month of November.

Powell tells stories with her art. One day she may decide to interpret something from the newspaper

and the next day she may be overtaken by inspiration in her garden. Visit her blog,

www.dailyartbeast.blogspot.com, where she shares her thoughts and art process. This self-taught

artist has learned from some of the best artist-instructors in Placer and Sacramento counties. She

Abstract DesignsSutter Creek artist Ted Smith will be Gallery 10’s featured artist for December

Ted has been actively painting for over fifty years in oil, acrylic and watercol-

or. Recently he began exploring the realm of abstract painting.

Abstract art does not depict a person, place or thing in the natural world -- even in an

extremely distorted or exaggerated way. Therefore, the subject of the work is based

on what you see: color, shapes, brushstrokes, size, scale and, in some cases, the

process. Abstract art began in 1911 with such works as Picture with a Circle (1911)

by the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). Kandinsky believed that colors

evoke emotions. Red was lively and confident; Green was peaceful with inner

strength; Blue was deep and supernatural; Yellow could be warm, exciting, disturb-

ing or totally bonkers; and White seemed silent but full of possibilities.

Ted feels he paints because "it's in his genes." He taught art for 10 years at Califor-

nia High School in the San Ramon School District and upon retirement in 1995,

moved to Amador County and began to study with painter Howard Rees. He has al-

so participated in workshops with Barbara Neches, Lynn Slade and

Jeannie Vodden.

As an active member of the Amador County Artists Association, and their coordinator for Art in Public Places,

Ted has shown his work throughout the county for many years. After years of painting traditional landscape type

pieces, Ted feels his recent experimenting with abstract images has enlivened his

work. For him, facing a blank canvas is always a challenge and there is nothing quite

like finishing a piece that leaves Ted emotionally satisfied.

Ted’s most recent abstract paintings, done in oil, acrylic and watercolor media, will

be on display at Gallery 10 throughout December. These are large, brilliantly col-

ored canvasses that portray what the viewer wishes to imagine.

The Gallery is open Thursday – Monday from 11:00 – 5:00. It will also be open most

Wednesdays during December. For further information, contact the gallery at 209-

657-0203 or visit the website at www.gallery10suttercreek.com
