Always Room for One More is a children’s book by Sorche Nic Leodhas (based on an
old Scottish folk song). It tells the tale of Lachie MacLachlan, a generous Scottish man.
While he lives in a humble abode with his wife and ten children, he always welcomes
in any weary traveler who walks by on a stormy night.
The song goes something like this:
There was a wee house in the heather--
'Twas a bit o' a but and a ben--
And in it there lived all together
Lachie MacLachlan And his good wife,
And his bairns to the number of ten.
"There's a fire on the hearthstone to warm me,
And porridge to spare in the pot,"
Said Lachie. "The weather is stormy,
So me and my wife
And our ten bairns,
Will be sharing whatever we've got."
So he hailed every traveler that passed by his door.
Said Lachie MacLachlan, "There's room galore.
Och, come awa' in!
There's room for one more,
Always room for one more!"
They filled all the house up from door to door,
But Lachie cried out, "There's room galore.
'Twould be a tight fit, but there's room for one more,
Always room for one more!"
To me this is the best image of the church if there ever was one. The weather is stormy but as
the Church we will be sharing whatever we've got.
It is no secret that we have been given a lot here at Rocky River. As good ol’ Lachie MacLachlan
may we open our doors of the sanctuary to invite and welcome in as many as we can possibly
imagine. May our youth group, children’s ministries, Sunday School classes, Grief Share,
Wednesday night fellowship, Boy Scout troop, and any other time we gather be a time we wel-
come in any weary traveler who walks by on a stormy night.
May we be a people like those who gather at ol’ Lachie MacLachlan’s house, each one of us
weary travelers who have been welcomed in at some point along our journey:
… the whole lot of them stood at the door,
And merrily shouted, "There's room galore!
Now there will always be room for one more,
Always room for one more!"

What is “Bellefonte Sunday” and What Is Its’ Background? By Marie Morrison
The third Sunday each May is “Bellefonte Sunday” when the congregations of Rocky River
and Bellefonte Presbyterian Churches worship together. In even-numbered years, like 2016, the
congregation at Bellefonte is invited to worship at Rocky River. In odd-numbered years, like 2017,
our congregation is invited to worship at Bellefonte. This annual joint worship service is also an
exchange of pastors since the minister of the visiting church preaches and the visiting choir sings.
This year, Bellefonte Sunday will be May 15th when Rev. Dr. Greg Davis will preach and the
Bellefonte choir will sing.
During the ministry of Rev. James Murray, the session invited Dr. Davis to preach at
September Meeting. He replied that this would leave his congregation without a minister that day.
The session responded by inviting the Bellefonte congregation to come to September Meeting.
There were also joint officer training classes with Rocky River, Bellefonte and Harrisburg churches
during Mr. Murray’s pastorate.
After Rev. Dr. Corey Ingold became our minister, he and Dr. Greg Davis, pastor at
Bellefonte, discussed worshipping together. The Bellefonte session invited us to worship with their
congregation. On April 18, 1999, at a called meeting of the Rocky River session a motion was
passed to accept the invitation to worship together at Bellefonte Presbyterian Church on May 23,
1999. It was purposefully set as a worship service without any extras—no refreshments, no meal,
no communion served. This way each congregation could look forward to the fellowship of
worshipping together without the stress of other activities.
During Rev. Dr. Kyle Hite’s ministry, these annual services continued. At some point, the
two ministers decided to have two joint special services together each year. The two congregations
have the Ash Wednesday service at Rocky River and the Maundy Thursday service at Bellefonte.
Bellefonte Presbyterian Church was organized in 1867 by Rev. Dorland of what was
referred to as the “Northern Presbyterian Church.” The black members of Rocky River
Presbyterian Church were now free and ready to organize their own congregation. In 2017,
Bellefonte Presbyterian Church will celebrates its 150th anniversary. They are planning a special
service for the third Sunday in May, 2017 to which Rev. Murray, Dr. Ingold, Dr. Hite, and Dr.
Carter will be invited to take part.
Make plans now to be at worship on May 15th and enjoy fellowship with our sister church.
Tip: The members of Bellefonte pronounce the name of their church this way---
Bell – like ringing a bell
Font – like the various scripts available when printing
Bellefonte Presbyterian Church is now selling commemorative plates and mugs in anticipation of its 150th anniversary in 2017. Both items show not only the current sanctuary, but also the frame structure in which they worshiped for many years. Pre-orders are now being accepted. The plates are $20 each and the mugs are $7. Please see Marie Morrison if you have questions or want to place an order.
GRIEF SUPPORT
GriefShare— Our second 13 week Griefshare session is at the midway mark in the series for Spring! We have had a group of a dozen people coming to gather for encouragement and support. We meet on Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 8 pm in Room216 of the new building, and welcome anyone who is interested in a Christian approach to dealing with the loss of a loved one. Hospice of Cabarrus County has been one of our main resources for individual counseling and information, as well as the GriefShare web site: www.griefshare.org or facebook.com/griefshare. Please let your neighbors and friends know about this valuable outreach that we offer, and encourage them to join us.
Men’s Breakfast will be held on May 15th at 9:00am in the fellowship hall. We meet the third
Sunday of every month and encourage all of the men of the church to attend. Please contact Bill
Smart or Jerry Clark if you plan on coming.
Thank you Billy Carriker, for repairing the drainage problem in the grove. We appreciate your
time and expertise. And the only complaints we have received are from the mosquitoes you
displaced. We hope to have a new gate installed at the East entrance to the parking lot soon,
so please watch for it to be closed during the week. It has become necessary to close that
entrance due to the high volume of “cut-through” traffic that has become a hazard. Our May
Building and Grounds meeting has been re-scheduled for Monday the 2nd at 6:30 p.m. We
expect to have a busy Spring/Summer. If you have any suggestions, please speak with Dave
or Jim. As always, if you have energy, talents or gifts to share we can always use volunteers,
so please talk with Dave Murray or Jim Rockel. Dave can be reached at 704-455-9469 or
[email protected] and Jim can be reached at 319-850-1335 or [email protected]

WOMEN’S RETREAT RECAP
Our first RRPW Spring retreat Women, Come to the Well, held on April 16 proved to be a
smashing success, with very talented speakers in Corita Floyd, our regional moderator for
Charlotte Presbyterian Women; and Catherine Ritch from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mt.
Pleasant, NC.
The theme from this year’s Bible Study came through loud and clear as both speakers shared
their stories and insight into how we can let Jesus lead us to the spring of Living Water. We
were also blessed with a delicious catered meal by our own Cyndi Conway & her men in the
kitchen; thank you all so much. The afternoon of pampering and taking care of self
was likewise well received, so we may think of ways to do something similar in the future.
MONTREAT 2016: Good news!
Mark you calendars!
Our 2016 Fall Retreat will be held the weekend of November 11-13.
We would really like to see more women from the church attend this retreat!
Save the date and plan on joining us on this retreat.
Page 5
“Who Is Jesus?”
Next year’s Bible Study looks like it will be interesting— “Who is Jesus?” Morning Circle meets the first Tuesday of each month at 10:00am, and Evening Circle meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. We strive to minister to the congregation as a whole and to the women in particular through Bible study, prayer and fellowship. We always welcome new members!
DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION!
We are so happy to announce that Sharon Vanpelt has accepted the position of Christian Education Director at RRPC! Sharon has an extensive back-ground in Christian Education and has a long history with the Presbytery of Charlotte. She will start working on May 16th and we are excited to have her on staff! Please join us in welcoming Sharon to our family. We will have a more complete biography to share with you in our next newsletter.
PASTOR INSTALLATION: Join us on Sunday, May 22nd for the installation of our new Pastor; Rev. Dr. Neal Carter. The installation will take place during worship service with a light reception following in the fellowship hall. Betty Meadows and Ministers and Elders from the Presbytery of Charlotte will be joining us for this celebration. Even though Neal has been with us since February, we are now making it official! It’s a good thing we haven’t scared him off! If you would like to make a dessert or finger sandwich for the reception please contact Carol Lyerly.

North Carolina author, Linda Leigh Hargrove, will speak here in May
Linda Leigh Hargrove, a North Carolina author, will speak in the Fellowship Hall on Monday, May 23 at 7pm sponsored by Rocky River Readers. Linda will be discussing her Isaac Hunt Series which includes three fiction books: The Making of Isaac Hunt; Loving Cee Cee Johnson; and Saving Tate Michaels as well as her writing style. Her books will be available for purchase. Ms. Hargrove is a native of the Blacklands of North Carolina, a farm-rich portion of the northeastern corner of the state. Linda uses her southern roots as a springboard for many of her writings. After graduating from North Carolina State
University with a Masters in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, she worked for over four years as an environmental engineer for the State of North Carolina. In speaking and writing, it is Linda’s objective for Christians to see examples of how to respond to prejudice and racism in a more biblical and concerted fashion, and with such power that the world may know Christ and His forgiveness. Linda writes out of a desire to breathe life into abstract racial reconciliation principles, put skin on them and test them in the real world of Christian fiction. Her fiction blends suspense, humor, and faith into compelling stories about race and class in America. Please come hear this interesting author and invite your friends and family to join us.

OFFICE NEWS I can’t believe it’s been a year since I started working at RRPC as your Church Administrator. It has been a blessing and a pleasure to work here, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us with Neal as our pastor. I’d like to take a moment to review some of the new policies and procedures that have been implemented in the past year:
Reserving Rooms at the Church—Please remember to check with the office BEFORE you plan your event to make sure the room/rooms that you need are available. We are having a lot more activities at the church—(both members and non-members) and everything has to be approved by the church administrator. We try to post all of our activities on the calendar on the website, but don’t assume that a room is available just because you don’t see it on the website. Always check with me before you book an event!
Reserving the Church Bus—The same policy holds true for reserving the church bus. Please do not make plans to use the bus until you check with me. I have a sign up sheet in the of-fice that we use to keep track of who is using the bus and when. When we know that a group needs the bus, we can make sure it is running properly and by booking in advance we avoid any confusion or double bookings.
Locking the Doors—If you or a group you are a member of, are using the buildings after hours, can we ask for your help in making sure that all of the doors are pulled/pushed shut? Please double check the doors after you walk out to make sure they have locked properly.
Directory—Keeping the church directory current is an ongoing process! Please remember to let us know if you have changed addresses, telephone numbers, emails etc… so we can keep current. We are still in need of current pictures of most of our membership—please send me digital photos as soon as possible. The pictures do not have to be professional portraits—you can even use your cellphone! Pictures can be sent to Cyndi at [email protected].
Website— The new website is up and running and we are working diligently to make it the best that it can be! Thank you to Traci Bird and Dave Mowery for putting it together. We are relying on all of our members to contribute pictures, articles, events etc to post on the
website. Please take a look at it rockyriver.org and let us know what you would like to see or how we can make it more user friendly.

We hope that you will take a look and give us your feedback. Our goal is to show everyone what a vibrant, active, welcoming church we are. This will be an ongoing process, and we are depending on you—our church members—to send us pictures, information, announcements etc. to keep the website current and informative. FREE COMMUNITY MEAL
The Free Community Meal we have in the fellowship hall the first Wednesday night of each month is growing in popularity! We have had some participation from the community, and appreciate that you all make everyone feel welcome. We are making great strides to truly make this a community meal by seeking out those who are unfamiliar to us, sitting at their table and eating with them and making them feel part of the Rocky River family. Please continue to invite anyone in the community that you meet. The Free Community Meal is served from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Please do not start putting the food away before 7:30. Some people cannot come until after 7:00 due to work schedules. If a group you are in – or a group of friends in the church – wish to host the Free Community Meal this year, please let Niki Schneider know as soon as possible. If your group or class is too small to host a meal, perhaps you can team up with another small group.
