Alumni Support Makes Delta Chi Experience Possible, Rewarding, and Memorable

How Will You Make an Impact?

Delta Chi at Kansas State now overlaps five decades on campus, three charters, and more than 700 brothers initiated since our founding in 1962. With our second President’s Cup awarded to

our chapter this year, we are proud to once again be one of the top Delta Chi chapters in the country, and one of the most respected and well-known fraternities at Kansas State University.

As I reflect on my college experience, many of my strongest college memories involve times with my brothers: my initiation and later initiating new brothers; getting into a snowball fight at Tattarax Apartments and the resulted patched windows; gutting and refinishing the 508 Sunset house in 1998; comforting a brother whose sister was in a car accident; mom’s day auctions; bowl game road trips (and Dan Hammons ’98 smoking while pumping gas); senior pub crawls (yes, plural). The list continues…

If you spent five minutes right now, you could probably jot down a whole list of your own great Delta Chi memories. As the new president of the K-State Delta Chi Educational Foundation, my goal is to continue to grow the financial support we are able to provide to our collegiate brothers each year. By doing so, we will be able to help even more men create their own great memories for years to come.

The Foundation continues to recognize our young brothers for their great work, and the only way to continue to provide that support is to have

brothers like you donate. Your support will allow a young man to experience fraternity done right and will help pave his way to a brighter future for Delta Chi.

Please include our Foundation in your giving this coming year; it will impact the lives of young men more than you know. If

you are interested in including Kansas State Delta Chi in your estate planning, please do not hesitate to contact me.

On the evening of Saturday, October 24, brothers from all five decades that Delta Chi has been at Kansas State joined

K-State faculty members and parents in attending a three-part anniversary celebration. The event was to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the International Fraternity, the fifth anniversary of the current chapter’s colonization, and a celebration of being on the K-State campus for more than 50 years.

We learned this summer that we would have one more thing to celebrate: Kansas State winning the chapter’s second President’s Cup! This is the highest award presented to a chapter for overall chapter programing excellences, and it was only awarded to three chapters out of the 120 chapters this year. In addition to the group awards, Mike Dichiser ’95 was presented with the Meritorious

Service Award, which he received last year for his dedicated service as president of the Kansas State Delta Chi Housing Corporation.

The International Fraternity and Kansas State Delta Chi Chapter honored Tom Haney ’70 with this year’s Meritorious Service Award for his service as legal advisor for the International Fraternity for 12 years. Prior to serving as the International Fraternity legal advisor, Tom served for many years as president of the Kansas State Delta Chi Housing Corporation. THE BONDS OF BROTHERHOOD STRENGTHEN OVER TIME

Members of the ’60s Reunite and Reminisce

How does one measure the strength that the bonds of brotherhood create over time? If it thrives for 50 years through thousands of miles of separation and

hundreds of unique life experiences, it is strong. And so it was with the men of Kansas State Delta Chi from the decade of the ’60s when they came back together in Manhattan in June. The 50-year reunion included all members who were initiated from the time the fraternity was chartered in the mid-’60s through the end of the decade. Nearly a fourth of those eligible to attend were present, representing men who live on both coasts and all regions in between.

During the two-day reunion, much of the action took place in the hospitality room, which was set up in the Bluemont Hotel. A highlight that first evening was the barbecue hosted by the undergraduate chapter at the chapter house. Many of the alumni returned to the hospitality room from that event to express their positive impressions of the younger members. The second day was more structured, beginning with a tour of the city, the campus, and many of the new sports facilities. The grand finale was a group dinner at the Hibachi Hut, which in the ’60s was the chapter’s unofficial, adopted home away from home. (Of course, in those days the Hut resided in Aggieville). As we said goodbye during the morning of day three, we realized that, for many of us, it would likely be the last time we would see some of the men who had been our brothers during the last 50 years. It was a bittersweet farewell, but largely overshadowed by the rare opportunity to reestablish connections that have existed for so long.

awarded the Don Edwards Scholarship for Most Improved GPA, and chapter executive officers were recognized for their service to the chapter.

The setting of the event was very unique, as it was held at the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan. Before the program started, all of the guests were able to view the different exhibits and learn a little history about the Flint Hills! There will be another great opportunity for alumni and undergraduates to connect in spring 2016. Be on the lookout for more details.

As a Phi Delta Theta legacy following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, attending what was then called rush week

at Kansas State University was only a formality for Tom Haney ’70. “When I arrived at Delta Chi, which I had never heard of, it was obvious there was no pretense among the members,” he said. “I liked everyone I met and was influenced by several outstanding Delta Chis, including Darwin Cline ’68, Alan Jaax ’67, and many more. I was asked to pledge, and the rest is history.”

Through the K-State Chapter and its brotherhood, Tom felt a strong sense of accomplishment. “I grew as a man, a friend, a brother, and a leader,” he said. Tom also learned a great deal of life lessons that were instrumental in preparing him for life after college. “It taught me discipline, the ability to get along with others, good study habits, and the courage to stand up for what I thought was right, regardless of the opinions of others,” he stated.

While at K-State, Tom received his bachelor’s degree in history and pre-law. His studies, paired with being a member of Delta Chi, prepared him for his current position as an attorney with Stevens & Brand, LLP in Topeka, specializing in criminal and civil litigation. In addition to familial ties to Greek life, Tom also has familial ties to his career. “My uncle, Delmas Haney, was a noted attorney in Hays, Kansas,

Last a Lifetime

and I admired him greatly,” Tom shared. He particularly admired the way in which his uncle treated everyone as equals. “He treated the bank president no differently than the custodian and was a friend to all.” Tom had hoped to join his uncle’s firm after graduation, but his uncle passed away at the age of 59, while Tom was a

sophomore in college.

Despite losing his uncle at such a young age, Tom did not want to give up on becoming a lawyer. Tom received his J.D. from Washburn University with honors, and he is a member of the American, Kansas, and Topeka Bar Associations. He also served a 12-year term as legal advisor to the International Fraternity. In addition to his former position as legal advisor, Tom

also held the position of Alumni Association president, as well as the first Housing Corporation president. He is also a member of the ABT and Kansas State Delta Chi Educational Foundation.

Tom still has strong bonds to the brotherhood that helped shape him into the confident man and leader he is today. To any alumni who may have lost touch, Tom encourages them to reach out to their brothers. “It’s never too late to become re-engaged,” he stated. “All we are looking for is brotherhood and to renew friendships.” His advice to undergraduates is to “never give up if you think you are right, nor take the easy way out for the sake of expediency.” Above all, he

encourages undergraduates to think of someone other than themselves, but to cherish their time in college—it will be over before you know it.

Tom was able to visit the K-State chapter house last Founders’ Day and was so impressed by the members, as he felt they appeared to be more mature and much smarter than he was in college. He was also pleased with how things are being run by the active chapter. “It is outstanding, and now that the fire is going it must be constantly tended to keep the flame bright,” he said. “Remember, be a leader or a follower, or get out of the way.”

When Tom isn’t busy in court, he likes to travel abroad whenever possible. He also plays the same Gibson guitar he dragged with him to KSU in 1967, which still has a sticker on it that says “LBJ is alive and living in Washington.” Tom also published a novel titled Accused by the State. Tom and his wife of 46 years, Barbara Tozer Haney, an alumna of KSU Alpha Delta Pi, live in Topeka, Kan. E-mail: [email protected]
