The middle school’s ADDRESS and its LOCATION are STILL the SAME PLACE as was our dear OLD GW HIGH! There will be a buffet style luncheon served of sandwiches, cold cuts, condiments, various rolls, breads, water, sodas, coffee and cookies. It will be held in the CAFETERIA of our former high school. Temporary signs will be posted to direct you to the check-in entrance. The GWAA Board has decided to hold this event in our old school in order to give everyone a chance to visit and reminisce about the joyful memories of our high school days as well as to see the new building additions which features a new library, classrooms and outside set-up. We look forward to having all of you come to the school and enjoy your visit to a place where we spent some of the best and worst years of our young lives. As we grow older, memories are all we have and I’m sure this place will bring lots of memories back to us. Another reason for having the Spring Luncheon at the school is to provide a suitable and fitting venue for presenting the completed results of our GWAA Legacy Project to our members. The project is now finished and there will be a presentation and viewing of a selection of the CD COMPASS yearbooks at this meeting. It will be held in the GWMS Media Room (Library). This facility is close to the school cafeteria, so it will be very convenient for all those who are interested to view it. The “Legacy Project” which was designed to convert nearly 40 years of our yearbooks (1935-1974) into a non-deteriorating storable digital format and compact discs (CDs). When completed, the GWAA plan was to donate a MASTER DIGITAL COPY of the complete set of COMPASS yearbooks to the George Washington Middle School ...

We currently have 2,298 classmates listed asDeceased and 3,266 listed as Lost; 4 of those are Honorary Members.REMEMBER – our information may not always be current. Please provide updates if your information changes; check our website atwww.GWHSAA.com to ensure the email address we have is current; and, contact me if you have new information on any other GWHSattendee. As always, we thank you for your membership and your continued support of our G.W. High School Alumni Association.PLEASE STAY IN TOUCH! Peggy Wade Barnett, PHONE# (571)-248-0276 -or- EMAIL = [email protected].

As mentioned in previous newsletters and at the picnic, your alumni association has been working on a ‘legacy’ project for its members, as wellas all the graduates of GWHS. The project involved making digital copies of all the GWHS yearbooks, from 1935-1973. Two sets of the CDs as well as twocopies on individual hard drives have now been produced. GWAA will keep one set of CDs and one hard drive for archival purposes, and one set will begiven GW Middle School for their reference materials.

The cost of this project has been approximately $10,000, which needless to say has made a substantial dent in our Treasury. However, we hopeto recoup part of this cost by selling individual CDs to GWHS members and graduates for a modest price ($10-$20 each). To keep this cost low for membersas well as to recoup a greater percentage of the cost, we are also offering to individuals and classes the opportunity to ‘dedicate’ yearbooks to theirclasses, themselves, classmates, relatives or teachers. A typical dedication might read ‘Dedicated to the memory of the class of 19—‘, or, ‘Dedicated to thememory of (individual, relative, teacher, etc.) Several classes have already made donations for their class. We will offer these dedications (one per classyear) for a $300 donation, which would cover the total cost of the project, if all class years are dedicated.

As of today, the following class years have been dedicated: 1939-1945.if your class has not already been dedicated, please first advise Burt Bostwick or Jane Foster of your wish to make a donation for that class year.

First come, first serve, of course! If your class year has already been dedicated, please feel free to choose another class year for your dedication. The‘dedication’ will take the form of a printed sleeve accompanying each CD for a given class year.”

FROM: Gene Thomas, Class of ‘55Dear David, I thought you might like to have the enclosed picturefor the G.W. archives. Since I don’t recall seeing this picture inany of the newsletters, I am assuming you don’t have it. Foryour convenience, I am enclosing an article by Sally Ward Stumpf, taken from the Fall 2004 G.W. Newsletter. Please excuse the badcolor. Anyway, if you consider re-running her article, the picturewould be a good supplement. By the way, I was at the gamebetween VPI and Quantico, but I don’t remember who won.

Bicentennial Time CapsuleBicentennial Time CapsuleBicentennial Time Capsuleby Sally WARD Stumpf, 1950 Class Representative

It was September 17, 1949, and theclass of 1950 was just beginning itsfinal football season. On that beautifulfall Saturday afternoon, the stadiumwas packed, and among others inattendance was the President of theUnited States, Harry S Truman. TheGWHS Presidents weren’t on the field, however. The Quantico Marines wereplaying VPI and the football gamewasn’t really the main attraction. Before the game began, city officialsgathered at the flagpole at the north

goal post to bury the city’s bicentennial time capsule. Alexandria was200 years old, and this event would conclude an almost year-longcelebration. The capsule, a stainless steel cylinder, approximately 4 feetlong and 8 inches in diameter, contained among other things, aerialviews of the city, and maps of Alexandria dating back to 1749,newspapers, rosters of local civic and other organizations, newspapersand phone books. Warner Brothers Pathe News recorded the event and itwas shown in 176,000 theaters.Over the ensuing years the class of 1950 went forth into the world andthe time capsule was forgotten. It wasn’t until about 1983 that anyoneeven realized that it was missing! About six years ago, a GW middleschool teacher, Therese Johnston, showed pictures of the capsule to herclass and they conducted a search for it. Digging near the flagpole, theyfound the decomposing marker of the capsule, which obviously had notwithstood the test of time. The Chamber of Commerce replaced the baseand the plaque and now the capsule rests patiently once again beneaththe tablet to wait another 50 years when our progeny will break the sealand discover what things were like when GW was a special place for theirgreat-grandparents.Stop by the football field some day and take a look at the plaque whichdescribes the contents of the capsule and asks the City Fathers to openthe cylinder on September 17, 2049. I would give anything to be there –I know it will be a beautiful fall day, the Quantico Marines will be playingfootball, and maybe the President of the United States will be there. My appreciation to Judy Lowe, Aide to Council Member Lonnie C. Rich, and the folks at theAlexandria Archeology Museum for helping me write this article

AAA SECRET PLASECRET PLASECRET PLAYYY ON OUR OLE GW FOOTBALLON OUR OLE GW FOOTBALLON OUR OLE GW FOOTBALL FIELDFIELDFIELD by Donald G. Knight, Class of 1948

(((ThisThisThis GameGameGame WWWas Never Seen)as Never Seen)as Never Seen) I WAS DISCHARGED from the U.S. Air Force in February of 1955 and was hired 2 months earlier by ACF Electronics located

in Alexandria. I was experienced in radar repair. ACF (American Car & Foundry /Government ResearchDivision) occupied the entire basement floor in the American-on-Wheels Roller Rink. The electrical &mechanical engineers, physicists and PhDs had all come from the Bureauof Standards. I was employed as an electronics technician-A at $7.00/hour. I’m certain some of you remember Alexandria’s AB&W Bus Company– those red, white and silver busses were manufactured by an ACF parentcompany; as well as bowling equipment/pin setters in the bowling laneson Montgomery Street. Our ACF Electronics Division had a highly “accurate” printed circuitdepartment. For this reason, a sister company, Avion, located in Paramus,

New Jersey wanted to use our services to produce a production model of their prototypeof a potential contract-getter. A Peruvian Electronics Engineer, who had worked with the Scandinavian Engineer, Norden, todevelop World War II bombsight for the “famous” B-17 Flying Fortress brought his design drawings, with the device to our labs. It was a hot summer morning that the device was ready for testing. The necessary test equipment was loaded in a vehicle,

along with the device and certain personnel. At the time, I didn’t know where we were going until werolled into the G.W.H.S. parking lot (it was all secret, remember…). Summer school was in sessionand a few cars were in the parking lot – all had been arranged with school officials. We loaded the test equipment, and device on 2 separate carts and pushed them through thefamiliar chain-link fence gate, where in my high school years had given football tickets to a tickettaker. One cart was pushed to the goal line at the far end of the football field and the second cart, withthe device at the other – 100 yards apart. Everything was positioned, connections made, power turned on and measurements made, and

recorded on graph charts. Several tests were run to check results. They were absolutely “amazing”. At 100 yards, this device could detect heat source –as small as a lighted cigarette, and track its movements “up/down” and “left/right”. Thisdevice, about the shape and size of a football cut in half, was to be the heat detection andguidance system for the renowned Sidewinder Missile. The test was a success, but overtime, our company lost its bid to produce it to Philco-Ford. During the testing not one person asked us what we were doing; some were running onthe track, others were throwing baseballs and tossing footballs.

Hello Dave: Just read your short stories page on line and enjoyed it very much. The only person on the list that I knew personally was Willard Scott. Igraduated in the class of 1952, which, I believe, was the smallest class ever, because the state of Virginia determined the schoolsystems should include 8th grade, so those students who would have moved into the’ 52 class in the fall from their local seventh gradeclassrooms, had to attend 8th grade. I had already graduated from eighth grade in St. Louis Missouri in May, and my family moved toAlexandria. Most of my class mates came into that class through similar circumstances, so we were small in number. Willard and Iwere in many of the same classes. His senior year, he took his long time girl friend (who lived near me) to the Senior Prom. My dateand I, both juniors, double dated with them and rode in the back seat while Willard drove all of us to the then “Washington NationalAirport,” where the Prom was held in a room that appeared to be a large bar or small restaurant. Having flowninto Reagan National many times since then, I can’t imagine the airport having room for a High School SeniorProm..... but that year it did and we all had a great time!

Recently, while cleaning some stored areas in my house, I ran across an 8.5" X 11" paperdrawing, with elaborate drawings, including one which is obviously GWHS, circa 1950’s.Anyhow, the paper is a Certificate of sorts, which says...“Charter Member of THE TUTOVA CLUB”.

FWND Schedule 2012-Jan 2013

I have had so much pleasure from reading the “memories” of GWHS Alumni in “ON GW”, I thought I might put some of memories down for othersto enjoy (I hope).I lived in Beverly Hills, which was quite a ways from GW, so I rode the old AB&W school buses. It was during WWII, so the buses

were old and not in good shape - and very crowded. I got on at Cameron Mills Road, rode to Braddock Road, then to Mt. VernonAve. and the school. Some of the names I remember from that bus ride were, Jerry Mallon, Roy Thomas, Jeannine Elliott, JohnReed, Paul Wedel - and others whose names escape me (Willie Norton and Jennings Mabry just came back to me).I played as a substitute on the ’44-45 State Champion Basketball Team and baseball teams my year. The following years (’45-’46)Ralph Partlow had graduated, creating a vacancy for me, so I moved up to first string in both sports.I played with Huck Thomas, Billy Rorer, Billy Harris, Jake Dohner, John Blanchard, Red Dienault and others. But I couldn’tequal Partlow’s abilities. One day, I went to W&L to play baseball, and it happened that I missed one of Mr. Lindsey’s tests due to my absence. So, Mr.Lindsey gave me a zero on the test. My Dad went to see the principal about that so I was allowed to take the test later.I was supposed to graduate in February ’46 but I flunked “Pop” Milligan’s Physics course and was forced to re-take the course, deferring my graduation until June’46. As a result I lost a scholarship to William & Mary for whom I had been chosen, and I endedup at VMI, from which I graduated in 1950, just in time to be called into the Army for the Korean War. A story about me appeared

in the Washington papers and Corky Fones clipped it and brought it to my Mother - a really nice thing for Corky to do. By the way, it all turned outwell, since I loved VMI, and still do, 65 years later.I dated a girl who went to St Mary’s Academy (not GW) Teresa Graumann, who lived in ML Ida. We were steadies until she left to go to college inNew York. After that, I dated a “new girl on the block”, Mary Ferguson, who moved to Groveton from Richmond.Ralph Partiow, John Berry, Sonny Hogan, Edgar Sims, Marvin Owens, Jack Moody - these were some of my good friends. Some have passed on.Others I’ve lost track of. I met a young lady named Norma when I got out of the Army in 1952. We married four months later and will celebrate our59th anniversary in November! Our first two years were spent in Boston, where I graduated from The Harvard Business School. We have one daughterand three grandchildren: one in DC (an SMU grad), one in Phoenix (a University of Arizona grad) and one a junior at SMU. I’ve lived in Boston,Baltimore, Fairfax, Lexington (VA), Dallas, St Pete (FL), and now Phoenix. Lexington was my favorite, Alexandria #2 and Dallas #3.

If anyone remembers me, please put me on your Christmas card list, I’d love to hear from you. In the GW Spirit, Tom (Tommy) Kelly

REMEMBERING - REMEMBERING - by Thomas D. Kellyby Thomas D. Kelly, Class of 1946, Class of 1946

INTROINTRO by Lois Yowell Bailey - Class of 1946

I received the following note from Thomas D. Kelly (Tommy) ’46 wanting to let his friends know where he has been all these years.I’m sure all our classmates remember Tommy but he didn’t mention much about his school years or what he has been doing.Tommy was Junior Class President and Senior Class Vice-President. Among some of the things in school, he was voted the SeniorClass Most Attractive and was a member of the Quill and Scroll Society and The Surveyor.I called Tommy to get some more information on what he has been doing all these years and found out that he graduated from VMI,went in the service during the Korean Conflict and was wounded. He received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his service. He met his wife Norma in Washington, DC after returning from the service. Tommy’s address is: 7601N. Central Ave., Unit 4,Phoenix, AZ 85020 and as he mentioned at the end of his note, he would love to hear from his friends. Now on to Tommy’s note...

When we finally came to those decisions, we also had to locate the best individual(s) to accomplish the task.We started by taking the yearbook that contained the most pages to find out if it would fit in one CD at a reasonably highresolution. After this it was determined that the largest COMPASS would fit, then we proceeded to put the other yearbooks intodigital format (CD).Your GWAA also kept a MASTER DIGITAL file of the complete set of yearbooks and from that we (GWAA) will produce AND makeavailable individual CDs of each yearbook at a very nominal cost to GWAA members. How to obtain a CD yearbook and the cost willbe announced at the Spring Social.
