FROM: STEPHEN CAMPBELL, AKC DELEGATE

IMPORTANT...

Further to the report that was given at the Delegates' Meeting on March 14, 1978 by John Honig, Delegate ofthe Worcester County Kennel Cub, and published in the minutes of the meeting, the following bulletin has beenreceived from the Collie Club of America and is to appear in the May issue of the GAZETTE.

There is a contagious virus thathas infected a significant numberof dogs across the country. Thisvirus causes -a disease thatproduces gastroenteritis that canbe hemorrhagic. It cccurs in vary-ing severity. Dr. L.E. Carmichaelof the Cornell Laboratory for Dis-eases of the Dog has cultured, isolated and photographed thevirus. It is potentially dangerousand has caused deaths.

Although the mode of transmis-sion has not yet been proven, practical observations indicatethat it is an airborn virus. Its in-cubation period, again not clinical.ly proven, seems to be from threenays to two weeks.

Prompt veterinary care is es-sential. Early symptomatic treat-ment is one of the controlling fac-tors that determines the seventyof the disease.

The initial symptoms arelethargy and digestive upset; i.e.,decrease in appetite, thendiarrhea and vomiting (both canbecome severe.) An unusuallyfetid odor seems to be acharacteristic of the illness.

The disease can progress veryrapidly in some indduals; with

death occuring as quickly as 48hours after the initial clinical signs.Prompt veterinary assistance, warmth, and the absence of anystress do facilitate a more rapidand complete recovery. A long, quiet convalescent period alsoseems to be essential. Relapseshave been reported one to tux)weeks after the dogs wereseemingly cured of all symptoms.Several have died after relapsing.

This type of hemorrhagic gas-troenteritis is probably not a newdisease. Its virulence this year isunusual. This has brought it to theattention of a large number ofbreeders. They have workedtogether to help veterinariansrecognize this as a single problem. They have co-operated in gettingthe necessary specimens to Dr.Carmichael, who has identifiedthe infecting agent as a CORONAvirus.

Salient points should be kept inmind:

fiche onset of the disease isoften sudden.*The primary symptomsmimic many intestinal dis-eases, but should be takenseriously due to the potential-ly devastating sequelae.

*Ear,, treatment is necessary.

*Warmth and absence ofstress are conducive to arapid and complete recovery.

To date there is no one cure forthis disease: nor is there a preven-taeve procedure available. That iswhy prompt professional care isso essential.

Tnis notice is written not to pan-ic dog owners, but to warn them ofa frightening problem. Alertbreeders within the Collie Club ofArneeita and in many otherbreeds co-operating withdedicated veterinarians andcreative veterinary researchers, have identified the problem as onedisease caused by a CORONAvirus. This work has succeeded inreproducing the disease inresearch dogs. All of this has beendone in less than one month. The problem is now only iden-

tified ..lt is not solved. Much morewor'K is needed and will, I hope, beforthcoming.

CRITERIA FOR OBTAINING AN AKC JUDGES LICENSE

BY - WINIFRED GRAYE

The first prerequisite in your application is to state

that your eye sight is really poor, and you guarantee that

anything smaller than a St. Bernard is a blur. Then of

course, your knowledge of structure, and correct movement

is non-existent. Standards of recognized breeds are not

necessary to study and know, because you have finished a

champion with the help of a top handler, and that is enough

to qualify you to judge all breeds. And last but not least,

you read all the top show publications and study the pictures

so you know "the people" who are winning.

Of late, my experience at the shows seems to be limited

to judges who have all the forgoing qualifications. It has

always been my opinion that if one shows a good dog, one should

be able to win their share of the coveted points. Not so of

late, a good dog isn't enough. A popular recongnized handler

seems to be the in thing, regardless of the quality of dog

they are showing. They are stealing the points. Yes, stealing

is the only term I can use. Dog Shows were originated by a

dedicated group of fanciers, whose interest was for the better-

ment of pure bred dogs. Today, dog shows seem to be dedicated

to the sole purpose of a select few, who have enough money and

political pull to boost their egos to monster proportions.

In the coated breeds, the more hair the better, texture and

type of coat doesn't matter, only length and abundance. If

the color isn't what is popular with the "Judges" don't worry,

that can be changed by adding or subtracting with dyes. What's

under the coat doesn't matter either, since the select group

of people who judge our dogs are not concerned with the fact

that 85% of all dogs are sold as pets. The styles they are

creating with their opinions have placed the show world in

jeopardy of breeding badly crippled and poorly temperamented

animals. In addition, dogs who are suppose to be companions

and devoted friends can't meet these standards, so consequently

they end up being put to sleep, unable to stand the stress of

everyday living.

It is with sadness in my heart that I have sat down to write

this commentary on the present situation in the dog show world.

I love my breed and feel that I have tried to breed healthy,

happy Lhasas, who are structurely and temperamently sound. I

have never felt that all my dogs are Best In Show winners. It's

just that my breed was making great strides in being one of the

top loved breeds in the world. And of late, with the emphasis

being put on the wrong things, I can see the decay coming.

Ask yourself, do you want the breed to decend to the depths

that the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, because of popular

trends? Or, do we stop and re-,evaluate, before its too late?

Thank you for your contribution of 7/5/78 to the LhasaApso fund. At present I have no recent articles to offer youconcerning Lhasa Apso disease. I hope to analyze the data thatI have been accumulating within the next few months, and I'llsend you a copy of that when it is completed.

I am still looking for a breeding male (with renal diseasehistory) for my studies. Any help that you can -give me willcertainly be appreciated.

How to change how "Show Judges", judge? I don't knowthe answer to this question. Until the AKC also changes itsrequirements for a judge, I guess I will have to live with thesystem. But, it seems to me, more than a record of what youhave bred and what you have showned should be required. Inorder to graduate even from elementary school, children arerequired to have gained some knowledge. But, being a licensedjudge requires no passing of tests as to what your knowledgeof dogs is. Nothing but tedious records of your activities.

At present, the only hope I see for the future of theIndividual breeds, is the proposed elemention cf Group andBest In Shows by the AKC, then maybe, the emphasis will returnto where it belongs, to the breeding of a better dog, whichfits the standard of its breed.

As the shairman of the new committe farmed by the ALAC Board ofDirectors I have asked your editor to publish the following listof Local Clubs as sent to me by the ALAC Secretary.

The new "Local Clubs Committee" has been formed to create morecorrespondence between ALAC the parent club and the iocal clubs. In order to begin our liason I must have current officers, addressesand phone numbers. If you know of any corrections, addidfons orpertinent information that needs to be supplied please contact me.

The goal of this committee is to up date the list of Local Clubs andmake it a part of the yearly ALAC roster. We also '-iope to makeinformation concerning events available to be hosted for ALACavailable along with information on how to be a host club. We willalso make information on forming clubs, holding matches, sanctionedmatches and MC point shows available. May I also encourage you .to report your progress as well as your problems to me so that Ican report these things to ALAC.

As you can see our first step must be to have the correctofficers and addresses. PLEASE HELP TO MAKE THIS COXMITTEE ASUCCESSFUL ONE for with the combined effort of our Local Clubsand ALAC we can best serve the Lhasa Apso Breed.

SUBJECT: ANNUAL REPORT - FUTURITIES

THE 1978 FUTURITY YEAR WAS A RECORD FOR THE REGION FUTURITY SYSTEM.WE HAD 176 LITTERS NOMINATED, UP 27.5% FROM A YEAR EARLIER. THE ENTRIES,ALTHOUGH A RECORD, WERE UP SOMEWHAT LESS AT 129 - 17.0% OF THE PUPSNOMINATED WERE ENTERED. THE EASTERN FUTURITY BROKE THE RECORD FORTHE LARGEST ENTRY YET - 56 LHASASI •

PRIZE MONIES FOLLOWED THE SAME TREND. A TOTAL OF $1504 WAS DISTRIBUTED,AN AVERAGE OF $11.66 FOR EACH DOG ENTERED.

WHILE THE RESULTS OF THE JUDGING ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS REPORT,I THINK THE FUTURITY YEAR WAS SUCCESSFUL BY ANY STANDARD. AND THENEXT YEAR LOOKS PROMISING WITH THE ADDITION OF THE NEW SOUTHERN ANDHAWAIIAN FUTURITY REGIONS.

THE STATISTICS AND FINANCIAL REPORT FOR 1978, AND THE HOST CLUBSELECTIONS FOR BOTH 1979 AND 1980 FOLLOW. THE STATISTICS ARE COMPAREDWITH LAST YEAR AND PROBABLY TELL YOU SOMEWHAT MORE THAN YOU REALLYWANTED TO KNOW, BUT HERE GOES:
