Open Evening

On a warm sunny evening last week, the school opened it’s doors to

prospective students and their parents at our annual Open Evening.

A significant number of families were welcomed into the school and

were given a tour of our facilities by our students.

Departmental areas had been busily preparing throughout the day to

ensure that they showcased the impressive facilities our school has,

but also the high quality work that students produce.

Science remained a popular stop on the tour with the opportunity to

dissect lungs or look at the ignition of methane!

Across the English and the arts faculty, guests were asked to solve a

series of crimes inspired by the GCSE text “An Inspector Calls.”

Guests cross-examined a range of suspects in the drama studio,

looked for clues in English and had the chance to star in their own

‘Wanted’ poster in Media Studies.

PE resurrected the popular Tour de Altwood and guests were

challenged to see how far they could cycle in 1 minute!

The evening provided the opportunity for guests to hear

more about our school community with speeches from

two of our new Year 7 students Ellie Dowdican and Colin

Schwiderski, our Head Student Megan De Alwis and the

Headteacher.

At the end of the evening, guests could not speak highly

enough about the quality of our tour guides and how

much they had enjoyed the evening, particularly

commenting on the passion of our staff and feeling of

community.

We look forward to welcoming families on a series of

Open Mornings where there is an opportunity to see the

school in operation on a normal day.

These will run on Tuesday October 2nd, Thursday October

4th and Tuesday October 16th, 9.30 for a 9.45 start

through to 11:10 finish.

Information Evenings

As the new academic year gets underway, we have been pleased to welcome parents into school for the “Now

You’re In” evenings in both Year 7 and 10. These evenings are key as students begin their Altwood journey with us

in Year 7, and progress into the next phase, preparing for their GCSE examinations in Year 10.

On both events, parents were met by their son/daughter’s academic tutor to discuss progress and character

development, before attending a presentation which highlighted important information to allow effective

home-school partnerships in the year ahead.

Parents have been overwhelming in their support for the evening commenting on the positivity of all staff they met.

Thank you to all who attended and for those unable to have been with us, the slides will be made available via the

school website within the next week.

We look forward to welcoming parents/carers of Year 8 & 9 students on Monday 24th September for a “Meet the

Tutor” event at their allocated meeting time.

School Photos

On Tuesday this week, the school photographer was in for year groups 7,9,11,12

and 13. As you can see they were prepped with three photo ‘booths’ to process the

students quickly. The students were given a printed form with their photos on and

the instructions for parent/carers to order on line.

Luckily the weather was kind for the outdoor year group photo!

‘One of your students, Katie Harris, helped at Timbertown this year. In
