Amaseno
Amaseno has the fortune of possessing lots of art treasures and a history rich in religious, medieval and civil memories it
is worth to know about. The first person to write about Amaseno's history and to bring into light its important monuments
was Giuseppe Tomassetti, well known Roman archaeologist and historian.
Amaseno is in the Lazio region, 110 Km south of Rome, and it is situated precisely on the upper valley of its river also
called Amaseno. It is surrounded, in an amphitheatre-look alike, by the Lepini and Ausoni mountains with their highest
peak, Monte delle Fate, reaching 1090 meters.
Amaseno's territory is one of the widest in the Frosinone province 77 square km. Nearby cities are Villa S. Stefano,
Castro dei Volsci, Vallecorsa, Monte S. Biagio, Sonnino, Roccasecca dei Volsci and Prossedi. There are over 4.000
inhabitants in Amaseno, mostly farmers living in the countryside.
The vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean climate, ranging from sage, holm oak, oak and olive trees. The main
products are cereals, olive oil, pulses, vegetables, tobacco, wood and animals. There are 36 water springs counted so
far in Amaseno, the biggest one being Capo d'acqua. Experts from the Universita' di Roma have analysed the water and
stated that it is very good to drink, it's pure, light, helps digestion and so it is good for your well-being.
Research shows that there is no proof that Amaseno is of Roman origin. Furthermore, it's position is not one of a safe
and strategic place typical in Roman time. Bertarelli and other historians back the idea that Amaseno was set up in eight
hundred AD in the surroundings of a monk's abbey, typical of other medieval cities.

St. Maria's church in Amaseno XII
century
National MonumentsThe building, all made with local limestone squared and
chiselworked, looks imposing and austere, typical of a
Gothic-primitive style.
The church is of basilica-like shape. The interior has
three naves which are divided by eight rectangular
pilasters, the last four of them reinforced by leaning
pillars. The capitals are adorned with leaves, pointed
arches and cross vaults.
The church of S. Maria is therefore to be considered the
first national monument of that primitive ogival
architecture introduced in Italy by French Cistercians.
Traditions and FolkloreBesides the Sunday open air market there are two big
fairs during the year :
the first one is St.Lorenzo's fair (10th August) ; the other
one is St. Anna's fair (the Monday following the second
Sunday of October).
In these fairs you can find all sort of products: agrarian,
handicraft, livestock, clothing and so on.
Ciociaro Costume
When we say "Ciociaria" we usually mean the north and
the central region of Frosinone.
The name derives from a particular kind of sandal
"Ciocia", held on by thongs laced round the leg used
some years ago by the native inhabitants of this area.
The "Ciocie" belong to the typical ciociaro costume, one
of the most beautiful in Lazio.
The woman costume was particularly garish. It consists
of: a flated pleated red skirt, a multicolour apron "sinale",
a black satin corset, a white blouse, a shawl, a
headgear, a pair of white cotton stockings, "ciocie", coral
earrings and a big coral necklace. The cloth for the
costume was hand-spun by native people.
POPULAR SONGS
They consist of: nonsense rhyme, rigmaroles, and
"stornello".
