Page 2: always reaching for independence · Pharma, First County Bank, Fairfield County Community Foundation, Knights of Columbus, Kayak for a Cause, and the Stamford Police Association,

Once again, it gives me great pleasure to present our Annual Report for fiscal year2013. While the year was full of challengesand changes, many wonderful things wereaccomplished in support of the people we serve and their families.

Our clients continued to meet their aspirationsand enjoyed a vast number of programs and activities while doingso. They participated in holiday-themed parties, men and women’snights out, bowling events, art classes, recycling programs, cookingclasses, aqua-aerobics, golf, baseball games, symphony concerts andmuch more. They also spent time perfecting their residential, socialand job skills. In parallel, we, as an agency, continued to meet andexceed our goals and quality assurance standards.

While funding from our major sources has continued to erode, our state budget provided a minor increase this fiscal year. That, however, was offset by a deficit mitigation plan. Regardless, welook to the future with guarded optimism that we will continue to meet the needs of our most at-risk citizens. This past year, the implementation of the “level of need” based funding was putinto action for the Day Programs. Residential programs will beaffected between July 2013 and January 2014. This new method of funding will have a real and significant impact on our agencyand industry. The expansion of our residential program inRidgefield has been put on hold for because funding we soughtfrom the Department of Housing and Urban Development hasbeen severely reduced. We will, of course, continue work with The Ridgefield Sunrise Cottage Board of Directors to develop newmodels to meet the needs in that community.

The recurring theme being heard locally as well as nationally is“people and families first.” We must continue to focus on theneeds and dreams of each person we serve. Work with our localschool district is vital for transition from high school to adult life. Our Day, Employment, and Residential Services Departments

provide necessary skills and support for independence and self-reliance in adulthood. To provide these crucial supports, ourfundraising efforts have to exceed the dwindling resources from theState. Our fundraising events promote our mission while solicitingthe dollars needed to fill the funding gap. But, it is not all aboutthe money. Community-based activities with generous companiesand organizations such as I.B.M., General Electric, PurduePharma, First County Bank, Fairfield County CommunityFoundation, Knights of Columbus, Kayak for a Cause, and theStamford Police Association, provide time, talent and friendship to our organization. Over 400 people were actively engaged andover 2,000 hours were clocked this year.

I wish to thank the outstanding ARI staff, our Board of Directors,Friends of ARI, donors and devoted volunteers for your continuedsupport and encouragement. With your commitment to our mission, we are inspired to seek the higher heights in support ofpeople with disabilities. We are up for the challenge and I knowthat you are, too!
