One of the perennial questions asked of me, concerns whatever project I am working on. Well, I always have several in the works, some see fruition and others like the history of Standish and the Tules do not. Of course, earlier this year I launched a new website tipurdy@org. On March 1st, I inaugurated a daily blog, which contains a historical photograph accompanied with some history behind it. One of those posts concerns the Brand Project. What is this, you may ponder? I am sure many an alumni are familiar with the brands painted on the wall above the bar at that local institution known as the Pioneer. In 1964, as part of Lassen County’s centennial celebration, Henry Matteucci, Class of 1932, hired local artist and alumni, Frank Maurino, Class of 1939, to start painting local brands. It was a nod to the patrons there, as many were part of the ranching community. Patrons who are not familiar with the region’s ranching heritage ponder the stories behind the brands. As one individual remarked that each brand represents that person’s dream, whether it materialized or not. Thus, this is a window into the stories behind the brands. However, this project is only to focus on an initial fifty or so of the original brands. Over the last fifty years, more brands have been added, some of a dubious nature where a patron creates a brand for the wall, though their only experience with ranching is the steak on their plate. With that in mind, nearly all the brands to be depicted, with the

exception of Bing Crosby, are all affiliated with alumni. The following is a list: Wm. T. Bailey, J.R. Barron, Warren & Hilda Bass, J.A. Blickenstaff, Tom T. Cannon, John Capezzoli, Chappuis Brothers, Leroy Cramer, L.V. DeForest and Franklin DeWitt, Hansen Cattle Company, Gus Harwood, Floyd Hoffman, Jack Humphrey, Abe Jensen, Fred Johnston, W.W. Long, Mapes Estate, Marr Brothers, Bernard McCallister, J.H. McClelland, Murrer Ranch, Fred & Barbara Nagel, Wallace Nye, Jim Peterson, Ray Raker, Rees T. Jenkins, C.M. Roberts, Satica Brothers, Trumbull Brothers, Millard Ulch, Claude Wemple, Winchel & Mulroney, and Leland Wood. If you have information that you would like to contribute, please contact me.

The Alumni Spring Social & Pot Luck was held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the Monticola Club. Over 50 alumni and guests gathered to enjoy a variety of delicious dishes and to pay tribute to our newest Honorary Members, Janet Corey and Bud Valceschini. Janet was very active in Native Daughters for a number of years. In addition, she has been a member of the Lassen County Historical Society for several years. She is a past president; she volunteers as a docent, and currently serves on the board. A few years ago, she devoted a lot of hours researching all of the Lassen County Schools, creating a PowerPoint presentation which included a picture of each school, as well as the history. Janet has been a Blue Bird Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a member of the McKinley School PTA and served on their Site Council. Later, she was a member of the Richmond School RCA and a member of their Site Council. She was active in Sierra Bobby Sox, serving as the Board Secretary and also as scorekeeper. She was on the founding committee for Isaac Roop/3rd Grade History Day and has been a volunteer every year since its inception. She has volunteered her time at the Children’s Fair and this year will mark her second year as a presenter at Fourth Grade Days. She is a past member of the Lassen High Music Boosters and served on their Scholarship Selection Committee.

Janet was instrumental in rescuing the Lassen High School yearbooks. They were scheduled to be discarded, but thanks to Janet and the Lassen County Historical Society, the collection is currently housed at the Museum and available for public use. Bud is a retired pharmacist and business man. He was part owner of Dixon Drugs where he often hired Lassen High students enabling them to further their education and career goals. As a businessman for more than 30-years, he was a booster and supporter for numerous fundraisers, school activities and the sports boosters club. Bud and his wife Gail raised three sons who all attended local elementary schools and graduated from Lassen High School. While in high school the boys were very active in football, basketball, track, and baseball. Bud and Gail attended numerous athletic events and school activities. Honorary Members are presented with a plaque, alumni pen, lifetime membership card, and an autographed guest book. Janet and Bud will be

recognized at the Annual Alumni picnic in June.

Alumni President DAVID FRENCH presents BUD VALCESCHINI’s plaque to Teresa Phillips who wrote the nomination letter for Mr. Valceschini.

Hello Kathryn,

This is Bill Mitchell (LHS Class of '75) with some very tardy news. My grandmother, Amelia Rose Mawer Mitchell, age 100, passed away in early October of 2014 here in Baker City, Oregon. Currently I am not a member of the LHAA (fixing that shortly), but my father (Bill Mitchell, LHS Class of '50) is a member. He passed along the LHAA news letter to me with the task of alerting the association of her death. In accordance with her wishes no funeral or obituary was published other than here locally; however the family did debate about contacting the Lassen Co. Times at that time. She had a wonderful 100th birthday party here in Baker City in May. Her three children, all LHS grads, were here as well as many grands, great-grands, etc. from all over the US. I will attach a copy of the memorial that we as family created to remember her. Somehow her involvement in the LHAA became a footnote last October, and, well, tempus fugit. Finally, with no membership standing as yet, I would like to nominate my grandmother as Alumni of the Year, as she was one of the founding members of the Association. Thank you, — Bill Mitchell '75

Editor’s Note: Amelia Mitchell was selected as our 1991 Alumni of the Year.
