After digging up lost facts for nearly 40 years, Hindu College’s former principal Dr Kavita A Sharma jotted down some unknown facts and never-seen-before photographs about the college in a book titled Hindu College Delhi: A People’s Movement. The book, co-authored by WD Mathur, was released by the Old Students Association (OSA) of Hindu College on Saturday. According to Sharma, the book contains authentic material about the college and has

been put together after visiting libraries, going through archives, meeting individuals and scanning locations. “In 1974, during the diamond jubilee celebrations, Dr Bharat Ram had told the then principal of the college to bring out a book on the history of the college. However, due to severe unavailability of facts, it could not happen then. The idea lingered with me though. Ever since that year, I have wanted to bring this book out,” she said.

The process of getting information was not an easy one for Sharma, thus, it took her almost 40 years to finally write the book. She said, “It was genuinely very difficult to get information since there were no official records of it. That’s why I approached WD Mathur so that I had someone to push me into following this project. In fact I had to file an RTI to know the original members of Hindu College. I caught hold of a few documents which provided me with links and evidence to whatever I had thought of as hearsay.”

The book was released by Justice AK Sikri. While releasing the book he said, “It is important for the alumni of an institution to promote and strengthen their alma mater. Though I’m not from Hindu, I can vouch for the institution and this book is an insight into the values it imparts.”

The Old Students Association of Hindu College honoured its alumni, who have made

their mark in their respective fields, at a recently-held event in the capital. Arnab

Goswami was honoured with an award for excellence in journalism. Neha Khanna

won the award under the Young Achievers' category in the field of media. Arun Pandya

and VBL Mathur were felicitated with the lifetime achievement award. Rachana Yadav

  • was honoured for her achievement in the field of classical dance (Kathak).

Kavita Sharma released a book on the occasion. Talking about her book, Sharma said,

"I'm very emotional right now. The idea to pen this book on the legacy and history of

Hindu College was first suggested by Bharat Ram, the chairman, in 1974." Justice AK

Sikri, the chief guest here, said, "I'm happy to see that the alumni of Hindu College, who

have gained eminence in various spheres, have been helping the college maintain its

traditions." The rivalry between St Stephen's College and Hindu was visible in the words

of the awardees. After receiving the award, Goswami said, "Debating was something I

learned from this college. During my postgraduation days, I used to say I don't belong to

St Stephen's, and that's why I debate like this."

Lalit Bhasin, the OSA president of Hindu College, said, "Over the years, this function has

become a must-attend event, and eminent alumni participate in large numbers here."

Hindu college alumnus, former principal pen book on history of college ZoomBookmarkSharePrintListenTranslate

NEW DELHI: The former principal of Hindu College and an alumnus have come together to

pen a book on the contribution of the college and its students in the country’s nationalist

movement and the various trials they had to face.

The authors—Kavita Sharma, former principal of the Hindu College, and WD Mathur, an

alumnus — released the book as a part of the Old Students’ Association’s annual alumni awards

    ceremony.

The book deals with the history of the college, including the time it battled ‘a hostile

administration that feared the patriotic fervour of the college.’

The association also recognized 13 eminent alumni at the event.
