Dear Alumnae and Alumni of Vassar, Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges,

Sail along glorious Mediterranean coastlines in autumn, when hillsides and sienna-shaded villagesreveal the timeless beauty of these lands. Our program includes masterworks of art and architecture as well asprivate visits to galleries, many with stunning collections.

We are pleased to be accompanied by architectural historian Patrick Bowe, author of Gardensof the Roman World. Also joining us on board will be Olivier Bernier, art historian and lecturer atThe Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Robert Pounder, Professor Emeritus of Classics at Vassar College. Thisjourney to Italy and France will be greatly enriched by these distinguished lecturers.

Begin in the “eternal” city of Rome, with its 2,500 years of masterpieces. At the splendidly restoredBorghese Gallery, Titians, Caravaggios and Berninis fill the halls. In the nearby port of Civitavecchia, embarkSea Cloud II for a delightful one-week voyage. Life aboard this three-masted barque, where sails are set by hand, has no comparison. Her friendly staff, luxurious accommodations and fine dining create an onboard ambianceof relaxed elegance.

Following a leisurely day at sea, step ashore at Livorno and drive past Tuscan olive groves andvineyards en route to Pisa, celebrated for its Romanesque Leaning Tower and Baptistry. Cruising the Italiancoastline, we sail to Genoa, where the collections in seaside palaces built by the great trading families betweenthe 14th and 17th centuries reflect a blend of wealth and culture. The city’s black-and-white striped cathedralis among the most spectacular in Italy. A private reception is arranged at the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.

Continue along the Riviera to Marseille, for a French dinner under the stars featuring thatsupreme glory of Provençale cuisine, bouillabaisse!Stroll through Parc Borély and see the remarkablecollection of paintings at the Musée Cantini. In fashionable St. Tropez, long a haunt ofImpressionist painters, visit the enchantingMusée de l’Annonciade, with works by Matisse,Bonnard and Signac. Our journey concludes inNice, where you may wish to extend your trip withan optional postlude. An optional Rome prelude isalso offered.

This program is co-sponsored with TheMetropolitan Museum of Art.

Sincerely,

Patricia Duane Lichtenberg, ’90 Carrie S. Brown, Ed.M., ’82 Jane ZacharyExecutive Director, AAVC Executive Director Executive DirectorVassar College Smith College Mount Holyoke College
