M I N U T E S The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of the Alvord Unified School District was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by President Perez, in the Board Room of the District Office.

A quorum was established with the following Board Members in attendance:

Present: Mr. José Luis Pérez, President Mr. Art Kaspereen, Jr., Vice President Mr. Greg Kraft, Clerk

Mr. Ben Johnson II, Member Mrs. Carolyn M. Wilson, Member

Hearing Session: President Pérez extended an invitation to the audience to present matters of concern related to Closed Session items. The following individual came forward:

Leigh Hawkinson, President of AEA, thanked Dr. Hasson for working closely with her to bring teachers back. Ms. Hawkinson stated that Dr. Hasson did an exceptional job and she appreciates the positive, professional working relationship she experienced.

Dr. Hasson thanked Ms. Hawkinson and stated that it has been wonderful working with her.

President Pérez thanked Dr. Ferguson for extending the SERP deadline for classified staff through December.

Presentation: Bond Debt Restructuring: Dale Scott, CEO of Dale Scott & Company, provided a PowerPoint presentation that gave an overview of a proposal for bond debt restructuring, that his company has developed and copyrighted. Mr. Scott clarified information and answered questions related to this item. Mr. Scott will provide additional information for possible action at a future Board Meeting. The Board adjourned to Closed Session at 5:32 p.m. and reconvened to Open Session at 7:00 p.m. in La Granada Elementary School’s Multipurpose Room. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America was recited by those in attendance.

a. 2012 Riverside’s 25 Most Remarkable Teens: The Board of Education recognized and congratulated the following Alvord Unified School District students for being selected as one of Riverside’s 25 Most Remarkable Teens:

b. 2012 California Distinguished School Recognition: The Board of Education recognized and congratulated McAuliffe Elementary School for being named a 2012 California Distinguished School.

c. 2012 Models of Academic Excellence: The Board of Education recognized and congratulated the following school sites for being selected as winners of the 2012 Models of Academic Excellence:

Rosemary Kennedy Elementary School: Changing the Culture of Teaching and Learning

Norte Vista High School’s International Baccalaureate Program: Promoting Access to Advanced Academics

Site Teachers of the Year and Alvord Unified School District Teachers of the Year for 2013: Cynthia Woods, Assistant Superintendent, Instructional Support Services, and Monalisa Hasson, Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources Development, presented certificates to the twenty-one teachers selected as Teacher of the Year by their sites:

Following Special Recognitions, the Board reconvened to the District Office Board Room at 8:35 p.m. for the remainder of the agenda. 4. Approve Minutes: The Board unanimously approved the Minutes of the

Special Board Meeting of April 30, 2012, and the Minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of May 3, 2012, upon a motion made by Ben Johnson and seconded by Art Kaspereen, Jr.

5. Superintendent’s Report: Dr. Ferguson provided a brief report on the

following: California Business for Education Excellence Honor Roll Schools for

2011: Lake Hills and Myra Linn Elementary Schools have been named California Business for Education Excellence Honor Roll Schools for 2011. After an extensive analysis of student achievement data for every public school in California, Lake Hills and Myra Linn stood well above the rest for getting their students to grade level proficiency and beyond. Lake Hills and Myra Linn will be recognized in local and State media as well as at events across the State. They will also receive a large full sized banner that can be proudly displayed to announce their outstanding accomplishments! Congratulations!

Clean Campus Competition Winners: Keep Riverside Clean & Beautiful announced the winners of the 2012 Clean Campus Competition and I had the privilege of attending the recognition for all participants at Riverside City Hall last Saturday, May 12th. Congratulations to the following Alvord schools for being among the winners: Myra Linn Elementary School Arizona Middle School Alvord High School La Sierra High School, and Norte Vista High School

The following Alvord schools received recognition for their participation in this program: Collett Elementary School McAuliffe Elementary School Orrenmaa Elementary School Stokoe Elementary School Villegas Middle School, and Wells Middle School

Hearing Session: President Pérez extended an invitation to the audience to present matters of concern to the Board.

The following individuals came forward to express concerns related to classified negotiations, lay-offs, to question the legality of transferring responsibilities from classified positions to managers, and to request that staff slow down the lay-off and bumping process:

Lisa Towery, CSEA Labor Relations Representative Carmen Sexton Boykin, President, CSEA Chapter 339 Linda Buchanan, Norte Vista High School Campus Supervisor Mr. Kraft requested that staff provide clarification related to the

question raised about the legality of transferring responsibilities from classified positions to managers.

The following individuals came forward to restate their concerns about Wells Middle School Teachers and to distribute information:

Raymond Herrera, President, We the People California’s Crusader Robin Hvidston, We the People California’s Crusader

6. Action Items: The following Consent Agenda items were presented for approval: a. Accept Gifts:

1) Arlanza PTA donated $2,000.00 to Arlanza Elementary School for student field trips.

2) The VFW Post 9223 donated $250.00 to Myra Linn Elementary

School for student study trips and/or classroom supplies. 3) Schools First Federal Credit Union donated Scholarship funds to the

following sites through their Worthy Student Awards Program: Alvord High School $300.00 Norte Vista High School $500.00

4) The Assistance League of Riverside donated $1,000.00 to Norte

Vista High School’s AVID program for distribution as $100.00 Scholarships for 10 students to assist with defraying costs associated with the school sponsored college campus visitations.

AUSD – Minutes of May 17, 2012

Board/Superintendent Comments:

Carolyn M. Wilson ~ Mrs. Wilson congratulated everyone in their new positions and wished them well next year. Mrs. Wilson stated that there have been some trials and tribulations this year; however, everyone has done an amazing job and she is looking forward to next year. Mrs. Wilson wished everyone a wonderful summer.

Greg Kraft ~ Mr. Kraft thanked Leigh Hawkinson for coming in at 5:00 p.m. and giving her praise to administration and stated that it is refreshing to hear. Mr. Kraft requested that Dr. Hasson provide information related to the legal issues raised tonight by CSEA. Mr. Kraft visited Valley View Elementary School where his wife has been assisting the Librarian and she was recognized for her volunteer assistance.

José Luis Pérez ~ “The direction we are going with our District is better than it has been, we need to continue to work together. I am looking forward to future years. Thank you.”

Art Kaspereen, Jr. ~ Mr. Kaspereen attended Norte Vista High School’s student awards last night and stated that it was thrilling to witness the students receive their well deserved awards. Mr. Kaspereen congratulated everyone on their newly appointed assignments and wished them well. Mr. Kaspereen worked with Charles Cummins for two years and knows he will do a great job in his assignment. Mr. Kaspereen is excited about the great team the District is putting together and stated that there are many positive things going on during these difficult times. Ben Johnson ~ Mr. Johnson echoed his colleagues comments and stated that it is really exiting to see the positive changes. Mr. Johnson commended all of the students who have done so well and commented that he is amazed at the academic progress students are achieving. Mr. Johnson thanked Leigh Hawkinson and Carmen Sexton Boykin and stated that it has been a challenging year. Mr. Johnson thanked Cabinet for their aggressive goals and stated that he is surprised by all they do. Nicolas Ferguson ~ Dr. Ferguson stated that it is rewarding to see that citizens and parents are supporting the Board and their school sites. Dr. Ferguson has found it enjoyable and rejuvenating to watch the students receive their scholarships and awards. The meeting adjourned at 8:37 p.m. _________________________________ Nicolas D.
