Abstract-The present column lists currently available ~~iniurn and ~umi~urn ahoy reference materials. Pure ~umi~um and its alloys (aIumj~u~~r, alu~nium-m~gane~, ~um~u~magnesium, aluminium-ma~esiu~ilicon, ~u~niu~~n~rna~esium) have been considered. Included are three tables that provide an easy-to-use survey. The following information is covered: the uame of the material, the sample code, the producer, the reference to recent certification, the names and addresses of the suppliers from which the reference material may be obtained, and specific remarks.

REFERENCE materials for ferrous metallurgy have been listed in our latest two columns [1, 21; the present instalment concerns alumi~ium and aluminium alloys.

Thanks to its highly diverse properties (e.g. lightness, ruggedness, extNdabi~ty, low temperature properties, reflectivity, thermal and electrical conductivity, amagnetism, atmospheric corrosion resistance, non-toxicity) aluminium is employed in many branches of industry, both traditional and new (chemical, petrochemical, general engineering, aerospace, marine, cryogenics, hydraulics, building, transport, decoration, food industries, etc.). Obviously, the material performances can vary depending on its composition. Alloying elements (Mg, Mn, Fe, Si, Cr, Zr, etc.) increase its hardness. While the incorporation of copper improves the mechanical properties, these alloys are not weldable by ~nventional techniques and are less resistant to atmosphe~c corrosion. On the other hand, Al-Zn-Mg alloys are weldable and those containing more than 3.5% magnesium are widely used for structural applications, The concentrations of certain metallic elements (Zn, Cu, etc.) must be controlled for applications involving contact with foodstuffs. Great care has therefore to be exercised when choosing the material for the envisaged applications.

As previously mentioned, the role of reference materials is well recognized in analytical chemistry. The large number of aluminium reference materials reported here bear eloquent witness to their growing im~rtance for the spectrochemist. These well characterized samples are extremely useful for calibration and analytical control (accuracy, compatibility).

For the preparation of this issue, inquiries were addressed to various certifying institutions, producers, commercial firms, official distributors. Only agencies who replied to our request for information at the time of writing are mentioned here.

Natural materials such as bauxites have already been considered previously [3] and are therefore not covered in the present column.

The majority of the aluminium reference samples have been prepared as chips or discs. In some cases, the material is in the form of mushroom.

The presentation of the present survey follows the general style we have adopted in our previous instalments of the column.

Three tables have been prepared to provide, in a convenient way, a maximum of necessary information to the user of reference samples, and to make it easier for him to find what he is looking for.

In Table 1 aluminium materials have been classified under nine principal headings.

The table is organised as follows.

(1) The name of the material is given in the first column. (2) The sample code, i.e. the usual abbreviations given by the originator, is shown

in column two. (3) The acronym of the producer is stated in the third column. (4) Recent references to certification, reports, catalogues or preliminary information

are identified by a number preceded by the letter R. The number in the relevant column refers to the list presented in Table 2.

(5) The supplier from which the sample may be obtained is identified in a similar manner (using S as the first letter). The names and addresses of the suppliers of the reference materials mentioned in Table 1 are given in Table 3. In this manner, readers are able to obtain further information directly from such sources (catalogue, price list, quantity of the supply, details of the purchased procedure, etc.).

(6) Specific remarks that may assist the reader in his choice of samples are indicated in the last column.

In preparing the paper, unfortunate oversights might have occurred and many materials possibly used as standards may have been omitted for whatever reasons. In such cases we apologise to the readers. We will also ask them insistently to inform us of their remarks and suggestions so that we can take these into account in the future, and improve the usefulness of this column. Producers and suppliers of reference materials are invited to send pertinent information about their products and services at the address given above.

Acknowledgements-1 am grateful to Professor P. W. J. M. BOUMANS for the enthusiasm he has invested in the present reference material column and to V. MIOCQUE and S. VANERUM for their kind assistance. I also wish to express my sincere thanks to various agencies for their co-operation in providing ample information and numerous documents for this column.
