3-4 Brunch in Bath, Speakers House and Reunion Dinner

Dear all,

As autumn weather takes hold and the leaves begin to turn, we are full swing ahead with a plethora of events that we hope will excite and delight you. Most importantly we hope that many of you will be able to attend some of them!

Those of you based in Bermuda will have heard of the visit by Dr James Slater in November, but should any non-Bermudians be in the area from 27 November to 2nd December please do get in touch for details.

Also in November are visits to Shanghai and Hong Kong. Sir Anthony, Alistair Lomax and I will be visiting Shanghai on the 6 November and Hong Kong on 7 November. Should you be able to attend an evening reception on either of those dates, please do let me know ([email protected]).

We are all looking forward to our two UK based events, in September and October. On 22nd September the Alumni Office will be visiting Bath, with Sir Anthony, for a brunch event at Browns Restaurant. The details can be found on page 3 and should anyone be in the area and free to attend, please do let us know on [email protected]. We would love to see lots of our alumni there, with their friends and families if possible.

Finally, our biggest party of the year, the Alumni Annual Reunion (2001-2005) will be held this year on Friday, 5 October at the Cinnamon Kitchen in London. Our grateful thanks to Deba Bardhan-Correia (MSc Service Management 2001), Acting Dean of Business, for her kind introduction to Vivek Singh (owner of the Cinnamon Club group). We have put together an evening full of wonderful food and atmosphere at a very different sort of restaurant. So for anyone who graduated during these years please do consider coming along. Details of the event, and how to buy tickets, can be found here: https://www.buckingham.ac.uk/event/alumni-reunion-dinner-2001-2005/

It will also be a great opportunity for those of you who studied with Deba to meet up with her and her husband, Jorge Correia (DPhil Service Management 2007) once again. Do come along. Also there will be Harin Sellahewa (DPhil, Computing 2007) and Interim Dean of Computing.

At that event we will also be awarding the “Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award”. Nominations can be made until Friday, 7th September so I would urge you to put forward any alumni you feel would be deserving of this accolade. Very best wishes,Anne

University News UBSOS

UBSOS (University of Buckingham Supporting Overseas Schooling) has recently supported Akwaaba Volunteers, a project based in Ghana. Akwaaba is run by local Buckingham girl, Jordan Palmer, and works

with disadvantaged communities and children to help improve conditions and quality of life. To read more please see: http://akwaabavolunteers.org.uk/

UBSOS donated money to Akwaaba which was used to improve a school house. New desks, cupboards and a whiteboard were also bought for the building. To suggest any future projects for UBSOS, please email:

The Duck Race

The annual University Duck Race took place on Wednesday 22 August 2018. Ducks were decorated and raced down the river Ouse outside the Tanlaw

Mill, and prizes (all kindly donated by local businesses) were given for the Best Dressed Duck

and the winner of the race itself. The Mayor of Buckingham, Jon Harvey, judged the ducks, and the race was started by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor

John Clapham.

Alongside the ducks themselves there were also a number of stalls, games and a BBQ to keep visitors

entertained.

All profits from the event went towards UBSOS (University of Buckingham Supporting Overseas

Schooling) and the event raised a fantastic total of £553. This money will likely be donated to an orphanage for disabled children in India. To learn more about UBSOS and the projects it

supports, please see page 10.

The University's Estates Bursar, Colin Stocker, has recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, raising money for Cancer

Research UK.

Unfortunately after 4 days of trekking and climbing (to over 5,300 metres) the altitude got the better of him and he had to turn back just 500 meters away from

the summit.

Colin has raised £3500 so far, but will be leaving his donations page open for a

little longer: https://bit.ly/2N1KS5R

Well done Colin!

An Update From the Vice-Chancellor

I've just returned from a wonderful four weeks off and feel fantastic for the break.

It won't be long until i am travelling again. I am currently planning a trip to China with Anne Matsuoka (Head of Alumni and Graduation) and Alistair Lomax (Director of Development) on 6 - 7 November. We will be hosting alumni events n Shanghai on 6 November and Hong Kong on 7 November. It would be wonderful to see you.

I'm very much enjoying the positive feeling on campus at the moment. This time of year always makes us feel energetic, expectant

and excited as we wait to welcome our largest intake in September. This year we have seen the highest student numbers in our history, with any new students due to start their studies with us in the coming weeks. Each intake is different and I look forward to personally meeting our new starters at the next 'Meet the VC, Beer and Pizza' event in October.

The Vinson Building is nearly completed and has transformed the Hunter Street Campus. We hope the building will become a hub for study and socialisation with a cafe on the ground floor. It is set to open its doors in November and we are counting down the days!

We're also counting down the days until Graduation 2019 and also our first Medical School Graduation in June 2019. Most of those Graduating in March will be coming into their final term with us and preparing for their last exams. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best of luck, and to remind them that the University will be a part of them for the rest of their lives. My colleagues in the Alumni Office will always provide a friendly face to remind them of their place in the Buckingham family.

Hoping to see you soon,

Anthony
