Amani United Community Block Party By Pepper Ray Secretary—Amani United Over 50 neighborhood residents and notable community members such as officers from the Milwaukee Police Department, Alderman Willie Wade, and County Supervisor David Bowen were in attendance at the first Amani United Community Block Party held on June 28th on Chambers Avenue between 24th and 23rd Streets. Even though it rained for a brief time, people still continued to take part in the festivities.

A clean-up preceded this event, and afterwards children were invited to dance, eat hot dogs, and play chess with community members including Quan Caston who said, “During the 20 or 30 minutes that it rained during the event, not one child left the chess table and continued to play through it all. In my 20 years of teaching chess, I had never witnessed that before.” Arlene Patterson, President of Amani United commented, “The block party was fantastic. People were very pleasant and had smiles on their faces. Neighbors are engaging more and being more responsive to gatherings without violence. The event was an absolute success. Amani means PEACE!”

Since the block party and clean-ups that have taken place in Amani, a new spirit of keeping the neighborhood clean has been passed on to some of our younger residents. Events like this will continue to bring positive change for neighbors and we hope that all will take pride in living in Amani and work to keep the neighborhood clean and safe.

Community Update from the Dominican Center for Women By Fatima Benhaddou Programs Coordinator—Dominican Center for Women The Dominican Center for Women has been working with the Amani United resident group this summer to bring exciting opportunities to the neighborhood. Our most recent success is the approval of the beautification of a city-owned vacant lot located at the corner of 24th Place and Burleigh Street, down the block from Moody Park. The lot will receive numerous plantings and trees, along with some decorative signage. The landscaping crew will move fast, so be sure to check out their progress through the end of August. Are you interested in promoting the beautification of a city-owned vacant lot on your block? Contact Fatima Benhaddou with the Dominican Center for Women to discuss filling out an application, (414) 444-9930 or [email protected].

Speaking of Moody Park, the Amani United Safety Committee is working with the Dominican Center for Women and the District Attorney’s Office to bring a special training to interested residents that will help prevent crime in public spaces. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training will be provided on August 27th at 2:00 p.m. in the COA Goldin Center Library. At this training, residents will learn how to analyze a public spaces and find potential problem areas that may encourage crime. As part of the training, the Amani United Safety Committee will be forming a Moody Park Safety Task Force that will move forward with safety projects throughout the year. For more information contact Fatima Benhaddou (information above).
