Altium Modeler for SolidWorks Datasheet

Intro
Robotics, wearable electronics, automotive, military and industrial control are just a few examples of complex
electronic products that can come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending upon the intended application
and use. Today’s designers are not only haunted by electrical constraints, but they also have to take into
consideration mechanical rules if they intend to follow “First time design right” methodologies. If you use both
Altium Designer and SOLIDWORKS, the Altium Modeler for SOLIDWORKS will help in avoiding costly design
errors by improving the ECAD/MCAD integration process.
Overview
With Altium Designer and Solidworks installed on the same PC the Modeler allows you to build the
SOLIDWORKS assembly in real time. Since the product directly communicates with SOLIDWORKS and Altium
Designer, no intermediate files are involved giving you the ability to dynamically pass changes back and forth
between ECAD/MCAD.
Auto generate the Solidworks assembly from Altium Designer and make change bi-directionally

Moving files between different design systems is always a challenge. Why bother with import and export when
both systems are running on the same machine? This extension for Altium Designer and its complementary add
on for SolidWorks allows PCB designs to be edited in both systems without the need for an intermediate file.
Once an Assembly has been created, you can perform bi-directional updates in real time. The product has an
easy to use tree view based user interface embedded in a standard Altium workspace panel.
When the assembly is created, if you have SOLIDWORKS parts for your footprints, these are used in the
assembly, thus allowing you to create realistic models in SOLIDWORKS. In addition there is the option to include
copper features and silk screens.
Key Benefits
• Detect and avoid mechanical interference errors
• Save time getting your PCB’s into SOLIDWORKS
• Make better design decisions due accurate information being available
to all stakeholders in the design process
• Optimise your use of both SOLIDWORKS and Altium by doing
appropriate tasks in the appropriate tool
Features
• Creates a native SOLIDWORKS assembly using native SOLIDWORKS parts
• Automatically creates SOLIDWORKS parts from bodies or other
geometry in the footprint if SOLIDWORKS parts are not available
• Options to model copper features and silk screens
• Option to support multi-layer PCBs
• Bi-directional operation - make changes in SOLIDWORKS and
“Synchronize” them with Altium and vice versa
• Bi-directional support includes Keep-outs and Height Rules.
• Bi-directional changes are instantaneous
• View layer pairs of multi-layer PCB’s in isolation using SOLIDWORKS
configurations
• Supports Altium Rigid/Flex PCBs
Application
• PCBs mounted in confined spaces
• Electronics in plastic cases
• PCBs with complex mechanical constraints
• PCBs that will use SOLIDWORKS simulation tools
New user interface streamlining setup and updates
