Raider Trader College Store Opens!

This Spring, FM held a grand opening for its new Raider Trader College Store. The store (operated by Follett Higher Education Group) officially opened in January 2017, just in time for students returning

from winter break.

The store was once located in the basement of the Student Union in a crowded, small space. This new location allows for more merchandising which now includes not only text books, notepads, and school supplies, but also health and beauty products, food, FM-branded clothing and backpacks, and electronics as well as name brands such as Apple, E.L.F. Seeing the World…Ireland 2017…Belize 2018

Local Alumni Artist Tyler Schrader

As part of the International Business: Study Abroad course, Accounting and Business Instructor Mark Swain, along with

EF Tours, took a group of students, alums, and community members to Ireland this past Spring Break.

The group visited Dublin and Belfast where they saw landmarks Trinity College (displaying the Book of Kells), St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Guinness Factory, The Brazen Head (the oldest pub in Ireland), Causey Farm, and Giants Causeway. Students also met with the head of innovation at the Bank of Ireland and the Marketing Director at LOGOGRAB, an entrepreneurial startup that helps companies improve brand detection and mobile engagement.

As the travelers left the Emerald Isle they felt fortunate to have had such great experiences; they made new friends and networks to build their future careers in International Business.

Next year’s trip to Belize (March 2018) is now being planned. If you would like to take advantage of this great opportunity offered by the Biz Hub, contact Mark Swain at [email protected] or Joel Chapin, Art Professor, at [email protected]. ▲

Tyler Schrader, a native of Johnstown, displayed some of his large scale charcoal drawings in his

exhibit, Equal Matter, at FM’s Perrella Gallery.

Tyler is a senior at SUNY Purchase pursuing a B.F.A. in Fine Arts. He is a 2014 alumni of FM’s Fine Arts program where he first began working on large-scale paintings and drawings. Tyler said the exhibit explored the forces of energy found in nature from recordings of his daily interactions with his surrounding environment. ▲

TheTOWER FACULTY FOCUS • Paul Giudilli

Paul Giudilli grew up in Yorkville, New York, with two older sisters, one

older brother, and two younger sisters. He attended Whitesboro Central Schools and went on to Mohawk Valley Community College to earn an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice. He continued at SUNY Oswego to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Public Justice. During his educational years, Paul played football and was captain of lacrosse.

In 1977, Paul moved to Houston, Texas, where he was employed by the University of Texas Police Department as a Patrol Officer and later a Criminal Investigator.

After two years, he applied and was accepted into the Houston Police Department. During his tenure, he was assigned to several different commands, including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer and Field Performance Evaluator while assigned to the Beechnut Substation.

In 1984, Paul was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to the Park Place Substation. There he was an Administrative Sergeant. One year later he transferred to the Westside Command Station and served as Patrol Sergeant.

A short time later, Paul transferred to the Auto Theft Division where he served as an Investigative Sergeant. He was selected to serve in the Interjurisdictional Task Force and while in this capacity, earned a Chief’s Commendation and Unit Citation for his work in several undercover sting operations. At this time, he also started to teach. He taught basic Auto Theft Investigation classes at the Houston Police Academy, Harris County Sheriffs Academy and University of Houston Police Academy as well as advanced Motorcycle Theft Investigation classes at the regional Texas Association of Vehicle Theft Investigators.

While employed by the Houston Police Department, Paul received a scholarship

from the 100 Club of Houston. He completed a Masters of Science program and 30 graduate hours in Psychology while attending Sam Houston State University.

In 2000, after 20 years of service, Paul retired from the Houston Police Department and began teaching Criminal Justice classes at FM. In addition, Paul runs the FM Security Institute, which instructs students in Security Guard Training; the first step necessary for applicants to receive their New York State Security Guard License.

In 2012, Paul became Perth Town Justice. He is certified as a General Topics Instructor by the Division of Criminal Justice Services and teaches Auto Theft in a New York State sponsored Investigative Update School and is also certified as an Instructor Evaluator.

When Paul first came to FM, the Criminal Justice program had about 70 students enrolled and graduated 3 to 5 students. Paul reconfigured the offerings of Criminal Justice and grew the program to 140 and graduated 15 to 20 students.

It became evident, based on the increased number of students and higher graduation numbers, that a second instructor was needed. When asked about the best thing that’s happened to him while teaching at FM, Paul says it was hiring colleague (Assistant Professor) John Armstrong. “The program has continued to grow in a new direction,” says Paul. “It needed someone with experience in Corrections and John has an extensive background with real world experience. Today, the program graduates close to 40 students.”

Paul’s favorite part of teaching is the interaction with the students. His motto is: No syllabus survives the semester. “Everything changes,” says Paul. “You have to be fluid in the field of criminal justice. You never know what will happen. In this field, other people determine the outcome of your day.”

Something you may not know about Paul is that for the past 25 years he

has had a side business—Perth Ornamental Iron—which is not limited to welding gates. “I like to tinker in my spare time,” he says. “If someone asks me to build something that I’ve never built before, I usually take the challenge. There really is no idea that I won’t take a shot at creating.”

Today, a resident of Amsterdam, NY, Paul also has a vacation home in Sylvan Beach. He plans on retiring from FM in three years.

“I’d like to think I live my life in 20 year increments,” says Paul. “From the ages of 5 to 25 I went to school. I gained a solid New York State education. From the ages of 25 to 45 I had my first career with the Houston Police Department. From the age of 45 through when I reach 65 I will have completed my second career as a college professor. Looking to my 85th year, I’m not sure where I will be or what I will be doing, but I definitely plan on staying busy for those 20 years.” ▲

Kendra Griffin received a wonderful surprise thanks to the publicity of her

Chancellor’s Award announcement—a job offer. According to Kendra, when Ramon Rodriguez, CEO of Home Helpers of Hagaman, read about her accomplishment, he immediately sought her for a job.

“I was told that Mr. Rodriguez was calling

various offices at the College trying to find out how to reach me. He finally got a hold of Audrey Egelston, Trio Learning Services Coordinator, who put him in touch with me,” said Kendra. “Apparently, he was impressed just by reading about me in the local papers and offered me a job as an Executive Administrative Assistant. I start immediately after graduation; I was honored that he searched for me the way he did and I look forward to a new beginning.”For fifteen years, Kendra worked as a hairdresser but when a motorcycle accident caused a broken arm, she felt she had to look elsewhere to make a living.“I was in an accident and my husband was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I was scared. I needed to look toward a new career. I had dropped out of high school at an early age so I knew an education would be part of my path to something new.” In June, 2015, Kendra earned her General Education Diploma and was encouraged to enroll at FM that fall semester.“I was terrified to go to college. It had been years since I was in a classroom. But once I made my first step onto campus, everything

started coming together. There is support from everyone at FM.”Kendra enrolled in the A.A.S. Business: Accounting program where she found guidance from her professors. She says that each played a role in her successful education—from helping write a résumé to practicing for an interview to negotiating skills.“Because of FM, I am doubling my salary. I am so thankful,” says Kendra. “I’m not someone who makes plans because I’ve learned things change in an instant. I am grateful that my changes led me to FM and to the start of a brand new career.”While at FM, Kendra was on the Dean’s List each semester, served as President of the Biz Hub (Business Club), and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Wall Street Club. She also became certified for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program which offers free tax help to people who fall within a certain criteria. She was also instrumental in securing a tour of the Federal Reserve Gold Vault in New York City for the Wall Street Club. Kendra graduated May 19, 2017. ▲

Joe Smith grew up in Amsterdam; one of eight siblings. Joe is the only one to

graduate from college. At the age of 47,

Joe lost his job and realized that without an education, he would not be able to find the kind of work he needed. He looked to the New York State Workforce and his family for support and resources to earn both his High School Equivalency Diploma and a college degree from FM. He spent days and nights attending classes to earn his HSE while finding time for classes at FM where he enrolled in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program.

“There were many people at FM who provided me with resources along the way to help me succeed. I utilized the Writing Lab and Math Lab quite a bit; the tutors made a big difference with my studies. At HFM Adult Literacy, Laurie Bargstedt and Gail Collins were very patient and understanding as they helped me succeed with my HSE education,” said Joe.

All of Joe’s hard work paid off. He is now working for Saratoga Restaurant Equipment and Sales where he performs service and installations of various restaurant appliances

including freezers and refrigeration.

His advice to those who think college may not be for them is this: “Do not give up on your goals and certainly do not quit or drop out of school. I was discouraged initially, especially after my first algebra class. I was miserable and confused but I stuck to it and kept trying!

I learned a valuable lesson—put my mind to it and push forward. And, seek help.

The tutors are very patient and will help you understand things that may not have made sense in class. I was afraid to ask for help; I was too proud and thought that I could do it myself. Now, I get to graduate from college and have my HSE since I stuck with it and worked hard. You can do it if you put your mind to it!”

Joe lives in Gloversville with his wife, also a graduate of FM. He enjoys bowling, history, NASCAR, Sci-Fi, cooking, and Saratoga. Joe graduated from FM this May. ▲

TheTOWER Honoring Those Who Served Our Country

FM’s Veterans Club and campus community hosted the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall during the weekend

of September 9–11, 2016. The Wall, a 3/5 scale model of the Vietnam Memorial on permanent display in Washington, D.C., stands six feet tall at the center and covers almost 300 feet from end to end. The Opening Ceremony took place on Friday, September 9.

Later that evening, the College’s Perrella Gallery hosted an Art Show Opening: Through a Laborer’s Eyes, 9/11 (World Trade Center Exhibition). It showcased photographs taken by FM alumnus Louis Pabon (class of 2015). Lou worked construction in New York City and after the events of 9/11 was placed on the clean-up crew. Through his personal experience of viewing the aftermath and his love of the arts, Lou’s mission was to secure a piece and bring it to FM to be displayed. Lou shared his photos and his personal experiences during the aftermath of 9/11.

On Saturday, September 10, a Re-dedication Ceremony of the FM Vietnam Veterans Memorial was held in memory of the 37 local men killed in action in Vietnam.

On Sunday, September 11, FM hosted a World Trade Center Artifact (9/11) Dedication Ceremony. In December 2015, a piece of history was delivered to the College’s campus—a 33-foot tall section of the television antenna that stood at the top of the north tower of the World Trade Center. ▲

TheTOWER Perrella Garden

In the fall of 2016, FM opened the Perrella Garden to the campus and community. It is

home to sculptures created by artists Lawrence Faust, Paul Kant, Caroline Ramersdorfer, and John Van Alstine. In the center is the Friello Fountain. Along the garden’s path are benches to sit and enjoy the tranquility and peace that this beautiful garden provides. The Perrella Garden was made possible through gifts from generous donors to the FM Foundation. ▲
