To many, the Amalfi Coast is

Italy’s most beautiful region, boasting stunning

seaside scenery, lovely cliffside towns and

easy access to the monumental ancient ruins

of Herculaneum and Pompeii, not to mention

the Coast’s proximity to charming islands such

as Capri. On this program, we take advantage

of Amalfi’s excellent location by staying in one

hotel (with breathtaking ocean views) and

taking day trips from a single, convenient home

base to the incredible sites nearby. Religious

studies professor Barbara Pitkin deepens our

appreciation for the history of this region. I hope

you can join us.

our hotel for an independent evening and dinner on our own. RAITO HOTEL (B,L)

MONDAY, JUNE 11HerCUlaNeUM / PoMPeII / vIeTrI SUl Mare

Visit the great Roman cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii, two World Heritage sites that were destroyed in the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius on August 24, 79 AD. Herculaneum was buried by mud flows that preserved the small, ancient seaside town, allowing us to see it just as it was on that fateful day. Pompeii, the larger of the two sites, was covered by ash, which like- wise buried and concealed the town, today world-famous for the extent of its preserved structures and its stunning frescos. RAITO HOTEL (B,L,D)

TUESDAY, JUNE 12SorreNTo / CaPrI / vIeTrI SUl Mare

Visit Sorrento, a village built atop a cliff and long heralded by poets for its beauty, with pastel-hued

houses, groves of lemon trees and lovely gardens. Then board a hydrofoil for the island of Capri, where we transfer to a private boat and enjoy a cruise around the island. After lunch at a local restaurant, spend some free time exploring the island. Return to the mainland by hydrofoil for dinner on our own and an independent evening. RAITO HOTEL (B,L)

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13vIeTrI SUl Mare

Enjoy a full day at leisure to pursue individual interests: relax at the hotel, shop, sample local Italian cuisine or continue sightseeing. This evening, gather at a local restaurant for a special farewell reception and dinner. RAITO HOTEL (B,D)

THURSDAY, JUNE 14vIeTrI SUl Mare / NaPleS / U.S.

Following breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport in Naples and check in for flights to the U.S. (B)

What toExpect

PaeSTUM

We consider this program to be mildly active, and participants should be in good health. Daily tours are busy, involving one to two miles of walking on city streets, which are, in some cases, uneven or cobblestoned. Some ancient sites and museums are quite expansive, and guided tours require the ability to walk over uneven, rocky ground. You also need to be able to climb up or down several flights of stairs, some without handrails, and stand in one place for stretches of 20 to 30 minutes. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

DR. BARBARA PITKIN specializes in the study of Christianity, with a particular emphasis on the religious thought and culture of late medieval and early modern Europe. She teaches courses on the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther, John Calvin, medieval Christian religious devotion, and women and Christianity. When asked what she has enjoyed most about traveling with the several Stanford Travel/Study groups she has accompanied thus far, Barbara responds, “Most of all, I love the enthusiastic conversations I have with travelers about the things we experience together. It’s exciting to encounter past worlds, while at the same time discovering surprising connections to the present.” Her lectures during our program will focus on the rich and shifting religious landscape of southern Italy through the ages; Jewish, Christian and Muslim encounters in the ancient Mediterranean; and the relationship of religion to art, architecture and commerce along the Amalfi Coast during medieval times.

Senior lecturer, religious studies, Stanford University, since 1996 Author of What Pure Eyes Could See: Calvin’s Doctrine of Faith in Its Exegetical Context (Oxford, 1999) — articles on Calvin’s interpretation of the Bible and on children and religion in 16th-century Geneva Resident fellow, Lantana Hall (2005–2008) PhD, 1994, University of Chicago
