EDITORIAL COMMITTEE & CONTRIBUTORS

First of all I would like to thank Dr. Steve Corbin for all of his hard work and effort he put in as the chair of the Marketing department. Filling his shoes is a daunting task as he was a great chair and mentor. As the new chair, I look around and notice other mentors I had as well, most of whom are all the faculty members of the marketing department. They have all helped me throughout the years with teaching, research and learning how to do service. So it is now my turn to give back to the department faculty, as well as give to the students and alumni.

It is comforting to know that the marketing members of the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa truly care about students succeeding when they leave UNI for the professional world. There is much talk amongst them regarding how to prepare the UNI students for their careers.

The Marketing department has some of the best students I have seen, and having been to many different student competitions and conferences, I don’t make that comment blindly. They have done well competitively as students, professionally as alumni and still maintain a humble attitude. I will do my best to not only support the students and alumni, but to encourage them to continue with their best efforts in situations outside of the classroom.

Moving into the future will be an exciting challenge for me. Learning a new role will require some changes for me, but the one constant I plan on maintaining as the department chair is for the students, faculty and alumni to continue showing the world the quality they have to offer.

On April 18, 2013, Cris Houlihan (Marketing) received the Errol B. Davis Jr. Alliant Energy Award. This award recognizes academic achievement in engineering or business administration, leadership in campus and community organizations, and potential for future career success. Houlihan was the University of Northern Iowa recipient of this award and one of three selected from Iowa. Throughout his time at UNI, Houlihan has maintained a 3.93 GPA while being an integral part of the continuing success of Pi Sigma Epsilon - Epsilon Theta. He served as vice president of business relations/social chair for more than two years, increasing corporate sponsorship of the organization. Houlihan also played a leading role in setting up the first Department of Marketing and PSE Sales Competition. In creating the event, he used his past success at sales competitions, including high finishes in both regional and national competitions.  After two extremely successful internships with Cottingham & Butler, Houlihan now works for the company as a sales executive. The Errol B. Davis Jr. Achievement Award was created in honor of Errol B. Davis Jr. and his nearly 30 years of service to the utility industry. The scholarship seeks to recognize the importance of scholarship and leadership by under-represented minority students attending one of the state schools in Iowa.

She really enjoys when students come back after they graduate and let her know what they are doing.

Her Favorite Memory at UNI: “I have a lot of good memories from the different department heads and the students; it is hard to pick one.”

Her Advice to Students and Alumni: Be honest, kind, considerate and do your work.

Her Hobbies: She enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren, as well as working in the yard and with her flowers. She also refinishes antiques. She sometimes goes to estate sales to find items to refinish. One oak glider which she refinished is a favorite.

Favorite Part or Favorite Challenge of Current Position: “My favorite part of my job is working with students and my biggest challenge is working with students. Before I took over PRP, I basically worked with the top students through presidents’ council and various activities. I was working with the students who were mainly upper classmen who stand out in some way, are leaders within the College, and now I work with all students at all levels which brings its own challenges. But, it is a lot of fun to get to know freshmen students especially who are eager to be here, eager to learn, excited to be at UNI, excited about studying business, so that’s a lot of fun.” How Does She Give Back: For the last three years she served on the board of the Family & Children’s Council which is a child abuse prevention agency in Waterloo that serves Black Hawk County. At UNI, she is involved in various committees including the United Way Committee, which plans out the United Way campaign on the UNI campus. She also supports student organizations’ fundraisers through her purchases.

Her Favorite Memories at UNI: “Most of my favorite memories come from the American Marketing Association international collegiate conference in New Orleans. I attended that in my sophomore, junior and senior years. Each year it was fun and we competed in different competitions and we weren’t always successful but that was something that brought the members together and did a lot for the team development.” A bonus for Hillyer was in her senior year she got to go on the AMA trip with her future husband, Luke.

Marketing Lesson She Still Uses Today: “I think one of the most important marketing lessons I use now is knowing your audience” and then adapt your message to the audience. She also noted the importance of relationship development. She noted some of the elements of DISC come into play to help her adapt her interactions with others.

Memory of One of Her Marketing Professors: Hillyer and her friend, Justin, in Professor Rajendran’s marketing strategy course. “Raj is a very funny man and a lot of students don’t know that because they do not always catch his jokes.” She also remembered BOD, BBOD, and VBBOD from Professor Rajendran’s essay tests – benefit of doubt, big benefit of doubt, and very big benefit of doubt.

Advice to Students: Choose what you enjoy and what will help you in the long-run and eliminate the rest. Take advantage of the opportunities at UNI such as learning from professors, getting involved in student organizations and study abroad. Make friends and get to know people who are different from you; you can learn a lot that way. Don’t overload and maintain a healthy level of stress.

Personal Update: She married Luke Hillyer (Marketing ’10) a year and a half ago. They have a new dog named Lucy. She is an 11-month-old chocolate lab. They bought a house a year ago. In their free time, they enjoy hanging out with friends and traveling. They both got to go to Shanghai and Hong Kong this last year with a group of students.

Katie (Noonan) Hillyer

Major and Year: Marketing: Sales and Advertising, 2009

First Job After Graduation: Hellman in Waterloo as a Public Relations and Social Media Specialist. “A lot of what I did was B2B in social media.”

Current Position: Professional Readiness & Community Relations Manager for the College of Business Administration at UNI. “What that means is I direct our Professional Readiness Program (PRP) and I oversee the planning and execution at all four levels of the program and also manage our corporate and community relations functions. So I am involved in a lot of different types of events when we bring in alumni, corporate partners and then I also get to advise our presidents’ council which is fun for me because I was a member of presidents’ council as a student.”

UNIBusiness marketing instructor Chris Schrage was recognized for her international trade work at the 26th annual NASBITE Conference, held April 8-12, 2013, in Albuquerque, N.M. At the awards ceremony, Schrage received the Advancing International Trade Award, which recognizes the dedication and service of those that are advancing international trade in each state in the United States, as well as Canada and Mexico. Award winners can be programs or individuals, and must

have contributed to the advancement of international trade for four or more years. Schrage’s efforts in internationalization are highly respected across the United States. She has been involved in these efforts for the past 12 years through her work as a Marketing and Global Trade instructor, global opportunities coordinator, International Club of Business Students, and head of the Muchas Manos Light Work non-profit organization.

UNI American Advertising Federation (AAF) adviser and instructor of marketing Matthew Wilson beat out more than 300 student organization advisers to be named the University of Northern Iowa Student Organization Adviser of the Year. This award recognizes a faculty or staff student organization adviser who through his/her service, dedication, mentorship and leadership has guided the student organization to distinguish itself. “I absolutely love AAF-UNI and the dedicated students who have tirelessly worked to build our organization. In just two years we’ve accomplished a lot, and every year it keeps getting better. We’ve been very successful at attracting bright

and talented UNI students who are passionate about advertising. It’s been a joy,” said Wilson. Wilson started working for the UNIBusiness college in 2011. In 2012, he was recognized as the Educator of the Year at the District 9 National Student Advertising Competition. He was also an intricate piece in developing the university‘s new Interactive Digital Studies (IDS) major.

Wilson has 15 years of professional experience in interactive advertising, experiential marketing and interactive product development. He was creative director of Mudd Advertising prior to joining the UNI faculty and prior to that ran his own ad agency in New York City.

entire product development process, as well as provide a chance for them to experience the “reality” of the business world, to which many students at this point have never been exposed. By visiting the companies, touring the facilities and interacting with clients, students get an experience beyond simply applying textbook concepts to case studies.

I have had the unique opportunity to be on both sides of this project. I still vividly remember sitting in that class 11 years ago, meeting with a representative from Professional Office Systems and talking about how they wanted to look at the possibility of creating a platform for electronic bill payment. It was an experience that, to this day, I have not forgotten and I am still in contact with that representative, even though he has long since moved on from the company.

On the other side, my organization (Iowa Waste Reduction Center) has used this project for the last eight years as a way to get fresh ideas and outside perspectives on many of our new products and services that we have launched. We have also actually hired multiple student interns after working with them on the PIC project.

“Working on the Product Innovation Charter was a great opportunity! From developing the degree of innovation to the goals and objectives, our client was there to guide our research, give us insight, and provide a clear goal of what the PIC should do for their company. This project really gave our group valuable experience! ,” says current UNI

Institute for Decision Making intern Carly Poesch, who got her foot in the door while working on the PIC project.

The chance to make these types of connections and do this kind of work, all for a class project, is something I believe adds great value and differentiates the marketing program from all others. This project is truly a crash course on what it takes to be a marketing professional. Over the course of several weeks, students get the chance to meet with local business professionals, collaborate with classmates to complete a project and then present that project to the class as well as the client. It really is an opportunity that cannot be missed.

Adds Rajendran, “Over time, I noticed a third benefit of the PIC project. Many clients began to take the students assigned to them under their wings. They shared with students their wisdom gained over the years as it applied to work and life. The clients became important contacts and resources for many of our students. This is a very happy development indeed.”

What are you studying? I am studying Marketing Research with Professor Bunker. We have a project where we are working with Cedar Falls Main Street and we are working on the secondary research part of the project.

What have you learned in marketing research class? I’ve learned a lot of good ideas for marketing.

What advice would you give students? I would recommend students study abroad and gain as much experi-ence as possible. You’ll learn more and gain perspective.

What Are You Studying?

As a marketing student, there are few things more exciting (at least school-related) than getting the chance to work with a “real-world” client on a “real-world” project. I can also tell you firsthand, there are few things more rewarding than being that client. Every year in Dr. Raj Rajendran’s New Products Management class, students get the opportunity to go “behind-the-scenes” and find out what it is like to bring a new product or service to the market with the Product Innovation Charter (PIC) project.

The PIC project was initially developed so students could understand the nature of the

Throughout February and March, UNIBusiness student organizations teamed up to raise money to bring positive change both globally and locally by combining the virtues of sustainability, service and global awareness. The fundraiser brought in $4,800 to be spread over three projects. One of those projects was for the International Medical Corps.

The $2,400 will help fund the emergency operations of International Medical Corps. International Medical Corps is a $185-million global, humanitarian nonprofit organization that provides healthcare training and relief and development programs in some of the most devastated regions of the world. UNIBusiness alumna Nancy Aossey (Marketing ‘82, MBA ‘84) is president and CEO of the organization.

In mid-April, 13 members of Global Associates (formerly the International Club of Business Students) spent two days in Des Moines to gain insights into Iowa’s global initiatives. The group first met with Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds to learn about what the state of Iowa is doing to gain foreign direct investment in the state and increase exports abroad.

The trip also included a visit to Pioneer where the company discussed its global operations, and students were able to see the sometimes controversial GMO laboratories and discuss how parts of the world are not open to using these products. Also as part of the trip, Ryan Carroll (Management ’00), of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, shared central Iowa counties’ initiatives to increase exports for local businesses. Later, the group ventured to Pella and met with

Vermeer Industries representatives to learn about the global industry it is involved in and the history and culture of the family-owned business.

In mid-October, 15 members of Global Associates went to Omaha to visit six business and organizations: the Midwest International Traders Association, Claas‘s American Headquarters, YAHOO, Union Pacific, Conductix Wafler and CDS Logistics. Alumnus and CDS Logistics employee Adam Baumgartner (Marketing ‘07) assisted in setting up the trip and ensuring its success. During the visits and tours, students learned about trade security, companies’ histories and potential employment opportunities.

Global Associates serves to create an educational and cultural environment in

which business students with an interest in international business can share ideas and experiences within the university setting and community at large. Global Associates allows international students to network and experience international business concepts with U.S. business students. The group organizes trips, tours and events throughout the year, and all students are welcome to join.

In its first College Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) Startup Simulation Competition, UNI Entrepreneurs placed third in the nation. The team of Jenna Abel (Marketing), Mitchell Phillips (Finance) and Trevor Carlson (Psychology) finished with about 95 percent of the total possible points—a mere couple of points away from being crowned champion. Ten schools participated in this year‘s competition. The teams selected from a variety of business types to start, and the students had to then operate the business over the course of eight weeks, making the necessary decisions for a startup business. UNI Entrepreneurs is affiliated with two national organizations: Collegiate

Entrepreneurs Organization and Enactus (formerly Students in Free Enterprise). Members are provided various opportunities throughout the year to make a difference in their communities while developing skills to become socially responsible business leaders.

In addition to the start-up challenge, the group is currently working on three projects. One is part of the Sam’s Club Challenge, where the students will help a local business with various business aspects. The other two projects are a fundraiser and an entrepreneurs’ conference.

In November, 16 members of the UNI Entrepreneurs group attended the National Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization

Conference in Chicago. Students were provided the opportunity to attend keynote speakers and also 90 different breakout sessions, as well as network with successful entrepreneurs.

For the third time in five years, the UNIBusiness chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE), Epsilon Theta, received the Lewis F. Gordon award -- given to the top chapter in the nation -- at the 2013 PSE National Convention in San Diego. The Lewis F. Gordon award is the highest recognition bestowed upon a PSE chapter. Epsilon Theta also received the honor in 2009 and 2011.

The chapter received numerous other accolades during the 2013 convention and credits the hard work and dedication of more than 90 members for the honors it received, including:

• First, second and third places in the Boss Games (a marketing company simulation game).

• First runner up for Top Service Project.• First place to Phil Musson (Management

and Spanish) for Whan Challenger award (for excellent leadership skills).

• First runner up to Cris Houlihan (Marketing) and Matt Funke (Marketing ’12) for Top Project Manager.

• First runner up to Brendon Brauer (Account-ing) for Top PSE Salesperson.

• First runner up for Top Management Team.• Fifth place to Musson in Pro-Am Sell-A-Thon.• Scholarships awarded to Samantha Kueny (Mar-

keting), Ethan Thompson (Marketing), Jessie Nemesi (Marketing), Houlihan and Musson.

In addition to the students’ successes, Epsilon Theta adviser and associate professor of marketing Matthew Bunker was named president of the PSE National Council for 2013-2014. Bunker has been the adviser for Epsilon Theta since 2003. He has received the national adviser of the year award and witnessed the chapter win the “Lewis F. Gordon” top Gold Chapter three times.

Pi Sigma Epsilon is a national professional fraternity for students of any major who want to pursue marketing, sales management and personal selling careers.

In addition to the awards at the national competition, PSE held its annual spring 5K in April and its annual Drive off the Tee with PSE Golf Outing at Fox Ridge Golf Club.

In the fall, PSE initiated 27 new members. Through its mentor program, new members

have the chance to learn from older members in the new-member projects and team building retreats.

In October, the group held its second annual UNI PSE Sales Competition. UNI students showed their sales skills to panel of judges and networked with sponsors. This year’s first place winner of the UNI PSE Sales Competition was Executive Vice President Justin Schneider. He is pictured with a representative and a sponsor from Tek Systems and the coordinator of the sales comp, senior member Adam Vandooran.

October also brought PSE’s first ever Runner’s Rave glow run. Students decked themselves out with glow paint, neon clothes, and thousands of glow sticks. The event started at the Curris Business Building where KULT radio was broadcasting live. The UNI Longboarder’s Association led the race across campus. PSE generated thousands in revenue which will be used to fund regional and national trips, as well as help Support a Student (a new charity organization at UNI).

From humble beginnings in the R. J. McElroy Student Business Incubator, a program of the UNI John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, to a recent partnership with the MLB Association, Tyson Hanish (Marketing ’08) has turned his start-up business into a home run. As founder and CEO of BigLeagueAnalysis.com, Hanish has created a business to develop the baseball skills of boys and girls across the United States. With guidance and support from UNI‘s R. J. McElroy Student Business Incubator in the fall of 2008, Hanish worked on the development of BigLeagueAnalysis.com and launched the company in June of 2009, applying his marketing education and his high school, college and professional baseball experience to the enterprise. His company provides detailed hitting analysis and instruction to aspiring ball players via Internet technology.  In March 2013, Hanish’s company, Big League Analysis, LLC, partnered with MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) to become MLB.com Academy. MLBAM is the official interactive media and internet company of Major League Baseball.  MLB.com/digitalacademy launched in late spring 2013, creating MLB’s first and only online instructional academy. Some of the features of the new program will include the automated video analysis instructional technology, myHits, along with youth player, parent, coach and league features. This will help connect MLB to the 14 million youth baseball players in the U.S. and millions more worldwide.

“Baseball provides so many life lessons that go beyond performance on the field,” Hanish said. “We see our business as a program for young players striving to be better, putting in the time and effort to overcome challenges in baseball and in life.” Hanish feels his time in the Student Business Incubator program was just as essential to getting to where he is today as his time in the batter‘s box.   “The student incubator created the perfect place for me to get a handle on what I wanted to do with my business,” he said. In a sense, what the incubator does for aspiring entrepreneurs like Hanish, is what he does for aspiring baseball stars. “They provided me with a program to follow to fully develop my business model. No one does anything for you. You do the work yourself, but the support you get is tremendous.”

Hanish currently resides in Raleigh, N.C., with his wife, Julia, his son, Tyce, and his daughter, Lyles.

Interactive Digital Studies(IDS) is a new, interdisciplinary major that represents a collaboration between eight different departments, representing each of UNI’s four undergraduate colleges. All IDS students start with a core set of digital skills that provide them with an understanding of digital culture and communicating through digital technology. Once they have a digital foundation, students can then tailor the major to their own interests by choosing two concentrations, or “bundles.” Each bundle is composed of five classes and is aimed at a concentrated aspect of digital technology. Current bundles include digital advertising, computation, imaging, learning, media and social change, music, visualization and writing. “We wanted to model the program after the startup culture of new technology firms, where innovation and experimentation lead to a true sense of ownership over the end product,” said Matthew Wilson, a

marketing instructor who teaches courses in the new program. “One of the goals of the IDS program is to empower our students to take ownership over their own learning. We want to be the catalyst for a new generation of students to use digital technology to change the world.”
