Alumni on the Look at TEDxYouth@Laredo

TEDxYouth@Laredo is an independently local event that recreates the unique experience found at TED, a global

set of conferences that congregates the world’s leading thinkers to carry forward the mission of “ideas worth

spreading.” The inaugural event focused on the theme of “Home” and gathered local community leaders which

included our very own TAMIU Alumni Allison Ramírez and Alejandra Ávila.

Allison Ramírez ’15

Allison left her hometown to follow her fashionista dreams at a prestigious college.

She missed her hometown, so when the opportunity arose from the

CollegeFashionista website, she accepted and was able to work from the comfort of

her home. She continued to pursue her dreams. Her fashion blog, “The Stylish Soul,”

has been very successful opening many new avenues. Seveteen Magazine, The Zoe

Report, Macy’s, e-Bay, Dockers and the Huffington Post are some of the places she has

worked. Allison is proof that one can pursue their dreams without leaving home.

Alejandra Ávila ’11

Alejandra shared her own idea of “The Lucky Equation.” This is about being between

pragmatic and ideological which leads to success. Because of her idea, Alejandra

attends The University of Texas School of Law and has worked in various courts,

clinics, and government institutions which include the White House, the Department

of Justice, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the Texas Supreme Court, and

the UT Immigration and Transnational Worker Rights Clinics. For her, home is what

makes one feel successful and happy.
