Amar Jyoti – An Introduction

Amar Jyoti is a voluntary organization rendering rehabilitative services to persons with disabilities through integrated education, medical care, vocational training, child guidance and self-employment since 1981. It has a branch in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh also.

With the pioneering concept of integration and inclusion, Amar Jyoti is running a school where 602 children with and without disability are studying together in equal number. The school curriculum includes vocational training, sports and cultural activities, which help immensely in inculcating confidence and developing all-round personalities. A free mid-day meal and medical care facilities are also provided during school hours. Special Sections of the school cater to the slow learners and children with multiple disabilities. Under the guidance of professionals at the Child Guidance Centre (CGC) and special educators, these children get opportunities of social, recreational and vocational integration along with academic remediation as per need under the Partial Integration Programme of Academics.

For capacity building, Amar Jyoti is running several courses of repute. A 4½ year course of B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physiotherapy in collaboration with the University of Delhi, a Diploma Course in Special Education (DSE-MR) affiliated to NIMH and recognized by the RCI and short-term courses for in-service teachers are the popular ones at Amar Jyoti. The institution is also a recognized study center for National Open School and Indira Gandhi National Open University courses.

The Child Guidance Centre at Amar Jyoti is run by experienced professionals offering services for home training and necessary assistance for Early Intervention of developmentally delayed and children with multiple disabilities.

Amar Jyoti is an associate member of Rehabilitation International and has also received two National Awards conferred by the President of India for outstanding services to persons with disabilities and for creating barrier free environment.

For its meritorious services, the institution has received several National & International awards.

With a vision of placing citizen with disability on the same platform as the non-disabled and with the mission of removing attitudinal barriers towards persons with disabilities, Amar Jyoti is growing from strength to strength every year.

D. ED. SPECIAL EDUCATION (DEAF & HARD OF HEARING)

The life style and the environmental pollutions have led to the steep rise in the cases registered as hearing impaired in recent years. At present the status of disabilities indicate hearing impairment as the highest percentage of disability detected. This silent and hidden disability is homogeneous prevalent in terms of age, gender and region. Dealing with children having hearing impairment, requires attitudes and skills along with knowledge of their psychosocial needs. The need based training of these children opens the way for their successful inclusion in the mainstream schools later.

The national goal of “Universalization of Elementary Education” and “Education for All” can be achieved if children with hearing impairment are trained in readiness skills for communication and learning.

Diploma in Education- Special Education –DHH addresses the special needs of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. About 81 centres in India, registered with RCI, offer this course. Amar Jyoti School & Rehabilitation Centre is one of the two centers in Gwalior, The holistic approach of Amar Jyoti and the availability of interdisciplinary professional team is very helpful in catering to the needs of children and to develop appropriate skills in teachers for training them.

To meet the ever increasing demand of special educators, Amar Jyoti started the teachers training in 1998 in Delhi and 2014 in Gwalior branch which has now become a global centre imparting training in special educators more than 150 people every year.

General Objectives

Diploma in special education-Special education –Deaf & Hard of Hearing aims to develop the professionals for Special education within a broad framework of education, to serve in all the settings:

To build adequate knowledge in the following areas:

1) Child rights and fundamental freedoms 2) Communication options for children Deaf & Hard of Hearing and informed choices3) Various legislations, declarations, policies and frameworks pertaining to disabilities4) Various aspects of hearing, hearing loss, its impact and management5) Methods and techniques of teaching language and other school subjects6) Various areas of child development and the relevant mental processes

Skill - related Objectives

To develop skills and competencies in the following areas:

1) Personal, professional & social competencies & skills required in teachers,2) Development of communication skills in children based on the informed choices.3) Introductory training in using ‘ Verbal Language’, ‘ Indian Sign Language’ (ISL) and ‘ Total

Communication ‘ (TC) for helping children acquire skills in language and speech.4) Subject teaching as per requirement,5) Auditory Training and speech stimulation,6) Development and adaption of instructional materials,7) Classroom management techniques,8) Individual and group parent interaction.

Attitude - related objectives

To develop desirable attitudes towards following issues:

1) Respecting and accepting individual differences in children Deaf & Hard of Hearing2) Creating equal opportunities , protection of rights and full participation of Children Deaf & Hard of

Hearing in the inclusive society3) Educational and communication related potentials of children Deaf & Hard of Hearing4) Creating awareness in society regarding the personal social aspects of disability.

General framework of the course:

The diploma course consists of:

4 core papers (common across the different areas of specialization), 6 disability specific papers and 2 School Subjects (Content cum Methodology paper). Each theory paper has been allocated 6 credits, of 15 hours each.

Practical work which includes school visits, observations of lessons, individualized teaching, skill development, Clinical Practicum and Teaching practice, about 1560 hours of total exposure.

Course pattern: The course includes four core papers, six disability papers and two school subjects to be covered in two years. The details are as mentioned below:

Internal Assessment

Student would be assessed continuously throughout the year on the basis of their performance in all the academic activities, assignments, workshops, presentations and academic records submitted by them. The participation, attitude towards work and the interest in the curricular and co-curricular activities is also assessed.

Scheme of Examination

The term end exams will be conducted Semester wise/ annually as per RCI & AJYNIHH-Mumbai. Examination will be conducted in English and /Hindi.

Criteria to Pass:

A minimum of 40 percent in each theory paper and 50 percent in practical is mandatory.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is 2 years.

Attendance

80% attendance every month during the course work is essential. Failing which the student would not be eligible to appear in the exams.

General Guidelines as per RCI norms

Admission Criteria

Eligibility

Minimum qualification is 10+ 2 with 50% for General / OBC, 45% for SC/ST/PH in any stream

Open for parents having children with disabilities, para-professionals, regular teachers or individuals desirous of becoming special educators (age no bar)

No. of Seat

As per the guidelines of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) the present intake capacity of a study centre is twenty-five from this academic year.

Reservation

As per the state government norms, out of a total of 25 seats, 2 seats are reserved for ST and SC respectively. One seat is reserved for person with disability as per the PWD ACT.

Guidelines

Admission to Diploma in Special Education DHH for the academic session 2015 – 16 will be strictly on the basis of merit and recommendations of the Admission Committee.

Instructions contained in the Prospectus should be read carefully before filling up this Form. The candidate should fill the application form in his/her own handwriting after carefully reading the

instructions. All answers must be given in words and not by dashes and dots. No column should be left blank. Incomplete application form will not be considered or processed. The furnishing of false information or suppression of any factual information in the application form

would be an automatic disqualification and render the candidate unfit for admission. In case any false information is noticed after the admission of the student, the authorities of the

institute can strike off the name of the candidate from the course. Student should not be enrolled in any other full time course; else the admission in the programme

would automatically stands null and void. The centre has a special committee to look into the cases of sexual harassment and disciplinary

negligences.

Registration fee on submission of Application Form: Rs.500/- Last date for submission of the application form: 27th June, 2015. Display of first list of selected candidates on 2nd July, 2015 Last date for deposit of the programme fee: 10th July 2015, before 4:00 pm.

2. Examination fee as decided by the Board of Examination appointed by Rehabilitation Council of India will be paid by the candidate.

3. The fee refund cannot be claimed or permitted if the candidate joins the course and withdraws after 48 hours of the admission.
