GDL Aluminum Roller Guides

Descriptions of the various GDL Series available:

Each GDL guide series offers two versions: a cassette anddouble sided rail (FDC__ version), as well as a pair ofrollershoes and pair of single sided rails (FEC__ version).See detail drawings for both versions on pages 12 and 13.

High Performance Series:(Sizes FDC12HP-... thru FDC45HP-..., and FEC12HP-... thru FEC45HP-...)

The High Performance series is the basis for GDL‘sdevelopment, which is used in the majority of applications.High Performance guides consist of 8 axial needle rollerbearings, running on precision polished and hardened alloyspring steel guideways. These guide bearings are greasepacked and shielded, while offering the highest load andmoment rating capacities within the GDL product line.

A guided axial needle roller bearing, is a new 2001enhancement to the 25, 35 and 45mm sizes in the HighPerformance series only. The guided roller still uses theoriginal axial needle roller bearing, but with a ground profiledouter bearing race that mates with the rail guideway profileand provides greater cassette stiffness. The new guided rollerdesign standard also enhances the cassettes rollingperformance.

Standard Performance Series:(Sizes FDC12SP-... thru FDC45SP-..., and FEC12SP-... thru FEC45SP-...)

The Standard Performance series is intended for minor loadsand moments for particularly economical guidance solutions.Standard Performance guides consist of 8 radial ball rollerbearings, running on precision polished and hardened alloyspring steel guideways. These guide bearings are greasepacked and sealed, while offering the lowest load andmoment ratings available within the GDL product line, with theexception of the Grease-Free and the Anti-Friction / CorrosionResistant series. Standard Performance series is the secondmost commonly used GDL guides for various applications andalso provides excellent running behavior.

High Dynamics Series:(FDC25HD-... thru FDC45HD-..., and FEC25HD-... thru FEC45HD-...)

The High Dynamics series is intended for medium loads andmoments in dynamic handling applications such as robotics.High Dynamic guides consist of 8 double row radial ball rollerbearings, running on precision polished and hardened alloysteel guideways. These guide bearings are grease packedand sealed and are an excellent choice for dynamic handlingmovements with acceleration forces and moments. The HighDynamics series falls slightly under the High Performanceseries for load and moment rating capacities, yet is well abovethe Standard Performance series. Minimum order required.

High Performance Corrosion Resistant Series:(FDC15HC-... thru FDC45HC-..., and FEC15HC-... thru FEC45HC-...)

The High Performance Corrosion Resistant series is thepreferred for most applications where corrosion protectionis necessary. HP Corrosion Resistant guides consist of 8stainless steel axial needle roller bearings, running onprecision polished and hardened stainless steel guideways. These guide bearings are grease packed and shielded, whileoffering the highest load and moment rating capacities ofGDL’s corrosion resistant type guides.

These corrosion resistant bearings can also be combined witha special aluminum coating for particularly harsh corrosives.Consult factory to best suit your application environment.

Standard Performance Corrosion ResistantSeries:(FDC15SC-... thru FDC45SC-..., and FEC15SC-... thru FEC45SC-...)

The Standard Performance Corrosion Resistant series isintended for very low loads and moments for particulary lightguidance solutions. Standard Performance guides consist of 8

Synthetic skinproductionThe reel machine forsynthetic skins wasdeveloped according tothe state of art. Fastand easy-runningaluminum roller guidesare used for the centralhorizontal movement. The large-dimensionedrunning rollers whichrest on needle bearingssustain loads from anydirection.

stainless steel radial ball roller bearings, running on precisionpolished and hardened stainless steel guideways. Theseguide bearings are grease packed and sealed, and offerlower load and moment ratings capacities than the alloy steel

Standard Performance series.

These corrosion resistant bearings can also be combinedwith a special aluminum coating for particularly harshcorrosives. Consult factory to best suit your applicationenvironment.

Anti-Magnetic Series:(FDC25AM-...)

The Anti-Magnetic seriesguide was developed forapplications in medicaltechniques, patient beds,MRI systems, Cat-Scan,X-Ray and research anddevelopment areas. Manymedical applicationsprohibit magnetic steelproperties, therebydriving the need forGDL’s Anti-Magneticseries. GDL’sAnti-Magnetic guide uses 8 axial needle rollerbearings made of anti-magnetic stainless steel, running on precisionpolished and hardenedanti-magnetic stainlesssteel guideways. Theseguide bearings are grease packed and shielded, whileoffering respectable load and moment rating capacities formany anti-magnetic applications.

Grease-Free Series:(FDC15GF-... thru FDC45GF-..., and FEC15GF-... thru FEC45GF-...)

The Grease-Free series guide is intended for particularlyclean applications where grease is prohibited to preventenvironmental contamination. Grease-Free series guidesconsist of 8 axial needle roller bearings, running on precisionpolished and hardened alloy spring steel guideways (orstainless steel guideways). These guide bearings are grease-free and shielded, and are available in alloy bearing steel orstainless steel grades. Stainless steel fasteners and dragadjustment set screw can also be provided with stainless steelbearing orders. These bearings offer minimal load andmoment rating capacities and should be applied after properqualification. See load and moment rating data on pages 14and 15.

The corrosion resistant bearings can also be combined with aspecial aluminum coating for particularly harsh corrosives.Consult factory to best suit your application environment.

Vibe-Damp Series:(FDC25VA-... thru FD45VA-..., and FEC25VA-... thru FEC45VA-...)

The Vibe-Damp aspect of this series is intended forenvironments where the guide rail is exposed to vibrationsthat can be decreased appreciably, as they are transferredthrough the rail and into the cassette. This is accomplishedby 8 special axial needle roller bearings that encase 3 elastico-rings per bearing, which provides a vibration dampeningeffect across the rail and into the cassette. One particularapplication is in the camera filming industry, where filmingframes are steadied as the cassette travels along the rail.Minimum order required.

Anti-Friction / Corrosion Resistant Series:(FDC12RG-... thru FDC45RG-..., and FEC12RG-... thru FEC45RG-...)

The Anti-Friction aspect of this series is intended for light loadapplications, where minimal breakaway forces are required inorder to move an apparatus. One such application is on astrand winding and tensioning pulley, where a pulley mountedto the GDL cassette must quickly change directionsrepeatedly as a continuous strand winds onto a spool. GDL’sunique adjustment capability, low mass aluminum cassetteand specialized glass radial ball bearings provide the rightcombination for very sensitive low breakaway forceadjustments, with very little friction. Minimum order required.

Clean roomhandlingHandling systems forclean room conditions. The compact rollerguide has very goodrunning behavior. Thishandling system ismainly sold tocustomers from thefood-producing industry, the medical techniqueand the pharmaceuticalindustry.

Antimagnetic and non-antimagneticaluminum roller guides can be used inmany medical equipment applications. The antimagnetic roller guides workwithout influence on the measuringresults.

GUIDELINE rails can be preciselyfastened together using a factory offeredkeyed butt-joint option for continuousrail lengths, as shown in Figures 1 & 2.

Two rail sections are clamped togetherwith mating round bar stock pieces thatseat tangent to both rail sectionguideways on each side of the rail. Whilethe rail sections are clamped together, akeyway slot is machined in the top andbottom sides of the rail, across the butt-joint. Screw holes are then drilledthrough the rail inside the keyway slot, sothe opposing keyways can be drawntogether tightly with screws. The roundbar stock clamp is then removed, providing a rigid and well aligned keyedbutt-joint.

The keyed butt-joint option providesoptimum alignment of all guidewaysfrom one rail section to the next. Thisallows for optimum "smooth" guidanceof the cassette bearings, while crossingrail butt-joints.

The keyed butt-jointed rail option iscurrently available in the FDR version 25,35, & 45 mm rail sizes. For a keyed butt-joint on rail sizes 25, 35 or 45 mm,specify P/N:# GDL-BJK

Consult factory for other size possibilities.

The new GDL catalog has many changes due to an expandedproduct line. The change to feature descriptive part numberingwas done to accommodate all current and future offerings of theGDL product. The goal is to have standard features and optionsavailable, for a perfect fit into your application.

Included in the chart below are hex sizes, drag resistance andtorque ratings for adjusting the cassette.

GDL Aluminum Roller GuidesTechnical information

1. Features of the guide system

Aluminum roller guides consist of a double sided rail and a rollercassette or two single sided rails and two roller shoes. Aluminumroller guide rails and cassettes are made of aluminum alloy. Therollers are very smooth running on precision polished guidewaysmade of high alloy spring steel. The special cross patternorientation of the running rollers provides high load and momentcapacity in all directions.

Their special features are: light weight, small dimensions, andhigh speed of displacement. Aluminum roller guides areeconomical and universal handling components, which aremostly or all corrosion-resistant and available at a favorable price.

2. Size of the guide system

To select the right guide size, first the moments and forces actingon the bearing have to be determined.

Recommended safety factors (with ISO screws quality 8.8):Thrust load S > 1.3Tensile load S > 4.0Moment load S > 6.0

Generally the first decision has to be whether the guide systemshould be built with double sided rail and cassette, or with twosingle sided rails and a pair of roller shoes.

3. Material

The basic body of GDL aluminum roller guides is made ofaluminum alloy. The giudeways consist of hardened, high alloyspring steel or of stainless steel. By using basic bodies ofaluminum, the moved masses are reduced which allows light-weight construction requiring lower moving forces and reducedenergy consumption. Still the integrated GDL system sustainshigh load and moment ratings.

4. Operating temperature

GDL linear guides can be operated within a temperature rangefrom -10° C up to + 80° C. For other temperatures, please consultfactory.

7.1 GDL adjustment procedure

Do not measure sliding resistance with wipers on.

1) Lay the rail out on the flat surface with the datum line facingaway from you. Anchor the rail to keep it from shifting whensliding resistance is applied to the cassette.

The datum line is a reference groove on one side of the rail.

2) Set the roller cassette on the rail with the adjustment screwfacing towards you, while the datum line on the rail is away fromyou. Do not install the wipers on the cassette yet.

Do not install the wipers yet.

3) Make sure the four bolts on the adjustable side of the cassetteare slightly loose and the bolts on the fixed side are tight beforeadjuting the drag screw.

One side of the cassette is fixed and the other side is floating.

4) The drag hex screw is located on one side of the cassette.Adjust the screw in for more drag and out for less. Do not try toadjust cassette with top plates bolts tight.

See the chart for drag adjustment hex screw size.

5) Adjust the drag on the cassette by sliding as it slides downthe rail. Feel for an even amount of resistance as you turn thehex screw in and out.

6) Tighten down the top plate bolts to the proper torquespecification. The tightening of the top plate bolts will add someresistance. If necessary, the adjustment procedure can berepeated for better sliding resistance for your application.

See the chart for top plate hex size and torque rating.

7) If the adjustment is done without a scale, it should moveevenly. Some examples of improper adjustment are: If thecassette “hops”, it is too tight. If it is too loose, the top plate ofthe cassette will have play. Try to be in the middle.

8) To check your settings use a pull or push style scale. Slidethe cassette down the entire rail at an even speed, measuringthe drag resistance. Your hightest drag rating should bereferenced when looking at the chart.

See the chart for drag resistance ratings for the size and type ofcassette.

9) Install the clip on wipers. The wipers will add between 1-3ounces of resistance. The wipers do not add any additional rollerpreload to the rail.

The clip on wipers can be installed at this time.

7.2 Double sided rail and cassette

Aluminum roller guides are adjusted in such a way that therequired stiffness under load is obtained. If self adjustment ispreferred, we recommend that you measure the slide resistanceas shown below. Before doing so, the mating structure should bechecked for dimensional accuracy and flatness.

The cassettes which are mounted on the rails are adjustedclearance-free, without play. This adjusting method is required atthe point on the rail where the cassette travels with the least slideresistance. Adjustment is completed in the non-loaded condition. The tolerances below refer to this condition.

Tolerances in the guide system may cause slight variations inthe slide resistance, when the adjusted cassette is moved alongthe guide rail.

7.3 Double sided rail and roller cassette

To change the clearance setting, first the slave adjustable shoescrews on the cassette top plate are slightly loosened. After-wards, the drag adjustment set screw is turned to increase ordecrease slide resistance of the cassette. Turning the dragadjustment set screw effects a displacement of the roller shoe inrelation to the cassette top plate.

After re-tightening of the cassette top plate, the slide resistancecan be checked. This procedure can be repeated until the desiredslide resistance is achieved.

7.4 Rails and rollershoes

When installing, it is important to distinguish between the masterfixed side and the slave adjustable side rollershoe and rail. Therail on the master fixed side is aligned to the mating structure andfastened securely by all screws.

The rail on the slave adjustable side should be lighly tightenedand movable with light force during initial alignment of parallelrails. Guage blocks should be used between the parallel rails, bylocating off the aligned and mounted master rail, in order to alignthe slave rail parallel to the master rail. Slave rail mounting boltsshould be tightened as the slave rail is aligned at each boltposition. See paragraph 11.3 for further instructions on mountingparallel single sided rails.

7.5 Centering groove on the master fixed shoe and custom top plate

Each pair of rollershoes are provided with centering grooves foroptimum alignment to their mating top plate during mounting. One rollershoe should be designated as the master fixedrollershoe, even though both are designed with a centeringgroove on their top surface. The other shoe will serve as theslave adjustable side rolelrshoe. The mating customized top plateshould be machined with a centering shoulder according to thefollowing data.

7.6 Adjusting cassette built with rollershoes and custom top plate

The centering shoulder on the top plate should be assembledwith its respective fixed rollershoe centering groove and securelytorqued to recommended specification. See cassette screwtorque specifications under step 5, on page 20.

Assemble the adjustable rollershoe to the top plate also, parallelto the fixed rollershoe on the same side of the top plate. Itsfasteners should be lightly tightened so that the adjustablerollershoe can be moved with light finger presssure.

As assembled cassette can then be slid onto parallel rails, whilekeeping the fixed rollershoe on the master fixed rail side. Theincorporated drag adjustment set screw can then be turnedclockwise to remove cassette play, or counter clockwise to reduceslide resistance while maintaining zero play.

Once the desired slide resistance is achieved with no cassetteplay, the adjustable rollershoe fasteners can also be torqued tospecification.

8. Running accuracy

The running accuracy is measured from the top plate surface ofthe cassette, to the ideal straight line of travel. Running accuracyof the cassette to the rail is +/- .03mm (.0012") per meter, grantedno greater than (.0024") straightness deviation per meter ismaintained when mounting the rail.

9. Contact and support surfaces

The contact and support surfaces have a substantial influenceon functioning and precision of linear guides. Depending on thefunctional requirements of the system, the mating structure hasto be machined with the corresponding degree of precision.Machining errors on the mating structure will otherwise add tothe running error of the guide system. In order to assure troublefreefunctioning, we recommend that a max. straightness deviation of≤ 0.1 mm (.0039") per running meter be maintained whenmounting the rail.

10. Design hints

10.1 Parallel double sided rails and cassettes

.

The master fixed rail should always be established straight andtrue first, within the maximum straightness deviation specified inparagraph 9. With parallel rail arrangements, both rails should bemounted on the same mounting surface elevation and treatedwith equal surface preparation and tolerancing practices. Precisealignment in terms of spacing, parallelism and height is veryimportant.

When coupled parallel to a driving actuator system, the adjustableside of the cassette should be placed on the side closest to thedriving actuator. This will minimize driving actuator torquetransferred to the adjustable side of the cassette.

10.2 Parallel single sided rails and roller shoes

Aluminum roller guides consisting of single sided rails and rollershoes can be varied in rail spacing. They are well suited forassembly on structural aluminum extrusions, due to theirhomogeneous corrosion resistance and temperature behavior.

11. Guide mounting instructions

The useable load capacity is influenced by the connectionbetween the guide elements and the mating structure. For thisreason, a flat, straight and solid secure mounting surface shouldbe provided. Adequate support of qualified loads and momentscan then be achieved, along with desired running accuracy.

11.1 Mounting double sided rails and cassette

Depending on the load situation, certain double sided rails shouldeither be screwed or screwed and dowelled, and respectivelyput into grooves or against a shoulder.

The rails can be secured best against shoulders and are screwedor screwed and dowelled to the mating structure. After finaladjustment of rail straightness and parallelism, the rail mountingscrews are tightened starting in the middle of the rail length. Railmounting bolts should be torqued to specification by alternatingbetween each bolt. The installer should start with the bolt in thecenter of the rail length and proceed by alternating between eachbolt left of center and each bolt right of center, while workingtowards both ends of the rail.

Afterwards, the cassette should be moved back and forth alongthe total stroke distance of the rail. If the cassette travelssmoothly, the mounting process can proceed or be completed.

11.2 Mounting parallel double sided rails and cassettes

With parallel double sided rail arrangements, we recommendthat the master fixed rail side and slave adjustment rail sides ofthe guide system be identified. This allows optimum tolerancesin parallelism to be achieved best by adjusting the slaveadjustable rail, parallel to the master rail. The master fixed railside should be mounted first to achieve the initial line of straighttravel.

The example below displays a convenient method for adjustingthe slave adjustable rail parallel to the fixed master rail. Oncethe cassette travel is smooth, without play, one can proceedwith rail mounting.

Note that the top plate spanning across the cassettes on oppositerails is completely bolted down to the cassette on the masterfixed side only. The top plate end over the slave adjustable sideis only bolted in one location, in the center of the slave adjustmentside cassette. With one bolt holding the top plate to the slaveadjustment side cassette, this cassette can pivot while the slaveadjustable rail self-aligns parallel to the fixed master rail side. The floating top plate setup is stroked along the entire rail length,to establish the parallelism between the two rails.

Calibrated guage blocks can also be used to establish equalintegrity in rail parallelism. The installer should seat andtemporarily clamp short pieces of precision ground round stock, tangent to the two guideways on the inside of each rail.

The calibrated guage blocks can then be used, to locate off theprecision round stock on the master fixed rail, in order to set theslave adjustable rail parallel. The guage blocks are then locatingthe same way that the floating top plate is, by referencing boththe master and slave rail guideway surfaces to establishparallelism.

Once the slave adjustable rail has been self-aligned, its boltsshould also be torqued to specification in the order mentioned inparagraph 11.1. The top spanning across both cassettes onopposite rails, can then be securely fastened using all cassettemounting bolt holes.

11.3 Mounting parallel single sided rails and rollershoes

Aluminum roller guides consisting of single sided rails androllershoes can be varied in rail spacing. They are well suitedfor assembly on profiled aluminum extrusions because of theirhomogeneous corrosion resistance and temperature behavior.

Ideally, both single sided rails should be installed against parallelmachined shoulders, but this will not always be practiced. Withparallel single sided rail arrangements, precise alignment interms of parallelism and height is necessary. For parallel singlesided rails, we also recommend that the master fixed side andslave adjustment sides of the guide system be identified. Thisallows for the best control of parallelism to be achieved bylocating off of the master fixed rail, to establish the proper locationfor the slave adjustable side rail. The master rail must be mountedfirst to achieve the initial line of straight travel.

If parallel singled sided rails are set-up with the guideways facingeach other, then the method using guage blocks, described underparagraph 11.2, should be used. In the majority of applicationsthough, the guideways of parallel single sided rails are facingaway from one another.

When parallel singled sided rails are set-up with the guidewaysfacing away from one another, a vernier caliper should be used tomeasure and set the rail span parallelism. The installer should seatand temporarily clamp short pieces of precision ground round stock, tangent to the two guideways on the outside of each rail. A calibratedvernier caliper should be used, to measure and locate off theprecision round stock on the master fixed rail, in order to set theslave adjustable rail parallel. The vernier caliper is then locating thesame way that the floating top plate is, by referencing both themaster and slave rail guideway surfaces to establish parallelism.

The rail on the slave adjustable side, should be lightly tightenedand movable with light force during initial alignment of parallelrails. Guage blocks should be used between the parallel rails,by locating off the aligned and mounted master rail, in order toalign the slave rail parallel to the master rail. Slave rail mountingbolts should be tightened as the slave rail is aligned at each boltposition.

Each pair of rollershoes are provided with centering grooves foroptimum alignment to their mating top plate during mounting. One rollershoe should be designated as the master fixedrollershoe, even though both are designed with a centeringgroove on their top surface. The other shoe will serve as theslave adjustable side rollershoe. A mating customized top plateshould be machined with a centering shoulder according to thedata provided in paragraph 7.5.

The rollershoes can then be assembled to the customized topplate, to make a complete cassette. Putting the cassette ontothe rails requires keeping the master fixed rollershoe on themaster fixed rail side. Adjustment of the slave adjustablerollershoe can then be made in order to achieve the desiredcassette slide resistance. Once proper slide resistance isachieved, the slave adjustment side fasteners can be torquedto specification per paragraph 5.

12. Keyed butt-jointing of rail sections

12.1 Rail hole spacing

Butt-jointed rails over L = 4000 mm are sectioned togetheraccording to the GDL standard. See “GDL’s Keyed Butt-JointedRail Option” on page 18. Butt-jointed rails sections are cut sothat the standard rail mounting hole spacing is maintained acrossall butt-joints.

Keyed butt-jointed rails are usually shipped completelyassembled, but sometimes must be shipped partially assembled, due to shipping length limitations and shipping care. Partiallyassembled butt-jointed rails are supplied with a butt-jointingclamping fixture and the keyways and screws for fastening railsection together.

12.2 Mounting of butt-jointed rails

Clean mounting surfaces, then place rail sections loose on theguide path, one behind the other. Lay the rails in their correctsequence of the system design (i.e.: 1, 2, 3, 4…etc.). Theorientation of the depth groove on the lower surface of the railshould always be on the same side for all rail sections beingbutt-jointed.

25

Any non-assembled rail sections should be aligned with thefactory supplied butt-joint clamping fixture as displayed below.

See explanation of “GDL’s Keyed Butt-Jointed Rail Option” onpage 18.

Once all rail sections are assembled, the complete guide pathcan be aligned and fastened. Alignment and fastening shouldbe conducted according to the applicable guide arrangementand steps previously described in this technical informationsection.
