton a dump truck drive shaft to

rotate. Also he has a 60 foot dishhe is ready to assemble when hecomes up with a way to mountit! Jud lives up on high ground andmay be able to make some goodDX contacts on ATV. In the Albanyarea there is a net on Thursdaynights at 9pm on the calling fre-quency of 146.49 Mhz. A contactwas made with Bill W2MTE in theAlbany -Schenectady area. Bill hasbeen active in covering ptthlirevents such as road races withATV and has involved a number ofthe locals ATV'ers in this activity.Another place to find the localsis on the 146.835 (-600) repeaterwhich is on Jud's QTH.

Most who have heard my"speech" at MV gatherings knowthat I am very involved in promot-ing ham radio with the use of HAMTV. This is based upon a simplepremise: If commercial televisionis the most powerful advertisingmedium, shouldn't ham TV be thebest way to demonstrate and mar-ket ham radio? There is NO modewhich cannot be shown on HAM TV.Try showing TV on CW or SSB!The public is already become videosavvy. The emergence of compu-ters, video games, video effects inmovies and science fiction, homevideo cameras VTR's and the bur-geoning home video market all aidin making the public aware ofvideo. Ham TV should be at theforefront of any effort to attractthis ready made audience which isnow video acceptable. The publicis now embracing video as neverbefore, what better time to useham TV to market the other andall aspects of ham radio as a hob-by, service, and fun activity!Others have been equally activelocally as ATVQ's national efforts.

area ATV'er was able to get theprestigious Chicago Tribune todevote the front page and portionof a second page of its TEMPOsection to ham radio. The articleby Clarence Peterson covers allaspects of ham radio as well asATV. A live ATV QS0 betweenAngelo and N9AB, Andy, also of theChicago area was a feature itemof the article. A good portion ofthe article cliscues public serviceand how even handicapped personscan become hams. Hats off!

WESTERN WASHINGTON ATSAnother active group (Read our

big surprise later this issue) is theWWATS based in the Seattle area.Bob KC7QR is featured in a FRONTPAGE article in the Everett, WAHERALD. Bob went ATV mountaintopping with his ATV gear withreporter in tow.The portable set-up including a small AC generatorprovided 30 watts of video RF atgood altitude to provide 100 mile+ ATV. The article describes theATV QSO activity which was bothlive and video tapes, some shot

moments before, with two wayexchanges with several area ATVersin WA and BC. The article contin-ues with the public service func-tions and several ideas for futureATV uses. All in all a great storyto gain publicity for ATV and HAMRADIO- -using ATV!

Ernie Williams WB6BAP andfriends set up a link from the JPLvia a portable repeater in Pasadenato the Griffith Observatory locatedin the Hollywood hills above LA.The link relayed the NASA Neptunevideo. John Mosley, head of pilhliceducation at the Observatory serv-ed as moderator to the puhlic atthe Observatory. John also writesthe scripts for regular planetariumpresentations. Phil Smith WB6LQPset up the originating equipmentat the JPL. Phil organizes the RoseParade PSA ATV effort. The linkfrom the JPL was on 10 Ghz to arepeater 4.5 miles away at MutualSavings of Pasadena. 23 cm wasused to relay from the bank roofto the observatory. A second out-put on 426 Mhz feed Santiago PeakATV repeater 50 miles away.

Picture received at Griffith Observatory was seen and en-joyed by the 2 million a year visitors. Here, the picture isdisplayed by a rear video projection system. The video alsowas projected onto the planetarium dome with John Mosleyexplaining the various pictures.

Video transmitted from JPL on 10.28 GHz FM, was receiv-ed 4.5 miles away here and retransmitted on 1289 MHz AMand 426 MHz AM so that the Voyager H - Neptune encountercould be seen all over southern California.

RULES OF THE CONTESTAll licensed amateur radio operators are eligible to win except members and families of the WesternWashington Amateur Television Society (WWATS), Amateur Television Quarterly Magazine (ATVQ), or publishersor staff of any other ham radio magazine. That leaves about a half million US hams and any other hamin the world!

Your video tape should be about ham radio (any aspect) and have been made since May 1988. The tapemust not exceed 15 minutes in length. You cannot use professional video equipment (3/4", 1") in yourproduction chain, only consumer grade equipment ie S -VHS, VHS, Beta, 8mm, Super Beth, etc.

Only one entry per licensed amateur please. Video must be amateur radio related and can be adocumentary, educational, technical or entertainment.

Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, technical merit and effective use of the video medium.Contestants must be original producers. Violation of copyright laws is prohibited and disqualifying.

Winners will be selected by the WWATS appointed judges. Their decision is FINAL. No substitution ofprizes or exchange for cash value allowed. The hydraulic cylinder works well as a pneumatic actuator andin use air volume is very small, 40 psi is all that is requiredfor actuation. Air can be supplied from a small compressor of thetype used to inflate tires. I used two air lines running up to thecylinder, although one line and a electric operated valve mountedat the mast could be used. This configuration has been very handy,for local contacts vertical is needed, for dx push a button andyou have horizontal.

A single IC and the PC Electron-ics TVG 12 A oscillator make avery low cost 1.2 Ghz (23 cm)exciter unit. For about $49 thephase lock loop exciter can beassembled. The TVG 12A can bepurchased from PC Electronics andthe SP -5060 IC from any supplierwho represents Plessey Semicon-ductor.

The basic PLL principle is showsin the figure 1. Some additionalcircuit elements need to be incor-porated into the PL configuration.The two inputs to the phase com-parator or phase detector shouldbe of the same frequency range.Let the stable reference frequencybe 4.9152 MHz and let the voltagecontrolled oscillator (VCO) frequen-cy be 1258.2912 MHz as an ex-ample to understand fixed modulusfrequency synthesizers. Some fre-quency division must be done ifthe two inputs to the phase com-parator are to be about equal.

Downconverters are used toscale the inputs to the comparatorto the same frequency range. Thephase comparator and the down -converter are part of the SP -5060IC. The phase comparator needsonly to perform at the low fre-quency of approximately 4,800 Hz.The SP -5060 has a reference fre-quency upper limit specified atabout 8 Mhz. Each of the down -converters may be partitioned intosections that are powers of two.The first section of a counter mustperform at the highest operatingfrequency, therefore special cir-cuitry and higher currents arenormally needed. A counter placedbefore another counter is referredto as a pre -scaler.

Although the SP -5060 was de-signed for use in a satellite TVreceiver, the IC along with a VCOforms a complete phase lock loopsynthesizer. Only one externaltransistor is required to drive thevaricap diode. Three passive com-ponents are needed for the loopfilter. A more detailed block dia-gram shows the SP -5060 internalfunctions. The IC operates with +5V DC and draws about 50 ma.

The output frequency of theVCO will be 256 times the crystal

oscillator reference frequency. Theexciter Rf output into a 50 ohmload is a minimum of 50 mw whichis ample to drive a SC -1043 brickamplifier to 5 watts or more.

The phase comparator does itall. If the scaled frequency of theVCO does not match the scaledfrequency of the reference anerror signal is produced at theoutput of the comparator. Theerror signal increases or decreasesdepending on whether the scaledVCO frequency is higher or lowerthan the scaled reference frequen-cy. The error signal is then ampli-fied and filtered (smoothed) andconnected to the input of theVCO.

A charge pump sends the errorsignal to the loop amplifier. Acharge pump can supply current toa circuit element or it can with-draw current from the same circuitelement. It is much like adding ordraining water from a bucket, soto speak. And since a bucket canstore water, the charge storingelement is the circuit is usually acapacitor.'

If the phase of the signal de-rived from the reference crystalis the same phase of the signalderived from the VCO, then theerror signal (except for a constant)is considered zero. If the loopamplifier gain is high as soon asthe error signal starts to increase,the VCO is requested to make theneceocary frequency correction andreduce the error signal to a lowvalue. The loop is then consideredphase locked.

The schematic diagram includesthe video amplifier and the pre -emphasis network for modulatingthe TV 12A with either AM or FM.The video amplifier is required tocompensate for the 13.5 db attenu-ation of the pre -emphasis network.The network must be driven froma 75 ohm source. The network mustalso be terminated into a 75 ohmload. The pre -emphasis will not becorrect otherwise.

The FM video gain pot on theTVG12A needs a 330 ohm resistorconnected in parallel to provide a75 ohm network load. Don't skipthis simple task. Adding another

330 ohm resistor across the AMvideo gain pot provides equal load-ing for the video line driver.

If the 18 uH choke has, forexample, two ohms of internal DCresistance, then the series resistorshould be 18 ohms and not 20ohms. The total DC resistance ofthe' inductor and the resistorshould be 20 ohms. The correctfrequency response will not beobtained otherwise.

Located in the IC is a darling -ton emitter follower with pin 7 asthe output. The external transistorQ3 and the internal emitter fol-lower together form the DC looperror amplifier.

The filter components Cl, C2,R2 are connected in the path fromthe output of Q3 to pin 8 of theIC. Pin 8 is the input to the Dar-lington emitter follower. The out-put of the current pump is inter-nally connected to the input of theDarlington emitter follower. Pin 8is effectively the summing junctionof a simple op -amp configuration.Because there is NOT an inputsumming resistor the amplifierperforms as a current to voltageconverter. The charge pump sup-plies the current input to the lowinput impedance of the formedop -amp. The signal level at pion8 ius low because of the natureof the summing junction acting asa virtual ground.

The phase lock loop includingthe filter forms a second orderoperating system. One purpose ofthe filter is to smooth out theripple variations introduced by thephase detector. The amplifier andpassive element combination froma filter with medium gain and lowpass filter characteristics.

RANI -CL I NJ COLL =NEAR AFZFZAYThe collinear antenna array described in this article is aFranklin type of an array with reflectors spaced behind eachelement. There are 36 driven elements and 36 reflectors for atotal of 72 active elements. For 70 cm, the driven elements are13 inches in length, and the reflector elements are 5 percentlonger or 13-5/8 inches. The phasing stubs are 13 inches intotal length, and the stacking distance between bays is 13inches. A noncritical spacing between driven elements andreflectors is 5-1/2 inches or approximately 0.2 wavelength.

The feed point impedance of the array is in the range of 300ohms, and a good grade of 300 ohm twin lead matches well. At thetransmitter end, a coaxial cable balun is used to transform theimpedance from 300 to 50/75 ohms for connection to thetransmitter and/or receiver.

The balun is constructed of RG-59 75 ohm cable as shown in Figure1. The 1/2 wave balun loop length is calculated as follows:

All shields are connected together, andthe balun converts 75 ohms to 300 ohms(a 4 to 1 impedance change).

Figure 2 depicts the overall arrayconcept. The elements and phasing stubsare made of 1/8 inch soft aluminum Fig.1-BALUN CONNECTIONclothes line wire. Figure 3 shows thedetails of the bending procedure for the driven elements. Thedots indicate where nails can be driven in a board to serve as a

template for bending. Four are required: two for bay one and twofor bay three. The configuration for bay two is somewhatdifferent. Two are required for bay two.

The formed elementS are fastened as shown in Figure 2 andassembled onto a wooden frame constructed from 3/4 by 3/4 inchredwood designed to minimize weight. The folding of the elementsreduces the number of electrical connections to a minimum. Useof the nail template makes bending easy and provides uniformelement sections.

No connection is made between all of the reflectors and thedriven elements; each reflector is independent. A reflector ismounted behind each driven element.

The array has about 18.5 dB of gain as compared to a singledipole. The antenna exhibits a front lobe width of about 15degrees with two side lobes of 12 dB down. The front -to -back

WWATS NEW?!Western Washington Amateur Television Socie-

ty has had a busy summer with a variety ofactivities.

A functioning 434/900 Mhz ATV repeater wasthe result of a joint effort by Chuck Northcutt,W7SRZ, President of WWATS, who purchased themajor components, a Lou "Wizard" Hutton,K7YZZ who assembled the pieces. The completedrepeater was donated to the club.

The 434/1200 Mhz repeater owned by GarySultan, K6HVI, has been reconfigured in prepara-tion for a move to a higher location.

Chuck Zappala, KE7SA, Tom Asaif, K7KAI,and Bill Hoppe, W7GWU have spent the summermonths looking for "The" ultimate locations forboth repeaters atop the numerous hills of WesternWashington.

A group of ATVers led by Bob Castaneda,KC7QR, made an expedition to Mt. Pilchuck, Northof Everett, Washington to transmit live and videotape pictures from the mountain top. They receiv-ed and taped transmissions from the various memberATV stations in the Western Washington and BritishColumbia, Canada.

A similar activity occurred when a group ofAmateurs from AEA climbed to the 7,000 foot levelof Mt. Rainier and transmitted P5 pictures to anATV station at the Tacoma Hamfair in August.

With this setup you can takeoff, fly and land the R/C air-plane without ever looking up atthe plane. Carl mentions that ittakes a certain of piloting skillas those who have never flowna real plane tend to crash!

At 10:43 am CDT on Oct. 7th ahelium balloon was launched by BillWB8ELK and Mark KA9SZX from TimKA9SZY's farm west of Champaign,Illinois. The payload was built byWB8ELK and Bob N8IYD and wasidentical to the flight made fromOhio in July with the exception ofa servo operated mirror. The mirrorwould move away from the frontof the camera allowing periodicviews of the horizon as well as theview of the earth uuwn below.

Saturday morning turned out tobe crystal clear with unlimitedvisibility and with no wind! About30 spectators were on hand towatch as the package and flighttrain was as.semhled. After recei-ving the weather bureau wind pro-files for the morning our groundcomputer was fired up to give usthe landing prediction. The first ofour problems were encounteredwhen the computer failed! Howevera quick call to Joe WB8MS3 savedthe day when he ran the predictionon his system back in Ohio. Theprediction was 108 miles to theeast for a landing northwest ofIndianapolis. The Indianapolis foxhunter group gathered within a 20mile circle of this point to waitfor the balloon package to drop onthem! Since the balloon would betravelling through a very strong j tstream it would be actually mov-ing over 120 MPH ground speed attimes.

During the final test of thepackage we discovered that the on-board flight computer and altimeterwould not start up! After an hourof futile efforts we tried a heatgun on it since it was so cold inthe barn. Apparently the resetcircuit liked it warm and it startedright up...I did too as I used theheat gun on myself for awhile!!Tim's barn was a little low for a8 foot balloon and we had to carryit out crawling on our hands andknees to remove it. Just when wethought we had every aspect oflaunching balloons down to a sci-ence Mother Nature throws usanother curve. As we were gettingset to launch the balloon in thefield a 20 MPH wind gust poppedup out of nowhere! The ballooncame within seconds of blowing upas the winds gusted higher. Markhad to let go before we were inPAGE 46

CHAMPAIGN BALOON FLIGHTposition and the package went upfor a few feet and then crashedin the field before bouncing offand heading on it's way. The omni-directional Big Wheel ATV antennareceived extensive damage (I nowcall it the Big MESS antenna) andthe mirror mount broke partiallyloose. Fortunately everything stillworked except the ATV signal wasdown at least a P -Unit from previ-ous flights (Although we had a lotof vertical component this time).Also the mirror would not movecompletely out of the camera viewcausing an interesting split screeneffect. Spectacular views of theIllinois countryside were seen onthe ATV downlink and the horizonshots were tremendous. At thehigher altitudes this horizon viewactually showed quite clearly theblackness of outer space and theearth's curvature. At about 80,000feet the balloon slowed down andstayed over Raccoon Lake in west-ern Indiana. This lake and theWabash River were easily viewablefor nearly 20 minutes. At 119,300feet the balloon burst as the cam-era was looking at the edge ofspace and provided us with anamazing ride down to earth. At thispoint the ATV signal was seen fromnear the Des Moines, Iowa area tothe west and as far east as K3IBDnear Pittsburgh, PA. Also receptionof the 2 mtr beacon was heard asfar as South Carolina. As the pack-age parachuted down lower incredi-ble ground detail could be otserv-ed. The position could be deter-mined using just county road mapsand watching the video! The balloonfinally landed 32 minutes afterburst in a soybean field 6 mileseast of Lebanon, Indiana havingtravelled over 113 miles. Since theprediction missed by only 8 milesmost of the Fox Hunters were justa few miles away and with thehelp of Tim KA9SZY in the chaseplane the package was discoveredby Kevin N9FWB, Rick N9HLL andJohn K9JD in about 30 minutes.They were only 2 miles away whenit landed and caught a glimpse ofit as it hit. They also saw a briefview of their car sitting on theside of the road from the balloonvideo just before landing! Shortlyafterwards the entire Indy foxhuntgroup descended on the scene. Two

cars had left Champaign after thelaunch. Phil KA9WGN and DebbieKA9JYI in one car and Mark KA9-SZX and myself in the Elkmobile.Even though we were travellingover 80 MPH down the freeway attimes we still were over 30 milesaway when the package hit! Sincethe Indianapolis area is only 25miles away we dropped the payloadnear several of the local ATV'ers.Tom KC9JX and Ron KD9QB live justa few miles away and were ableto record the descent until just 50feet of hitting the soybean field.

Considering the rough takeoffthe miql,zion was a success (we gotit back!!) although the packagesuffered more damage on takeoffthan landing. As we were leavingthe area we were given a verystrange look from the farmer ashe started to harvest the soybeans!!Another hour earlier he would'veseen more than soybeans growingin his field!

Future miRs-ions will continue inthe spring and will include a pres-sure relief valve to control thealtitude before the balloon bursts.Also in the works are an ATV re-peater (910.25 MHz in - 439.25out), a delayed action two meterrepeater, a packet digipeater anda glider flight released from100,000 feet which we hope to flyback to the launch site. 73's Bill -WB8ELK

The AEA engineering standards of high performanceare evident in this new transceiver. The FSTV 430has a sensitive UHF GaAsfet preamp with a crystalcontrolled downconverter and IF filter (channel 3 or

4) for signal reception. The transmitter in the FSTV 430uses a VSB (Vestigial Side Band) design to mini-mize adjacent channel interference. Two frequenciescan be selected for transmission, one crystal isincluded.

Signal output is one watt p.e.p..Any amateur with a technician class (or higher)

license can join the fun of ATV. The FSTV 430 cantransmit in either black and white or color. Theportable, lightweight FSTV 430 transceiver can be usedfor in station or on the go operation. You can evenconnect your VCR for transmission of video tapes.
