History in the making!

The 2012 men’s soccer team had a season for the record books, as it qualified for its first-ever appearance in the final four of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship, advanced to its first-ever championship match, and brought home the program’s first-ever runner-up trophy. I was thrilled to attend those matches in San Antonio, Texas, and have since reflected on how the team’s success on the “national stage” mirrors so many other examples of ONU faculty, staff and students achieving national prominence and distinction.

I am so proud of coach Brent Ridenour, his staff and our student-athletes for making the most of the season and accomplishing so much. In addition to the team’s soccer success, ONU players won all the academic awards that were announced at the pre-tournament banquet. Perhaps most heartening for me were the comments of the hotel and tournament host staff who

frequently mentioned our team’s professional, polite and respectful manner. Everyone who represented ONU in San Antonio – students, coaches, athletic department staff, athletic training and sports information staff, parents, alumni, and friends – enhanced the reputation of the University. I was honored to be associated with all of them.

Other student-athletes have garnered national recognition this fall. Alison Steinbrunner finished her stellar cross country career as runner-up in the women’s national meet. Her teammate, Lydia Weaver, also qualified for and finished in the top 100 at nationals, and our women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams returned to national tournament competition.

National prominence in academics continues to bring favorable recognition and distinction to the University and provides more recent evidence of fulfilling our core mission. This fall, faculty members have again published books and journal articles, presented at national meetings, obtained grants, and were quoted in national publications on issues ranging from the presidential election to the economy. Our teacher education program officially received its national reaccreditation last month after a thorough review and earned the accreditation gold standard from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. These are only the latest examples of Northern making its mark nationally.

The soccer team’s amazing run this season continues the University’s legacy of excellence and national prominence. It also represents one of our enduring qualities – ONU people doing their best and achieving success.

Another new year is upon us and with it often comes the traditional “New Year’s Resolution.” While I am not a “resolution person,” I am a “quote person.” Resolutions, for me at least, seem to be a faded memory by about Jan. 5, but quotes can be written down, looked at, remembered – they have a longer shelf life, I suppose. “Life’s a Journey, Not a Destination” has been credited to transcendentalist essayist and poet Ralph

Waldo Emerson, theologian Lynn H. Hough, and, yes, even the musical group Aerosmith, albeit I am pretty sure it did not originate with the latter. Regardless of its origin, this phrase has been a constant in my mind these past couple of months. As President DiBiasio writes in his letter, this year has been quite a journey for Ohio Northern athletics as well as many other aspects of campus. I could review the year and give you countless examples of wonderful journeys at Ohio Northern University, but instead maybe you’ll take a minute and think of the path that has occurred since your initial encounter with ONU? Where are you now? How did you get there? What have been the key moments in your journey? In the next few months of 2013, where will your journey take you? I have pondered these questions myself, and I have decided that, this year, I will take heed to that quote and make it more about the journey, striving to recognize and appreciate each moment (because they go by so quickly) instead of focusing on the ultimate destination, which changes so often. Wait a minute; did I just make a resolution? Happy New Year to all, and may your 2013 journey be all you hope for and more!

The practice and competition site for the Indiana University rowing team, the Dale England Rowing Center, is named in his honor, as is

an annual regatta at the school, the Dale England Cup. (England’s daughter Becky was an Indiana coxswain from 2000-03.) He also set up a scholarship in his father’s name for swimmers at Ohio State University.

Last fall, this mix of athletics and altruism came to Ohio Northern University in the form of the Dale England Gate, a new fence project that encloses Dial-Roberson Stadium.

“During the 2011 season, I came to Ada for a football game, and during the pregame, Tom Simmons and I were standing out in midfield just admiring the stadium,” he remembers. “We were asking each other, ‘Boy, where could we go from here?’ After talking some more, we felt that putting in a wall, a fence and a gate would be the first logical step so that other things – turf and lights – would just fall in line.”

Football, in particular, has played a primary role in his life; it was a major reason he decided to attend Ohio Northern, although he ran track and was involved with intramurals as well.

After graduating from Northern, England earned a law degree from Capital University in 1972.

Today, after a successful 40-year career as an attorney in Pickerington, Ohio, he still believes in the power of sports to positively impact the lives of young men and women.

“I think athletics really have a big impact on character and confidence,” he says. “You’re

working with others for a common goal. You want to win games, but

you also want to do better than you did the week before. To follow what the coaches have planned for you, you’ve got to buy into the program. Coaches want student-athletes with character, loyalty, determination and intensity.”

With his belief in the power of sports, England has been able to use the resources available to him to add the spirit of giving to his love of athletics.

The project was designed and installed within the year. Dedicated in September 2012 and modeled after the existing stadium structure, the first-class design features a grand entrance gate and a large open pavilion to welcome campus visitors. It allows ONU to better account for numbers of guests, charge admission and host playoff games for high school tournaments.

Proof positive that “once a polar bear always a polar bear,” England has continued to contribute his time to ONU in other ways, as well. A member of Northern’s Athletic Hall of Fame committee since 1989, he’s the group’s longest-standing member.

“Being on the Hall of Fame committee, it’s been so good to get to know super-athletes, super-students, who’ve exceled before, during and after their college days,” he says. “It’s just amazing to get to know these graduates from Ohio Northern University who have gone on to do just fantastic things with their lives.”

England has done fantastic things, too, and he’s has been generous to ONU in every sense of the word. He’s given his talents and treasure to make ONU stronger and help ensure that ONU stays a winner both on and off the field.

“My experience at Ohio Northern was wonderful. And when you have a good experience, you want others to have a good experience also – or better.”

CEO ON THE ROADMichael W. Rencheck, BSEE ’83, ACIT ’08, can be hard to track down. As president and chief executive officer of AREVA Inc., a nuclear and renewable energy company, he spends 80 percent of his time out on the road, which leaves him with 60 days a year to spend at the company’s North American offices in Lynchburg, Va.

“We have 41 locations in 19 states and three provinces in Canada, and we have customers literally from coast to coast in the U.S. and in Canada, and several in Europe and Asia,” he says. “I travel a lot, because you need to be where the customers are and with the people.”

In addition, AREVA’s world headquarters are in Paris, so Rencheck travels to France for management committee meetings about six times a year. “The people at AREVA are great to work with – and the cuisine is a special treat!”

A career like this, one of such a globetrotting nature, took shape in small towns.

FROM ONE SMALL TOWN TO ANOTHERRencheck came to Ohio Northern University and Ada from Slovan, a small coalmining town in western Pennsylvania. Originally set to attend a much larger school in West Virginia, Rencheck looked to ONU after receiving a bit of personal attention from the dean of the College of Engineering, Lawrence H. Archer, BSCE ’47, ACIT ’82, H of F ’88.

“Dean Archer sent me a hand-written letter,” Rencheck says. “I wrote him back, and he actually corresponded again. After that

interaction, I went to Ohio Northern sight-unseen. I thought, ‘If the dean would take that time to interact with a student, it must be a special place.’”

This sort personal interaction didn’t stop with Archer. Rencheck still recalls the names of those who helped him the most. Professors like Dr. Bruce E. Johansen, Dennis W. Herr, BSEE ’73, Dr. James L. Klingenberger, BSEE ’49, ACIT ’82, Hon. D. ’95, Ronald E. Guentzler, and Dr. John P. Stahl, BSEE ’57, quickly come to Rencheck’s mind as he looks back.

“At Northern, you got to know all of your professors at a personal level. They knew your name and still do today.” Rencheck continues. “Dr. Johansen, in particular, always made classes fun. He always you excited about what engineers could do and could be.”

For Rencheck, what “could be” was a long career in the power industry, one that began with a summer internship with the Duquesne Light Company at Beaver Valley Power Station.

From there, Rencheck continued his career as director of engineering at Public Service Electric & Gas Company Salem Nuclear Station, director of nuclear engineering and projects for Florida Power Corporation’s Crystal River Nuclear Station, and in a variety of positions with American Electric Power, including senior vice president of engineering and projects and senior vice president and chief nuclear officer of AEP’s Nuclear Generation Group. He came to AREVA in January 2009.

In charge of powerdegrees of operational excellence, which means high standards for safety and quality. “In the nuclear business, you have to have that,” he says. “Whether we are mining uranium, fabricating nuclear fuel, servicing operating reactors, building new reactors or renewable energy plants, or storing and recycling used fuel, when we perform with excellence, all other aspects of the business are robust.”

REST AND RELAxATION?Rencheck lives in Powell, Ohio, with his wife, Carol. They have two sons, both of whom seek to follow their father into engineering. “Mitchell’s a freshman at Purdue, and Michael’s a junior at Ohio State,” he says.

Outside the office, Rencheck and his wife enjoy the beach, golfing, biking, hiking and exercise. The couple also works with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that provides homes for those less fortunate. Considering the amount of time he spends away, when he does return home, Rencheck likes to catch up with work around the house, and he even considers yard work to be a favorite pastime.

“There’s something about cutting your grass,” he explains. “It gives you time to think. And when you’re done, it looks and smells good, and it feels like you’ve accomplished something,”

With a career that regularly takes him from Paris to Canada and all over the United States, Rencheck has certainly accomplished more than just a well-manicured lawn.

Dr. Michael grandillo, BA ’79, believes in the power of education to change lives. Ohio Northern University planted the seed for his conviction as an undergraduate, and he’s nurtured it throughout his entire career in higher education administration.

Grandillo recently became president of Lakeland College in Wisconsin. A large ONU contingent comprised of college friends, former professors, mentors and president emeritus Dr. DeBow Freed, Hon. D. ’99,

attended his inauguration ceremony to

show support and celebrate his career milestone.

Grandillo, who felt humbled by the overwhelming support, says it illustrates the impact that small universities often have on individuals. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the foundation I received at Ohio Northern,” he says.

received a well-rounded education at ONU in the 1970s. He joined the Sigma Pi fraternity and became involved in theatre, two activities that weren’t on his “radar screen” when he came to campus, but which led to personal growth.

After graduation, Grandillo accepted a position as an admissions counselor at ONU. During the seven years he spent at ONU as a student and employee, he developed the conviction that he could make a difference through a career in higher education. He also encountered many friends and mentors, including Dr. David Saffell, ACIT ’97, his advisor and political science professor, and Dr. Amar Bhattacharya, H of F ’00, his soccer coach. Some individuals, like William (Bill) Robinson, BSEd ’61, ACIT ’71, ACIT ’89, Hon. D. ’05, H of F ’05, he still relies on 30-plus years later.

Grandillo settled in Tiffin, Ohio, where he met his wife, Nancy, had two children, and spent

31 years building a significant legacy. He served in admissions and development for 14 years at Heidelberg College. He then joined the administration at Tiffin University, serving for 17 years as vice president for development and public affairs and as an adjunct instructor of political science.

He made important contributions to both institutions, helping to grow their endowments, increase enrollment and expand the campuses. At Tiffin University, for example, he oversaw the acquisition of 110-acres, the construction of 11 new buildings, a nature preserve, an athletic complex and a retirement village, and the expansion of three existing buildings.

A history buff, Grandillo authored a book on the history of Tiffin University and wrote a chapter in Cradles and Conscious: Ohio’s Independent College and Universities. He also became involved in local politics and community affairs, serving for 17 years as a member of the Tiffin City Council and volunteering with numerous local nonprofits and community organizations.

Having established deep ties in Tiffin, Grandillo and his wife struggled with the decision of a career move. But ultimately, Grandillo was eager for a new challenge, and a college presidency seemed the logical next step.

Grandillo received a master’s degree from the University of Dayton and a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education and Italian renaissance history from the University of Toledo. In his free time, he enjoys travel, golf, hiking, beekeeping, history and public policy.

Lakeland College, located near the vibrant city of Sheboygan on the shores of Lake Michigan, is affiliated with the United church of Christ. Grandillo became Lakeland’s 15th president during the school’s sesquicentennial year, assuming responsibility for carrying on the school’s rich educational tradition.

Freed believes Lakeland is a good fit for Grandillo. He spoke at Grandillo’s inauguration, joined on stage by the three

other college presidents under whom Grandillo served. “He is extraordinarily well-prepared for this position,” Freed stated in his address. “I believe Lakeland will prosper greatly under his wise and energetic leadership.”

Just a few months into his new role, Grandillo has already met with hundreds of faculty, alumni, staff and students and listened to their stories. “I enjoy making and maintaining strong personal relationships,” he says. “I see my role as a facilitator and a good

steward. I want to bring out the best in people and get them thinking about the future and how we can improve the lives of students.”

While Grandillo has many objectives he hopes to achieve as Lakeland’s president, he says his primary goal is to ensure “access and opportunity.” He’s especially interested in opening doors for first-generation students who can often change the future course of their entire family by becoming the first to attend college.

“I view education as the great equalizer. It gives people access to the American dream and a better life,” he says. “Education is about getting involved and learning to get along; it’s about teamwork and leadership and coming to know who you are. Small universities provide that experience, and that’s where I want to be.”

Not many people have a pie-in-the-sky dream come true. Elissa McCracken, an ONU pharmacy student, is one of the lucky few.

As a little girl, McCracken would fantasize about being one of the glamorous and accomplished Miss America contestants in lovely gowns she would see on television. And incredibly, this January she’ll proudly wear the

Miss Ohio banner and compete against 52 other contestants for the coveted title.

“A little boy has a greater chance of being in the Super Bowl someday than a little girl does of being in the Miss America pageant,” she says. “So I’m thrilled to be living my dream.”

McCracken started participating in pageants two years ago for the scholarship money. To date, she’s won more than $20,000 to help pay for college. At the Miss Ohio competition in June, she decided to just have fun and let her true self shine through. The judges liked what they saw and crowned her the winner. McCracken was so stunned when her name was announced, she crumpled to her knees.

As Miss Ohio, she has embraced the opportunity to be a role model to young people. She selected her platform of “Stop Cyber Bullying” because of her personal experience with being bullied in middle school. “I was shy and didn’t have a lot of friends,” she recalls. “The rude and anonymous instant messages I received totally crushed my self-confidence.”

She overcame the bullying by focusing on her music (she’s an accomplished pianist) and finding friends who shared her interest in music and the performing arts. She didn’t tell anyone about the cyber bullying, which was a mistake, she says.

This year, McCracken has visited middle schools across the state to share her story and educate teenagers on how to stop cyber bullying. She receives numerous posts on her Facebook fan page from students who’ve been impacted by her talk. “I’m proof that just because you’ve been bullied, it doesn’t have to define you,” she says. “You can overcome it and go on to do wonderful things.”

To fulfill her many duties as Miss Ohio, McCracken took the year off from pharmacy school. She misses being on campus and seeing her friends and professors on a regular basis. A Waynesburg, Pa., native, she has strong family ties to ONU. Her grandfather Jack “Jay” McCracken, BSPh ’53, and father, Jeffrey McCracken, BSPh ’81, are both Northern pharmacy school graduates, and her uncle, Jack McCracken, JD ’90, ACIT ’99, graduated from ONU’s law school. She enjoys meeting fellow Polar Bears at many of her events. “I run into so many ONU alumni, and that’s been an awesome part of this journey,” she says.

The Miss America pageant took place on Jan. 12, 2013, in Las Vegas. McCracken prepared herself mentally and physically for a grueling week of interviews, appearances, rehearsals and filming. But when her time came to stroll onto the stage in front of a live television audience, she put on her biggest smile and savored every moment.

On Nov. 18, 2011, The Honorable Jessica E. Price Smith, JD ’97, was appointed to a 14-year term on the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, during an investiture ceremony at the Howard M. Metzenbaum U.S. Courthouse in Cleveland.

During the ceremony, Price Smith referenced Oh, the Places You’ll Go! – the popular Dr. Seuss book that looks at life and its many challenges – as a roadmap for her own academic and career success. She says she was first given a copy of the book by her high school calculus teacher, one of many people who mentor Price Smith as she sought the career she first dreamed about as a young girl.

Growing up, she had a close relationship with her parents but noticed that not every child had the same benefits that she did. In some instances, friends would be wrongly accused of misdeeds with nobody coming to their aid. “This seemed to me so wrong, and I desperately wanted to do something to help them prove their innocence,” she says.

This quality of looking out for one’s friends and neighbors stayed with Price Smith. “I’m the type of person who wants to give everything I can give,” she says. “Lots of people just want the glory and credit, but I have never been afraid to take responsibility.”

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! became a symbol of her dedication and work ethic during her journey from high school to college, from college to law school, from her first jobs in the judicial system to her current position as the first African-American judge on the United States Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Ohio. Price Smith says she is proud of her career as a groundbreaker for African-American women, and she hopes her example

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Written by Geoff Schuttwill lead other young people, especially minorities, to follow and succeed in their own dreams.

While a student in ONU’s Pettit College of Law, she was a member of the Law Review and Moot Court Board of Advocates, served on the Law Review Judicial Review Board, and was inducted into the Willis Society – the highest academic honor society at the College of Law.

She says she valued the strong interaction with faculty at ONU as one of the hallmarks of her success. In particular, Price Smith credited David C. Crago, former dean of the College of Law, for giving what she called “the best advice I ever received.”

“Dean Crago told me to look for who was pulling for me – to see who that person was, and he was right. I have had

a series of ‘champions’ who taught me to keep pushing the envelope and find creative solutions to problems as well as the importance of being part of one’s community and to always give back to those who have given to you,” Price Smith says.

The judge began her legal career as the law clerk to the Honorable Randolph Baxter, United States bankruptcy judge for the Northern District of Ohio, whom she succeeded on the bench.

“As law clerk for Judge Baxter, I first got the sense I wanted to be a judge as well,” she remarks. Upon deciding this as her career direction, she crafted her future step-by-step to gain the necessary experience she would later need to be selected for her current position. “Once again, I was prepared to give everything I had,” she says. And, she pointed out, she still carried with her that same copy of Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

In addition to her career in the public arena, Price Smith balances her professional life with service to her community as a member of various civic boards and through her membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She and her husband, Gregory, are the proud parents of one son.

Dr. DeBow Freed, Hon. D. ’99, Ohio Northern University president emeritus, spent 65 years of his life serving his country and young people. He was honored at West Point, N.Y., for a lifetime of service to the nation by the dedication of a a room in his name at the famed Thayer Hotel on the campus of the United States Military Academy.

“Mrs. Freed and I are enormously grateful to the wonderful people with whom we have

been privileged to serve, and who have made it a greater joy to serve,” says Freed.

Freed grew up on a farm near Hendersonville, Tenn., entered West Point as a teenager and graduated after three years in 1946 at age 20.

His military service included seven years overseas in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Iran and the Middle East. He also headed the nuclear branch of the coordinating agency for atomic matters for the military services and earned graduate degrees in nuclear

West Point Honors Dr. Freedscience and nuclear engineering. He spent his final years in the military at his alma mater, teaching physics at West Point, and retired after 23 years of service with the rank of colonel.

Freed and his wife, Catherine, enjoyed military service, but decided they could make a strong contribution over a longer period of time in higher education. They wanted to interact with young people on a daily basis and directly impact their lives.

Private, church-related colleges appealed to the Freeds. “Private colleges have a strong public service component,” notes Freed. “They respect the qualities held high in American life.”

Freed dedicated 42 years of his career to higher education, presenting diplomas to more than 20,000 graduates in law, engineering, pharmacy, business and other areas. He served as dean of Mount Union College and president of Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill., for five years respectively.

He then became president of Ohio Northern University, serving for 20 years in this role. He later served as president of the University of Findlay for seven years. All four institutions prospered under his competent leadership.

According to Freed, he and Catherine considered their time at ONU to be a keystone of their public service. “We have enormous admiration and affection for the people of Ohio Northern,” he says. “We continue to follow ONU matters with interest and with admiration for the accomplishments of ONU alumni.”

Freed’s career as a college president is unique for a West Point graduate. In 1987, the chief of staff of the Army added the phrase “to inspire each cadet to a lifetime of service to the nation” to the mission statement for West Point cadets. The document that created this change singled out “the selfless service of a 1946 graduate, DeBow Freed, as an example of the lifetime of service to the nation which is desired.”

West Point honored Freed at the Thayer Hotel room dedication ceremony on July 11, 2012. Representatives of Ohio Northern and the University of Findlay attended the event.

The Thayer Hotel, situated on a hill overlooking the Hudson River, is considered a “national historic treasure” and hosts many important national and international people. Displays in dedicated guest rooms reflect the life and contributions of the person to whom the room is dedicated. The main conference rooms and public spaces of the hotel are named for prominent figures in American life. “(DeBow Freed) is an inspiration to all graduates who seek to continue service to the nation after they retire their uniform, by educating America’s future generations,” states the Thayer Hotel’s website.

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PRESENTS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD

The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration honored Oscar J. Mifsud, BSBA ’70, ACIT ’09, with an Outstanding Service Award on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The award, given annually at Homecoming, honors individuals who have provided sustained

and outstanding service to, and whose contributions have positively impacted, the College of Business Administration and Ohio Northern. This is the fourth year that an Outstanding Service Award has been presented by the college.

“Oscar and his wife, Judy, believe in the saying ‘pay it forward,’ and this comes out not just in their philanthropic work and giving, but in volunteering to do service,” says James Fenton, dean of the College of Business Administration. “He and his wife live by a philosophy that says, ‘When you are blessed with success, you have a responsibility to share that blessing in order to make a difference in the lives of others.’ That philosophy includes the giving of expertise and time to our institution.”

Mifsud is the president and CEO of the Mifsud Group LLC, a private investment and Management Company, and the former president, CEO and owner of SMR Aerospace.

Mifsud has generously offered his time to ONU. He has served on the ONU Board of Trustees since 2000 and, in 2007, was named vice-chairman of the board and a member of its executive committee. He also is a member of the board’s finance and trusteeship committees. In the University’s latest highly successful capital campaign, which raised more than $110 million, Mifsud served as national campaign chair.

In addition to his work as a board member, Mifsud has facilitated and supported a number of ONU programs, such as the College of Business Administration’s mentorship program and student-employer networking events. He has championed the “Paws for Thanks” program and the alumni golf outing played annually in Florida.

LEHMAN IS ROBINSON YOUNG ALUMNI OF THE YEAROhio Northern University named Ronda K. (Spencer) Lehman, BSPh ’98, vice president of operations at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, as the 2012 recipient of the William L. Robinson Young Alumni of the Year Award.

The award is given each year to an individual who is committed to Ohio Northern University, his/her profession and the community. Jon Sprague, dean of the ONU Raabe College of Pharmacy, nominated Lehman.

“Ronda is an individual of impeccable integrity, is compassionate and committed nearly to a fault, and imposes upon herself expectations and standards of performance that far exceed the typical range of adequacy or sufficiency,” he says. “Ronda is indeed a successful young alum of Ohio Northern University.”

In 1998, she received the Mylan Pharmaceutical Excellence in Pharmacy Award. In 2003, she was named to the Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society in Business Administration.

Since 2003, she has served as an adjunct faculty member at ONU and continues to mentor pharmacy students on rotations and assist with perspective student interviews.

Lehman was honored prior to Ohio Northern’s Homecoming football game on Oct. 6.

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY HONORS THREE WITH DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy honored three alumni with Distinguished Alumni Awards in October. Sen. David Burke, BSPh ’90, Hanley Wheeler, BSPh ’82, and Suzanne Eastman-Wuest, BSPh ’74, Hon. D. ’09, were recognized for their outstanding career accomplishments and their contributions to ONU.

Burke represents the families and communities of Ohio’s 26th senate district. His extensive knowledge and experience regarding the health care industry led Burke to be named vice-chairman of the Senate Health, Human Services and Aging Committee. For his work in the legislature, Burke was named Legislator of the Year in 2012 by NAMI Ohio. He also has been recognized by the Ohio Pharmacists Association (2012 Good Government Award), the Ohio Psychological Association (2012 Public Service Award), Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging (2011 Elected Official Advocacy Award), and Voices for Ohio’s Children (Champion for Children’s Healthcare).

Wheeler is the senior vice president of operations in the east division for CVS Caremark, which is based in Indianapolis, Ind. He is responsible for more than 5,200 stores in 25 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In 1994, Wheeler began working for CVS Caremark as vice president and then senior vice president. From 1981-94, Wheeler worked for Revco as pharmacist in Cleveland, and as a district manager in New Mexico, regional manager in Dallas, Texas, director of operations in Twinsburg, Ohio, regional director in Charlotte, N.C., and regional vice president in Indianapolis. Wuest, who received an honorary doctorate of pharmacy from ONU in 2009, is the executive director of clinical services for Catalina Health Resources, a health care information services firm. She served as president of the Ohio Pharmacists Association from 1987-88, the first woman to do so. She was appointed to an eight-year term on the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy in 1999. Additionally, she serves on the ONU College of Pharmacy Advisory Board.

Brandi Nicole (Stover) Bruns, BA ’02, has gone down as one of the most recognized award-winners in Ohio Northern volleyball history. She was named to the ACVA

All-American Second Team twice and the Great Lake Region First Team three times. She earned a National Player of the Week honor and was a First Team All-OAC honoree three times and OAC Player of the Year twice. She currently ranks second in ONU history in career assists with 5,726, fifth in career service aces with 198, and 10th in career hit percentage at .288. She led the team in assists in each of the four years she played and holds an ONU single match record with 81 assists.

Beth Ann (Breudigam) gribler, BSBA ’85, was not your typical college athlete. She was a two-sport star, earning three varsity letters in volleyball and

basketball. She excelled on the volleyball court and received numerous awards along the way: two First Team All-Conference

selections as well as two First Team All-Ohio nods. In addition, she was nominated for

the Academic All-America team and was named to the All-Ohio Academic Second Team. Gribler’s volleyball teams were conference champions in each of her four seasons. Gribler ranks seventh in school history with a career hitting percentage of .292. She led the team in hitting percentage twice and in digs once.

Nancy Jean (Shoemaker) Keith, BA ’89, was as dominate a softball player that ONU has ever seen. Known to most everyone as “Shoe,” Keith was named to

the All-OAC First Team three times as a Polar Bear. She led the 1987 ONU softball team with a batting average of .437 and 43 base hits. For her career, she accumulated 123 hits, which places her in 23rd place in school history. She excelled in the classroom, too, and was selected to the Academic All-OAC First Team three times, the Academic America Third Team once and the First Team All-Central Region once.

Bradley Ross Longberry, BA ’78, started every game in his ONU career, 104 in all. This was an OAC and ONU record at the time and still ranks third in school history.

He was a First-Team All-OAC selection twice and won numerous team awards, including “Chairman of the Board” three times, the “Playmaker Award” twice and team MVP once. He currently ranks second in ONU history with 1,036 career rebounds. He also posted 1,391 points, which is 11th best in school history. Longberry led the team in rebounding for three seasons and grabbed 331 rebounds in 1977, the sixth most in ONU single-season history.

Robert garner Lydic, BS ’97, achieved a number of accomplishments as a track runner at Ohio Northern. He helped the Polar Bears win the school’s first

OAC track championship. He won the OAC championship in the 800 meters as a freshman. He was an NcAA qualifier, too. Lydic set six records while running at Ohio Northern. In indoor track, he owned or shared school records in the 500- and 800-meter runs and the 4-by-400 meter relay. For outdoor track, Lydic set the school record in the 400-meter run as well as the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 meter relays. These records still rank in the top 10 in school history.

John Martin Wechter, BSPh ’78, is one of the most dominant runners in Ohio Northern history. He was a four-year letter-winner and was voted team MVP in 1974.

He accumulated the most points in track events in each of the four seasons that he ran at Ohio Northern. “Wec,” as he was known, is the co-record-holder in the 100-yard dash, twice running it in 9.9 seconds. On top of that, he also ran the 200-meter dash in 21.44 seconds, ONU’s longest-standing school record. Wechter was a four-time NcAA qualifier and notched an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter run in 1976.

In Memoriam

Friendsleila E. Alden, Pacific Grove, calif., May 7, 2012. Leila attended Wellesley College, Lawrence University, Mills College and Ohio Northern University. She specialized in early childhood education and was the director of the University of Iowa Preschool Lab (now the Institute of Child Behavior and Development). In the 1970s, she spent more than a year living in Afghanistan helping to improve its education system. Just outside of Iowa City, she owned Spindrift Farm, where she raised many animals, rode thoroughbred horses and bred Hackney ponies. Her Hackney pony, Spindrift Fascination, won Junior Hackney Pony World Champion in 1987, Reserve World Champion Hackney Pony Mare in 1990 and Grand Championship at the Midwest Charity Show in 1991. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carroll R. Alden, BSME 1915, BSEE 1916, and Leila Alden, BA 1905, BA 1912.

Michael A. Church, Zanesville, Ohio, June 22, 2012. Michael graduated from Rosecrans High School in 1991 and attended Ohio Northern University. At Northern, he lettered in football. He was a store manager with Office Max in Columbus, Ohio. He is survived by many family and friends.

He also was head of the math department at Illinois Wesleyan University and taught at Indiana University, University of Kentucky and University of Missouri. degree in chemistry and was president of his senior class. He owned an insurance agency for 65 years and worked at Westinghouse Electric for 40 years. He was a member of Lima Elks Lodge, Lima Eagles Club, Lima YWCA and Lima YMCA Heritage Club. He was a charter member of the Lima/Alco Sertoma Club and served six terms as president. He also was on the board of directors of the Children’s Developmental Center of Lima for more than 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Schwinn) Klingler, AA ’56.

Victoria Anne Manley, Keeling, Va., June 17, 2012. Anne received her undergraduate degree in education and juris doctorate from Ohio State University. She practiced law in Athens, Ohio, and then attended Temple University to receive her LMA. She taught in the Claude W. Pettit College of Law at Ohio Northern University from 1992 to 1997. After teaching, she was a senior attorney for the Virginia Legal Aid Society and retired in 2008. She is survived by many family and friends.

Marion L. “Monk” Price, Harlingen, Texas, May 13, 2012. Monk served in the U.S. Army in World War II. At Northern, Monk played football and was a part of Sigma Pi fraternity. He left Northern to work for Sunkist Growers in California. He worked many years in the produce business and went on to own a produce brokerage business. He was an avid golfer and member of the Harlingen Country Club. He is survived by many family and friends.

LaVonne L. (Tonkinson) Pedlow, Lima, Ohio, Feb. 5, 2012. LaVonne graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University in 1952. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She was an elementary teacher at Emerson School and a preschool teacher at Market Presbyterian Church and Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a board

member of the YWCA, an Allen County Museum docent, and a member of Art Study Club, Lotus Club and the Junior Service League. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Edward B. Pedlow Jr., LLB ’54.

Alan M. Stalmah, Valparaiso, Ind., July 26, 2012. Alan was a lecturer and theatre technical director at Ohio Northern University from 1992 to 1996 and then at Valparaiso University from 1996 to 2010. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Valparaiso and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, who also worked for Northern in the Communication Skills Center.

Jane Elliott (Utterback) Weimer, St. Marys, Ohio, July 26, 2012. Jane attended numerous universities including Transylvania University, Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University and the University of Denver. She served as a professional librarian in Heterick Memorial Library at Ohio Northern University, retiring in 1987 after 18 years. At Northern, her activities included Kappa Phi advisor, Faculty Wives Club, ONU Women, Faculty Religious Affairs committee and Beta Phi Mu library honorary. In 1996, she and her husband were selected Ada Citizens of the Year. She is survived by her husband, David.

1931Mary E. (green) Bumstead, AA, Venice, Fla., July 18, 2012. Mary was a member of Theta Phi Delta sorority (now Zeta Tau Alpha) while at Ohio Northern. She lived to be 101 and enjoyed teaching, Peace Corps and volunteering. She taught at Sunbury Elementary in Sunbury, Ohio, and Harman Elementary in Oakwood, Ohio. She was elected to the Education Hall of Honor in Oakwood, Ohio, for her caring attitude and wonderful teaching. In retirement, she served as a reading specialist for two years in Liberia with the Peace Corps. She received a certificate of Appreciation from the Ministry of Education in Liberia for her services. She volunteered through Literacy Volunteers of America and Zeta Tau Alpha alumnae chapters. She was awarded the Zeta Tau Alpha Outstanding Alumnae Award in 1990.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Augustine.

Joseph “Joe” P. Mallone, BSEd, JD ’50, H of F ’70, ACIT ’93, Geneva, Ohio, July 25, 2012. Prior to attending ONU, Joe was inducted into the Ashtabula County Football Hall of Fame for his playing at Geneva High School. He was president of Labor Local No. 19500 in Geneva, where he worked in several factories. He was very active in sports at Ohio Northern, including football, basketball, golf and track. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and the Ohio National Guard while on campus. After graduation, he taught, coached and served as athletic director at Paulding High School and Geneva High School. At the start of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander and earned two Bronze Stars. He also served during the korean conflict. He worked as a realtor while attending law school at Western Reserve University and was named Ashtabula County

Realtors’ Man of the Year in 1947. He served as assistant Paulding County prosecutor, mayor of Geneva for two terms and director of court services in the Ashtabula County Juvenile Court. He was elected Western County Court Judge and then to Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court. 1949Don M. Purdy, JD, Celina, Ohio, June 24, 2012. Don attended Case Western University and later attended Ohio University before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then attended Northern and was a part of Delta Theta Phi. He practiced law in Celina, Ohio, and served as juvenile and probate court judge in Mercer County. He served on the Board of Trustees of First National Bank of Celina and on the Celina City Schools Board of Education. Jack E. Corle Sr.Dr. Jack E. Corle Sr., ACIT ’95, 82, died on Nov. 21, 2012, at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice. Jack retired in 1992 as ONU’s vice president for student affairs, a position he held since 1979. He was director of counseling from 1972-79, serving at a very critical time in University history. With his congenial style, Jack weathered the student uprisings of the ’70s.

Formerly, Jack was a teacher, guidance counselor and professor of education at the University of Cincinnati. He was a graduate of Greenville High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Miami University and master’s and doctoral degrees from Pennsylvania State University.

Jack was born June 29, 1930, in Greenville, Ohio, to Clyde G. and Opal Foltz Corle, who preceded him in death. On June 28, 1951, he married Carolyn Sue Ungericht, who survives. Both Jack and Sue were active in the Airstream RV Travel Club. He was a member of Van Wert United Methodist Church, a mason and member of the Scottish Rite, and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa and Iota Alpha Delta honoraries.

Survivors include son Jack Edward, BA ’78, and his wife, Laura Jean (Barnhardt) Corle, BFA ’77, of Findlay, Ohio, and daughters Rebecca Sue German of Van Wert, Ohio, and Amy E. Corle, BFA ’88, of Chicago. Services were held in Van Wert.

Matthew Mattmuller, BSPh, Aurora, Ohio, May 12, 2012. Matthew was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II. At Northern, he was involved in Kappa Psi and Kappa Epsilon. He was the owner of Aurora’s first pharmacy, Aurora Pharmacy. He served as mayor and councilman of Aurora. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1985 and was a charter member of American Legion Post 803. He was a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church and was involved in many other service organizations. Ervin E. Rohm, BSME, Wapakoneta, Ohio, June 6, 2012. Ervin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Westinghouse Corporation for more than 25 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ardath.

John E. Sandy, BSEd, Elida, Ohio, June 21, 2012. John played baseball while at Northern. He went on to receive his master’s degree from Bowling Green State University. He served Gomer and Elida Local Schools for more than 40 years as a teacher, coach and superintendent. After his retirement, he maintained 13 baseball fields in Elida and Gomer. He served as a trustee for Lima Baptist Temple and was inducted into the Elida High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He received the Service to Mankind Award from both the Sertoma Club and Optimist Club, and the Elida FFA Chapter’s Honorary Farmer’s Award. He is survived by his wife, Ruth.

1952Richard T. Edgerton, BSPh, Canton, Ohio, Aug. 1, 2012. Richard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. At ONU, he was a member of Kappa Psi fraternity. He was the owner of Edgerton Drug in Dalton, Ohio, and started the pharmacy at Wadsworth/Rittman Hospital. In 1982, he graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va. He served as a priest in various churches in Ohio, Michigan and wyoming. while in Buffalo, wyo., he was named Hospice Chaplain of the Year for the state of Wyoming for serving a local hospital. Smith Clinic in Marion, Ohio, and served in the U.S. Army. He earned a master’s degree in hospital pharmacy from the University of Michigan and served as a pharmacist at the school for 45 years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie.

1954Lowell H. Bramschreiber, BSPh, Green Bay, Wis., Aug. 12, 2011. Lowell served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Greenland with the weather service. He received a degree from Capital University prior to attending Northern, where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He was a pharmacist at Streu’s and Copps pharmacy. 1955Patricia “Pat” A. Dotson, BSEd, Lima, Ohio, July 23, 2012. Pat was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and played on the softball and basketball teams while at Northern. She received her master’s degree from St. Francis and retired from teaching in Lima City Schools. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church (now Trinity United Methodist Church) for more than 70 years. She served on the board of Top Mark Federal Credit Union and as a Girl Scout leader. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern

Star and founding member of the Order of Rainbow Girls. She is survived by many family and friends.

James D. Kuhn, BA, Lima, Ohio, June 18, 2012. James was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity while at Northern. He attended Boston University School of Theology and received a Master of Divinity from the United Seminary in Dayton. In the Methodist Church, he was ordained a deacon in the East Ohio Conference and an elder in the West Ohio Conference. He served many churches in Ohio, including Ada First United Methodist Church. He participated in many choirs, most notably the West Ohio Conference Ministers Choir for more than 40 years. He served on many district and conference committees and led two tours to the Holy Land. He is survived by his wife, Nancy.

1965Keith L. Houdeshell, BSEd, Arlington, Ohio, Aug. 25, 2012. Keith received a master’s degree from Heidelberg University. He retired from teaching and coaching girls’ softball and basketball at New Riegel High School after 33 years. He was a member of Arlington United Methodist Church and is survived by many family and friends.

1967Thomas E. Heydinger, JD, Norwalk, Ohio, July 9, 2012. Tom was a graduate of the Pontifical college Josephinum, the University of Dayton and Ohio Northern College of Law. After graduating law school, he served as a medical evacuation pilot in Vietnam and went on to serve in the Judge Advocate General Corps of the United States Army. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Army Air Medal for his exemplary service to the nation. He began his civil public service as county court judge in Crawford County, Ohio. In 1972, he was appointed assistant attorney general for the state of Ohio by Attorney General William J. Brown, JD ’67. He then was appointed by Governor John J. Gilligan in 1975 to the common pleas bench in Huron County. He served the people of Huron County for 28 years in the probate and juvenile division of that court. After his retirement, he sat by assignment of the Ohio Supreme Court as visiting judge in several counties in northern Ohio and on the Court of Appeals, Eighth Appellate District in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was recognized eight times by the Ohio Supreme Court for “Outstanding Judicial Service.” In 2008, he was appointed to the 58th District Ohio House of Representatives. He is survived by his wife, Peggy.

Nicholas D. Katzenbach, Hon. D., Trenton, N.J., May 8, 2012. Dr. Katzenbach served in several roles during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. He was a key player in many of the crucial moments in the 1960s including The Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, integration of school, The Warren Report, The Civil Rights Act and Vietnam. For his service to the country and civil rights, he was honored with a doctorate of public service at Ohio Northern. He is survived by many family and friends.

He served as a trustee and legal commissioner for the Buckeye Boys State program and was a member of the Robert wyckoff Post of the American Legion. After retiring, he rebuilt a vintage Lotus Europa. Michael D. Quinn, BSEd, Kenton, Ohio, Aug. 18, 2012. Michael sang in the chorus at Northern. He had owned Quinn’s Music and retired from the Kenton Times. He served as the organist at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for 32 years. He is survived by many family and friends.

He was a founding partner of the Graham & McClelland Law Firm in Zanesville, Ohio. He was appointed as a magistrate for the United States District court for five years and served as the village solicitor for 12 years. He also was a part owner of OK Coal and Concrete and EagleSticks Golf Club. He was a member of many organizations in Zanesville, including the Eagles, Moose Lodge, Am Vets, Muskingum River Advisory and Ducks Unlimited. He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna.

1974John g. gosling, BA, JD ’74, McArthur, Ohio, May 26, 2012. John was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity while at Northern. He served in the

U.S. Army as an MP prior to returning for his law degree. He served as prosecuting attorney for Vinton County for 12 years. He served as a trustee and legal commissioner for the Buckeye Boys State program and was a member of the Robert wyckoff Post of the American Legion. After retiring, he rebuilt a vintage Lotus Europa. He is survived by many family and friends.

1975Candy S. (Jones) Eby, BSPh, Dayton, Ohio, July 30, 2012. Candy was a member of Delta Zeta sorority while at Northern. She worked for 37 years at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Chapter #527, and she enjoyed playing cards. She is survived by many family and friends.

J. Scott Hreben, BA, South Lebanon, Ohio, May 22, 2012. Scott was a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and the wrestling team while at Northern. He received his master’s degree from Bowling Green State University. He retired after teaching for 34 years at Perrysburg High School. He coached wrestling at Perrysburg and other area schools. He was an avid Harley-Davidson motorcyclist. He is survived by his wife, Jill.

1979David g. Roach, BA, JD ’82, Clearcreek Township, Ohio, July 14, 2012. David was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Ohio Northern. He served as an attorney with his own practice. He is survived by his wife, Sherri.

1980Brian M. Fisher, JD, Las Vegas, Nev., May 25, 2012. Brian served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Kent State University before he attended Northern. He was a criminal defense and trial lawyer in Lima, Ohio, until he moved his practice to Las Vegas. He was an active motorcyclist, scuba diver, snow skier, race-boat driver and race-car driver. He is survived by many family and friends.

Benjamin F. Yale, JD, Lima, Ohio, June 13, 2012. Benjamin received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University. He owned Yale law Office and represented Select Milk Producers Inc. and Continental Dairy Products Inc. He served in the Muchinippi Theatre Group and the waynesfield-Goshen Community Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie.

1984Donald P. graham, BA, New Haven, Ind., May 29, 2012. Donald lettered in football while at Northern. He was a registered nurse at Lutheran Hospital Cardiac Cath Lab and the St. Joseph Regional Burn Unit. He is survived by his wife, Valerie.

1991ginger R. (Deal) Lumadue, BS, Sheffield lake, Ohio, June 23, 2012. Ginger was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at Northern. She worked as a bio-chemist and was a devoted mother and wife. She is survived by her husband, Leland.

1992Juan F. Miranda, JD, Wyoming, Pa., May 13, 2012. He attended Florida State University and received the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army as a counter-intelligence officer. He served in Europe and Vietnam, and received the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for valor and the Army Commendation Medal. He received a master’s degree from Temple University and was a social studies teacher and coach in New Jersey. He received his juris doctorate at Northern after retiring from teaching. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret.

2000Joshua C. gerken, BSBA, Ridgeville Corners, Ohio, June 24, 2012. Josh worked with his father and was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife, Nichole.

2008Emily L. Beers, BS, Corsica, Pa., Aug. 22, 2012. Emily was active in many biology and medical student groups at Northern. She was beginning an accelerated bachelor’s of science in nursing degree at Duke University. She was co-valedictorian of Clarion-Limestone High School in 2004. She was an accomplished pianist and a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and was a pianist for the choir. She is survived by many family and friends.

Beverly “Bev” Raab Daugherty Beverly “Bev” Raab Daugherty, 73, of Lexington, Ky., wife of gale E. Daugherty, H of F ’94, ACIT ’97, ACIT ’99, passed away on Nov. 26, 2012. Bev was best known for being a loyal fan of ONU basketball, as Gale served as head basketball coach at Northern from 1974-92. Bev was a retired teacher, and she was an active member of ONU Women and the Northern community.

Besides her husband, survivors include son Ernest, BA ’98, and his wife, Wendy (Lortz) Daugherty, BA ’94, of Ada, Ohio, and daughters Vicki Spar of Ada, Brenda Hanna of Kenton, Ohio, and Heather Stauft of Cincinnati. Services were held in Lexington, Ky., on Nov. 30. A memorial service was held in Ada on Feb. 9.
