Albertus Magnus College 1

This fall we arrived at a wonderful moment in our history: the 85th

Anniversary of the founding of Albertus Magnus College by the dedicated

Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs. The Sisters of Peace,

their successor congregation, continues to sponsor the College. We are

grateful to the Dominicans for the unwavering confidence they have

placed in us over these many decades.

During our year-long celebration of this 85TH ANNIVERSARY, we honor

our past, promote our present and proclaim our future. Ours is a rich story in which tradition, excellence and

innovation blend seamlessly as we carry out our mission of providing an education that fosters the search

for truth in all its dimensions and is practical in its application.

Providing the blueprint for the College’s future is our dynamic 2009–2014 Strategic Plan: New

Initiatives for a New Decade. A major component of this plan is the Rosary Project, which will renovate

interior space in the LIBRARY AT ROSARY HALL , transforming it into

a state-of-the-art, contemporary library providing the necessities and amenities required of a 21st-century

information center serving the needs of students and faculty of all programs.

In the past year, we have expanded the scope of our graduate programs with the addition of the

Master of Fine Arts in Writing and the Master of Science in Human Services. On the undergraduate level,

we have added new programs as well, including the Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies, which promotes

understanding of the impact of globalization on today’s increasingly complex world.

In 2025, just 15 short years away, we shall mark the centennial of this extraordinary institution.

In the meantime, we continue CHANGING LIVES for our students and their families

through excellent and innovative educational programs. Throughout this report, you will find stories from

our graduates, telling of the impact Albertus has had on them; their heartfelt words give life to our mission

of service and inspire us as we grow in our role in higher education. Have you shared your story?*

Faithfully yours,

Dr. Julia M. McNamara, President

Have you shared your story?

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Honor Roll of Donors

Albertus is deeply grateful to its donors, especially our graduates who care so passionately

about alma mater, and to those alumni and friends who have thoughtfully included the

College in their estate planning.—Julia M. McNamara

It was very important to me personally and professionally to complete my studies and obtain my degree.

I’m very proud to be the first in my immediate family to have graduated with a four-year degree, and to

be the first student from New Dimensions to give remarks at the College’s Laurel night ceremonies.

I feel so fortunate to have attended

Albertus. It set the tone for the rest of

my life. Although I hadn’t intended to

teach, Albertus provided me with all the

tools: intellectual curiosity, empathy,

leadership and a sense of adventure.

After graduation, I spent two years

teaching in Nigeria and then over

30 years at Eastchester High School

in N.Y., where I specialized in global

studies and humanities. I was fortunate

to have had numerous grants in India,

Southeast Asia and Japan, which

solidified my interest in travel. It all

started with Albertus!

Whenever anyone disparages a liberal arts education, I am a staunch defender. I always have been.

At AMC, I did not learn what to think; I learned how to think. As a result of that, I have crafted a fulfilling

35-year career in the field of spinal cord injury medicine, which I could never have envisioned when

I received my Albertus diploma. I had always hoped that I was destined to make a difference in the

world. Thanks in part to my four years at AMC, I have been able to do that.

Celebrating 85 Years

TRADITION since 1925

ALBERTUS MAGNUS COLLEGE has an extraordinarily rich history,

one that is deeply rooted in our Catholic and Dominican heritage and the

Judeo-Christian tradition. Here, we honor our past, promote our present

and proclaim our future. Here, scholarship and lifelong learning are prized.

Tradition and innovation blend seamlessly at Albertus, inspiring

excellence in all we do. The greatest innovation in the history of Albertus

Magnus College is the creation of the institution itself. Visionary and

courageous Dominican Sisters responded to a comment made by the

mother of a young woman, about to enter college, that there was no

Catholic liberal arts residential college for women in the New Haven area,

or in all of New England. The Sisters saw an opportunity to be of service

and created a college unique to its time and place. This commitment to

new thinking, to thinking outside the box, has endured across generations

of distinguished faculty members and their students of all ages in under-

graduate and, now, graduate programs. The endless search for truth in all

its dimensions is the hallmark of the Albertus education, which is practical

in its application.

My personal story of development is a “work in progress” as I feel that we all have the responsibility to improveourselves throughout our lives.

My epiphany came nearly ten yearsago after a personal tragedy forced me to realize I was very much alone.

My career was going nowhere. I enrolled in the MBA program and felt I was given a new lease on life. The professors were smart, supportive and inspiring.

The Albertus Magnus MBA degreehelped me obtain a much more lucrativeposition, but more importantly, from anemotional perspective it made me feelthat I could not just stand on my own,but that I could excel!

Why Albertus Today? As an undergraduate, I had theprivilege of attending AlbertusMagnus College, where I was morethan just a number. The facultymembers care about the studentsand are eager to offer their assis-tance. Albertus is a college thatstands by its mission statement, ensuring that its students are well-rounded, and are provided with a quality education. Because of my wonderful experience at AMC, I enrolled in the Master of Sciencein Human Services program. If you are looking for personal attention and a quality education,Albertus Magnus College is theschool for you.

I teach Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-Calculuscourses to students in grades 9 –12 at AmityHigh School, District #5, in Woodbridge, CT.I chose the Master of Science in Educationdegree at Albertus Magnus College becausethe objectives and courses in the programaligned with the initiatives of my school district. I felt that the program would makeme more knowledgeable as an educator and, at the same time, make me a valuableasset for my district. As I move through the program, I like the fact that what I amlearning can be applied in my own class-room, and it also provides me with a betterunderstanding of district, state, and nationalobjectives in terms of what and how I teach. The M.S.Ed. program is a great personal and professional experience for me.

I completed my first internship at UCONNas part of the Northeast Alliance ResearchExperience for Undergraduates the sum-mer after my freshman year. I had no sig-nificant laboratory experience, yet I wantedto have a productive summer. As an internat the School of Pharmacy, I spent 10weeks conducting research, acquiringskills essential for graduate school, net-working, making friends, and having a lotof fun! I returned to UCONN this past sum-mer to continue my research.

In 2007, I received my Bachelor’s degreethrough the Accelerated Degree Program.Since I loved my time at Albertus, I decidedto check out the Master of Arts degree inLeadership. Once I was in this program, I found that it went beyond my expectations;it jolted my thinking and gave me so muchmore confidence in myself. I felt transformed.Four months after getting my Master’s degree, I received a promotion to accountand educational specialist providing training workshops at Yale New Haven Health System.

XCELLENCECelebrating 85 Years Commemorative Insert

Growing up as a first-generation Ameri-can, I was taught that education is thegateway to success. Because my parentswere not able to obtain the educationthey desired, they emphasized the valueof learning and reminded me thathigher education is not always easilyavailable to everyone worldwide.

I was drawn to the Liberal Studiesprogram at Albertus Magnus because itis designed to meet the needs of a stu-dent who wants an interdisciplinary,broad-based graduate education ratherthan specializing in a single discipline. As a mother and working professional, the flexibility of a liberal arts educationwith evening classes appealed to me.Through the program, I confrontedmany issues and was able to explore the social, humanistic and scientific dimensions of our world. I believe thatthe Master of Arts in Liberal Studiesprogram has provided me with theskills necessary to enhance my ability to contribute to the quality of both mypersonal and professional life. This education has nurtured a habit of life-long learning, which, in return, will lead me to live a fully rewarding and responsible life.

In 2005, I was a member of the College’s first cohort in a programfor qualified educators that providesan alternative route for certificationas a literacy specialist in readingand language arts. I completed theAdvanced Alternative PreparationProgram in 2006. At the time, I wasa first-grade teacher at John B.Sliney School in Branford, CT, and Isoon was appointed to the positionof literacy specialist. I continue towork with students, coach class-room teachers and model literacyinstruction. My performance in theAAP Program plus my experienceas a teacher and a literacy special-ist led to my appointment to thestaff here at Albertus as an AAP advisor, as well as a Saturday seminar presenter on Teaching Literacy/Reading K–12.

The education program has prepared me tolook forward with confidence to having my ownclassroom. The hands-on field work hours arethe most valuable part of the program in myeyes. There is no way that a lecture can simu-late the situations that you will be working within real life. Even other teachers that I haveworked with are thoroughly impressed with theamounts of hours a student at AMC accrues inthe classroom prior to student teaching.

Perhaps the most important thing any college student can do is participate in internship. While interning at the Depart-ment of Finance for the City of New Haven,I gained real world experience you can’t get in the classroom. Based on my internshipperformance, I was offered a paid position.Looking back over the past four years, I am glad I chose AMC. I received a qualityeducation and am ready for an entry level position in my field.

As an older undergraduate at Albertus, I often felt unsure of mypath. Given my age, I felt I shouldbe certain the direction I washeading in was the right one, asthe opportunity for change mightnot come again. My seniorpracticum made the difference. It gave me new perspective, allowed me to grow in ways I had not thought possible and increased my confidence. Bookknowledge is always necessaryand important, but first-hand experience is priceless!

Celebrating 85 Years Commemorative Insert

The Next 85 YearsIF THE PAST IS BUT PROLOGUE TO THE FUTURE,

the next 85 years for Albertus Magnus College

will continue to be bright, indeed. In 1925, our

“one-room schoolhouse” was the elegant 50-room

mansion known as “Ten Acres,” which housed

the College’s classrooms, dormitory rooms,

dining hall, library, chapel and lodging for the

Dominican Sisters in the renamed Rosary Hall.

Today, our beloved Library at Rosary Hall, always

the traditional heart of the campus, is undergoing

an interior renovation to transform it into a 21st

century contemporary library and information

common, enhanced by state-of-the-art technology

and welcoming amenities. It is fitting that the

magnificent columned façade, the backdrop for

decades of joyous commencement ceremonies,

now becomes the symbolic entryway to the future.

The architectural plans shown on this page are

the original 1904 drawings for Rosary Hall;

the new look will reflect the needs of a modern

educational institution, vibrant and focused on

the future.

The value of a liberal arts education comes into sharper focus as the years pass since graduation.

The ability to write, think and reason is the true virtue of those who graduate from AMC. I have come

Albertus is like a family, truly a com-

munity. I was impressed with the amount

of care my professor showed for me.

He made all of us feel that he was set-

ting us up for success. I felt he really

understood the challenges I was facing,

working a nine-hour day. College offers

you an array of opportunities; there

are certain jobs that you will not even

get an opportunity to apply for if you

don’t have a degree. You can start

with just one course; you will eventually

get there.
