THE GARAGE FREE GRADES 3 – 8 The Y’s new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programming is all about boosting creativity, imagination and problem-solving skills for youth. We believe that all kids have potential and that nurturing that potential means fostering problem solving, planning, analysis and decision-making skills. All these great things happen here. The Garage is a place where imaginations soar and collaboration brings new solutions. Through project based learning activities, kids will experience hands-on minds-on learning of subjects ranging from simple machines to 3-D printing. In the Garage, we believe free thinking and new ideas should be encouraged, and that every “failure” moves us closer to the answer. All drop-ins and workshops are led by students and alumni of the renowned Clark High School robotics team. All STEM activities are active, collaborative, meaningful, support mastery and expand horizons. SWIM, SPORTS & PLAYPositive, fun activities that build athletic, social and interpersonal skills

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. And the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in activities at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

11

YOUTH SWIM PROGRAMS Imagine watching your child swim across the pool for the first time. Or seeing them learn a new stroke that they didn’t think they could ever do. When your kids take a swim lesson with the Y, they’ll gain confidence and learn new skills in a fun, caring environment, not to mention the benefits of staying active and healthy!

SWIM LESSONSIn Y Swim Lessons participants learn and practice new swimming skills and feel a sense of achievement from mastering something new that they can enjoy the rest of their lives. While participating in fun water sports and games, children also increase their physical activity levels. Participants in Y Swim Lesson are connected to others in the class, make new friends and recognize new role models. The participants are more comfortable and secure around water, as they learn water safety and improve their swim skills. Children have a stronger bond with their parents and family members from the take home activities offamily huddles and sharing boating safety tips.

FRUIT HARVESTUnlike planting a garden, owning a fruit tree is often unintentional. The YMCA of the Foothills Community Fruit Tree Harvest program has a goal to help our local neighbors harvest fruit from their own yards in order to share fresh produce with people who do not have access to it. How you might ask? Simple! YMCA volunteers harvest local neighbors fruit trees, and in return for the hard work, we ask that the neighbor provide 50%-75% of what is harvested for the YMCA to donate to people in need. Donations are distributed to local food banks, meals programs, senior centers, low-income housing facilities, youth and children’s programs, special residential facilities, school snack programs, and shelters. Don’t let your fruit go to waste, call today to schedule your harvest appointment! For details contact Nayri at 818 583 4728 or [email protected]

PRAYER We believe that prayer is both effective and important to our overall health and well-being. In response to this belief, we have created several prayer options for our members and staff.“And whatever things you ask for in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:22Prayer Wall – We have blackboards at both campuses to write any prayer requests and leave notes of gratitude. Prayer Boxes – These are located near the Prayer Walls for any personal or confidential prayer requests or praise reports.

Prayer Stations – Our Chaplain Corps volunteers time each month for our members and staff to receive personal prayer for any challenges or to receive a general blessing. Prayer Chain - In response to the prayer requests that are received through the Prayer Wall, Prayer Boxes, and Prayer Stations, we have assembled our team of Chaplains who regularly intercede for our members and staff. INSTILL A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO HEALTHY LIVING for 3,944 kidsTo reverse the childhood obesity rate that has doubled in the past three decades, we provide a 31-week program called PLAY (Physical Learning Activities for Youth) to more than 1,700 students in local schools with high rates of childhood obesity. PLAY makes physical activity fun and shapes lifelong positive behaviors. All our day camps also provided activities that promote a commitment to health for more than 1,300 children. We currently engage 10% of the youth in the Foothills in these experiences that instill active, healthy habits for life.

GIVE RESILIENCY AND OPPORTUNITIES to 2,348 kidsTo close the educational underachievment gap and reduce associated risky behaviour, our Thriving Kids initiative helps children discover an interest they are passionate about — a spark — and connects them to adult mentors. This motivates learning and reduces the occurrence of risky behaviors by more than 35%. Frequently it fosters an interest in vitally-needed STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Our Thriving Kids programs reached 6% of the youth in our community this past year.

ELIMINATE THE RISK OF DROWNING for 4,649 kidsIn California, drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children under the age of five. To eleminate this unacceptable risk, more than 2,900 children gained water safety skills in our progressive swimming lessons each year. Another 200 children were transported to the Y from their elementary schools for Safe Swimmer classes this past year. Of these children, 75% started as non-swimmers and are now able to save themselves if they fall into deep water. We also introduced water safety skills to children at 24 local preschools, and to all 1,300 children in our day camp.

PREVENT FALLS AND LOSS OF INDEPENDENCE for 1,887 seniors1 out of every 3 seniors has a serious fall that frequently leads to death. This year we aim to have more than 2,400 seniors participate in our Balance & Thrive initiative which includes fall-prevention classes, balance fitness, strength classes, individual balance assessments, balance seminars and fall-proof workshops.

CREATING A SENSE OF BELONGING AND ACCOMPLISHMENT for 1,605youthWe hike. We swim. We kayak. We play ball. We build campfires. We make lanyards. We swing from ropes, sing songs, tell jokes, hunt for bugs. We get messy. We have fun. We make friendships and memories that last a lifetime. Our Day Camp and Resident Camp programs provide belonging, accomplishment, supportive mentors and a warehouse of experiences that define and develop character. Our campers explore nature, discover what it is to be an integral part of a community, and find their place in the world.
